As to "I get a small letter in the upper left hand corner..." I'm trying to understand. 1. by "small letter" do you mean that when you begin typing the letter on screen is small and so is difficult to read? 2. by "small letter" do you mean lower case letter, as in "a" vs "A", and is the small letter always there whenever a new document is started? If #1 there are several things that can affect the apparent size of the letter. 1.a. Zoom setting in Writer - sets how much of the Writer window is filled by the document. Zoom in more and the apparent size of the letters increases. Via the menu View>Zoom. 1.b. Font size (only applies to the current Writer document) - the default should be 12. That is generally easily legible on my screens and is a common font size for printed documents. If the size is less than 12 that may be part of your problem. Increase the font size to 12. 1.c. Font scaling (applies to all fonts shown on the computer screen no matter what program) - affects how the fonts display on the screen and is used to make them larger than they would look otherwise. ALL fonts on screen are scaled. The scaling does not affect the size of printed fonts. If your screen is high resolution then the letters will appear smaller than on a same size screen with a lower resolution. Font scaling allows adjusting for that. It is usually in the "Accessibility" section of settings. If #2 then I suspect the default template has been changed. Fixing that will require modifying the default template to remove the pesky letter that has been added to it.
