Re: [ovirt-users] Performance differences between ext4 and XFS

2017-06-07 Thread Markus Stockhausen
Hi Fernando,

we personally like XFS very much. But XFS + qcow2 (even for snapshots in OVirt)
comes close to a no-go these days. We are experience excessive fragmentation.
For more info see unresolved Redhat Info:

https://access.redhat.com/solutions/532663

Even with tuning the XFS allocation policy on the qcow2 directory with

xfs_io -c 'extsize -R 2M'

A nice 3rd party explanation can be found here:

https://blog.codecentric.de/en/2017/04/xfs-possible-memory-allocation-deadlock-kmem_alloc/

Just wanted to find out what filesystem people are using to host Virtual
Machines in qcow2 files in a filesystem in Localstorage, ext4 or XFS ?

I normally like XFS for big files which is the case fo VMs, but wondered if
anyone could see any performance advantage when compared with ext4.

Re: [ovirt-users] Building oVirt engine on Debian

2017-06-07 Thread Leni Kadali Mutungi
Results on trying a separate build on a CentOS VM are again a freeze
at the same point as stated below:

[INFO] weaveinfo Join point 'constructor-execution(void
com.google.gwt.dev.jjs.impl.ControlFlowAnalyzer.(com.google.gwt.dev.jjs.ast.JProgram))'
in Type 'com.google.gwt.dev.jjs.impl.ControlFlowAnalyzer'
(ControlFlowAnalyzer.java:905) advised by after advice from
'org.ovirt.engine.ui.gwtaop.DontPrune' (DontPrune.java)

I assigned the CentOS VM 3GB of RAM, so that could very well be the
problem. So the next step will be to increase the RAM of the VM to 4GB
and report back with my findings.

I installed oVirt normally (from repos) on another CentOS VM and I
noticed during engine-setup that the minimum amount of RAM is 4GB and
the preferred amount is 16GB.
I'm guessing 8GB is probably not enough to build oVirt, though I think
it would do for a user install.

scarce in this regard.

Hi Anthony,

This is an implementation detail, and changing the DB directly isn't
recommended.

You can probably find some documentation in the code, but we don't maintain
schema docs.

Thanks again, I truly appreciate the help!

That should have worked, but if all else fails you can always set the host
in maintaince in the database doing this in the engine database:

update vds_dynamic set status=2 where vds_id =

you can figure out the id of the host by doing this

select vds_id from vds_static where vds_name=''

If you are feeling brave you can combine the two into a single statement,
but I would be sure you have the right host before you do that.

Then once you have updated the status, you can refresh the webadmin and the
host should be in maintenaince mode and you should be able to remove it
normally. I would not attempt more manual manipulation of the database than
setting the status to 2 (which is maintenaince).

Re: [ovirt-users] Power failure recovery

2017-06-07 Thread Chris Boot
Hi Anton,

Thanks for the suggestions; our engine has the same default values as
you posted. However it seems our engine tried to start each VM exactly 3
times: once on each host in the cluster, all within about 15 seconds,
and never tried again.

The engine logs don't appear to shed any useful light on this in my
opinion, but I could send them to you (offlist?) if that's any use.

Best regards,
Chris

Re: [ovirt-users] [EXTERNAL] Re: oVirt: Host Removal Question

2017-06-07 Thread Anthony . Fillmore
Ok - I was able to get taskcleaner.sh working. I stopped ovirt-engine service,
ran the script and cleared out active and zombie tasks. Restarted the engine,
put the host into maintenance mode and was FINALLY able to remove it.

Thanks a ton for your assistance, it is truly appreciated.

Thanks,
Tony

If there is a task still running (well the database thinks a task is running as
obviously the host is gone), you maybe be able to use the taskcleaner.sh
utility to clear out the running task.

taskcleaner.sh -h will give you all the options.

it should be in /share/ovirt-engine/setup/dbutils/taskcleaner.sh

You need sudo yum install -y vdsm-hook-nestedvt vdsm-hook-macspoof

For the macspoof bit, you apply it a bit differently, you need to
create a vNIC profile w/o the vdsm-no-mac-spoofing filter removed, and
use that profile w/ your VM's nic.

