Nope in fact I followed the guide and found CTDB works quite well. I am just
trying to figure out the benefit because that would be another component to
consider in the architecture.

The article the author uses the CTDB service for VIP failover. Is it
possible/recommended to not do this, and just create a gluster volume on all
the hosts in a cluster, then create the Gluster data domain as
localhost:gluster_vol?

Theoretically, it should work - if you make sure that you have a replica 3
gluster volume spread across 3 nodes, and these 3 nodes are your compute nodes
as well - you should be fine without CTDB setup for failover and mounting as
localhost.

But I've not tried this to recommend it. Maybe if others have tried it, they
can chime in?

Btw, is there any reason you do not want to set up CTDB?

 Hi,
I've been asked to start the discussion about testing 3.6.0 nightly builds.

Once http://gerrit.ovirt.org/37384 will be merged or manually applied on the
testing host, 3.6 cluster compatibility will be enabled on the following
 distributions:

Fedora 21: no special instructions for this distribution, should work out of
 the box.
 Fedora 20: requires virt-preview repository.

Last time I used virt-preview with Fedora 20 (last ovirt test day), *nothing*
worked - live snapshot, live storage migration, vm migration, all broken!

Be careful using this repo.

you can find the .repo file[1]
in the virt-preview home[2]. AN update to ovirt-release-master rpm will
 enable the repository by default,

Did you test this before enabling it for everyone?

it will be available probably tomorrow.
RHEL / CentOS 7.1: not yet released, but once they'll be out they'll support
 3.6 cluster compatibility

 RHEL / CentOS = 7.0 won't have 3.6 cluster compatibility.

Michal, qemu-kvm-rhev is provided only for EL6 and EL7.
On Fedora, qemu-kvm provided by Fedora is used. virt-preview provided by
ovirt-release-master will enable libvirt only.

No you just need to create the network in the networks tab, then click on the
newly created network and then look at the hosts tab that appears on the bottom
of the screen. Click the unattached radio button and pick a host. then you can
click setup host networks. drag the new network to and interface and click ok.
Then you wait for the network config to be available on the host.

[ovirt-users] [QE][ACTION REQUIRED] oVirt 3.5.2 RC status

2015-02-04 Thread Sandro Bonazzola
Hi,
We're going to start composing oVirt 3.5.2 RC on *2015-02-25 08:00 UTC* from
3.5 branch.
Maintainers:
- Please be sure that 3.5 snapshot allow to create VMs before *2015-02-24 15:00
UTC*
- Please be sure that no pending patches are going to block the release before
*2015-02-24 15:00 UTC*
- If any patch must block the RC release please raise the issue as soon as
possible.

A release management entry has been added for tracking the schedule of 3.5.2 [0]

A bug tracker [1] has been created and currently has no open blockers.

There are still 43 bugs [2] targeted to 3.5.2.
Excluding node and documentation bugs we still have 35 bugs [3] targeted to
3.5.2.

Maintainers / Assignee:
- Please add the bugs to the tracker if you think that 3.5.2 should not be
released without them fixed.
- Please update the target to 3.5.3 or later for bugs that won't be in 3.5.2:
it will ease gathering the blocking bugs for next releases.
- Please fill release notes, the page has been created here [4]

Community:

[ovirt-users] [QE][ACTION REQUIRED] oVirt 3.6.0 status

2015-02-04 Thread Sandro Bonazzola
Hi, here's an update on 3.6 status on integration / rel-eng side

ACTION: Feature proposed for 3.6.0 must now be collected in the 3.6 Google doc
[1] and reviewed by maintainers.
Finished the review process, the remaining key milestones for this release will
be scheduled.

For reference, external project schedules we're tracking are:

Fedora 22: 2015-05-19
Fedora 20 End Of Life: 2015-06-19 (1 month after Fedora 22 release)
Foreman 1.8.0: 2015-03-01
GlusterFS 3.7: 2015-04-29
OpenStack Kilo: 2015-04-30
QEMU 2.3.0: 2015-03-27

The tracker bug for 3.6.0 [2] currently shows no blockers.

