Subject: [ovirt-users] How to disconnect hosted-engine NFS storage pool?

I want to unmounted the hosted-engine NFS share without affecting all
the other running VMs on the host. When I shutdown the hosted-engine
and enable global maintenance, the storage pool is still mounted and I
can’t unmount it because the “sanlock” process is using it.

Is there any way to disconnect the storage pool? There is a
hosted-engine --connect-storage option but I see nothing to disconnect it.

  Thanks,

  Ryan

 Hi Ryan,
Hosted engine does not unmount the share since there may be other VMs using
 it (as a general rule).
However this may deserve some additional thoughts. Do you mind opening an RFE
 for it?

 so, first for Centos 6.5.

I made a template with steps from

After starting system created from my template it stops on set new root

 authconfig-tui, must confirm.
This may be an instruction from cloud-init to root password that it must
change password, look at /etc/cloud-init/ for the config file - there is some
entry for must_change_password...

After this cloud-init set everything ok - network, hostname,
authorized_keys, root password. To have network working, must set network in
Initial Run to eth1, not eth0. So it is good to remove ifcfg-eth0 from
 template. But works.

Bad thing is that stop on root password and authconfig-tui. I think it is
some issue with unconfigured state, not with cloud-init - but don't know.

I use a Synology (DS211j and now DS214play) at home and have my storage

I think I modified /etc/exports after creating it so that it keeps the

Re: [ovirt-users] question on VM

2014-09-23 Thread Bill Dossett
In the absence of any comment and continued testing I have found that I can
ping the host network IP that the VM is running on... and the host can ping the
VM. So it would appear that nothing is wrong with the VM... I could only ping
the host from the VM once I stopped iptables, so the firewall was stopping
that. But I still can't ping outside of the host or ping the VM from
elsewhere... and the VM continues to get an IP address from the DHCP server
without issue. I have gone back to my networks and checked them thoroughly and
can't see any issues, I have migrated the VM from one host to another and the
condition persists in that it can ping the host that it is running on and the
host can ping it (providing I turn off the firewall) numerous reboots etc and
no change. :(

I don't see any reference to glance or error 500 in the logs. My impression
is that the error 500 is between the ui and the engine... have you tried to
force-refresh the ovirt webadmin page?

You can try and use the rest-api to check if the listing is working there.

 Paul,

Short answer: your approach will not work. I mentioned the custom hooks
and engine-config/UserDefinedVMProperties for a reason. Please follow my
advice first before asking further advice.

Longer answer: your changes to the libvirt domains would apply on next
domain cold start but that will never happen because vdsm always creates
libvirt domains as transient ones so the libvirt domain will disappear
on guest OS shutdown. On next start of the same oVirt VM, vdsm will
creates a new domain XML that will be used to start a new libvirt
 transient domain.

In order to make this new libvirt domain use your desired parameters,
you have to edit the XML before it is used to start the libvirt domain
and because we humans are too slow to do that and too annoyed to do that
on every VM start, vdsm hooks mechanism was devised and a script in
before_vm_start can do that changes for you (with input variables
defined in engine-config and set in VM's custom properties).

So back to my original suggestion: do you still think that it is wise to
try method that is more complicated and less secure than the custom
 launcher method?

 Regards,

 David

   Hi,

   2) is not a file, it's a key in engine-config
   3) is a VDSM custom hook that needs to be in all the hypervisors in
  DC/Cluster

Follow vdsm custom hook documentation (I don't have a link from top

However, if you _really_ want to stick with static port
  assignments,
do
 the following:
 1) designate the port range so that it doesn't collide with
  other
ranges
in use (e.g. RHEV uses 5900-6023, so 5800-5899 could be safe)
 2) add a custom VM properties to the engine for setting of port
  and
 tls-port
 3) add a vdsm hook to before_vm_start directory on each host
  that
will
add port and tlsPort parameters to the graphics element of
libvirt
 domain xml

 Hi Paul,

This behaviour is by design. It is a bad idea to override it. A
  good
approach to your problem would be to write a launcher script
  that
would:
 1) connect to the REST API
 2) get the VM connection details
 3) get new VM ticket
 4) write this info down to a temporary .vv file [3]
 5) launch remote-viewer

Some info how to use REST API is described here [1] and .vv file
format
is documented in virt-viewer sources [2]. Please note that [1]
  is a
bit
 outdated:
 * you can use HTTP header filter: true to be able to log in as
non-admin
 * you only have to use password login once when you use
prefer: persistent-auth HTTP header and you send the cookie
  you
got
in a response to first request.

