can you please clarify a bit more why you can't use the 3.3 repo?

One thing 3.3 isn't yet available and second I'm still on 3.2 and would
like keep the amount of admin to a minimum.

i may got the versions wrong, but it sounds like you are asking to
release the 3.3 version to 3.2 users?
(this is only for the guest, so doesn't affect the engine and hosts)

Yes, since ovirt-guest-agent for ovirt-3.3 does work for 3.2 too it
would be nice to have the guest-agent available in the 3.2 repo too instead
of adding a, coming, 3.3 repo in a 3.2 environment.

Fedora seems to have ovirt-guest-agent-common in it's default repo,
whereas EL6 does not have any (even in EPEL) is this correct? It would be
nice to have it readily available instead of having to install a repo just
 for one package.

The EPEL6 package is now available in the updates repository. You should
now be able to install the ovirt-guest-agent from EPEL

Awesome!

  The EPEL6 package is here:
 http://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/buildinfo?buildID=456118

Joop, I tried installing just the RPM alone from the 3.3 repo and that
worked fine, that could be a workaround?

It is ok to use it, however you'll have some errors in the VDSM log about
an unknown 'fqdn' message sent by the guest agent. Which you can ignore, it
is not creating any problems, besides some log messages.

[Users] oVirt Node Hypervisor 2.6.1 on oVirt 3.3 fails

2013-10-01 Thread Mike Kolesnik
- Original Message -

 Hi Mike,

Hi Udaya,

Can I add oVirt Node Hypervisor 2.6.1 (f18) to the oVirt3.3 Engine setup on
f19..? Do I need to setup a new oVirt Node Hypervisor for oVirt3.3?

I got an error - Host .xxx.xxx installation failed. Unexpected connection
termination - after approving the host in the oVirt Web Administration
 portal.

Can you please attach the relevant logs from the engine/node for this error?

 Please suggest.

 Thank You.

 Udaya Kiran

Hi,

I have recently set up an oVirt environment, I think in a pretty
standard fashion, with engine 3.3 on one host, one oVirt host on a
physical machine, both running CentOS 6.4, using NFS for all storage
 domains.

Please provide rpm -qa on the ovirt rpms (ovirt engine).

ovirt-engine-dbscripts-3.3.0-1.el6.noarch
ovirt-engine-lib-3.3.0-4.el6.noarch

Today I was playing around with snapshots, when I noticed that the
Snapshots panel didn't show any of the snapshots I created, not even the
'Current - Active VM' snapshot that all VMs have.

Not sure why this has happened. How do you know that snapshot
creation was completed? Did you look at the events tab? (Asking to be
sure) engine.log will be quite helpful here.

I find engine.log somewhat hard to read, to be honest, and documentation
is hard to find, but I think I found some clues.

I tried to create 4 snapshots of a certain VM, 2 of which completed
normally and 2 of which failed:

Failed with VDSM error SNAPSHOT_FAILED and code 48

However, what I find most upsetting, is that the VMs that disappeared
were not the subject of my experiments. I was creating snapshots of a
single VM, and the VMs that disappeared were unrelated. As a matter of
fact, the VM I was experimenting with IS THE ONLY ONE that survived.

By the way, the Snapshots panel has been displaying snapshots correctly
for a while, but when I logged in this morning, it appeared empty again,
for all VMs.

Is there anything I can check to see what causes this?

Not sure what to do, I decided to restart the ovirt-engine process.

When I logged back on to the administrator panel, I was shocked to
see 2endWith of my 4 VMs completely missing from the inventory. I
haven't been able to find back a single trace of either machine,
neither in the portal nor on disk. It seems like they never
existed. The storage of both VMs seems to be erased from the data
 domain.

Not sure why storage domain was erased. About Vms disappeared - there
were previous discussions on that at users@ovirt.org. In a nutshell,
due to a bug (that was already fixed) prior to the restart you might
have had records at thetable that contained value of
empty guid (a string in UUID format with only 0 and - ) at the
vdsm_task_id_column. This means that the task is not associated with
a real SPM task, and when the engine restarts, if for a given flow
(let's say - snapshot creation) there are tasks with such
vdsm_task_id, the flow will end with failure. For some flows ,
ending with failure means erasing the vm (for example - real failure
of importing a vm). By the way, similar issue can probably occur with
disks as well, as there are flows that run async tasks that deal with
 disks.

