The user is asking about Open Office. The second reply directed him to a
converter from Microsoft that allows him to convert MS Works file into Word
format. OpenOffice handles word documents just fine. End of story. If AOO
could not handle a simple doc file with 'recipes it would be ludicrous.

Once upon a time, OOo could open MS Works documents.
Whether or not LibreOffice retained that capacity, I do not know.
But it appears that Apache OpenOffice does not have that functionality.

The only reason I know about that capacity, is because I used the wrong
setting to open WordPerfect documents. (The error message was Not an
MS Works file.)

Apache OpenOffice cannot handle documents in Microsoft Works word processor
(.wps) format. So do you think it ludicrous? Or are you confusing Word and
 Works?

No, I didn't write much of that. Please be careful about attribution.

Indeed - as I suggested to the original questioner.

MS Works 8.0

2014-09-22 Thread sailordave6872
I just downloaded OpenOffice 4.1.1 and would like to use it to open our old MS
Works (wps) documents using OpenOffice. Wife has over 400 recipes in wps
format. We have MS Works on the old laptop and want to transfer the documents
in the new laptop. Is there some extension I can download to OpenOffice to
convert these documents from wps to txt or some other common file format?

Here's what Microsoft say to do:
https://support.microsoft.com/kb/315757

There are 3 different methods, depending what you have on your
computer. I'm assuming you will have to download that converter to save
a Word files, which OO should be able to open.

The best way to open MS Works file is to use LibreOffice,
http://libreoffice.org/download/

You can then save them in ODF format and open them in Apache OpenOffice if
you want.
