Don't know about your version and whether you have a dedicated or a
hosted-engine setup but in my case I have both types running and don't
experience any crashes, running a dedicated 3.4.3 engine(s)

I added the network under the networks tab, but I noticed it doesn't
ask any interface questions (ok, it could technically attempt arp on
all interfaces like a citrix netscaler). I notice theres no ifconfig
changes on the host. I also notice that the other interface has a
bridge named exactly as the management name in the UI; ovirtmgmt,
 which is bridged to eth0.
Sofar everything OK

OK, so I create a bridge called utility (my network name) and mapped
it to a vlan tagged interface I had setup on eth1.21. Everything looks
identical to how ovirt setup the initial network. The interface itself
works, I can see things on the network etc. Traffic passes.

Not needed. If you have created your networks then goto to the hosts
tab, select your host, select the Network Interfaces tab and hit Setup
Host Networks.
You'll get a window where you can drag and drop your defined networks to
an interface and define properties for them.

Trying to run the VM results in errors because its failing network
filters, says it doesn't exist etc. All I want to do, is create a VM
with some memory, some disk, with a nic on a network, across
individual machines. My PXE provisioning will take over from there.
Whats the best way to do this? Sorry for all the questions -- your
guys' response is great, and I really appreciate the help thus far.

I use theForeman for that and it works perfectly.

No problem with the questions, oVirt tries to solve a complex problem
and sometimes its easy to forget that one had the same problems a whole
while back :-)

I think correct link is what I referred in my first answer and that I
used:

http://www.ovirt.org/Feature/GuestAgentUbuntu

In that page we have the timestamp and tested version of
*Name*: oVirt Guest Agent on Ubuntu
*Modules*: ovirt-guest-agent

That is valid also for 3.5rc3 and ubuntu 14.04

This looks a little bit like an APT repository (it has Packages and
Release) but I don't see the structure I expect (e.g. a dists directory).
This is just the way how OBS is doing this, so I have no influence on
the 'dists' directory in this case the dist name is just a slash ('/')
What is the appropriate APT line e.g. for sources.list? What is the
uri, suite, and component? I'm able to fetch the .deb and install it
manually (and then fix the missing dependencies) but a properly
configured APT repository would make this more seamless.
How to add it to the sources.list is shown here:
http://www.ovirt.org/Feature/GuestAgentUbuntu#Installation
The URL to use can be found here:
http://www.ovirt.org/Feature/GuestAgentUbuntu#Repository

Yes it's painful to use local storage, that's true, but will
eventually change with 3.6 or something.

Second pain point is adding additional networks aside from the
initial management network doesn't seem to be very intuitive. I'm a
network engineer for a living...and I can't figure it out.

Well I'm sure I can assist with that one even if I'm no network
engineer ;)

Third pain point is ovirt management UI requires a restart semi
 frequently due to crashing.

You should submit bugs for crashes, I have never seen a UI crash
in ovirt, not even in 3.2. Which version are you using and what are
you doing when it crashes?

I added the network under the networks tab, but I noticed it
doesn't ask any interface questions (ok, it could technically
attempt arp on all interfaces like a citrix netscaler).

Well, the UI is a little cluttered, so I have to ask:
Which network tab?
You define a logical network on a datacenter level
you then have to add this to the logical cluster in this datacenter.
It should get added by default to the logical cluster in fact, and
it should be marked as required (which is a bad default, I have a BZ
tracking this).
You need then to manually add this logical network to your host.
You can further adjust your networking by adding network profiles.

In short: the whole network management takes place in ovirt!
You do _not_ need to configure anything on the compute node/host
yourself. You can do bonding, bridging, v-lans, port mirroring, qos
and so on.

I notice theres no ifconfig changes on the host.
There will not be any if you didn't apply any logical networks to the
host in the first place. Furthermore it's important to know your ovirt
version because there was a change in recent vdsm versions regarding
the path where network configuration is stored. (I don't recall that
path out of my head but others may provide the info here)
I also notice that the other interface has a bridge named exactly
as the management name in the UI; ovirtmgmt, which is bridged to
eth0. OK, so I create a bridge called utility (my network name) and
mapped it to a vlan tagged interface I had setup on eth1.21.
Everything looks identical to how ovirt setup the initial network.
The interface itself works, I can see things on the network etc.
 Traffic passes.

I guess you tried to define the network yourself on the host?
First wrong step :) jut add your logical networks to the host, either
through UI or via API.