I think I have an idea about what happended now.

The 2 disappeared VMs have been imported into oVirt using virt-v2v. The
3rd one that's now missing a disk volume was not, but I have been
playing with storage migration in the past.

Yesterday's engine.log seems to suggest, that all of these tasks
(importing the 2 VMs and trying to move a volume) have been restarted
immediately after restarting Engine. After failure, the VMs and volume
were removed. It seems to fit the above description of the bug.

So...

What can I do to prevent this from happening again?

Should I periodically check the 'async_tasks' table for anomalies? Is
there a bugfix I can apply, or should I wait for a new release of oVirt?
If the latter, when is that expected to happen?

Thanks,
Martijn.

[Users] iptables settings/scripts ovirt 3.3

2013-10-01 Thread Sven Kieske
Hi,

we have an test environment with ovirt 3.3 installed on various
hardware nodes.

The management node is installed on an centos 6.4 x64 minimal.

The issue we are running into is, that some ovirt component
keeps resetting the iptables firewall configuration, denying
access to ports 80 and 443, which results in the web interface
being not accessible.

We do know that the engine-setup initially configures the
firewall, but through which scripts does iptables get configured?

Are there some database entries for this?

If you need any logfiles for this, please let me know.

Currently we have disabled iptables, as it's just an test environment.

We read about some vdsm bootstrap script (e.g. BZ 893680), may this be
related?

However we didn't find out where this scripts resides.

Also vvyaz...@redhat.com posted in this BZ: not a bug.

I don't see why you shouldn't be able to ping the hypervisor in the
management lan? this is useful for monitoring and network debugging.

ICMP is no danger at all.

Kind regards

Re: [Users] iptables settings/scripts ovirt 3.3

2013-10-01 Thread Andrew Lau
Are you referring to /etc/sysconfig/iptables ? That's where the engine
setup configures iptables, when I provision my nodes I select Don't
configure firewall and let puppet manage my iptables rules for other
reasons.. not sure if that was what you're asking

On Tue, Oct 1, 2013 at 11:16 PM, Sven Kieske s.kie...@mittwald.de wrote:

 Hi,

we have an test environment with ovirt 3.3 installed on various
 hardware nodes.

Dne 1.10.2013 14:34, Martijn Grendelman napsal(a):

Hi,

I just had the same problem again.
- Stopped oVirt engine
- Checked the 'async_tasks' table. It was empty!
- Started oVirt engine
- Same set of imported VMs as last time deleted!

I thought that lingering records from the 'async_tasks' table were to
blame, but apparently, that's not the case.

Can you tell me what I need to check/do/modify/update/delete before
restarting oVirt that will keep my VMs from being deleted? (Please see
below for a note on upgrading like you suggested)

make sure you dont have records at async_tasks with vdsm_task_id of
empty guid - but i'm really not in favor of such hacks, this is a
hack. I strongly suggest you solve upgrade issue (please communicate
with ofer on this).

OK, I understand that, but for the record: 'async_tasks' was completely
empty before I started Engine, so this hack wouldn't have been of any use.

I do not recommend this, but:

I ensure, that the template is not being used (engine off ;) enable the
lv on one of the hypervisors and access the templates disk directly.
Then umount, disable the lv.

[Users] Resizing disks destroys contents

2013-10-01 Thread Martijn Grendelman
Hi,

I just tried out another feature of oVirt and again, I am shocked by the
results.

I did the following:
- create new VM based on an earlier created template, with 20 GB disk
- Run the VM - boots fine
- Shut down the VM
- Via Disks - Edit - Extend size by(GB) add 20 GB to the disk
- Run the VM

Result: no bootable device. Linux installation gone.

Just to be sure, I booted the VM with a gparted live iso, and gparted
reports the entire 40 GB as unallocated space.

Where's my data? What's wrong with my oVirt installation? What am I

Re: [Users] iptables settings/scripts ovirt 3.3

2013-10-01 Thread Sven Kieske
Yeah, we added our own rules with system-config-firewall-tui
but somehow ovirt-engine seems to override these custom set
values after some time, we couldn't find out until now what
keeps changing the iptables, there seems to be some kind of automatic
script called vdsm bootstrap script which does configure the firewall,
but we are not sure this is the reason why the iptables entries for
ports 80 and 443 keep vanishing.

