Yes, it's safe.
There has been some issues with SF but the AOO download is safe. You can check
the MD5 sum if you want to make sure.

It seems that downloading OO is from this address
(http://www.openoffice.org/download/) which operates through SourceForge, a
known site for malware. Is it safe to download?
My former version of OO, now uninstalled, developed a corruption which your
recovery operation could not fix.