Do you mind opening an RFE
 for it?

 David

   Hi,

   2) is not a file, it's a key in engine-config
   3) is a VDSM custom hook that needs to be in all the hypervisors in

 Hi Paul,

This behaviour is by design. It is a bad idea to override it. A
  good
approach to your problem would be to write a launcher script
  that
would:
 1) connect to the REST API
 2) get the VM connection details
 3) get new VM ticket
 4) write this info down to a temporary .vv file [3]
 5) launch remote-viewer

Some info how to use REST API is described here [1] and .vv file

Could you please switch to 'Native' invocation in 'Console options' and inspect

Also, make sure you don't reload the webpage (e.g. F5) prior to connecting to

After this cloud-init set everything ok - network, hostname,

Bad thing is that stop on root password and authconfig-tui. I think it is

 Hi Daniel,

Hello Doron,

makes absolutely sense (at least for developers who need to test things
a lot ;)
From a practical point of view though it will always a bit different as
long as you do not plan major design changes with hosted-engine because
of the potential lockout problem (engine-ha and shutdown / reboot, IIRC
right now no management other then migration from within ovirt). I know
you will have engine more 'manageable' form oVirt itself in the future,
but for the following reasons this is not very important for me:
Since in a worst case scenario engine is crustal getting tings working
again, 'users' (at least me) would tend to use a much simpler/robust
setup for engine storage (for instance, plain nfs, gluster 'local'
cluster - one replicated brick per host, no dm-multipath ect.). As for
the storage of 'production' VMs other points tend to be more crucial
(performance, multiple pathes, easy provision and administration ...).

My point being, common sense suggests you setup engine storage different
from 'production' storage.

Hi Sahina:

Thanks for getting back to me. I took away 3 action items from the email:

Geo-replication session configuration options mockup -- we're working on
putting something together

Dashboard - what to show in the dashboard; we're working on putting
something together

Checkpoint history - what to show. Here's what I believe you should show:

 * show what you would get from the # gluster volume geo-replication
   source_volume destination_host::destination_volume config
log-file | xargs grep checkpoint command
 * show the following columns (I'll assume you don't need a mockup as
this most likely would be shown in a table)
o checkpoint name, checkpoint creation date, amount of data
transferred (indicate if delta or cumulative size), status

Please feel free to forward to oVirt users.

Thanks,
Ju

I finally had some time to review the Geo-replication proposal on
http://www.ovirt.org/Features/Gluster_Geo_Replication#User_Experience.

Will we have a tab (sibling to Volumes, Clusters, etc.) for
Replication Sessions so a user can see all Geo-Replication Sessions
in 1 place vs. looking into every volume to identify them? I see
later a question asked about it. +1 that we need a Geo-Replication
Sessions or Geo-Replication in the main tab.

This tab would be empty if there are no replication sessions.
But having a tab will all replication sessions would be useful and
could be used to start a new one.

Is there a proposal yet for what we'll show related to replication in
the dashboard?

No, no proposal yet.

For the Geo-Replication detail tab (in the Volume main tab),
Should the action be New or Create Session? Reason I ask is that
it's Create Volume vs. New Volume in the master area.

We are trying to be consistent with the verbs..and have changed to
Volume - New for creating a volume. So it should be New Session IMO

For the Create Session / New, can we use the same dialog whether it's
coming from the Geo-Replication detail tab (in the Volume main tab)
and the Geo-Replication Sessions main tab?

The only difference is that the one from the main tab would
additionally ask the source (host / IP Address + volume). For the
detail tab, instead of prompting for the source, we can show it.

Yes, it can be the same dialog. The information regarding source
volume would be prefilled if it's coming from the geo-replication sub-tab.

