[ovirt-users] Cannnot change display resolution using spice

2017-06-08 Thread Станислав Ефремов
I`m using CentOS Linux release 7.3.1611 and oVirt 4.1.2

I`m testing oVirt to use it like vdi solution. I cannot change resolution
everywhere, except Fedora 25 with Gnome3 and GDM.

In others distro display resolution setting 1024x768 and might be set to
800x600.

Xrandr shows all available modes but when I set resolution its failed and I
cannot interact with desktop except ctrl-alt-f1.

Can it related to vgamem?

General comment - 30 seconds is A LOT. Many application-level IO might
timeout. Most storage strive to remain lower than that.

oVirt is not pausing VMs. qemu-kvm pauses the specific VM that issues an IO
and that IO is stuck. The reason is that the VM cannot reliably continue
without a concern for data loss (the data is in-flight somewhere, right?
host kernel, NIC buffers, etc.)

We do monitor storage domain health regularly. We are working on ignoring
short hiccups (see https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1459370 for
example).

As explained above, generally, no. We can't do much tbh, and we'd like to
ensure there is no data loss.
That being said, in extreme cases hosts may become unresponsive - if you
have fencing they may even be fenced (there's an option to fence a host
which cannot renew its storage lease). We have not seen that happening for
quite some time, and I don't anticipate short storage hiccups to cause that
, though.
Depending on your application, it may be the right thing to do, btw.

Hi Lev.

I am create new virtual host, and run ping from internet.

Ping results 70% packet loss.

But, if i am running ping from virtual host to somebody host in the
internet and at the same time, i am pinging this virtual host from internet.

then ping results 0% packet loss or 10% packet loss.

Does this happen on both hosts - have you tried to migrate the VM to
the second host and see if the issue still remains?

Hi Alexander,

So if I understand it correctly, you have the following configuration:
- 2 hosts, each having 2 NICs
- 2 virtual machines, each have a connection to each one of the NICs
available on the hosts

On one of the VMs you only see 1 NIC instead of the 2?

Are you sure that the VM is properly configured to have 2 NICs?

What Linux distro and version you're using on the hosts and inside
the VMs ?

Can you please send us:
- the logs from the VM, e.g. /var/log/messages
- the output of lspci -v
- the output of ip link

Thanks in advance,

Yes, this is right, you need to add oVirt repositories by installing
relevant ovirt-release package to the host manually before you try to add a
host in webadmin. The only exception is NGN node, which already contains
all required packages by default in installation image.

Yeah when I setup a host for testing I always do:

1. Get minimal install of centos 7.
2. yum install http://resources.ovirt.org/pub/yum-repo/ovirt-releaseXX.rpm
where XX is the version I am working with.
3. Make sure sshd is up and running and my engine can connect.
4. Install the host through the UI.

Haven't had that sequence fail in years.

[ovirt-users] Host install common error

2017-06-08 Thread FERNANDO FREDIANI

Hello folks.

One of the most (if not the more) annoying problems of oVirt is the
known message "... installation failed. Command returned failure code 1
during SSH session ..." which happens quiet often in several situations.

Scrubbing installation logs it seems that most stuff goes well, but then
it stops in a message saying: "ERROR otopi.context
context._executeMethod:151 Failed to execute stage 'Setup validation':
Cannot locate vdsm package, possible cause is incorrect channels" -
followed by another message: "DEBUG otopi.context
context.dumpEnvironment:770 ENV BASE/exceptionInfo=list:'[('exceptions.RuntimeError'>, RuntimeError('Cannot locate vdsm package,
possible cause is incorrect channels',), )]'"

I am not sure why would it complain about the repositories as this is a
Minimal CentOS 7 Install and the oVirt repository is added by
oVirt-Engine itself so I assumed it added the most appropriate to its
own version.
I even tried to copy over the same repositories used on the Hosts that
are installed and working fine but that message shows up again on the
Install retries.

Does anyone have any other hints where to look ?

For reference my engine version running is: 4.1.1.6-1.el7.centos.