So I'm asking for information what components of ovirt are capable
of changing iptables and in which way do these components do this?

Are these components started automatically in any way?

I couldn't find anything in the docs related to this, even not in the
RedHat docs regarding RHEV.

Kind Regards

Sven

We have a NFS storage cluster (Isilon) for the domain.

The main question: is there a way to bring in an existing storage domain

I'm not sure if KVM does support this, but I would say that this feature
can be very dangerous as you might not know what's the status of your vm
(e.g. someone installed new tools and you update a library in the
template and therefor also in the vm which could make some of these
tools unusable...).

If you want to change/update applications either a
configuration/software management solution like puppet, spacewalk,... or
an application streaming solution would be the better and safer choice.

yes, importing an existing data domain is a high priority for us for
next version as the issue was raised several times by community users.

for 3.3, there a few options (the first one is the cleanest)
1. save the export part
- stop using the domain in 3.1
- change its meta data to that of an export domain
- import it as an existing export domain to 3.3
- import the VMs

2. re-create the VMs / import disks
- stop using the domain in 3.1
- create a new (empty) domain in 3.3
- move all disks to the new domain (assuming you create the new nfs
export in a way allowing you to move, not copy, from the old export)
- use the register disk api to add all disks
- create VMs and associate the disks to them

yes, this one requires to document first which disk is for which VM.
i think someone scripted something around this option.

if your disks have snapshots, this may become too complex.

3. re-create the VMs and override their disks.
this was suggested several times in the past, but if you have snapshots,
not relevant.

11:41 orc_orc SvenKieske: * nod * that effect would occur

11:41 SvenKieske and I think this default iptables rule is
just plain useless :)
11:42 SvenKieske and prevents proper network debugging, as
we are having some issues with network related to newest ovirt

11:42 orc_orc SvenKieske: assumedly you are following a

and he pointed to the wiki outline at:

11:43 orc_orc but from a policy POV, it may make sense that
a node is not reachible until it has had time to become

.. and I also pointed out an example of an ICMP fragmantation
attack and its remdiation in the Red Hat bugzilla

I don't see why you shouldn't be able to ping the hypervisor in the
management lan? this is useful for monitoring and network debugging.

ICMP is no danger at all.

and in IRC he there stated

11:45 SvenKieske I'm not sure you can harden this node any
further, as it resides on a read only file system, beside
that, I can not think of any attack vector via icmp on the
compute node

11:46 orc_orc SvenKieske: there are some ICMP attacks,
particularly on ipv6 stacks, which can cause machines to fall
over and die

11:46 orc_orc I reported one a while back
11:47 orc_orc the packet reassembly code had an unsuspected
re-construction method with a problem in it

and at that point he concluded that perhaps the ICMP block
limitation had policy reasons behind it

11:49 SvenKieske Well then that's fine with me, but maybe
the node devs should more focus on reliable network
configuration and then harden it for security and not the
other way around, it was just a small nuisance, if network
setup in 3.3 would work ootb I'd maybe never noticed ping
doesn't work ootb

to which I can only respond:

11:49 orc_orc SvenKieske: sounds like you are saying that
you need to file an RFE as to debugging tools extensions

or amend the setup documentation

I had a private inquiry about KVM hardening and so had been
looking at the physdev iptables rules recently, and on a VM
for which I am responsible an incident just last weekend

11:50 orc_orc SvenKieske: I had a person at my office just
today, who was the victim of a TOR attack on a VM

11:50 orc_orc so VM's _do_ get scanned for and attacked

... in part we mitigated the attack via a temporary iptables
rule on the KVM based hypervisor ...

and he closed that he may file something tomorrow.

11:50 SvenKieske yeah, might be the way to go, but my
workday is over now, so maybe tomorrow :)

11:50 orc_orc SvenKieske * nod * don't forget ;)

11:51 SvenKieske I'm all in for more computer security :)
11:51 SvenKieske see you!

11:51 * orc_orc waves

I've been working through the setup documentation as well
since the 3.3 update, and have a list of questions as to the
wiki materials, as of course bit rot happens in wiki's (heck,
in _any_ documentation) as new releases are issued

2013-10-01 Thread Yeela Kaplan
Hi,
Was just looking at it before you resolved it, so just out of curiousity...
What was the problem?

