Finally got it to work. In LO3.4.1 I had to redefine just one field and
then the rest were recognised.

I have set up a form letter to merge data from a sheet into a form.
This works well and I now want to send the files for another person to use.
On the receiving end I found I had to add the data source again
(understandable) but also found I had to re-identify every field in the
document

Open Writer
Click on ,menu Edit, Exchange Database
In window on right, click on Browse button. Find new database .odb and
select it.
Select the new database on right side, hit '+' to expand and pick source.
Click on Define button.
