I think it is not a kannel issue but your drivers.
 
I had a very similar problem with an USB Enfora GSM modem where the dmesg
and /var/log/messages shows that the device was mounted when in reality it
wasn´t .. or at least not completely.
 
Have you tried to access it with minicom or wdial??

hi all,

im using kannel as an sms gateway,with my sony ericcson k700i.all these days
i worked connecting my phone to my laptop through a USB datacable.so my
device variable was /dev/ttyUSB0.but now i want to connect my phone through
bluetooth!but when i plug the bluetooth dongle to my ubuntu machine and
start bluetooth and type dmesg | tail on my terminal i don't get 
any port as rfcomm0.

this is the message i get on the terminal

when i try to start kannel with the device=/dev/rfcomm0  it says device not
found.but whn i scan using hcitool scan
i get this message.that the phone is detected/

can some one help me setup kannel with bluetooth
