I have been trying to overcome the constant crashing of the program, and I
think I have made some progress, however, when I try and open up saved
documents (word) it is coming up with an error message: “The requested
operation requires elevation”.

Yeah, it’s a pain in the ass.
Go to Preferences, security and privacy and hit the general button.
Go there before you hit on another program to open and the last item you
clicked on will be displayed in the middle of the page with an option to open
or not to open.