For the Destination (or Remote) Cluster Volumes, can the destination
volume be of a different volume type to participate in geo-replication?

Destination volume can be of a different volume type.

For the Geo-Replication Session Options, can we make the
configuration options
(https://access.redhat.com/documentation/en-US/Red_Hat_Storage/2.1/html/Administration_Guide/chap-User_Guide-Geo_Rep-Starting-Configure.html) more
usable vs. cryptic as it currently seems? Specifically, can we
showcase the defaults and provide the rest as Advanced configurations
that they can change?

We were planning to have a UI similar to the volume options. Do let us
know, if there's a better way to do this.

The Geo-Replication Session Details view -- I'm not sure what this is
telling the user other then how long the host has been up. Does this
mean that replication has been running for as long as the uptime for
those hosts? It seems to be missing Checkpoint information and
Checkpoint history information, which is important for
geo-replication consistency.

Specifically, when I think of what is typically shown in a
geo-replication session, I'd expect to see the following columns of
information:

Source Volume, Destination / Remote Volume, Status, Last Checkpoint,
Last Checkpoint Label

If different volume types can be used within the same replication
session, then we would also want to show the volume type on the
remote volume.

Session details view will also show information on files/bytes
skipped, moved etc per brick node.

Regarding checkpoint, there's currently only a checkpoint status being
shown. There's some enhancements to be done in gluster geo-rep with
regards to checkpoints

What information would need to be shown in checkpoint history?

BTW, do you know if there are plans to show volume size (total, used,
available/remaining) in the Volume master area?

Yes, we have introduced a volume capacity column in the

Hi.

I have a problem with losting connetction to Windows Active Directory.

Normaly I connect ovirt with AD like this:

engine-manage-domains add --domain=szypa.net --provider=ad --user=ovirt
--add-permissions

After period time, example when i restart ovirt, connection is lost becouse
i cannot add new user created in AD, so i thinking that i refresh conf.
connection to ad:

 engine-manage-domains edit --domain=szypa.net --provider=ad --user=ovirt
--add-permissions

and i get this error:

No KDC can be obtained for domain szypa.net

have any idea?

I read that this problem is resolved in previous ovirt version

Hey,

thanks for the answer. This definitely helped knowing somebody uses a
Syno box with ovirt.

After fiddling around for some hours I think I have this working now.
But especially the nfs and the permission parts are really really
fragile. One wrong click and everything goes to hell. And as I have
figured out this wont always happen instantaneously. But sometimes only
after a reboot. I personally cannot recommend |ynology as a Diskstore
for ovirt and don't feel too comfortable with this solution. I
personally favour a FreeBSD box with decent zfs support.

So below are the issues still remaining:

 1) The issue of internal server error still persits (rhev
manager showing issues) even after following the advice of the expert
and doing the initialization part just once(giving ip and
  hostname) after creating the vm.

 Actually this is a bug:

 https://bugzilla.redhat.com/1144005

The reason is that when you use an incorrect boot protocol we end up
storing null in the corresponding place in the database, and later we
use the value without checking it, which triggers a null pointer
exception.

The right value for the boot protocol is static, not STATIC_IP. The
STATIC_IP value is what we use in the backend and in the database, but
in the RESTAPI it is static.

To workaround this issue you can delete the VMs and create them again
 with the correct boot protocol.

If you don't want to create the VMs again you can fix the database
 manually like this:

 # su - postgres
 # psql
 postgres=# \c engine
 engine=# update vm_init set networks = replace(networks, 'bootProtocol
 : null', 'bootProtocol : STATIC_IP');

 2) Please confirm if this is the case that we can do
initialization part only once on a particular vm , then we can
reconfigure the network (ip, subnet, gateway etc)
 or not for that vm.

I'm reasonably sure that you can run initialization only once per VM,
but Shahar can confirm this better

Ok. I don't have a 2008 machine to tests, but I tested with Windows 7,
which should be quite similar. These are my suggestions:

* Take into account that Windows 2008 uses an XML format for the answers
file, and that the file name that sysprep will look for is
Unattend.xml. On the other hand the engine will always generate a file
named sysprep.inf, so you need to alter the registry settings of the
VM before creating the template. In particular you need to create a key
named UnattendFile entry under HKEY-LOCAL-MACHINE - SYSTEM -
Setup. The value should be the location of the file. For the files
generated by the engine it should be A:\sysprep.inf. With this the
sysprep support should work if you use it from the GUI.

