Subject: [ovirt-users] Question about power user and public template

 Hi,

Currently I have run into a problem about permissions when creating vm from
 template.

Say if non admin user A in power user portal want to create vm from template
C created by non admin user B, I found out that A need to have both power
user role and userbasedtemplatevm role to make it work. If i only assign
userbasedtemplatevm to C, A can only view the template in power user portal
but not able to create vm from it.

I'd say the problem is that the template has some disks and as a
UserTemplateBasedVm only you are
not allowed to Access Image Storage Domains?

For details about specific roles and what can be done by which role you can
have a look at:
webadmin - Configure in top right corner - Roles side tab - pick a
specific role - Edit button

So is this the expected behavior? I don't quite understand what
userbasedtemplatevm is used for. I noticed that making template C public
have the effect of assign userbasedtemplatevm to everyone, but that seems
not enough to let everyone use it.

 My engine version is 3.3.4.

Any ideas? thanks for any help!

[ovirt-users] hosted engine health check issues

2014-04-14 Thread René Koch

Hi,

I have some issues with hosted engine status.

oVirt hosts think that hosted engine is down because it seems that hosts
can't write to hosted-engine.lockspace due to glusterfs issues (or at
least I think so).

Here's the output of vm-status:

# hosted-engine --vm-status

--== Host 1 status ==--

Status up-to-date : False
Hostname : 10.0.200.102
Host ID: 1

state=EngineUp

--== Host 2 status ==--

Status up-to-date : True
Hostname : 10.0.200.101

Engine status : {'reason': 'vm not running on this
host', 'health': 'bad', 'vm': 'down', 'detail': 'unknown'}

oVirt engine is sending me 2 emails every 10 minutes with the following
subjects:

- ovirt-hosted-engine state transition EngineDown-EngineStart
- ovirt-hosted-engine state transition EngineStart-EngineUp

In oVirt webadmin I can see the following message:
VM HostedEngine is down. Exit message: internal error Failed to acquire
lock: error -243.

These messages are really annoying as oVirt isn't doing anything with
hosted engine - I have an uptime of 9 days in my engine vm.

So my questions are now:
Is it intended to send out these messages and detect that ovirt engine
is down (which is false anyway), but not to restart the vm?

How can I disable notifications? I'm planning to write a Nagios plugin
which parses the output of hosted-engine --vm-status and only Nagios
should notify me, not hosted-engine script.

Is is possible or planned to make the whole ha feature optional? I
really really really hate cluster software as it causes more troubles
then standalone machines and in my case the hosted-engine ha feature
really causes troubles (and I didn't had a hardware or network outage
yet only issues with hosted-engine ha agent). I don't need any ha
feature for hosted engine. I just want to run engine virtualized on
oVirt and if engine vm fails (e.g. because of issues with a host) I'll
restart it on another node.

Thanks,
René

[ovirt-users] Bugzilla to migrate from f19 to f20 and newer release of oVirt possible?

2014-04-14 Thread Gianluca Cecchi
Hello,
are there any plans to make something similar to this one that was for
f18 -- f19 and ovirt 3.2 -- 3.3
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1009335
More in general, are there right now particular bugzilla opened and
addressed to enable f20? Or particular blockers that I don't see in
general (perhaps JBoss version?)
Or do we have to retain that for the future only RHEL/CentOS OS will
be addressed (together with the node isos)?

Sure: Bug 1060198 - [RFE] add support for Fedora 20

Or do we have to retain that for the future only RHEL/CentOS OS will

Fedora 20 is quite different from Fedora 19. I guess that once we'll be able to
support it as clean install the safest path will be backup / export
from F19; clean F20 install, restore / import into F20.

