Not sure what needs to be configured in ESXi to let you run kvm inside it.

Can you start a normal kvm vm?

Changing the subject accordingly.

Re: [ovirt-users] Hosted-engine-setup

2015-11-19 Thread Martin Sivak
Hello,

hosted-engine has to be executed on a physical host (or a nested host
with all the proper CPU flags) that supports KVM virtualization. That
means linux kernel and the vmx flag in /proc/cpuinfo iirc.

I am also adding Sandro who is the maintainer of the setup tool as he
might have some additional insights.

Best regards

[ovirt-users] Importing gluster SD from geo-replicated volume

2015-11-19 Thread Ivan Bulatovic
Hi, I have two DC's (both initialized), two-node each, and on the first
one I have a replica 2 gluster storage domain that is geo-replicating on
a replica 2 slave volume on the second DC (managed within the same
engine). When I stop the replication (volumes are synced) and try to
import the gluster storage domain that resides on the slave, import
storage domain dialog throws a general exception.

Exception is raised when vdsm loads the list of backup servers so that
the backup-volfile-servers mount option could get populated. If I
override that in storageServer.py, so that it always return blank, or
when I manually enter this option in the import storage domain dialog,
then everything works as expected.

Maybe it's worth mentioning that I have a dedicated gluster network and
hostnames for all nodes in both DC's (node hostname, and hostname I use
for gluster on that node are different), and that all attempts to import
a storage domain were on the second DC.

Btw, setting up gluster geo-replication from oVirt was a breeze, easy
and straightforward. Importing domain based on slave gluster volume
works when gluster storage domain that resides on master volume gets
removed from the first DC. This is something that we could improve, if I
don't detach and remove original gluster sd, import storage dialog just
shows up again after a short "running circle", but it should provide a
warning that there is another storage domain already active/registered
in the engine with the same ID/name and that the domain should be
removed (or the engine can do it for us). I get this warning only when
I've already removed storage domain on a master volume from the first DC
(which doesn't make sense to me).

I can open bug reports for both issues if needed, just want to check if
the rationale behind the process is correct or not.

Unfortunately the UI is lacking in this area. We do not currently have
any overview page.

Also we do not currently support dedicated CPU to VM mapping. You can
use CPU pinning to select the CPUs that should be used, but the CPU
can be used for any other VM too (so it is a limitation for the VM
assignment, not for the CPU assignment).

There might be a workaround for this using the isolcpus
(http://www.linuxtopia.org/online_books/linux_kernel/kernel_configuration/re46.html)
kernel boot option and then puting VMs on those CPUs using pinning.
But we have never tested this.

> What happens if I allocate more cores than what I actually have?

We won't allow your VM to start if it requires more cores than
physically available on the destination host.

> If I specify say, a dual CPU system, would that system show up as 4 cores (2
> real cores and 2 hyper-threaded cores)

CPU pinning and core reporting always use thread IDs so it makes no
difference there.

But the scheduling takes this option into account when computing the
load or when checking if enough cores are available (useful with
relation to your previous question).

Would you care to open a bug about the CPU pinning overview? It might
be a nice RFE considering we have something similar for NUMA already.

In hosted-engine the engine will run as a VM so if your host is a virtual
machine too you are going to create a nested deployment. To create a nested
env you need to:
- enable nested virtualization on the external hypervisor, follow here as a
reference if you are using oVirt
http://www.ovirt.org/Vdsm_Developers#Running_Node_as_guest_-_Nested_KVM
- if you are using oVirt as your external hypervisor, disable no-mac-spoof
filter on the physical hypervisor otherwise your engine VM will no have
network connectivity at all. You can proceed following this instructions:
https://github.com/oVirt/vdsm/tree/master/vdsm_hooks/macspoof

Glad to know geo-rep setup was easy.