* The guest agent is nice to have, but not required in order to use
sysprep, and it won't allow you to change the IP configuration of the
guest, only to view it.

* As far as I know sysprep doesn't allow you to configure the IP
addresses, only the machine name, so I believe you will have to use a
different mechanism, like configuring your DHCP server so that it
assigns IP addresses based on MAC addresses or host names.

* You don't need to provide the content of the sysprep file, it is
automatically generated by the engine, merging the parameters that you
pass with the static content in the templte file
/usr/share/ovirt-engine/conf/sysprep.2k8.

So, to summarize, after preparing correctly the image, you should send a
request like this (assuming that the VM is already created from the
template):

  PUT /api/vms/7dac74d2-c504-4bbd-8659-c8773a844cb3
  vm
initialization
  host_nameWIN-AS05EOADAwerwer/host_name
  domainultimatixuat.net/domain
/initialization
  /vm

Then you can start it like this:

  POST /api/vms/7dac74d2-c504-4bbd-8659-c8773a844cb3/start
  action/

And sysprep should trigger and configure the VM. Take into account that
this only works the first time you start the VM, so if you are testing
multiple times remember to remove and create it again.

To debug this, once the VM is started, go to the hypervisor where it is
running and find the qemu process:

  # ps -ef | grep -- '-name the_name_of_your_vm'

That should be a very long command line, including a -drive option
corresponding to the sysprep floppy that the engine created and added to
the VM:

  -drive
file=/var/run/vdsm/payload/27faa0ce-3e4d-4705-adf8-30d6e9fde741.a659e9a9747fe55a8eb0c7ecbc549c86.img

Copy that .img file somewhere, mount and inspect it:

  # cp
/var/run/vdsm/payload/27faa0ce-3e4d-4705-adf8-30d6e9fde741.a659e9a9747fe55a8eb0c7ecbc549c86.img
/tmp/f.img
  # mount -o loop,ro /tmp/f.img /mnt
  # find /mnt/
  /mnt/
  /mnt/sysprep.inf

Check the content of the /mnt/sysprep.inf file, it should contain your
settings.

If the content of the floppy and the sysprep.inf file are correct but
your VM is still not being configured then there is something wrong with
the preparation of the template.

2014-09-23 Thread Lior Vernia
Hi Bill,

So without firewall you can ping interfaces inside the cluster but
nothing outside? Could it be that your DHCP server is allocating
internal network addresses and you need to configure NAT?

Yours, Lior.

firewall was stopping that. But I still can’t ping outside of the host

from the DHCP server without issue. I have gone back to my networks and
checked them thoroughly and can’t see any issues, I have migrated the VM
from one host to another and the condition persists in that it can ping
the host that it is running on and the host can ping it (providing I
turn off the firewall) numerous reboots etc and no change. L

 Hi,

I am creating my first ovirt VM from a windows 2008 R2 iso.

After setting it all up, loading the drivers etc it looks fine, but it
seems like it has no network connectivity. This is odd as it is
obtaining a DHCP address and it looks like it can browse for other
windows systems on the network. But I can’t ping it, it can’t ping out
and I can’t remote desktop into it. Normally this sounds like a
firewall problem, but I disabled that immediately. It is using the
virtio driver. It is connected to the default network ovirtmgmt which
has a dhcp server on it. Ovirt-engine says the interface is up and
connected and windows thinks it is connected to an unknown network with
out internet access. I can’t ping the default gateway from the VM
console. Seems silly, but I’ve kind of run out of things to try on this
now. I am using VLAN tagging on the ovirt-engine network side of things
and it is plugged into a trunked port… but I wouldn’t think that has
anything to do with the VM itself as I am not doing anything with VLANs
on the VM itself, it is just connected to it. All the host
network/interfaces are pingable in the cluster as well.

Thanks if anyone has any ideas what I might be looking for.

