Re: [Users] centralized Logging engine and hypervisor

2014-03-20 Thread Sven Kieske
Hi and thanks for this reply, I guess this will help me.

I'm going to test it.

Meanwhile I want to ask:

Is this the correct location for an configuration file?

I know it is maybe not intended for normal use to
tweak this file, but I think it is a configuration file
after all and should be under /etc/ like all the others?

(This is why I didn't find it, I was just looking under /etc/ )

This issue aside, the new point release should still support
older vdsm versions.

I haven't done the upgrade in my dev environment yet so I'm
glad for the report.

Maybe worth filing a BZ (after some more investigation)?

 Hi,

 I'm trying to clone a VM from snapshot with the below code. but it is not
 cloning..

 org.ovirt.engine.sdk.decorators.VM vm2 = api.getVMs().get(testVM);
 VM cloneVM = new VM();
 cloneVM.setName(MyClonedViaAPI);
 VMSnapshot snap3 = new VMSnapshot(null);
 snap3 =
 vm2.getSnapshots().get(UUID.fromString(7799ce3f-a007-415a-84c5-df323e8f440d));
 Action act = new Action();
 act.setClone(true);
 act.setVm(cloneVM);
 snap3.restore(act);

 Actually, my original goal is to Clone VM directly from another VM instead of
 cloning from snapshot.

 Can you help me?

Just pasting here code given by Juan H for Java SDK to perform that :

You will need something like this:

// Find the original VM:
VM vm = api.getVMs().get(myvm);

// Find the cluster where the cloned VM will be created:
Cluster cluster = vm.getCluster();

// Populate the parameters to create the snapshot:
Snapshot snapshot = new Snapshot();
snapshot.setDescription(My snapshot);

// Send the request to create the snapshot. Note that you need the
// returned snapshot object in order to have the id assigned to
// that snapshot by the system.
snapshot = vm.getSnapshots().add(snapshot);
String id = snapshot.getId();
UUID uuid = UUID.fromString(id);

// Wait till the snapshot creation is completed:
for ( {
snapshot = vm.getSnapshots().get(uuid);
if (!locked.equals(snapshot.getSnapshotStatus())) {
break;
}
Thread.sleep(1 * 1000);
}

// Populate the parameters to create the cloned VM:
VM clone = new VM(null);
clone.setName(myclone);
clone.setCluster(cluster);
Snapshots snapsshots = new Snapshots();
snapsshots.getSnapshots().add(snapshot);
clone.setSnapshots(snapsshots);

// Send the request to create the cloned VM:
api.getVMs().add(clone);

 Thanks for the link, for documentation purposes, I'll post my findings
 here to, so if someone needs this in the future, feel free to use it:

 Here is a custom implemented syslog handler for jboss 7.1:

 http://randomtekkstuff.blogspot.de/2013/03/jboss-as-7-syslog-handler.html

 I will test this out, once I found the jboss module directory..

I think the runtime directory is in /usr/share/ovirt-engine/modules, after
ps aux |grep ovirt

 In the meantime:

 Would ovirt-devs consider it save to sideload my own
 jboss module?

 I know this will get painful to maintain once I want to upgrade
 so I'm already asking:

 Is there a chance as a first step to include a custom
 syslog handler jboss module into ovirt (for jboss 7.2) ?

I think oVirt uses jboss-modules-maven-plugin to create a module,
If you want to create one, the syslog handler in your case,
you may create a subproject containing the java code and
tweak some of the pom.xml adding the jboss-modules-maven-plugin config,
as the other modules do.

 Later this could get expanded to easily allow to use syslog..

Hey all,

Am I missing something or is it not possible to snapshot a virtual disk
onto a different storage domain?

 Hi,

 LUNs size are being updated using the multipath mechanism. In order to
 update storage domain size, you'll need to update the physical volume size
 using LVM on you hypervisors.

 Please do the following:
 1) Put the storage domain to maintenance
 2) Execute on your hosts:
 'pvresize --setphysicalvolumesize' with the new physical volume size (150G)
 3) Activate the storage domain

 Thank you Elad,
 I knew it was required a pvresize command but wanted to be sure that I
 wasn't disrupting possible storage parameters bookkeeping by the oVirt
 system.
 I'm wondering if it's because of this that SD has to be put in maintenance.

 Any chance to have the SD resize without putting it offline, for
 example doing pvresize on the SPM node and then pvscan on every other
 host involved?
 I'm sure there are use cases where this is would be of great convenience.

Well, I'm back on this.
First of all, Elad, your procedure works indeed.

Moreover, I tried this sequence:
1) Expand the volume using storage specific tools

2) on the SPM host execute
 pvresize /path/of/the/physical/volume # (no need to specify the
size, it takes the full volume space)

3) (just to be sure) on every other host involved execute
 pvscan

4) the SD is shown with correct, updated, informations.

Maybe I am overzealous but I prefer to ask the experts:
Not putting the SD to maintenance could give unexpected consequences?

TIA,
Giorgio.

 Subject: [Users] SAN storage expansion

 Hi all,
 I'm happily continuing my experiments with oVirt and I need a
 suggestion regarding storage management.

 I'm using an iSCSI based Storage Domain and I'm trying to understand
 which is the correct way to extend it's size some time after it's
 creation.

