[ovirt-users] oVirt hook to manage physical CPU pool, and automatically pin CPUs without overlap on the host

2016-01-31 Thread David Jorm
Hi All

Thanks for the help that people have recently provided on this list.
I'm running into another edge case that, as far as I can see, does not
have a native solution within oVirt. I have a use case where every VM
must have 4 pinned vCPUs, and these must map 1:1 to physical CPUs so
that there are never two VMs contending for the same physical cores. I
already have code in place that ensures a VM will not be created or
started if n/4 VMs are already running on the target host, where n is
the number of physical cores. What I need now is to ensure that
pinning is managed so that each physical core maps 1:1 to vCPUs.

Would it be possible to manage the pool of physical cores in a local
DB, and implement a VDSM hook similar to the example on this page?

http://www.ovirt.org/VDSM-Hooks

Or would there be a preferable solution?

Thanks
David

Re: [ovirt-users] VDI non-persistant desktops

2016-01-31 Thread Colin Coe
Hi and thanks for the reply.

Not really what we're after. We want the stateless VMs but we want to be
able to work on the template (patch, install addtional software, etc) and
have those changes flow through to the existing VMs based on these
templates. In addition, when the VMs are refreshed based on the updated
template, we need the MAC addresses to persist (as we define all our leases
in DHCP).

Thanks

[ovirt-users] Disk copies

2016-01-31 Thread Pavel Gashev
Hello

I just tried to attach a copy of a disk (made for backup purposes) to a VM.
Everything works well except live snapshot deletion doesn't work anymore. The
issue is that the disk has voltype=SHARED, instead of LEAF. Live snapshot
merging doesn't work on shared disks.

Could someone clarify, why does disk copying make disks shared? Is it a bug, or
there is a hidden reason for that?

Thanks

[ovirt-users] Trunk vnic and simulated ipmi ?

2016-01-31 Thread Dan Lavu
I've been looking around and trying to find a way to test hypervisors
technologies on to of oVirt, in the most realistic way possible.
Primarily openstack, so I was wondering if there was a way to trunk a
virtual interface so i can run nested guests on different VLANs?

Secondly, does anybody have any experience with simulating IPMI? so
fencing guests is possible using IPMI? I know there is a rhevm fence
agent as an alternative.

Thanks.

AFAIK the hypervisor does not implement IPMI
However, you can track this open BZ [1] on libvirt

Re: [ovirt-users] Disk copies

2016-01-31 Thread Pavel Gashev
iSCSI and NFS, so it looks like my case doesn't depend on storage type.

vdsm.log:
jsonrpc.Executor/2::ERROR::2016-01-31
12:27:52,267::vm::4820::virt.vm::(merge) vmId=`3f560d63-3221-47e4-9786
-bb6cdca8f39c`::Refusing to merge into a shared volume

# vdsClient -s localhost getVolumeInfo 75801b3b-d9ce-4b62-aa36
-6b6519ecc04e 0002-0002-0002-0002-02db e4fae648-4fea-4f86
-9f24-48894039b8dc e04e1db9-c076-4d2d-8388-311d0d4069e8 | grep voltype
voltype = SHARED

In my case VDSM even doesn't start live snapshot merging. And if
manually change voltype of my disk on iSCSI from SHARED to LEAF, then
it goes further and hit the bug 1302215. On NFS everything works well
after the hack.

Hi Christoph,

Please send me also the output of the following-

On the host (The problematic host is - 'lxedna.voipfuture.com', right?)-
1. vdsClient -s 0 getVdsCapabilities
2. vdsClient -s 0 hostdevListByCaps

On the DB-
1. select * from vds_interface where
vds_id='b3b01963-caf8-4f01-bfcc-57e6d33e7dc4';
2. select * from host_device where
host_id='b3b01963-caf8-4f01-bfcc-57e6d33e7dc4';
3. select * from host_nic_vfs_config;

Thanks,

Hi Alona,

here are my answers.

1. no, but I did that just now and it does not change the behavior.
2. the host is up
3. it is in the attachment

Hi Christoph,

I have some questions/requests-

1. After the reboot and the rewiring you did- did you press manually on the
Host's 'Refresh Capabilities' button (it is part of the Host's actions in
the host's main tab)?
If not, please do it and let me know if after doing it you manage to open
the 'setup networks' dialog or still get the same error.
2. What is the status of your host? Up/Maintenance/some thing else?
3. Please attach the full log of your engine.

Thanks,
Alona.

ok, thanks. Just o inform you — so far it seems there is inconsistency in
assumptions of what can be nullable and what can not. We just need to
decide
which approach is correct and fix rest.

Hi List,

I update my OVirt 3.6.1 installation to 3.6.2 this morning.
After the reboot of the server the interface numbering wasn't the same
so I had to change some cable to have them connected to the right
configuration.

Everything looks OK but I receive a null pointer exception while
clicking on "Setup Host Networks" of my engine/host server.

Any help is more then welcome!!

Best regards
Christoph