However, this is for testing ovirt under ovirt -- if you're running
ovirt VMs under something like virt-manager, this one is more
relevant: https://jebpages.com/2013/01/08/ovirt-on-ovirt-nested-kvm-fu/.

Awesome, this is exactly what I was looking for! Thank you!

One last thing - Is there a data dictionary available somewhere for the Ovirt
Postgresql DB tables and views? Some way I can view the full schema and
understand what data is located where? Documentation online seems very scarce
in this regard.

Thanks again, I truly appreciate the help!

That should have worked, but if all else fails you can always set the host in
maintaince in the database doing this in the engine database:

update vds_dynamic set status=2 where vds_id =

you can figure out the id of the host by doing this

select vds_id from vds_static where vds_name=''

If you are feeling brave you can combine the two into a single statement, but I
would be sure you have the right host before you do that.

Then once you have updated the status, you can refresh the webadmin and the
host should be in maintenaince mode and you should be able to remove it
normally. I would not attempt more manual manipulation of the database than
setting the status to 2 (which is maintenaince).

Hey Alexander,

I did those exact steps roughly two days ago...the host is still stuck in
preparing for maintenance mode. Confirming the host has been rebooted seems to
have no effect.

Any other ideas? Some way to hit the Ovirt Database and manipulate the value
for what state the host is in? Remove the host entirely from the back-end
database?

IIRC when I had that issue (I removed the host physically before removing it
from oVirt) I had to do the following:

- Right click in the grid on the host, and select confirm host has been
rebooted (this is basically you telling oVirt the host has been fenced).
- After a while the host should end up as down (or unknown state).
- You should be able to select maintaince at that point, this might take a

- This should put the host in maintaince and you should be able to remove it
then.

If there is a task still running (well the database thinks a task is running

Re: [ovirt-users] Hosted engine question: why power-off

2017-06-07 Thread Martin Sivak
Hi,

there are couple of possible reasons, one of them is that some other
host is considered significantly better than the current one where the
engine VM is running.

This can be caused by cpu load, memory load, gateway ping failures,
storage stuff.. we have couple of checks.

Best regards

Re: [ovirt-users] Power failure recovery

2017-06-07 Thread Artyom Lukianov
Under the engine-config, I can see two variables that connected to the
restart of HA VM's
MaxNumOfTriesToRunFailedAutoStartVm: "Number of attempts to restart highly
available VM that went down unexpectedly" (Value Type: Integer)
RetryToRunAutoStartVmIntervalInSeconds: "How often to try to restart highly
available VM that went down unexpectedly (in seconds)" (Value Type: Integer)
And their default parameters are:
# engine-config -g MaxNumOfTriesToRunFailedAutoStartVm
MaxNumOfTriesToRunFailedAutoStartVm: 10 version: general
# engine-config -g RetryToRunAutoStartVmIntervalInSeconds
RetryToRunAutoStartVmIntervalInSeconds: 30 version: general

So check the engine.log if you do not see that the engine restarts the HA
VM's ten times, it is definitely a bug otherwise, you can just to play with
this parameters to adapt it to your case.

