[Users] Management DB-Backup

2013-10-24 Thread Sven Kieske
Hi,

just a short question:

is this procedure still valid for a full DB-Backup and Restore?

http://www.ovirt.org/Backup_engine_db

I already figured out that it's tailored just for fedora setups, not
el6 (systemctl).

 engine-backup.sh --mode=backup does not check/stop the engine/jboss and
 does not alert the user.

 Should it?

No

I have zero knowledge regarding the way the engine works with the database.
Are we completely certain that any logical transaction is translated
one-to-one to a single database transaction? If so, in principle we can
back it up without taking the engine down. IMHO...

I see no reason to force engine down in backup , only in restore when we are
stopping the existing database and creating a new clean one , so we have to
verify that engine does not lock some objects

Anyway, we should definitely pick up one of the existing relevant wiki
pages, update it, and add a link to it from all the others.

Re: [Users] Management DB-Backup

2013-10-24 Thread Yedidyah Bar David
Hi Sven, all,

In 3.3 there is a new utility called engine-backup.

Documentation is currently somewhat lacking.

'engine-backup --help' will tell you its options.

As Eli implied below, there is no need to take down the engine/jboss
services while backing up.

Restore should be done to an empty database.

Some improvements for it were merged in recently, some of them will
be included in 3.3.1.

Yey! :)
Yes, mount -oremount,rw make's the FS temporarily writeable. But you
will have issues as soon as you reboot.
We'll need to investigate which paths need to be persisted (so the data
written to them survives a reboot) and which only need to be write-able
e.g. for temporary data.

Would you mind opening a bug for this?

Greetings

Then I created volume (replication), added two bricks (oVirt nodes),
and started volume. Seems fine. I checkd on node1:

BUT... Now i can not create storage domain. When I hit OK button on

Do you guys have any idea? I only found one earlier posting regarding this

 Hi,

I have a problem installing ovirt nodes the ovirt version is 3.3
Whenever I try to install a node I get the following error (more log output
 at
 the end of the mail):

 Cannot create tarball '/var/cache/ovirt-engine/ovirt-ho

Do you guys have any idea? I only found one earlier posting regarding this
problem but that didn't help. I have tar and javatar and the engine-host-
deploy packages on both engine and node (I don't think I need the deploy
 package on the engine)

Actually I think you do. Can you please try installing it? Thanks.

[Users] Cant remove image - Illegal Disk

2013-10-24 Thread Andrew Lau
Hi,

There were a few posts earlier about this but none seemed to end in a
resolution. When a VM is destroyed the disks don't get deleted by oVirt and
are left in an illegal state. Manual intervention is required to delete
the image and remove it from the database.

This has only happened recently, but I'm not sure what broke it. I assume
it's the engine which handles the deletion of the disks. Here's a snippet
of the log, where 78605656-f77c-4b72-843b-1 is the image id

Well, it is working now. I had the ovirt-host-deploy packages installed but I
found some ovirt packages on the engine in a wrong version. After upgrading
and reinstalling the ovirt-host-deploy-* packages this works now.
Thx for the quick hint ;)

   Hi,

I think I found a spelling bug in:
   http://gerrit.ovirt.org/gitweb?p=vdsm.git;a=blob_plain;f=vdsm_hooks/qos/before_vm_start.py;hb=refs/tags/v4.13.0

there are two occasions where peak is written as peek.

   Lines: 30, 35

Thanks for this report. Since the fix is so easy, I am not sure that a
 new BZ entry is needed.

Please note that as of ovirt-3.3, QoS is controllable my the main stream
(with NIC profiles) so the hook may not be necessary any longer.

 Nonetheless, would you review/verify

 http://gerrit.ovirt.org/20495

 Regrads
 Dan.

Dan,
Is there a way to deprecate this starting 3.3.2 as we have an integrated
solution?

Re: [Users] [BUG] vdsm-hooks-qos

2013-10-24 Thread Sven Kieske
Hi,

thanks for the quick fix!

The code looks good, I still have no gerrit account, maybe I should
create one (where and how?)

I'm aware of the 3.3 features, but we still stick with 3.2.3 here.

I hope we can give 3.3. another try when 3.3.1. is out, hopefully stable
enough!

PS: How do you get write access to the wiki?

Because the hook documentation is somewhat incomplete, and I could maybe
improve it already.

I also found no docs on how vdsm creates network devices for the vm in
libvirt (routed, switched, nat or forward mode etc.). Is there something
available I am not aware of? Maybe I just looked in the wrong
directions.

[Users] Docker -- self-sufficient application containers

2013-10-24 Thread Greg Sheremeta
I haven't looked into this very much, but it sounds promising. Anyone on list
familiar with it?

http://www.docker.io/ Docker is an open-source project to easily create
lightweight, portable, self-sufficient containers from any application. The
same container that a developer builds and tests on a laptop can run at scale,
in production, on VMs, bare metal, OpenStack clusters, public clouds and more.

I wonder if there's interest in shipping oVirt docker containers.
