Thank you for your reply, I appreciate your help, sorry I am a computer dummy. 
I copied my OO docs to a thumb drive and transferred them to another laptop 
that already 
transferred them to another laptop that already had OO installed; they work 
correctly.
I uninstalled my old OO from my laptop, and downloaded and installed new up to 
date version of OO. The original problem rem
remains, the docs graying out when attempting to use them.

Try reinstalling OO in case you have deleted an essential component.
