Re: Open office writer

2015-03-03 Thread
Please care, as we do.

2015-03-03 13:52 GMT+08:00 S F spf457capm...@gmail.com:

 1) It is quite hard to just 'drop an email to' open office. I don't really
want to sign up, log it, make an account etc. So there is a huge
disincentive to provide feedback to open office about stuff that people
 think should be changed.

Assuming open office is trying to satisfy as many people as possible, then
if we don't like it, open office should change it.

 Here's the thing:
It is very frustrating to simply type part of a line, then go to the next
line, and type part of a line without open office writer double spacing.
 So:

 Want this:

 Blah blah blah
 Blah blah blah.

 Get this:

 Blah blah blah

 Blah blah blah.

I can single space partial lines by carriage return without causing double
space on every app except open office writer; it automatically seems to
double space. I don't really care why it does this, or how to get around
 it. Just change it, please!

It is very very frustrating, making it impossible to create a
 professional-looking piece of writing.

 Thanks,
 Steve

Applications and computers do not improve or update without you, the
user in command, deciding they need it.

If you're happy with your current versions of AOO, operating system and
computer hardware, you are free to just stick with what you have and ignore
any Update available suggestion. What's the point of blaming others for
 your own decisions?

Then of course, if you have a specific problem with AOO, which you cannot
solve with the built-in Help system, most people on this list will be happy
 to help.

To me, this mailing list is a much better option than any online user
forums, where one has to dig through millions of posts hoping to find
 suitable solutions.

So if you want to make the most of this mailing list, how about you post
one (or more) specific questions that relate to your specific issues?

Let us know how we can help.

That is the preferred way of using the product, but it does not negate the
need for the feature. It does, however, possibly make it more difficult to
implement. I think that the real problem is that it requires a
knowledgeable person (as in someone who would be able to code the solution)
to care enough to choose to do it. This is, after all, community developed
software. So, the trick is to convince a particular person to spend time /
energy on that particular feature. In this case, it means that the feature
must be first designed, since a design does not exist, and, the general
usage pattern is sufficiently different, that it is not obvious to me that
saying copy from WP is sufficient.

Finding someone that cares enough to actually implement really is the
hardest part. The product has many users, but, I only see 25 people on the
CC list for the enhancement request and only 201 votes for implementation.

 https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=3395

So, if one talented person cares enough to do it, it will happen.
Otherwise, I suppose that sufficient people need to vote for the feature.
WIth as many users as exist, only finding 201 people who want it enough to
put one of their votes towards it in over 10 years feels a little
spartan. Perhaps the problem is that the people that want it do not know
that they can vote for it. I will admit, however, that I don't have a
handle on how many votes it would require to push it up the list, and I
lack the time right now to check to see where it stands relative to other
requests. I do see that most people that voted put two of their votes
 towards it.

 https://issues.apache.org/ooo/page.cgi?id=voting/bug.htmlbug_id=3395

Compared to using wysiwyg web page creator without ability to view code.
Styles does nothing to correct skewed page; however, viewing the codes is
 a very helpful tool.

I don't think you can. You could copy any text and paste it into a text
(Writer) document, which will then display some of what you need: you could
spot double spaces, paragraph breaks, inappropriate tabs, and so on. This
may (or may not) be a workaround.

Here's another trick: you can search for non-printing characters using
[:cntrl:] . This will discover some such characters in a presentation, but
not all. You can also search for tabs using \t - and so on.

 I trust this helps.

Safety and bravery are developed slowly, just as driving a car.

At last, you are on you way, and on your own.

I had the same problem. The solution was to click on Preferences under the
Apple, select Security Privacy. You will get the message Allow Apps
downloaded from Mac App Store or Mac App Store and Identified Developers or
Anywhere. You will have to enter your password which will allow you to
click on the lock to make changes. Click on the lock to unlock, then
select Anywhere. You should then be able to install Open Office.
After installed go back and select Mac App Store and Identified
Developers, then click on the lock, which will get you back to a safe place,
Since Open Office has many, many developers Apple will not recognize it as
 a safe application.

We can do it automatically, as much as manually, as much as you. Maybe perl
will be fun to you.

2014/1/20 Gregory P. Ennis po...@pomec.net

 Everyone,

I am using openoffice writer to open up a text file that is being
created with a null octal \000\ as the end of file marker. When
openoffice opens the file it replaces the null with a # character.

The software I am using to create the text file is unable to create the
text file without a null at the end of the file. Is there a way to get
openoffice to ignore the null and not translate the null into a #

 Thanks for your help!!!

 Greg Ennis
 -

I could not figure out how to get openoffice to ignore the null, but I
did figure out a fix for the problem. I wrote a perl script that is
activated before openoffice that removes the null at the end of the text
file before it passes the file to openoffice.

However, if there is a way for openoffice to do this I would be
 interested in your comments.

 Greg Ennis

True, but it would be a big help if the list software could be
configured to tag the subject line of messages that had passed
moderation with something like [MODERATED]. This was done (albeit not
with 100% reliably) on the old OOo users list.

bug report is, they have no true understanding of what community
supported software is all about. They have no clue you are volunteering
your time and efforts. All they want is help solving their immediate

Folks responding with just open your backup is no help at all and will
only push the user to drop OO altogether. To some of you I'm sure that's
fine, you are seasoned users, maybe even experts and you would gladly not
have to bother with the noob, but that's not what this list is about. It's
about support. Supporting the users of Open Office no matter their level

Please be polite and offer constructive suggestions and recommendations.
Hold their hand and walk them through step by step if you need to, but