[ovirt-users] ISCSI storage with multiple nics on same subnet disabled on host activation

2017-06-07 Thread Nelson Lameiras
Hello,

In our oVirt hosts, we are using DELL equallogic SAN with each server
connecting to SAN via 2 physical interfaces. Since both interfaces share the
same network (Equalogic limitation) we must patch the linux kernel to to allow
iSCSI multipath with multiple NICs in the same subnet with sysctl :

net.ipv4.conf.p2p1.arp_ignore=1
net.ipv4.conf.p2p1.arp_announce=2
net.ipv4.conf.p2p1.rp_filter=2

net.ipv4.conf.p2p2.arp_ignore=1
net.ipv4.conf.p2p2.arp_announce=2
net.ipv4.conf.p2p2.rp_filter=2

This works great in most setups, but for a strange reason, on some of our
setups, the sysctl configuration is updated by VDSM when activating a host and
the second interface stops working immeadiatly :

vdsm.log
2017-06-07 11:51:51,063+0200 INFO (jsonrpc/5) [storage.ISCSI] Setting strict
mode rp_filter for device 'p2p2'. (iscsi:602)

"strict mode" is enforced for second interface, and it no longuer works...
Which means - at least - that there is no redundancy in case of hardware
faillure and this is not acceptable for our production needs.

What is really strange is that we have another "twin" site on another
geographic region with simillar hardware configuration and same oVirt
installation, and this problem does not happen.

What can be the root cause of this behaviour? How can I correct it?

our setup:
hostedEngine : Centor 7.3, ovirt 4.1.2
3 physical nodes centos 7.3, ovirt 4.1.2

Name resolution seams fine:
2017-06-07 04:26:23 INFO otopi.plugins.gr_he_common.vm.cloud_init
cloud_init._customize_vm_addressing:282 The engine VM will be configured to

I that VM still up?
could you please try to fetch somehow engine.log from there?

Re: [ovirt-users] nic order

2017-06-07 Thread Yevgeny Zaspitsky
You can activate reordering by using oVirt REST API. Sending POST request
to http://${engine_address}/vms/${vm_id}/reordermacaddresses URL should do
the job.
Please note that it would reorder all vnics of the VM that PCI address
wasn't assigned to them, in other words the VM wasn't run since the vnic
was added to it.

2017-06-07 Thread suporte
Hi,

I didn't try Guest tools version 4.1.5 in w2016, but here was the same with
w2016. When trying to transfer a 300GB files, the networks as a behavior like
"stop and go", some time it goes down for a seconds and than restarts
transferring again, and keeps slowing down.
And also, I find no errors.

Hi,

right now I’m thinking of doing the same. I couldn’t find any explanation why
the Win2016 Server behave like they do at this point. I do think that it might
be an issue that is coming up only when running in the oVirt/RHEV setup, maybe
the guest drivers or anything else ? I’ve tried several things including the
latest version of the Guest tools 4.1.5 and couldn’t get normal behavior. It
seems that after restarting the servers everything is normal for a certain time
and then things stop working fine. The Issue is strange because the network is
working you can do pings and use RDP, but as soon as you try to move more data
is nearly stops working at all. This all based on observation since there are
no errors.

Example: I restart the dc and another server and run a dcdiag from the other
server it works fine. Some time down the line running it just doesn’t work out.
It looks like it’s tring to do something but can’t finish due to something with
the network, but it doesn’t stop with network error. Trying to move a file at
this stage will work with something like 5kb/s or so.

Bottom line I don’t have time to work this out, thus switching back to 2K12R2.

The only thing that I can think it that the HE VM FQDN does not resolvable
via DNS, so when the HE deployment tries to reach it, he fails.
Can you check that you can connect to the HE VM via FQDN "happyhourovirt"
after the engine-setup?

[ovirt-users] Power failure recovery

2017-06-07 Thread Chris Boot
Hi all,

We've got a three-node "hyper-converged" oVirt 4.1.2 + GlusterFS cluster
on brand new hardware. It's not quite in production yet but, as these
things always go, we already have some important VMs on it.

Last night the servers (which aren't yet on UPS) suffered a brief power
failure. They all booted up cleanly and the hosted engine started up ~10
minutes afterwards (presumably once the engine GlusterFS volume was
sufficiently healed and the HA stack realised). So far so good.

