Hi All.

I had responded, but failed to reply-all that is usually automatic
with mailing lists. In any event it did not happen. Here is my response,
sent to Dries Feys only but intended for all of you kind folks.

I installed the MS Excel Viewer, and now the file opens flawlessly. I
have NO idea why.

HI Dries, and Stuart, and others:

I just tried it again, and it opens flawlessly with the latest stable
LO Version 3.6.5.2 (Build ID: 5b93205) on my Windows 7, 64 bit system.
I wonder what the heck was wrong. The only thing I did in the interim
was to fetch the MS Excel Viewer. I wonder if something came with that
that enabled LO, a font or something that enabled LO.
Many thanks for prompt response.

Hi :)
It might be worth writing to the board-discuss list to let them know you are
not happy with the way replies to the list work.  You are not alone in that!

It all depends on how your mail client (standalone or online) works.
When a reply automatically posts to the list, Thunderbird has the
standard Reply and Reply All options. If the reply goes to the
individual, they change to Reply and Reply List. This strikes me as
being the most sensible approach.

Re: [libreoffice-users] new version of LO gives gibberish for excel file.

2013-03-03 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
So it's beginning to sound like there might be a problem with the install of
LibreOffice rather than with the file.

David, can you re-download a fresh new version of LibreOffice?  Either the
stable branch, 3.6.5,
http://www.libreoffice.org/download/?type=win-x86lang=en-USversion=3.6.5
or the branch with newer features and greater compatibility, the 4.0.0
http://www.libreoffice.org/download/
or the 4.0.1 when that comes out in a few days.
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/ReleasePlan

While waiting for the download, or before starting on that, perhaps just try
renaming your User Profile
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Documentation/UserProfile

Renaming the user profile resets all settings and configurations back to
factory defaults so that usually fixes any weird problems and it's quite quick
to try.

Regards from
Tom :)

This file looks rather fine in LO 3.6.5.2 on Debian testing, amd64. Maybe there
are some issues I didn't caught at glance, but it definitely isn't gibberish.

Could it be that this is related to your operating system (unlikely), LO copy

Hi :)
All looked fine in Ubuntu 12.04.  I might be able to have a look in Xp later.

I took a screen-shot of the website to show that looking fine and then the xls
download (they called it their Excel version, not sure if that infringes their
Eula but there we go) and also their Pdf version.  Opening their Pdf in a Pdf
reader was fine but opening it in LibreOffice always gives me tooo many options
and i never know which to choose.

So, the Pdf looked a bit wrong if i opened it in LibreOffice but only because i
have no idea what options to choose.  Perhaps simialr trouble there so please
try the Excel version instead ;)

 of GDP.
The newest, recommended version of LO opens the file as gibberish:
LibreOffice Version 3.6.5.2 (Build ID: 5b93205)

My system runs Windows 7, 64 bit, AMD quad core, 4 GB RAM.

Can anyone explain or help me fix this?

This file looks rather fine in LO 3.6.5.2 on Debian testing, amd64. Maybe
there
are some issues I didn't caught at glance, but it definitely isn't gibberish.

Could it be that this is related to your operating system (unlikely), LO copy
or user profile? Can you try opening this file as new system user?

Re: [libreoffice-users] new version of LO gives gibberish for excel file.

   Have you cleared the cache recently?;
CCleaner is a handy program to use whenever you shut down your
machine -
clears the cache of all that built-up junk, which
accumulates;
so you won't run into these problems where the machine wants to find
a MsFt program which you no longer have on it ;-)

You can find CCleaner here http://www.techsupportalert.com/ with
comments on how it operates, etc.

A workaround is to fetch MS' Excel Viewer, then copy from that to a table
in Writer for my document, but I would prefer to use LO for as nearly
 everything as possible.
