Thanks for noticing the problem and the patch. We looking for a
solution where the dn can be also added somehow as we are thinking on
adding a multi ldap server functionality and having the dn will become
handy. I'm keeping the ticket to track the fix.

We do not use qcow images and as I wrote, we're still on 3.2.1 so i
cannot say if 3.4 makes a difference.
However as you can see, except for the added cd command, the script in
3.4 still does the exact same thing as its 3.2.1 counterpart so I'm
doubting this has changed at all?

Wasn't this addressed in the ON 3.4? You should look into the qcow2 driver
in 3.4. If you think its fast now wait till you try the qcow2 backing store
driver.. :)

The re-creation of VM directories should be fixed in 3.4. So the original
proposal (hook with rm VM directory) should now work. Have you tried that
in 3.4?

Those files are supposed to be protected by the standard FS mechanisms. You
can also encrypt/decrypt the file to use any OpenNebula command (they need
the file contents decrypted).
If you have security concerns you may want to look at the SSH Keys auth[1]
or x509 auth[2]