 Please consider the following steps:

 1) Using storage specific tools create a new volume on iSCSI storage
 (e.g. 130.0 GiB)

 2) in oVirt webadmin: Storage - New Domain , select the previously
 created storage (130 GB), OK, after some time it's online:
  Size: 129 GB ; Available: 125 GB ; Used: 4 GB

 3) Use according to your needs (even noop is OK)

 4) Using storage specific tools expand the new volume (e.g. 20.0 GiB
 more, now it says 150.0GiB)

 5) in webadmin: Storage, click on the domain, Edit. Looking at
 LunsTargets , now it correctly sees 150GB

 BUT
 on the Storage tab it continues to be seen with
  Size: 129 GB ; Available: 125 GB ; Used: 4 GB

 Do you think it is possible to make oVirt aware of the new available
 storage space? Am I missing something obvious?

 My setup is oVirt 3.4.0 RC2 with fully patched CentOS 6.5 hosts.

 Best regards,
 Giorgio.

First: Thanks for the fast answer!

Second: I decided that this is a much too painful
hack into ovirt regarding maintainability, thus
I will let ovirt log into files like it does already
and pipe those into syslog.

But it would be cool if you could work towards
integrating this feature into ovirt in the future, maybe
for 3.5 or 4.0.

So I created an RFE at:

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1078738

I think many large data centers could use this feature
as most people tend to have centralized logging already.

 Well, probably due to other configuration included in this file, which
 users shouldn't rather touch.

 Alon, can you comment?

Hi,

The jboss service xml is sensitive monolithic block of data as any J2EE
resource, to make it complex, the format is XML.

We cannot put it in /etc as every upgrade requires to overwrite the file for
product to be usable.

In order to allow some level of customization we inject variable from
/etc/ovirt-engine/engine.conf[.d/*.conf] into the content upon service start.
As the logging part of this file, and the nature of the syntax is not fixed, I
yet not found a decent solution[1].

What I really want to see, is that we can programmatic control what loggers we
have and what level to enable and add these into our own configuration,
detaching from jboss configuration, and even maybe can modify the log level
dynamically at runtime as expected from this scale of application.

I had short discussion about this with Mooli, I hope someone is capable of
taking such task.

Alon

I can set the correct time, reboot, comes back up an hour behind. I’ve tried

What am I doing wrong?

And what affect does setting the time zone in the properties supposed to have

Hi,

and thanks for pointing this out.

Maybe my BZ at: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1078738

could suffice as a first subtask in solving this issue by introducing

a syslog handler module shipped by ovirt for jboss 7.1

and maybe additionally put another couple of log4j.xml into
/etc/ovirt-engine/engine.conf[.d/*.conf] for the purpose of
logging.

the log4j.xmls are better to edit at least.

Allow select the storage domain when add a new VM from template.
Currently the vm is created in the same datastore that the template.

you can clone the template disks to multiple storage domains in the
DC, then create the VM in any storage domain, for thinly provisioned.
for clone operation, iirc, you can do this even without having the
template in the target storage domain?

1 - I could not find a clone template option, only the option copy
when you select a template's disk in Templates-Disks. Is this copy
the clone that you mention?

2 - Then can't I use a storage domain only for templates (i.e. use a
slow performance storage only for templates)?

3 - Another question, when you convert a VM to template I see that it is
created with preallocated disk even if the original VM had thinly
provisioned disk. Is there no way to make the template with the same
type of disk (thinly provisioned)??

for other reasons in development (spice and friends must have

Allow select the storage domain when add a new VM from template.
Currently the vm is created in the same datastore that the template.

you can clone the template disks to multiple storage domains in the
DC, then create the VM in any storage domain, for thinly provisioned.
for clone operation, iirc, you can do this even without having the
template in the target storage domain?

1 - I could not find a clone template option, only the option copy
when you select a template's disk in Templates-Disks. Is this copy
the clone that you mention?

yes.

2 - Then can't I use a storage domain only for templates (i.e. use a
slow performance storage only for templates)?

only if you use clone, rather than thin provision. we don't want a
single disk chain spanning more then a single storage domain today.

3 - Another question, when you convert a VM to template I see that it is
created with preallocated disk even if the original VM had thinly
provisioned disk. Is there no way to make the template with the same
type of disk (thinly provisioned)??

on NFS - it doesn't matter.
on block storage - i don't remember why. maybe federico remembers.

[Users] proper way to move nfs data storage domain?

2014-03-20 Thread David Smith
Two examples;

1) I need to move the nfs data domain to a new server, whats the best way?

2) I think this applies the same as above, if I need to rename the nfs
server hostname, whats the best way?

I managed to export/import the export and iso domains and have them up
and running on the new server, however, since you can't import a data
domain, i'm wondering whats the best method for this.

thanks

2014-03-20 Thread David Smith
nevermind, it appears i've figured this out;
shut down all VMs
put the export and iso storage into maintenance mode
put data domain into maintenance mode
paths can be edited, in the system - storage tab
reenable everything

different procedure for iso/exports?

Re: [Users] proper way to move nfs data storage domain?

2014-03-20 Thread Trey Dockendorf
I believe for the iso/exports domain you can export them from the UI
Storage tab once they are detached from the data center, then import
them from new server. Haven't tested this thoroughly, but before my
system was production I had to shift storage domains around due to
host renaming.

It was for performance reasons since on block it would result in a qcow2
image. We wanted the access to the template to be as fast as possible.

The same question was brought up few months ago when we discussed importing
images from glance as templates. Anyway in that case we decided (for simplicity)
to allow the import as template also for qcow2 images.