Disabling authentication is very bad practice, but if you really need to
you can use the web server configuration to automatically add the
required Authorization header:

1. Compute the basic authentication token from your user name and
password. For example, if your password if your user is admin@internal
and your possword is abcdefg:

# echo -n admin@internal:abcdefg | base64
YWRtaW5AaW50ZXJuYWw6YWJjZGVmZw==

2. Use the mod_headers module to append the authorization header to all
the requests directed to the RESTAPI, creating a file
disable-restapi-auth.conf in the /etc/httpd/conf.d directory, with the
following content:

Location /ovirt-engine/api
  RequestHeader set Authorization Basic YWRtaW5AaW50ZXJuYWw6YWJjZGVmZw==
/Location

Make sure that this file is readable only by root, as it contains your
password:

# chmod u=r,g=,o= /etc/httpd/conf.d/disable-restapi-auth.conf

3. Restart the web server:

# service httpd restart

To make this a little bit more secure I would suggest to allow this
unauthenticated access available only to certain client IP addresses.
For example:

Location /ovirt-engine/api
  SetEnvIf Remote_Addr 192\.168\.122\.1 Disable_Auth
  RequestHeader set Authorization Basic
YWRtaW5AaW50ZXJuYWw6cmVkaGF0MTIz env=Disable_Auth
/Location

As I said this is a very bad setting from a security point of view, so
remember to revert it as soon as the broker developers fix the error.

Well, in hosted-engine setup we don't ask for additional options because we

We just ask for nfs3 or nfs4 because we pass that value as protocol version to
VDSM connectStorageServer verb.
The above change affects only the temporary mount done for validating the

Hi,

I configured Network QoS in my oVirt 3.4 setup, but can't start vms.

yes, storage info are stored in /etc/ovirt-hosted-engine/hosted-engine.conf.
By the way, if you want to propagate the info on new hypervisors when you run
deploy on them, you should also update the answer file in
/etc/ovirt-hosted-engine/answers.conf so it will be configured automatically in
newly installed hypervisors

[ovirt-users] minimum DNS requirements for /etc/hosts

reverse DNS against the engine as well, not just ssh. Seems like the

[ovirt-users] does SPM can run over ovirt-engine host ?

2014-04-14 Thread Tamer Lima
Hello,

When I create virtual machine from a template (centos6.5, 2 cores, 8GB mem,
500GB hd) this process takes almost 2 hours. I click on New VM button
and just select the template and click ok.

engine.log show me high network consumption (98%) between engine-server
host and SPM host.

I tried to make my engine-server host a spm host too, but without sucess.

Does SPM can run over on the same ovirt-engine machine ?

Am I make something wrong? Or create VM from template is really slow ?

my servers :
srv-0202 = ovirt-engine , vdsm
srv-0203 = spm , vdsm
srv-0204 = vdsm
These servers are dell blades connected on a 100GB switch.

thanks

This is what I know about SPM:
http://www.ovirt.org/Storage_-_oVirt_workshop_November_2011

= Storage Pool Manager (SPM) A role assigned to one host in a data center
granting it sole authority over:

   - Creation, deletion, an dmanipulation of virtula disk images, snapshots
   and templates
  - Templates: you can create on VM as a golden image and provision to
  multiple VMs (QCOW layers)
   - Allocation of storage for sparse block devices (on SAN)
  - Thin provisinoing (see below)
   - Single metadata writer:
  - SPM lease mechanism (Chockler and Malkhi 2004, Light-Weight Leases
  for Storage-Cnntric Coordination)
  - Storage-centric mailbox
   - This role can be migrated to any host in data center

Hi Juan,

Thank you. It’s working now and I can continue to testing the broker. I’ll
revert it as soon as possible.

 Hi,

I’m testing a connection broker that uses oVirt's API. At the moment, the
connection broker doesn’t work because it doesn’t send the basic
authentication to oVirt's API. I contacted the developers and they're
investigating the error. While they solve the error, I would like to
continue testing the connection broker. Is there any way to disable auth
 basic in oVirt's API?

I’m using it in a testing environment (oVirt 3.4 at CentOS 6), so I’m not
 worried about security risks.

 Thank you.