Depends on your needs, be aware to the following:
- Each domain has its own metadata which allocates ~5GB of the domain size.
- Each domain is being constatntly monitored by the system, so large number
of domain can decrease the system performance.
There are also downsides with having big domains, like less flexability

with ext4.

[ovirt-users] Hosted engine

2017-06-08 Thread Joel Diaz
Good morning oVirt community,

I'm running a three host gluster environment with hosted engine.

Yesterday the engine went down and has not been able to come up properly.
It tries to start on all three host.

I have two gluster volumes, data and engne. The data storage domian volume
is no longer mounted but the engine volume is up. I've restarted the
gluster service and make sure both volumes were running. The data volume
will not mount.

How can I get the engine running properly again?

Thanks,

Joel

Re: [ovirt-users] Network interface not working

2017-06-08 Thread Lev Veyde
Hi Alex,

So if you're sending data out there is no or almost no data loss?

Have you tried to move the VM to the second host to see if it makes any
difference?

I actually tried to call you by phone but the call gets dropped once I
enter * and your ext. number, as the voice prompt says to.
Tried to enter the ext. number directly without *, still without success.

Thanks in advance,

Hi Denis,

Ok I will file a bug for this.
I am not sure if I will be able to provide troubleshooting info for much
long as I already have put forward the replacement of disks with 512 ones.

[ovirt-users] oVirt storage best practise

2017-06-08 Thread Stefano Bovina
Hi,
does a storage best practise document for oVirt exist?

Some examples:

oVirt allows to extend an existing storage domain: Is it better to keep a
1:1 relation between LUN and oVirt storage domain?
If not, is it better to avoid adding LUNs to an already existing storage
domain?

Following the previous questions:

Is it better to have 1 Big oVirt storage domain or many small oVirt storage
domains?
There is a max num VM/disks for storage domain?

In which case is it better to use "direct attached lun" with respect to an
image on an oVirt storage domain?

Example:

Simple web server:   > image
Large database (simple example):
   - root,swap etc: 30GB  > image?
   - data disk: 500GB-> (direct or image?)

Stefano

OK.
I'm using that configuration too.
And also with physical hosts, used as physical RDBMS servers, that connect
to Dell EQL iSCSI SAN, not only for oVirt.
It is a requirement so that you are sure that the packets come back to the
same interface, because of more that 1 network interface on the same lan.
That said, I noticed that oVirt creates the file "vdsm.conf" under
/etc/sysctl.d, with these contents

net.ipv4.conf.default.arp_ignore = 1
net.ipv4.conf.default.arp_announce = 2

So this settings doesn't need to be overwritten by you. Do you have that
file too?

In my case I left the oVirt generated file and created two more files in
/etc/sysctl.d, named 50-iscsi.conf and equallogic.conf

Their contents:

- 50-iscsi.conf

net.ipv4.conf.p1p1/100.arp_announce=2
net.ipv4.conf.p1p1/100.arp_ignore=1
#
net.ipv4.conf.p1p1/100.rp_filter=2
net.ipv4.conf.p1p2.rp_filter=2

The reason of the first two lines is that vlan interfaces apparently didn't
inherited the arp_announce and arp_ignore settings so I put them for the
vlan set interface, no need for the other one (p1p2 in my case)
The reason of the second two lines is to add the third sysctl setting
needed by EQL
So I think you can have a 50-iscsi.conf file only composed by:

net.ipv4.conf.p2p1.rp_filter=2
net.ipv4.conf.p2p2.rp_filter=2

- equallogic.conf

net.core.rmem_default = 262144
net.core.rmem_max = 16777216
net.core.wmem_default = 262144
net.core.wmem_max = 16777216
net.ipv4.tcp_rmem = 8192 87380 16777216
net.ipv4.tcp_wmem = 4096 65536 16777216

# Defaults were:
#net.core.rmem_default = 212992
#net.core.rmem_max = 212992
#net.core.wmem_default = 212992
#net.core.wmem_max = 212992
#net.ipv4.tcp_rmem = 4096 87380 6291456
#net.ipv4.tcp_wmem = 4096 16384 4194304