[ovirt-users] Registration Now Open for the oVirt Workshop, Oct. 16!

2014-09-23 Thread Brian Proffitt

As oVirt strives to become the best open source and comprehensive data center
virtualization management suite, and its community rapidly evolves and grows,
one of the ways its vibrant community connects is through our Global Workshops.
The events are conducted solely to introduce new users and veteran oVirt admins
to new features and new techniques found in oVirt, as well as provide a forum
for our users to connect directly with the development team behind oVirt.

With that in mind, we are pleased to announce that registration is now open for
the 2014 oVirt Workshop[1]!

The 2014 oVirt workshop will be co-located with the KVM Forum[2] in Düsseldorf,
Germany[3]on October 16, 2014. This workshop is designed to encourage
collaboration in our community, lay the foundation for best practices in oVirt
use, convey end-user stories, and help answer questions about the project from
both a developer and user's perspective.

Attendees can register free-of-charge[4] to the Workshop alone, or, if
attending LinuxCon EU[5], CloudOpen Europe[6], Embedded Linux Conference[7], or
KVM Forum[8], can also add this free Workshop to their itineraries when
registering.

We look forward to seeing you there!

[ovirt-users] [ANN] oVirt 3.4.4 Release is now available

2014-09-23 Thread Sandro Bonazzola
The oVirt development team is pleased to announce the general
availability of oVirt 3.4.4 as of Sep 23th 2014. This release
solidifies oVirt as a leading KVM management application and open
source alternative to VMware vSphere.

oVirt is available now for Fedora 19 and Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.5
(or similar).

This release of oVirt includes numerous bug fixes.
See the release notes [1] for a list of the new features and bugs fixed.

The existing repository ovirt-3.4 has been updated for delivering this
release without the need of enabling any other repository, however since we
introduced package signing you need an additional step in order to get
the public keys installed on your system if you're upgrading from an older
release.
Please refer to release notes [1] for Installation / Upgrade instructions.

Please note that mirrors will need a couple of days before being synchronized.
If you want to be sure to use latest rpms and don't want to wait for the
mirrors,
you can edit /etc/yum.repos.d/ovirt-3.4.repo commenting the mirror line and
removing the comment on baseurl line.

A new oVirt Live ISO will be available too[2].

[ovirt-users] Building vdsm within Fedora

2014-09-23 Thread Dan Kenigsberg
Since Vdsm was open-sourced, it was built and deployed via
Fedora.

Recently [http://gerrit.ovirt.org/31214] vdsm introduced a spec-file
dependency onf qemu-kvm-rhev, and considered to backport it to the
ovirt-3.4 brach.

Requiring qemu-kvm-rhev, which is not part of Fedora's EPEL6 branch,
violates Fedora's standards.

So basically we have two options:

1. Revert the qemu-kvm-rhev dependency.
2. Drop vdsm from EPEL6 (or completely from Fedora); ship Vdsm only
   within the oVirt repositories.

A third option would be to have one rpm, with qemu-kvm-rhev, shipped in
ovirt, and another without it - shipped in Fedora. I find this overly
complex and confusing.

I favor option 2. The Fedora deployment platform served us well for a
long time, but now that ovirt is maturing, we no longer need it for
building vdsm. This has the added benefit of removing the need to pass
through Fedora's ghastly gateway when adding a Vdsm dependency.

Sandro, what should be done in order to build Vdsm by ovirt, occording
to the most up-to-date tag in a stable branch?

Does anybody object this? If no one does, we would stop updating Vdsm in
Fedora, and obsolete it in the future.

Regards,
Dan.

So basically we have two options:

4 options...

 1. Revert the qemu-kvm-rhev dependency.

Why did we merge a package which is not available on all supported platforms?

 2. Drop vdsm from EPEL6 (or completely from Fedora); ship Vdsm only

3. Package qemu-kvm-rhev in Fedora

This is the root cause, lets fix it.

4. Until 3 is fixed, require qemu-kvm-rhev where it exists,
   otherwise on qemu-kvm.

I favor option 2. The Fedora deployment platform served us well for a

This is the wrong direction. We want ovirt in all distributions. You suggest
to have it in no distribution :-)