As soon at the HostedEngine started up it tried to start all our Highly
Available VMs. Unfortunately our master storage domain was as yet
inactive as GlusterFS was presumably still trying to get it healed.
About 10 minutes later the master domain was activated and
"reconstructed" and an SPM was selected, but oVirt had tried and failed
to start all the HA VMs already and didn't bother trying again.

All the VMs started just fine this morning when we realised what
happened and logged-in to oVirt to start them.

Is this known and/or expected behaviour? Can we do anything to delay
starting HA VMs until the storage domains are there? Can we get oVirt to
keep trying to start HA VMs when they fail to start?

Is there a bug for this already or should I be raising one?

Thanks,
Chris

Re: [ovirt-users] hosted-engine network

2017-06-07 Thread Martin Sivak
Hi all,

Yanir is right, the local vm.conf is just a cache of what was
retrieved from the engine.

I might be interesting to check what the configuration of the engine
VM shows when edited using the webadmin. Or enable debug logging [1]
for hosted engine and add the OVF dump we send there now and then (the
xml representation of the VM).

[1] See /etc/ovirt-hosted-engine-ha/agent-log.conf and change the
level for root logger to DEBUG

Best regards

Martin Sivak

Hi Ling,
it's working as expected in 4.1 now but it's not something you could
achieve with live storage migration from the GUI up to now.

You have to use the backup and restore flow adding --he-remove-storage-vm
--he-remove-hosts options to let the auto-import process trigger again:
http://www.ovirt.org/develop/developer-guide/engine/migrate-to-hosted-engine/

Please look also at this:

did the newest driver solve anything for you with the network on Win-Svr 2016 ?
I Started to install some Win2016 servers and things just don’t work out and I
can’t find any issues. Just that I noticed that the network is slow when there
is more and more traffic.

Hi,

The latest version and the one that support 2016 is 4.1-5.

You can get it from here:

The issue is that it's currently missing from el7 thus the issue.

I was able to install oVirt-toolsSetup_4.0-1.fc223 but when trying to transfer

Re: [ovirt-users] hosted engine unattended install fails

2017-06-07 Thread Ramachandra Reddy Ankireddypalle
HI,
Thanks for looking in to the issue. It turns out that the error happens
if I use bonded interface. If I use regular eth interface everything works
fine. Please suggest what needs to be done for bonding to work.

Thanks and Regards,
Ram

Hi,

Can you please check if your cluster has both virt + gluster
services enabled from the engine vm? You can run the command
'engine-config -g AllowClusterWithVirtGlusterEnabled' to see if this is
enabled. If not, can you run the command command=engine-config -s
AllowClusterWithVirtGlusterEnabled=true and press continue setup and
this should work.

But these issues are fixed in the latest version. Can you please
let me know which version are you using ?

Thanks

I finally figured out what the error was all about

The default location for the gdeploy script is:
/usr/share/ansible/gdeploy/scripts/grafton-sanity-check.sh

The oVirt node installer
"ovirt-node-ng-installer-ovirt-4.1-2017060504.iso" installed it in a
different location:

/usr/share/gdeploy/scripts/grafton-sanity-check.sh

I copied the "gdeploy" folder to the default location & the error went
away.

error**

Hi ,

Good to know that it worked after changing the script path. This
change is brought in with ansible2.3 and we have a bug to change it to
correct path from cockpit UI. Not sure what the state of bug now. But
we should have it fixed soon.

[ovirt-users] hosted engine install fails for bonded interface

2017-06-07 Thread Ramachandra Reddy Ankireddypalle
Hi,
I created a bonded interface consisting of two network interfaces.
When I tried to install hosted engine over the bonded interface, it fails
at the end with the following error message:

[ ERROR ] Cannot automatically add the host to cluster Default:
  400
Bad Request Bad Request Your browser sent
a request that this server could not understand.

If I try to install over the eth interface instead of the bonded
interface the install succeeds. Please suggest what needs to be done to use
bonded interface.
