Re: [ovirt-users] How to import a qcow2 disk into ovirt

2016-09-02 Thread Martín Follonier
Hi,

I've done all the recommendations in this thread, and I'm still getting the
"Paused by System" message just after the transfer starts.

Honestly I don't know were else to look at, cause I don't find any log
entry or packet capture that give me a hint about what is happening.

I'll appreciate any help! Thank you in advance!

Regards

Martin

[root@ractorshe bin]# systemctl stop ovirt-imageio-proxy

engine=# select * from vdc_options where option_name='ImageProxyAddress';
 option_id |option_name|  option_value   | version
---+---+-+-
   950 | ImageProxyAddress | localhost:54323 | general
(1 row)

engine=# update vdc_options set option_value='ractorshe.mydomain:54323'
where option_name='ImageProxyAddress';
UPDATE 1

   950 | ImageProxyAddress | ractorshe.mydomain:54323 | general

option_id |option_name| option_value |

(1 row)

systemctl stop ovirt-engine
(otherwise it remained localhost)

systemctl start ovirt-engine

systemctl start ovirt-imageio-proxy

Now transfer is ok.
I tried a qcow2 disck configured as 40Gb but containing about 1.6Gb of data.
I'm going to connect it to a VM and see if all is ok also from a contents
point of view.

But where is the disk? If it's across the network, then network is involved
and is certainly a bottleneck.

under Windows, but probably requires nested virtualization enabled.

[ovirt-users] How to use a OVIRT in a VIrtualbox?

2016-09-02 Thread Vitor Mazuco
Hi to everybody,

I want to use a OVIRT in a CENTOS inside a virtualbox,

but I can't use it, because the virtualbox says that is not possible
to install any hosts.

Is possible to use it?

Follow this:

Simply ignore the steps that refers to the engine VM if you are with the engine
on a physical system.

100Mbps will not get you more than several MB/s. 11MB/s on a very bright
day...

Which is not possible on the wire. Unless it's VM to VM? And the storage is
local, which means it's the bandwidth of the physical disk itself?

Re: [ovirt-users] Ovirt with bad IO performance

2016-09-02 Thread Gabriel Ozaki
Hi Nir, thanks for the answer

*The nfs server is in the host?*
Yes, i choose NFS to use as storage on ovirt host

*- Is this 2.9GiB/s or 2.9 MiB/s?*
Is MiB/s, i put the full test on paste bin
centos guest on ovirt:
http://pastebin.com/d48qfvuf

centos guest on xenserver:
http://pastebin.com/gqN3du29

how the test works:
https://www.howtoforge.com/how-to-benchmark-your-system-cpu-file-io-mysql-with-sysbench

*- Are you testing using NFS in all versions?*
i am using the v3 version

*- What is the disk format?*
partion size format
/20Gb xfs
swap 2 Gb xfs
/dados rest of disk xfs (note, this is the partition where i save the
ISOs,exports and VM disks)

*- How do you test io on the host?*
I do a clean install of centos and do the test before i install the ovirt
the test:
http://pastebin.com/7RKU7778

*- What kind of nic is used? (1G, 10G?)*
Is only a 100mbps :(

*We need much more details to understand what do you test here.*
I have problems to upload the benchmark test on orvirt to novabench site,
so here is the screenshot(i make a mistake on the last email i get the
wrong value), is 86 Mb/s:

And the novabench on xenserver:
https://novabench.com/compare.php?id=ba8dd628e4042dfc1f3d39670b164ab11061671

*- For Xenserver - detailed description of the vm and the storage
configuration?*
The host is the same(i install xenserver, do the tests before i install
centos), the VM i use the same configuration of ovirt, 2 cores, 4 Gb of ram
and 60 Gb disk(in the default xenserver SR)

*- For ovirt, can you share the vm command line, available in
/var/log/libvirt/qemu/vmname.**log?*

- Is this 2.9GiB/s or 2.9 MiB/s?
- Are you testing using NFS in all versions?
- What is the disk format?
- How do you test io on the host?
- What kind of nic is used? (1G, 10G?)

We need much more details to understand what do you test here.

- For ovirt, can you share the vm command line, available in
/var/log/libvirt/qemu/vmname.log?
- For Xenserver - detailed description of the vm and the storage
configuration?

