[Users] oVirt Updates - Special KVM Forum/oVirt edition

2013-10-27 Thread Itamar Heim
A great week at linuxcon/cloudopen/kvmforum/ovirt conference at
Edinburgh, and some other nice feedback on oVirt, meriting a special
edition of this update.

Feel free to chime in with your feedback as well.

It is sometimes hard to remember we only released oVirt 3.0 last year,
and that it takes time to get traction.
For example, see slide 3 in the presentation i gave on oVirt Updates[1]
to see the clear trend in adoption (via total users mailing list addresses).

Similarly, in Livnat's oVirt-intro session at CloudOpen, with ~75 people
in the room, almost all raised their hand on her question "who knows/has
oVirt".

We had a plethora of topics (same link as [1]), but i wanted to highlight:

SUSE support
During Livnat's talk, a question was raised wrt SUSE support.
Asking for more details, we got ~"I'm running oVirt in testing and RHEV
in production. with 200 SUSE 10/11 servers. I just want the guest-agent
to have their ip address in the gui".

So first of all, good to know SUSE runs as a guest without issues.
Also, the guest-agent itself is just a python script that should just
work. Just some packaging is required, so we're looking to revamp this
in build.opensuse.org, and hope some SUSE users will help us with
closing and testing this one.

In related SUSE news, I just saw this posted "After looking into oVirt
it looks absolutely fantastic. Might look into seeing if I can help with
porting this to openSUSE. What kind of work is involved in the porting
of the application like this?"

(discussion ongoing)

on PPC:
Leonardo from the Eldorado research center in Brazil gave a lecture on
their work to add PPC support to oVirt. Paul Mackerras (KVM PPC
developer) from IBM and Alexenader Graf attended and gave a lot of
feedback, and potential interest from other PPC vendors, which should be
hopefully mostly config level changes.

User Stories:
Keele university presented their path to oVirt. Always nice to hear how
our project is used, and we actually asked them a lot of questions on
why/how they use it the way they do. They also did a case study with
Dave Neary, which i hope to see more from oVirt community members.

Also, always nice to hear: in an irc chat on #ovirt: "I looked at ovirt
about 4 months ago and when I came back a few days ago I was blown away
at how far it had come! The devs have done an awesome job".

All KVM Forum/oVirt sessions slides (and youtube's) should be available
here[1]

Thanks,
   Itamar

[Users] ovirt nagios plugin email flood on engine upgrade

2013-10-27 Thread Itamar Heim

Hi René,

a question - when we upgrade the engine, we move the service to down.
at that point, nagios is sending lots of emails on each failing
monitored resource due to inability to connect to the API.

Is thee a way to report this "once" per the root cause for all monitored
resources?

Thanks,

if you have everything in the db, its easier to not clean install, since
we're still missing an easy "import data domain".

what is the status of your hosts?
can you share engine logs?

Re: [Users] GlusterFS on oVirt node

2013-10-27 Thread Saša Friedrich

Progress report:

I remounted fs on oVirt nodes rw, started glusterd with no errors.
Then I activated hosts in oVirt Engine. Also no errors! Yei!

Then I created volume (replication), added two bricks (oVirt nodes), and
started volume. Seems fine. I checkd on node1:

# gluster volume info

Volume Name: data_vol
Type: Replicate
Volume ID: a1cdc762-2198-47e2-9b4a-58fd0571b269
Status: Started
Number of Bricks: 1 x 2 = 2
Transport-type: tcp
Bricks:
Brick1: 192.168.254.124:/data/gluster
Brick2: 192.168.254.141:/data/gluster
Options Reconfigured:
storage.owner-gid: 36
storage.owner-uid: 36
auth.allow: *
user.cifs: on
nfs.disable: off

WORKING!

BUT... Now i can not create storage domain. When I hit OK button on
"New storage domain dialog", process is running very long. Eventually
this process stops and returns " Error while executing action Add
Storage Connection: Network error during communication with the Host".

I'm stuck again :-( in need for HELP!

tnx

Yes, mount -oremount,rw make's the FS temporarily writeable. But you
will have issues as soon as you reboot.
We'll need to investigate which paths need to be persisted (so the data
written to them survives a reboot) and which only need to be write-able
e.g. for temporary data.

