I have found some more strange things. If I switch to a regular
terminal window (Ctrl-Alt-F2) and press the power button it does a
regular shutdown, but if either at the login screen or logged into
gnome it seems to cause a suspend shutdown that doesn't work.

The only way you can get a prompt containig root is by using su - .
su will only produce a root prompt by starting as root. It it not
posible to do this:
[bobg@box6 ~]$ su
Password:
[root@box6 bobg]#

You can use a ssh ftp client in your android, to connect to Fedora. If
you have no wifi, but a laptop, you can create a wifi ad-hoc
connection in your Fedora, and connect android to it.

I think Fedora is a good distro to start. As Joe Wulf said, is a good
idea to install it in VirtualBox first, so you can play with linux