I had the further need to use both interfaces for VM network, but, also if
not, I couldn't setup multipathing.
I have a requirement to have iSCSI on vlan and when setting the two
interfaces on the same vlan (so also in oVirt), oVirt complained about that.
So this lets me think that if instead you have both network interfaces in
access mode, without vlan, oVirt doesn't complain when you try toset the
multipathing

If this is the case, I think I could have tested (probably I didn't, I
don't remember) this scenario

Both interfaces on vlan 100 but the network switch port configured with
default vlan as 100, so that form OS point of view, and oVirt point of
view, no vlan in place and perhaps

It seems to be a VDSM issue, as VDSM uses direct IO (and id actualy calls
dd) and assumes that block size is 512. I see in the code, that block size
is defined as a constant, so it probably may be adjusted, but i think it

Hello,

In our oVirt hosts, we are using DELL equallogic SAN with each server
connecting to SAN via 2 physical interfaces. Since both interfaces share the
same network (Equalogic limitation) we must patch the linux kernel to to allow
iSCSI multipath with multiple NICs in the same subnet with sysctl :

net.ipv4.conf.p2p1.arp_ignore=1
net.ipv4.conf.p2p1.arp_announce=2
net.ipv4.conf.p2p1.rp_filter=2

Hello Nelson,
nice to see another environment based on EQL iSCSI SAN.
The systctl.conf customized lines above are not what you mean with "we must

Sorry, by "patch" I meant "sysctl.conf configuration" indeed.
This configuration is what we use to be able to configure 2 network interfaces
in the same subnet.

This works great in most setups, but for a strange reason, on some of our

"strict mode" is enforced for second interface, and it no longuer works...
Which means - at least - that there is no redundancy in case of hardware
faillure and this is not acceptable for our production needs.

What is really strange is that we have another "twin" site on another
geographic region with simillar hardware configuration and same oVirt

What can be the root cause of this behaviour? How can I correct it?

Actually it is very strange to me to understand how you don't have problems on
the other side.
My workaround to get multipath with EQL in oVirt was the one explained here
with screenshots:
http://lists.ovirt.org/pipermail/users/2017-March/080992.html
It has been working now for about 3 months without problems. We have several
Oracle RDBMS server VMs on it, from 2virtual threads and 8Gb of ram to 16
threads (2-4-2) and 64Gb of ram
How did you configure multipath instead? As far as I know oVirt will not let
you do it.
The only way would be to use bonding but that is not certified/supported by
Dell.
HIH sharing experiences,
Gianluca

BQ_END

I've read the link you gave and it seems to me that you are using the same
physical interface for SAN and vm network.
In my setup :
- SAN network is using two disctinct physical interfaces (p2pX) on same subnet
(therefore the need for sysctl patch)
- VM network (p1pX) is using 2 other distinct physical interfaces on "trunk"
mode
- Administration network (emX) is using 2 distinct bonded network interfaces

Our setup, using a total of 6 network interfaces is "simpler" than yours

Hello Nelson,
nice to see another environment based on EQL iSCSI SAN.
The systctl.conf customized lines above are not what you mean with "we must
patch the linux kernel", is it?
What do you mean exactly?

I'm using plain CentOS 7.3 hosts as hypervisors; is this your case too or
are you using ovirt-ng nodes?

Actually it is very strange to me to understand how you don't have problems
on the other side.
My workaround to get multipath with EQL in oVirt was the one explained here
with screenshots:
http://lists.ovirt.org/pipermail/users/2017-March/080992.html

It has been working now for about 3 months without problems. We have
several Oracle RDBMS server VMs on it, from 2virtual threads and 8Gb of ram
to 16 threads (2-4-2) and 64Gb of ram
How did you configure multipath instead? As far as I know oVirt will not
let you do it.
The only way would be to use bonding but that is not certified/supported by
Dell.

HIH sharing experiences,

See end of README.adoc and ovirt_build_minimal - you can check the spec
file to see what it causes rpmbuild to actually pass to make.

This is unrelated to building.

For merely starting an engine and see that it works and you can login,
1-2GB are enough too.

For building, I do not know - IIRC last time I built an engine myself,
not in jenkins, I used a 16GB machine. Memory usage depends a lot on
what you choose to build and how - already discussed this in the past.
