The problem is nokia specific, I was using the proper AT+CNMI setting so that the messages are not stored in the SIM, but still I was getting the "No space for new messages" message. Checking the inbox showed no messages. The only solution was a phone reset. The sim buffering did not helped.

Did you set sim-buffering = true?
An alternative method is to set up your init string with the proper
AT+CNMI settings. So your messages will be delivered to the TE and not
stored in your SIM.
Check the documentation for information about that.