There are 548 bugs [3] targeted to 3.6.0.
Excluding node and documentation bugs we have 506 bugs [4] targeted to 3.6.0.

oVirt 3.6 cluster compatibility status in nightly builds:

VDSM patch introducing 3.6 compatibility[5] has not been merged yet, waiting
for CentOS and RHEL 7.1 to be released for getting libvirt support.
CentOS and RHEL 6.z won't have 3.6 compatibility by design [6].
Fedora 20 won't have 3.6 compatibility level since virt maintainers are going
to maintain latest libvirt rpms only in latest stable Fedora release
(currently Fedora 21). There's no point in providing Fedora 20 packages on
oVirt side since Fedora 20 will go EOL before oVirt 3.6.0 GA.
Fedora 21 will be able to support 3.6 compatibility once VDSM patch[5] will be
merged.
Fedora 22 may not be able to support VDSM at all since it will run Python 3
instead of Python 2 as default python interpreter[7], so more work will be
needed there.

Re: [ovirt-users] qcow2 as default disk format

2015-02-04 Thread Daniel Helgenberger
Hello,

AFAIK cow images are currently not configurable via GUI and cannot be
set as default disk format. IIRC the reason being RAW and sparse are
providing better performance (until you try to copy a larger disk image...).

However, you can add qcow - disks with ovirt shell and use these images:

$ add disk \
--vm-identifier vm_name \
--provisioned_size size_in_bytes \
--interface virtio \
--name disk_name \
--format cow \
--sparse true \
--storage_domains-storage_domain
storage_domain.name=storage_domain_name

Re: [ovirt-users] Help understanding Gluster in oVirt

2015-02-04 Thread Donny Davis
I have two nodes running the hosted engine and gluster setup for replicate
between them. Mounting to localhost seems to be working so far. I have live
migrated the engine, pulled the plug on a running node, and rebooted each
node to ensure it all works properly. I have had few issues with this setup.
I didn't like ctdb because it adds another layer of complexity that is
unnecessary for MY setup.

Node1 gluster drive on sdb

Node2 gluster drive on sdb

Both replicate and are the same make and model drive.

ovirt-ha running on both for hosted-engine

This setup is for hosted engine only, my actual storage for VM's and what
not do not run in this fashion.

Hope This helps

Theoretically, it should work - if you make sure that you have a replica 3
gluster volume spread across 3 nodes, and these 3 nodes are your compute
nodes as well - you should be fine without CTDB setup for failover and
mounting as localhost.

But I've not tried this to recommend it. Maybe if others have tried it, they
can chime in?

Btw, is there any reason you do not want to set up CTDB?

I think that should work -- the vip is important for nfs, and since the hosted
engine requires nfs, I just use the vip for the gluster mount as well.

For 3.6, I believe gluster will be an option for the hosted engine, and so
ctdb will probably not be necessary.

[ovirt-users] [Event] 2015 oVirt Asia Workshop

2015-02-04 Thread Brian Proffitt
As oVirt strives to become the best open source and comprehensive data center
virtualization management suite, and its community rapidly evolves and grows,
one of the ways its vibrant community connects is through our Global Workshops.
The events are conducted solely to introduce new users and veteran oVirt admins
to new features and new techniques found in oVirt, as well as provide a forum
for our users to connect directly with the development team behind oVirt.

With that in mind, we are pleased to announce that registration is now open for
the 2014 oVirt Workshop!

Thank you very much, it is simple when you know how to do it :)
I will try to add some vLANs and install OPNsense or pfSense (we have that in

No you just need to create the network in the networks tab, then click on
the newly created network and then look at the hosts tab that appears on the
bottom of the screen. Click the unattached radio button and pick a host.
then you can click setup host networks. drag the new network to and interface
and click ok. Then you wait for the network config to be available on the
 host.

 Hi,
I’m very impressed with oVirt, but I have one small problem. When I’d the
installation of hosted-engine I only had one NIC configured, now I want to
activate the other NIC (eno2), but according to the install instructions I
disabled the NetworkManager, and now I do not know how to activate the second
 NIC.

Do I have to reinstall everything and activate the two NICs during OS

Re: [ovirt-users] Help understanding Gluster in oVirt

2015-02-04 Thread Donny Davis
I am using ctdb for my storage only nodes and I must be doing something wrong
because I still have selinux problems without using gluster to replicate my
meta data for ctdb. They are storage only so turning off selinux doesn't bother
me quite as much.

Ctdb does work quite well for that purpose, as its a distribute only gluster.

BTW thank you for the tutorial, I was kinda lost with glusterfs before I read
it.

