I've done a little digging and this is what I found to suggest you try...
If you're using Windows be sure to check in
Usually configuring openoffice the right way will help you prevent this. If
you enable auto-save it will force you to save it as you go along. Also a
backup directory should be configured to have an alternative copy that you
can go if things happen to your Document folder.
