In my experience, having blanks in a UNIX path is such a PITA that I do everything to avoid it. Everytime you need to hand it over you have to worry how many escapes (\) you have to do so that it arrives correctly at the end of the information chain. It is MUCH less hassle to simply use underlines.
Therefore it is my advice to repair the "broken" directory name to my_dir and live happily ever after.