Yeah, in my howto I'm using the meta volume that ctdb uses for its lock

doesn't like. It's not really necessary, though, the configs could just
be copied into the default locations on each node -- I think that would

[ovirt-users] Ovirt qouta

Does anyone know if there if a way to set quotas without manually doing it for
each user.

As many of you already know I am the proprietor of cloudspin.me where I offer
IaaS for free on ipv6.

I would like to set per user quotas without having to manually do it for each
person.

In the next couple weeks I am going to make a lot more storage available to
users, and it would be nice if they could set things up how they want... One
big machine, many little machines... Etc

Any idea's

[ovirt-users] Bring down one of multiple storage domains in a data center

2015-02-04 Thread Rik Theys

Hi,

We are planning to use oVirt to manage our virtual machine
infrastructure. We would like to connect two different storage boxes to
the hosts, which I believe will result in two storage domains in the
same datacenter for oVirt?

One of the storage boxes sometimes has to be powered down during
building maintenance (electricity, cooling, ...). Will the data center
with the two storage domains attached still be considered up when one
of the storage domains is no longer available?

Is it sufficient to power down the VM's with disks on the affected
storage domain and to put the affected storage domain in maintenance?

Will oVirt keep the datacenter up and keep on managing the remaining
VM's on the other storage domain?

One of the storage domains will be a SAS-connected external storage box.
There will be two SAS connections per host to the storage box so
multipath should see the two paths. My understanding is that anything
detected by multipathd is considered FC storage by oVirt. Is that correct?

Rik

Re: [ovirt-users] importing iscsi storage domain

2015-02-04 Thread Elad Ben Aharon
If you can't see the VMs under 'VM Import' subtab under the imported storage
domain, it means that you won't be able to recover those VMs (because their
configuration files weren't uploaded to the domain).
For the next time, you can decrease the time interval of the OVFs upload as
explained below in the thread.
Regarding the upgrade, it is possible to upgrade from 3.4 to 3.5 and once
you'll upgrade the setup and the DC compatibility version to 3.5, the OVFs of
the VMs will be uploaded to the storage domains where the VMs's disks are
located on. (again, every 60 minutes by default).

No, I did not wait 60 minutes before I tried to failover. Do, I need to start
over, or can I just failback and wait the hour for the ovfs to upload? I do
have a question, is this feature possible for an environment that was upgraded
from 3.4 to 3.5? My production environment is 3.4, the 3.5 environment is a
clean test environment, but if I cant upgrade to 3.5 from 3.4 then this will
not be a good DR option for me.

Hi Steven,

In order to import the VMs from the imported storage domain, the VMs
configuration files (which are called OVFs) have to be uploaded first before
the domain is detached from the setup. This is being done by engine in a time
interval of 60 minutes (it's configurable using rhevm-config --set
OvfUpdateInMinutes=value and restart ovirt-engine service). From 3.5.1, the
OVFs are uploaded once you move the storage domain to maintenance. did you do
so in the original RHEV environment? What was the version of this environment?

If you didn't deactivate the domain in the first environment and then tried to
attach it to the DR environment, the existence of the VMs in the domain depends
on the OVFs upload that was supposed to be done by the first engine, which is
being done every 60 minutes as explained, so if you've created those VMs and
immediately destroyed the setup, those VMs probably won't be available for you
in the DR environment.

Re: [ovirt-users] importing iscsi storage domain

2015-02-04 Thread Elad Ben Aharon

Thank you for the response.

I went thru the steps 1-9, and when I get to step 10 there is no import vms or
import templates sub-tabs. I am including the vdsm.log from the host. Also,
when I do a lvs on the host, I can see the disks that reside in the imported
SD, one is 30gb and the other is 40gb. The storage domain I am importing is
called iSCSI.

I am trying to test failing over to a DR site using the storage domain import.
The DR site shows that it imported the iscsi storage domain, and activates it
in the datacenter, but none of the vm’s or anything shows up. What am I
missing.

thanks

No, I did not wait 60 minutes before I tried to failover. Do, I need to start
over, or can I just failback and wait the hour for the ovfs to upload? I do
have a question, is this feature possible for an environment that was upgraded
from 3.4 to 3.5? My production environment is 3.4, the 3.5 environment is a
clean test environment, but if I cant upgrade to 3.5 from 3.4 then this will
not be a good DR option for me.

thanks
