However, the .doc format from earlier Microsoft Write programs is 
readable with very little if any format difference from the later .docx 
format. Anyone with the software to write .docx files should have no 
problem reading .doc files.

hello every one again.
i have a very valuable documents saved in microsoft office with docx
format.
when i opened them with openoffice writer and if i change even one
character,
openoffice instead of saving the changes, actives the save as dialog
and wants to change the extention of format.
for example: converts my documents to .odt or .doc.
how can i prevent this problem?
i realy appreciate your help.