I can open bug reports for both issues if needed, just want to check

If you want to add bricks using the 16.0.0.0 network, from ovirt you
will need to set this up like below

1. Define a network in the cluster with "gluster" network role.
2. After you add the hosts to ovirt using the 172.16.. network, assign
the "gluster" network to the 16.0.. interface using the "Setup Networks"
dialog.
Now when you create the volume from oVirt, the 16.0 network will be used
to add the bricks.

But in your case it looks like the same host is known as 2 peers - 1hp2
and 1hp2-SAN? Did you set this up from gluster CLI?
You could try peer detaching 1hp2-SAN and peer probing it again from
another host. (1hp2-SAN should be shown as other name for 1hp2)

I've created a separate network and marked it as a gluster network on
both datacenters, but I haven't used transport.socket.bind-address
option to bind gluster to those particular interfaces. But peers were
probed via hostnames that are resolving to the address of the interfaces
that belongs to the gluster network without any aliases.

Nir mentioned this bug a few days back (that Ala's patch addresses), but
I've managed somehow not to connect the dots. I am using a host in the
cluster to connect to the volume, but the host is not a part of the
volume info even though it is the same host, just different hostname
that is pointing to a different network interface on that host.

I'll test the patch and provide feedback,

As a side effect of this bug you will not see the engine VM in the VM list.

Many thanks. It's not affecting anything as you say, just annoying. I

I'd like to see it hidden and controlled via hosted-engine solely.
Another nice thing with hosted-engine would be a migration feature. I've
noticed when I put a node into local maint, it doesn't migrate the
engine, I have to shut it down then let it restart on another node.

[ovirt-users] report option gone missing

2015-11-19 Thread Rik Theys

Hi,

At some point I had the oVirt reporting configured on my engine and it
worked. I had a "reports" option in the menu and could generate reports
for various resources.

At some point I've noticed that the "reports" option was no longer there
but did not have time to investigate. I believe it happened when I
migrated the engine host from CentOS 6 to 7 using engine-backup and restore.

How can I debug this?

In the ovirt-engine-dwh log I used to see the following error:

Exception in component tJDBCRollback_4

administrator command

But after rebooting the engine host it now only lists 'Service Started'.

The ovirt-engine-reportsd is also running.

Re: [ovirt-users] report option gone missing

2015-11-19 Thread Rik Theys

Hi,

I was able to login on the ovirt-engine-reports web application as
'admin' but don't see any reports there.

What is the procedure to fully remove the reporting from the system and
start anew? Will a remove of the package automatically clean up the
databases and such?

Can you please check the content of
C:\Users\test\AppData\Local\Temp\console-587.vv ?
Is your client able to resolve the host with the hostname used there, is
the routing between your client and the host OK?
If not you can use a proxy or override the host display name from the
engine configuring your host.

Re: [ovirt-users] several ovirt questions - CPU allocation, and use threads as CPU

Unfortunately the UI is lacking in this area. We do not currently have
any overview page.

I will submit an RFE when I get a chance.

Ok.

What happens if I allocate more cores than what I actually have?

We won't allow your VM to start if it requires more cores than
physically available on the destination host.

Actually, I think I wasn't clear with my message. If I have only 4
cores total, and I try to allocate 5 cores to one VM, I would expect the
VM wouldn't start. What I want to understand is what happens when I try
to run 3 x 4 core VMs on a 4 core system. By default, they would all
share the 4 cores? oVirt would never tell me that I am out of capacity
as long as the VMs that I'm running are all under the total number of
cores in the system?

If I specify say, a dual CPU system, would that system show up as 4 cores (2
real cores and 2 hyper-threaded cores)

CPU pinning and core reporting always use thread IDs so it makes no
difference there.

But the scheduling takes this option into account when computing the
load or when checking if enough cores are available (useful with
relation to your previous question).
You didn't mention whether I'm at an advantage to enable "Use Threads as
CPUs" or to leave it off?

Would you care to open a bug about the CPU pinning overview? It might
be a nice RFE considering we have something similar for NUMA already.

Sure!

Thanks!

Jason.
