But when did you save the file? If you deleted some text, did a
control z and then the program crashed, then the file on disk has not
changed. Unless you did something like: delete some text, save the
file, did a control-z and then it crashed? But if you did that then
you were vulnerable to many ways of losing your document, such as a
power outage.

If the information is critical it might be retrieved using a sector
editor. Search the drive for a phrase
known to be in the file and if you're lucky, the rest will be with it.
When editing important files
it's a good idea to keep incremental backups. When a file is saved with
the same name, the original

is effectively over written and won't be in the trash.

IIRC, this is what the VAX 11/780 editor did automagically. Every time
you changed a file, you got a new version.

Hello Nick, and so sorry for your troubles.

It would be very helpful to us if you gave more details on how this
 happened.
Did OpenOffice find these pages but fail to open them? And if that was the
cause, what was used to create these pages initially?

Or, was it some other problem.

Thanks for any additional details you can provide.

If your file was important at all, I assume you back it up after every
change, so just recover your file from one of your backups. Problem solved.
