Windows is freezing my work. Open Office 4.1.13

When I have documents made up through open office, micro soft then freezes my files and ask me to sign up with them for a fee.. How can I get Windows from kidnapping and extorting my files. I don't want to pay Microsoft when I can use Apache which works great Can they legally covert and freeze

Copy the file (yes, make a copy) and name the file something like  x.zip See if the file can be opened. ODT files are stored in a ZIP format so you should be able to see the files. If the file cannot be opened as a ZIP then the file is likely not recoverable. If you are able to open the ZIP