[ovirt-users] Ovirt with bad IO performance

2016-09-02 Thread Gabriel Ozaki
Hi
i am trying Ovirt 4.0 and i am getting some strange results when comparing
with Xenserver

**The host machine*
Intel Core i5-4440 3.10GHz running at 3093 MHz
8 Gb of RAM (1x8)
500 Gb of Disk (seagate st500dm002 7200rpm)
CentOS 7 (netinstall for the most updated and stable packages)

**How i am testing:*
I choose two benchmark tools, sysbench(epel-repo on centos) and
novabench(for windows guest, https://novabench.com ), then i make a clean
install of xenserver and create two guests(CentOS and Windows 7 SP1)

**The Guest specs*
2 cores
4 Gb of RAM
60 Gb of disk (using virtIO in a NFS storage)
Important note: only the testing guest are up on benchmark and i have
installed the drivers in guest

**The Sysbench disk test(creates 10Gb of data and do the bench):*
# sysbench --test=fileio --file-total-size=10G prepare
# sysbench --test=fileio --file-total-size=10G --file-test-mode=rndrw
--init-rng=on --max-time=300 --max-requests=0 run

Host result:2.9843Mb/sec
Ovirt result:   1.1561Mb/sec
Xenserver result:   2.9006Mb/sec

**The novabench test:*
Ovirt result:  79Mb/s
Xenserver result:  101Mb/s

I do other tests, like cpu, memory and etc, ovirt wins with a small
advantage(less then 1%)

Adicional info:
i use this command to install ovirt repo
yum install http://resources.ovirt.org/pub/yum-repo/ovirt-release40.rpm

i follow this steps on installation:

Re: [ovirt-users] /var/run/ovirt-hosted-engine-ha/vm.conf not found

2016-09-02 Thread Pat Riehecky

Hi Simone,

Thanks for the follow up!

I'll see about pulling out some log entries and getting a bugzilla filed
with them attached.

I was able to get it working again late last night by reinstalling the
ha engine rpms and rebooting. Not sure why that fixed it, but the
engine fired right up shortly after and immediately saw all my running VMs.

vm.conf will get generated when needed converting the ovf description
in the OVF_STORE volume on the shared storage. The OVF_STORE volume
and its content are managed by the engine; in this way you can edit
the engine VM configuration from the engine in a distributed env.

Now the question is why your system is failing on this step.
Can you please attach your /var/log/ovirt-hosted-engine-ha/agent.log ?

Pat

I seem to be unable to restart my ovirt hosted engine.

I'd swear I had this issue once before, but couldn't find any

my end.

 The effectiveness of HAVEGE (HArdware Volatile Entropy Gathering and
 Expansion) on virtual machines is quite debated.
 Having more entropy on the host could also help, but yes, we also have
 to add a virtio-rng device to the engine VM:

Ok,

I have a LUN show as unntached.

how do I attach it?

one other question

do have to add the ISCSI LUN where the hosted-engine was deployed?

It will be automatically imported once you add your first storage domain for
regular VMs.

Re: [ovirt-users] ovirt 3.5.6: ERROR: duplicate key value violates unique constraint "pk_images" during import

2016-09-02 Thread Andrea Ghelardi
Ciao Sandro,
I understand your curiosity, and as said this is our production environment and
we do not have a test one to check upgrades before going live.
Coupled with the fact that system performed reasonably well until now and that
we have a long time (bad) habit of “not trying to fix what’s not broken”, we
ended up in this situation.
I’m trying to fix this approach since the last few months but changing company
habits is a rather slow process.

Cheers

Are you asking because you think this database issue would be cleared by an

version? ☺

No, I'm just asking because 3.5.6 has been released on 2015-12-01. You haven't
updated to 3.6 in 3.6 life cycle and now even 3.6 is gone to end of life adn
we're already at 3rd maintenace release for 4.0.
You're missing something like 2000 bug fixes / updates including security
fixes, urgent and high severity fixes and lot of new features (that you may or
may not need, but still...)
So I'm just curious about why you didn't upgrade. If something blocked the
upgrade on a test environment or an upgrade on a new version showed regressions
or degraded performance or maybe just a matter of "don't change what works fine"

Hi Andrea, I'm a bit curious, any reason for staying on 3.5 and not upgrading
to 3.6 / 4.0 ?

Hallo all,

I’m currently unable to import/activate VM due to error above.
It has been a long series of unfortunate events.
Long story short:
- VM running on storage on iscsi failing disks
- put storage and server in maint. Shut down server
- restart server.
- server has a misconfiguration on lvm/multipath rules (not due to ovirt)
- put storage and server active
- cluster goes down. Put storage in maintenance again. Detached storage from
cluster (ach! That was unfortunate).
- cluster now ok. Storage ok. Activate storage.
- trying to import VM. Ovirt replies with error in subject and attached.

How can I recover from this situation?
It would be great to recover the entire VM, but I’m more interested in disks
which are in unregistered state than VM itself.

Thank you all

Re: [ovirt-users] Limit DWH database size

2016-09-02 Thread nicolas
I tried adjusting the DWH_TABLES_KEEP_HOURLY parameter to a very low
value and also setting the DWH_SAMPLING parameter to 60 and restarted
both ovirt-engine-dwhd and ovirt-engine daemons, however, the database
is still huge.

So even if I change those parameters should I manually clean up the
database? If so, what's the recommended way?

Thanks.