 Regards,

Disabling authentication is very bad practice, but if you really need to
you can use the web server configuration to automatically add the
 required Authorization header:

 1. Compute the basic authentication token from your user name and
password. For example, if your password if your user is admin@internal
 and your possword is abcdefg:

 # echo -n admin@internal:abcdefg | base64
 YWRtaW5AaW50ZXJuYWw6YWJjZGVmZw==

 2. Use the mod_headers module to append the authorization header to all
the requests directed to the RESTAPI, creating a file
disable-restapi-auth.conf in the /etc/httpd/conf.d directory, with the
 following content:

 Location /ovirt-engine/api
  RequestHeader set Authorization Basic YWRtaW5AaW50ZXJuYWw6YWJjZGVmZw==
 /Location

Make sure that this file is readable only by root, as it contains your
 password:

 # chmod u=r,g=,o= /etc/httpd/conf.d/disable-restapi-auth.conf

 3. Restart the web server:

 # service httpd restart

To make this a little bit more secure I would suggest to allow this
unauthenticated access available only to certain client IP addresses.
 For example:

 Location /ovirt-engine/api
  SetEnvIf Remote_Addr 192\.168\.122\.1 Disable_Auth
  RequestHeader set Authorization Basic
 YWRtaW5AaW50ZXJuYWw6cmVkaGF0MTIz env=Disable_Auth
 /Location

As I said this is a very bad setting from a security point of view, so
remember to revert it as soon as the broker developers fix the error.

2014-04-14 Thread David Smith
Wow really? You can't take work from outside your QA group despite having
confirmation of it working from a QA Professional who implemented it and is
currently using all the changes in his own lab?

If this is an absolute must, I'm sure I can arrange to give someone
external access to one of these devices, but it won't be without
*additional* significant effort on my part.

Let me know what I can do to help resolve this.

Re: [ovirt-users] [Users] hosted engine setup (NFS)

 Hi,

I installed hosted engine and faced an issue with NFS during
 installation.

First of all, I'm using GlusterFS on my storage and ovirt engine doesn't
 support GlusterFS yet, only NFS.

 But for NFS I can't use mountprotpo=tcp as hosted-engine --setup doesn't
 ask for NFS options.

So I manually edited the following file:

 /usr/share/ovirt-hosted-engine-setup/plugins/ovirt-hosted-engine-setup/storage/storage.py

 and changed opts.append('vers=3'):

  if domain_type == 'nfs3':
  fstype = 'nfs'
  opts.append('vers=3,mountproto=tcp')

My question is now: is it possible to ask for NFS options during setup or
do you think this can lead into problems? NFS via TCP worked fine for me for
one week until I rebooted the host today (did reboot tests last weeks,
too which was fine) and can't start hosted engine anymore (see other mail
thread), but I think the other issue is not NFS mountproto related.

Well, in hosted-engine setup we don't ask for additional options because
 we don't store them.
We just ask for nfs3 or nfs4 because we pass that value as protocol
 version to VDSM connectStorageServer verb.
The above change affects only the temporary mount done for validating the
 domain.

Thanks a lot for the information.

Btw, I can mount mit GlusterFS 3.4.2 NFS share now without specifying -o
mountproto=tcp. Is upd now possible or is the protocol determined
automatically now? I didn't test if hosted-engine-setup is able to mount
GlusterFS NFS shares now without hacks, too - only discovered this new
 behavior on my hosts.

Something I noticed, is you have to restart the gluster volume after
it's created to get the NFS server to come back up. It's a little
buggy...
If you check gluster volume status you'll see that before the
restart the nfs server is down. I'm not sure why though

 Slightly off-topic question:
The storage options are stored in
/etc/ovirt-hosted-engine/hosted-engine.conf, right? If I want to change the
ip address of my storage I simply put engine into global maintenance mode,
change IP in hosted-engine.conf and re-enable hsoted-engine vm again? Or are
 there more steps required?

 René

Subject: [ovirt-users] does SPM can run over ovirt-engine host ?
