Re: [Users] Problem with DWH installation

2013-11-05 Thread Michael Wagenknecht

Hi Alex,
I can't find ovirt-engine-dwh-3.3 in the ovirt-release-el6 repo.
Can I only install it from the git tree?

Michael

Hi Michael

The dwh version you are trying to install is unfortunately no longer compatible
with ovirt-engine-3.3. You will need ovirt-engine-dwh-3.3 for it to work.

Alex.

No problem, but maybe this work should go into fedora and not ovirt...
But first, let's have something working.

Yes.

Apparently, somehow I had corrupted the template file in question by
copying over it when restoring a vdisk file because the template file is
hard linked in the vdisk dir.

Thanks!

Hmmm, I think this explains the initial problem I saw, after doing setup;

The first setup will bump up the shmmax.
The cleanup will remove ovirt-engine.conf. However if you don't reboot, shmmax

The second setup will detect that shmmax is fine, and not create

A subsequent reboot will revert shmmax to the default value, and postgresql

This should be worth a Redhat Bugzilla entry. From my experience
the developers of this "free" project take care about that. Nevertheless
the first setup process still needs a lot of shaping. Additionally it
is always a good idea to convince new users with smooth running
installers. Especially when they expect a virtualization solution to
be a stress-free layer.

Best regards.

This boils down to "Current runtime state" != "Current configuration",
but you are basing configuration decisions on the runtime state. These
situations are always thorny to deal with.

Well, yes it should.
The point here is that having the host running the engine also as hypervisor
should be done during setup using the all-in-one plugin.
Adding the host to the engine later is not a supported path yet, due to Bug
995362.

Did you add the host from web interface instead of using all in one plugin?
ovirt engine is not able to handle firewalld, see
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=995362
Bug 995362 - [RFE] Support firewalld.

Yes - web interface.

Ok, that explain how it happened.
As workaround as you already discovered, you can just disable firewalld.
I'm sorry for the inconvenient

Thanks for the explanation. My understanding from the docs is that the
all-in-one plugin is unsupported/experimental, so my presumption was
that the default options to engine-setup would be tuned to a working
configuration in an environment without it.

I do however understand an argument that defaults are for naive users
and should lead to a simple, working POC configuration, which is the
current situation.

the file created by engine-setup is /etc/sysctl.d/ovirt-engine.conf.
Note that the file is created by engine-setup only if shmmax is < 35554432 when

Re: [Users] Proposal for a fresh look and feel for Ovirt

2013-11-05 Thread David Jaša
Hi Malini,

I hope my feedback is not too late. There is a big thumb up on the design,
while the current design certainly is not bad, this is way better!

I'd like to hear though if some of current deficiencies are addressed:

1) how does design cope with increased tab/button width (by ui plugins) or
reduced viewport width? Current way is overflow with hidden elements or
artifacts - not cool

2) at what minimum font size will the design break?

Well, yes it should.
The point here is that having the host running the engine also as hypervisor
should be done during setup using the all-in-one plugin.
Adding the host to the engine later is not a supported path yet, due to Bug
995362.

Ok, that explain how it happened.
As workaround as you already discovered, you can just disable firewalld.
I'm sorry for the inconvenient

Although iptables was disabled on engine, firewalld was not. Once I disabled
firewalld, nfsv3 mounts worked fine, and ISO_DOMAIN was able to attach.

Is the admin expected to take care of this, or is engine-setup supposed to
disable firewalld?

While running engine-setup it asks you if you want to configure firewalld if
present.
If you say no it asks you if you want to configure iptables if present.
If you say no you'll need to take care of configuring it manually.
If iptables has been choosen to be configured, firewalld is disabled if present.

I simply took the defaults to all questions, which presumably should
lead to a working configuration. Does it not?

Did you add the host from web interface instead of using all in one plugin?
ovirt engine is not able to handle firewalld, see
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=995362
Bug 995362 - [RFE] Support firewalld.

Yes - web interface.

Hi,

I'm setting up Engine for the 2nd time - the first time I answered a
configuration question wrong. So I did:

engine-setup
engine-cleanup
engine-setup

Things worked, until I rebooted the system. I found that postgresql would not
startup, and was failing with "could not create shared memory segment:
Invalid Argument".

I resolved this issue by creating a file /etc/sysctl.d/10-shmmax.conf,
containing the line:
kernel.shmmax = 10

(I read somewhere that postgresql recommends setting shmmax to 1/4 of physical
memory, and I have 4GB)

1. Is this a known bug? If not, should I file one? If so, how do I do that? :)

Which version are you installing?

3.3, on Fedora 19.

Can you please attach all 3 logs from above sequence (setup, cleanup, setup)?
I think something may have gone wrong on second setup execution while setting
shmmax.

Unfortunately I no longer have those logs.

*However* last night I powered down my node and engine. Last night engine would
at least come up.

Now when I boot up my engine I get the same error. So my guess is that the
shmmax setting isn't being configured in a persistent fashion somehow, or
is somehow reverting.

My most recent setup log is here (I hate to send large logs to lists):
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/35965416/ovirt-engine-setup-20131103141618.log

2013-11-03 14:18:18 DEBUG otopi.plugins.ovirt_engine_setup.system.sysctl
plugin.execute:441 execute-output: ('/sbin/sysctl', '-n', 'kernel.shmmax')
stdout:
35554432

setup detected that your shmmax is already configured with a good value so it
didn't change the configuration.
If you set above value before running setup, please retry running setup without
setting it or setting it to a value less than 35554432.
setup will detect it's too low and will create needed configuration files for
fixing it.