Here are some docs you should read:

http://www.ovirt.org/OVirt_Administration_Guide#Hosts_and_Networking
http://www.ovirt.org/OVirt_Administration_Guide#Logical_Networks

Trying to run the VM results in errors because its failing network
filters, says it doesn't exist etc. All I want to do, is create a
VM with some memory, some disk, with a nic on a network, across
individual machines. My PXE provisioning will take over from there.

The exact message I get is:

 Error while executing action: utiltest:

 - Cannot run VM. There are no available running Hosts with all the
networks used by the VM. - Cannot run VM. There is no host that
satisfies current scheduling constraints. See below for details: -

 Network

Of course, you did not attach the logical network you defined for your
datacenter to your host (compute node) through ovirt.

This means that there is mismatch between the host name that you use and
the name contained in the certificate used by the engine web server.
This check is a typical security measure to avoid man in the middle
attacks when using SSL. I'd suggest you check the certificate of used by
the web server. In my environment, for example:

  # grep '^SSLCertificateFile' /etc/httpd/conf.d/ssl.conf
  SSLCertificateFile /etc/pki/ovirt-engine/certs/apache.cer

  # openssl x509 -in /etc/pki/ovirt-engine/certs/apache.cer -subject
-noout
  subject= /C=US/O=Example Inc./CN=ovirt.example.com

The relevant part here is the CN, it should match the name that you put
in the url parameter of the ovirt-shell.

If for whatever the reason you still want to connect using an incorrect
host name you can do so setting the insecure parameter to True.

 My config file:
 [cli]
 autoconnect = True
 autopage = True
 [ovirt-shell]
 username = admin
 timeout = 5

[ovirt-users] Getting Started with oVirt

2014-10-03 Thread Saloni Baweja
I am an aspirant for OPW and found oVirt interesting. But, I don't
know much about virtualized networks, storage etc and am just a
beginner. It would be great if I get guidance about how to start
understanding about oVirt, what exactly is oVirt. How can I get
acquainted with oVirt and understand its code, working ( as a mere
beginner ) so that I can start contributing towards this ?

Re: [ovirt-users] Are there Life/support time for the given ovirt branch

Hi, Where can I find some lifetime information for the ovirt 3.4.x
  branch?

Hi, well there is the release process, basically:

every 6 months a new point release (3.5 now, 3.6 will be next)
 see: http://www.ovirt.org/Release_Process

ovirt does support the last release before the actual
release, but this rule somehow does already got broken:

 the current release is 3.4.4

the next release will be 3.5 (RC4 just released)

but even with 3.5 not released there will be no
updates for 3.3.z (3.3.5 being the last release)
and there will be _only_ security updates for 3.4.z.

There is no planned 3.4.5 release if no security
 issues will be found.

IMHO the process is somewhat broken here, because
the support for 3.3.z is already abandoned with
3.5 not being released yet (there where some delays
in 3.5 release process, due to bugs).

This might be due to the fast development cycle atm:

 3.2 was GA at 14.02.2013
 3.3 was GA at 12.09.2013
 3.4 was GA at 27.03.2014

so as you can see 3.5. is already
 a bit delayed.

you can find the 3.6 release plan (not yet feature complete)
 here:

[ovirt-users] [New Documentation] oVirt User Guide (Please Review!)

2014-10-03 Thread Brian Proffitt
I would like to announce the posting of a new page on the oVirt site: the oVirt
User Guide[1].

I know what you're thinking: didn't we just release the oVirt Administration
Guide? Why, indeed we did[2]! But this was a shorter document, and so did not
take as long to convert.

This guide, adapted to MediaWiki form with the help of Red Hat's Content
Services team, should be up to date as of oVirt 3.4. But, it is a living
document and, like the Administration Guide, it needs further review! I ask
everyone to take start poking at this documentation once oVirt 3.5 is released
and people get familiar with the new release, so as to identify procedures that
have changed, and new features that must be added.

Please use Bugzilla to assign bugs in these document to me, or, if you have
wiki privileges, edit as needed.

Up next: a revised Quick Start Guide to get people launched into oVirt as fast
as possible.

[2] http://www.ovirt.org/OVirt_Administration_Guide

Peace,
Brian

[ovirt-users] Add additional iSCSI path in ovirt 3.3.4

2014-10-03 Thread Thomas Scofield
I am trying to add a second path to my iSCSI LUNs but I can’t get the
changes to persist. I can get the SPM to login to the second path, and
from the server side the multipath –ll output looks good. I can then move
the SPM around to force all the other systems to login to the iSCSI LUNs.
But when I reboot a node I lose the second path. I have also been
searching through the database to see what might be missing on the backend
and I noticed that the second path is not listed in the
storage_server_connections table. I tried adding an entry for the second
path, but that did not resolve the problem. What is the proper way to add
an additional path?