Would you mind opening a bug for this?

Then I created volume (replication), added two bricks (oVirt nodes),
and started volume. Seems fine. I checkd on node1:

# gluster volume info

Volume Name: data_vol

Type: Replicate
Volume ID: a1cdc762-2198-47e2-9b4a-58fd0571b269
Status: Started

Transport-type: tcp

Brick1: 192.168.254.124:/data/gluster
Brick2: 192.168.254.141:/data/gluster
Options Reconfigured:
storage.owner-gid: 36
storage.owner-uid: 36
auth.allow: *
user.cifs: on
nfs.disable: off

WORKING!

BUT... Now i can not create storage domain. When I hit OK button on
"New storage domain dialog", process is running very long. Eventually
this process stops and returns " Error while executing action Add
Storage Connection: Network error during communication with the
Host".

I'm stuck again :-( in need for HELP!

Could you please provide the logfiles mentioned here:

I installed ovirt (nested kvm - home testing) following "Up and Running

Install went well. Everything is working fine.

Now I created two hosts (nested kvm - ovirt node fc19 - just for
testing) and added them in oVirt.
Super fine - working!

Now I'd like to use this hosts as glustefs nodes too. Acording to google
(I'm googling for two days now) I'ts possible, but I can not find any
usable how-to

1. I removed these two hosts from default data center
2. I created new data center (type: GlusterFS)
3. I created new cluster (Enable Gluster Service checked)
4. I added host
5. Now I get error message in events: "Could not find gluster uuid of

If I ssh to my host (fc19 node) glusterd.service is not running. If I
try to run it It returns error

Re: [Users] [node-devel] GlusterFS on oVirt node

2013-10-27 Thread Saša Friedrich
Thanks, I'll try that (and report). And I think data in that path don't
need to be persistant, because when I reboot node, and make whole fs rw
again, host gets attached to oVirt with no errors.

One more thing. Messages log file keep getting me errors (every 2 sec):

Oct 25 08:32:50 localhost python[462]: service-status:
ServiceNotExistError: Tried all alternatives but failed:
Oct 25 08:32:50 localhost python[462]: ServiceNotExistError:

So I somehow lost hope for node and tried makeing host from fc19
(minimal installation). Installed, attached host in oVirt engine, but...
Errors are the same!

Any clue?

tnx

persist this setting after reboot.

Hey,

do you know if the data in /var/lib/glusterd needs to survive reboots?
If not, then this patch http://gerrit.ovirt.org/20540 will probably fix
the problem. The patch just adds that path to /etc/rwtab.d/ovirt - this
will tell the read-only root to make that path writable at boot.
Due to the nature of Node you will need to build your own image or wait
until the patch lands in an image. Editing the rwtab file by hand at
runtime won't have an effect.

Hi Thomas,

The MacPoolRanges is preset to what range was reserved initially when oVirt was
being developed.
Of course, in a LAN this doesn't make much difference as the possibility of MAC
"hijack" from a hardware vendor is extremely low.
The 3 first bytes in a MAC specify the vendor ID, and the 3 last bytes the
"card" address (explained in http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MAC_address ), so I'm
not sure why this was limited to 256 addresses but you can of course change the
limit.
I'm guessing it was set not to interfere with addresses used by libvirt that
you may have running in the LAN which use the same vendor ID.

Also please notice you can have multiple ranges separated by comma
e.g. MacPoolRanges:
00:1A:4A:97:5E:00-00:1A:4A:97:5E:FF,00:1A:4A:97:5F:00-00:1A:4A:97:5F:FF

Now the other value, MaxMacsCountInPool simply limits the MAC pool size so if
you have a pool that is too big the engine won't start.
So for example if you have pools
00:1A:4A:97:5E:00-00:1A:4A:97:5E:FF,00:1A:4A:97:5F:00-00:1A:4A:97:5F:FF it's OK
since there are 256 + 256 = 512 < 10 MACs
But, if you have pools
00:1A:4A:00:00:00-00:1A:4A:00:FF:FF,00:1A:4A:01:00:00-00:1A:4A:01:FF:FF it will
fail since there are 65536 + 65536 = 131072 > 10 MACs

Hope this helps,
Mike