Except that when the system booted postgresql failed to come up because
it failed to allocate the shm segment it wanted, and when I checked
/proc/sys/kernel/shmmax the value was much lower than that. I have again
set the value in syscfg and things are working now.

So my guess is that something is reverting the value after engine-setup
has set it, or else somehow it was not set in a persistent fashion by
engine-setup. Where is the shmmax value stored by engine-setup? Should
there be a file in /etc/syscfg.d? There was not.

[Users] Committing a snapshot that is in preview mode

2013-11-05 Thread Rob Abshear
We had an issue with a VM where someone made a configuration change and
broke something. So I brought up a previous snapshot in preview mode
and made a few changes to it and got the broken piece back up. Now I
want to make the snapshot with the changes into the actual running VM.
I am tempted to "commit" the snapshot, but will that commit the snapshot
along with the changes made to it? Or should I commit the "Current"
snapshot? I just want to be sure before I do this. To be clear, I want
to keep the current state of the machine as the end result of this action.

What's your `lsmod | grep kvm` ?
If empty, does `modprobe kvm_intel` trigger tail-telling lines on

Perhaps it was libvirtd, and in your new setup it's not started automatically
on boot?

right. something was loading that module automatically before reinstall and now
I needed to create a conf file for having it loaded.

This is good, but AFAIK this module is not what provides /dev/kvm.
Depending on the processor you're using, try checking 'kvm_intel' or
'kvm_amd'. Also make sure both are loaded.

I've found kvm_intel module not loaded.
I've created a new conf file for loading it automatically at boot so I've
solved on my system.
However, what has been changed for not having it loaded automatically as it was
done before?

But now I'm experiencing the same problem with other VM's. A DB VM was
in single user mode when it was powered off. I created snapshot to clone
it. Powered the CentOS 6 VM back on and it cannot execute the mount
command on boot and dropped me to a root maintenance prompt.

Running fsck comes back with way too many errors, many of them about
files that shouldnt have even been open. Countless Innode issues and
clone multiply-claimed blocks. Running fsck -y seems to fix the file
system and it comes back as clean but upon restart, the VM load the
files system as read only and trying to remount it as rw, the mount
command throws a segmentation fault.

I dont know if its the new version of ovirt engine. I'm afraid to
shutdown any VM using the ovirt UI as they dont always come backup. I
have tried repairing the file system with the live CD and such to no
avail. Given the fact the alot of the corrupt files are plain static
html, or archived tar files, I assume it has something to do with ovirt.
The only corrupting for data should be and live application data (open
files).

Please advise on how to proceed. I can provide whatever logs you may
requires.

Anyone would like to step in for packaging virtio-win so we can add it to ovirt
repository?
So we can add it as dependency and have ISO_DOMAIN populated.

In the QuickStart Guide, it implies that you should find a virtual
floppy image for virtio-win in the ISO_DOMAIN. Or at least I can find no
information on where to find/populate that image before the Guide shows
its use.

However, in my default 3.3 installation, there was nothing pre-populated
in my ISO_DOMAIN. Should there have been?

I've never seen that happen on any of my installs.

You can grab the drivers at
http://alt.fedoraproject.org/pub/alt/virtio-win/latest/images/

I think would be great if anyone is willing to send some patches to
pre-populate the iso domain with this package.

[Users] Host local_host running without virtualization hardware acceleration

2013-11-05 Thread Sandro Bonazzola
Hi,
I had to reinstall ovirt yesterday and now it seems that it doesn't work
anymore.
I'm running nightly on Fedora 18.
 kernel-3.11.4-101.fc18.x86_64
 sanlock-2.8-1.fc18.x86_64
 libvirt-1.1.4-1.fc18.x86_64
 qemu-1.5.1-1.fc18.x86_64
 vdsm-4.13.0-93.gitea8c8f0.fc18.x86_64
 ovirt-engine-3.4.0-0.2.master.20131104192919.git3b65870.fc18.noarch

engine-setup with all-in-one detects hardware virtualization and allow me to
configure the system.
(it fails detecting engine health status due probably to recent changes in its
URL, I'm already looking into it)

Once added localhost to the engine, it has been moved to non operational mode
saying
I don't have virtualization hardware acceleration anymore.

I've found that:

# modinfo kvm
filename: /lib/modules/3.11.4-101.fc18.x86_64/kernel/arch/x86/kvm/kvm.ko
license:GPL
author: Qumranet
depends:
intree: Y
vermagic: 3.11.4-101.fc18.x86_64 SMP mod_unload
parm: min_timer_period_us:uint
parm: ignore_msrs:bool
parm: tsc_tolerance_ppm:uint
parm: allow_unsafe_assigned_interrupts:Enable device assignment on
platforms without interrupt remapping support. (bool)

# /usr/bin/qemu-kvm
Could not access KVM kernel module: No such file or directory
failed to initialize KVM: No such file or directory

looking at strace:
open("/dev/kvm", O_RDWR|O_CLOEXEC) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory)

Any clue on what may be happened?