 Hi all,

I am using ovirt 3.3 on Centos6. Things were running fine untill I had nfs as
the deata storage for my data center.
Now I have created a new data center of type iscsi, but I am not able to add
the iscsi storage to this Datacenter.

This is all what i did.

1I created a new datacenter of type iscsi
2configured a cluster to this datacenter
3moved my host to this cluster.
4Now navigated to the storage tab
 5Clicked on new domain
 6selected data/iscsi
 7discovered the iscsi iqn

but when I login to that iqn the login is not successful.
I am attaching you a screenshot.

 Thanks.
 saurabh.

Re: [Users] Migration issues with ovirt 3.3

Now the debian vm it's not working. After try the migration of the Windows
vm, the live migration it's not working in the debian.

The fact that now both VMs behave the same makes comparing them
fruitless. Still it may be intersting to see your vdsm.log (from source
and destination) since the first time a faulty VM was started until the
'iface' exception.

Do you think that this issue it's related to the hosts or with the manager?

It smells very much Vdsm-specific, but I'm only guessing.

i really would like to get this working and to other user this is working
fine. Do you think if that i make a whole new install maybe this start to
 work?

I do not suppose this would help, but I'm not in the position to exclude
exploration routes.

I'm going to test what Michal say right now with the same host, but i think
that's going to happen the same thing.

Re: [Users] Upgrade from 3.1

2013-10-01 Thread Christian Kolquist
I am planning on testing the modify existing to become an export domain.
That will only require me to copy within the isilon cluster a copy of the
data which only will take about 1 hour. The plan is to do the following:

1. Load Fedora 19 on new engine server and install the engine, add new
storage domain shares and get fully up and running without adding any nodes
2. shutdown all VM's and then remove the nodes
3. shutdown engine on current server
4. copy the existing storage domain to another location on the NAS and
share it out over NFS.
5. Add nodes to new engine
6. Modify the copy of the storage domain to be an export domain (
http://humblec.com/convert-master-data-domain-to-export-domain-in-a-crashed-rhevmovirt-setup/
)
7. Add it in as an existing export domain on the new engine server and
start import of VM's (will take probably 4-6 hours or maybe longer, total
storage is ~1TB of data)

Are there any further suggestions to this? If this plan fails then I will
be able to revert back to the original engine server and domain.

Christian

We have a NFS storage cluster (Isilon) for the domain.

to a new engine without exporting it then importing it? This would be
good for not just upgrades but also disaster recovery as well.

yes, importing an existing data domain is a high priority for us for next
version as the issue was raised several times by community users.

for 3.3, there a few options (the first one is the cleanest)
 1. save the export part

So, after many frustrating weekends of trying to upgrade ovirt

I have come to the conclustion that it would just be best to
 export all

 installation
with FC19 and ovirt 3.3. Is there a way to export the entire
 domain
easily? Or to bring the entire domain into a new install of the
 engine?

Exporting a single VM takes a very long while. It would take a
 couple
of days to export all of our VM's (33 total vm's using 1.017 TB
 of data)
and then reimport them using the normal means of exporting the
 machines
off then on to the export domain, load the new engine server
 then import
 them all back in.

Any tips or tricks would be welcome.

do you have a single data domain in the DC?
is it nfs or something else?

 Christian

FYI, I ran into just about every single bug that people had when
upgrading from 3.1 to 3.2 and a few more. I can't spend any
 more time
troubleshooting the upgrade process. If we can't do the
 export-import
easily or migrate the current storage domain we will probably
 have to
get rid of ovirt and move to another solution.

I'm having this issue on my ovirt 3.3 setup (two node, one is AIO,
GlusterFS storage, both on F19) as well.

[Users] About the Backup-Restore API Integration

2013-10-01 Thread emi...@gmail.com
Hi,

I'm testing ovirt to replace ESXi. Right now I want know if there is
something like guettoVCB.sh (https://communities.vmware.com/docs/DOC-8760)
that i can use with oVirt.

I'm checking the following link:
http://www.ovirt.org/Features/Backup-Restore_API_Integration but i don't
understand if this feature it's aviable right now and if it allow me to do
something like what guettoVCB.sh do.