Another option is to set the DWH_SAMPLING back to 60  and restart

 This will lower the granularity of the dashboard calculations.
 The dwh db size grow since now it samples the statistics every 15

 Earlier today replied to a similar question, search list archives for
 "Change Engine History Logging from Advanched to Basic".

 Just to confirm: I already have basic DWH configured, and the content
of /etc/ovirt-engine-dwh/ovirt-engine-dwhd.conf.d/10-setup-scale.conf
is:

   DWH_TABLES_KEEP_SAMPLES=24
   DWH_TABLES_KEEP_HOURLY=720
   DWH_TABLES_KEEP_DAILY=0

 So according to [1] regarding "DWH_TABLES_KEEP_HOURLY":

   The number of hours that hourly data is stored. The default is 60
days.
   Hourly data more than two days old is aggregated into dailydata.

 if I reduce that value to say 240 (10 days), any older entry from
that should be erased upon a DWH restart, right?

haven't updated to 3.6 in 3.6 life cycle and now even 3.6 is gone to end of
life adn we're already at 3rd maintenace release for 4.0.
You're missing something like 2000 bug fixes / updates including security
fixes, urgent and high severity fixes and lot of new features (that you may
or may not need, but still...)
So I'm just curious about why you didn't upgrade. If something blocked the
upgrade on a test environment or an upgrade on a new version showed
regressions or degraded performance or maybe just a matter of "don't change
what works fine"

In addition the VmService.start method doesn't have an "action"
parameter, it has the following parameters:

def start(
self,
async=None,
filter=None,
pause=None,
use_cloud_init=None,
use_sysprep=None,
vm=None,
):

So your code should look like this:

vm_service.start(
use_cloud_init=True,
vm=types.Vm(
...
),
)

you have to install vdsm-hook-macspoof on all the hosts of that cluster and
configure it this way
 https://github.com/oVirt/vdsm/blob/master/vdsm_hooks/macspoof/README
for that VM or just for one of its interfaces.

[ovirt-users] Promiscuous mode

2016-09-02 Thread qinglong.d...@horebdata.cn
Hi, all:
I have a vpn server in a vm, but it could not work normally. It seems
that promiscuous mode must be enabled in nic of the hypervisor. I do not know
how to set the promiscuous mode in ovirt node. Anyone can help? Thanks!

vm.conf will get generated when needed converting the ovf description in
the OVF_STORE volume on the shared storage. The OVF_STORE volume and its
content are managed by the engine; in this way you can edit the engine VM
configuration from the engine in a distributed env.

Now the question is why your system is failing on this step.
Can you please attach your /var/log/ovirt-hosted-engine-ha/agent.log ?

I'm not a VMWare expert but I suspect that you forgot enabling the
Promiscuous Mode on the vSwitch where your virtual host is connected.
vSwitch doesn't implement a MAC Learning algorithm and so only the frame
addressed to a well known MAC address (such as the interfaces of host which
is running as a VMWare virtual machine) will be sent over the right virtual
port, other frames (the ones addressed to the hosted-engine nested VM for
instance) will be lost.
Promiscuous Mode mode will fix this behavior but of course it will also
impact on the performance.

The backup of the engine DB is a single transaction by itself but we are,
optionally, saving a backup of DWH and reports DB with different commands
and so having it down is safer.
On the other side, this require the global maintenance mode since
otherwise, if the engine downtime due to backup creation is too long, the
ha-agent will reboot the engine VM to ensure HA.

You should be able to require the global maintenance mode from the engine
also via REST API.

[ovirt-users] oVirt 4 Hosted Engine Full Backup Workflow in single script

2016-09-02 Thread aleksey . maksimov
Hello oVirt guru`s !

As described in
https://www.ovirt.org/documentation/admin-guide/hosted-engine-backup-and-restore/
the backup process consists of three phases:

1) On some oVirt Host:
# hosted-engine --set-maintenance --mode=global

2) On oVirt Hosted Engine VM:
# service ovirt-engine stop
# engine-backup --mode=backup --scope=all --file=/mnt/nfsshare/backup.tar
--log=/mnt/nfsshare/backup.log
# service ovirt-engine start

3) On some oVirt Host:
# hosted-engine --set-maintenance --mode=none

As I understand it, the first and the third phase are performed on any oVirt
Host.
The second phase runs inside oVirt Hosted Engine VM.
Because hosted-engine command not provided on Hosted Engine VM :(

I have a few questions.

1) For what stop is executed for ovirt-engine service before engine-backup?
I found an interesting script
http://learnlinuxchennai.blogspot.ru/2015/08/ovirt-manager-backup-script.html
But the script is not specified stop ovirt-engine service before engine-backup.

2) Is it possible within a single script to organize all oVirt HE Backup
Workflow (phase 1, then phase 2, then phase 3)
Perhaps there is an example of such a script?
