The dependent bug on allowing single node gluster volume will suffice for
manual deployment - that is, provision the gluser volumes using a gdeploy
configuration file. There are further changes needed to ensure that the
Cockpit UI based deployment supports single node gluster deployment.

In the browser's address bar, you need to supply a url
with exactly the same name as the one you supplied to
engine-setup when asked for the FQDN.

If you need something else, please search the list archives
for "SSO_ALTERNATE_ENGINE_FQDNS".

[ovirt-users] host-passthrough or pcid enable for Westmere and SandyBridge

2018-01-10 Thread Eduardo Mayoral
Hi,

With the meltdown patches, now it is specially beneficial to have
the pcid feature in the virtual CPUs. See:

https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/mechanical-sympathy/L9mHTbeQLNU

The PCID feature is available in physical "Westmere" (Release date
circa 2010) or newer CPUs.

However, in libvirt the pcid feature is only avalilable for virtual
CPUs Haswell (Release date circa 2013) or newer. The recomendation is
using Haswell, Broadwell or Skylake based model or host passthrough.
Now, I think "host passthrough" is not an option for oVirt for good
reason so this leaves Haswell, Broadwell or Skylake as options.

Is it possible to edit /usr/share/libvirt/cpu_map.xml on the compute
nodes to add the pcid feature to the virtual CPU models between Westmere
and Haswell (that would be Westmere and SandyBridge)? Is anyone aware if
something like this is being considered by the libvirt developers?
Actually understanding the implications or doing so is way beyond my
skill level.

By now you may have guessed that my oVirt clusters use physical
Westmere and SandyBridge CPUs :-/

Thanks in advance for your help!

I just realised where I was getting confused, I simply was mixing up 'oVirt
live' and 'oVirt node', both of which also have a very similar looking
documentation page.

I've submitted a MR to clarify that oVirt live is deprecated, and to add a link
to oVirt node: https://github.com/oVirt/ovirt-site/pull/1478

Indeed, this interface acts as a 20Gbit LACP bond to the core switches passing
not just iSCSI traffic over a specific VLAN but providing other VLANs /
networks to servers.

I think there are two interesting questions here:
1. Why would you want RAID? Your data is replicated already on other
Gluster nodes. RAID writes will wear out the SSDs earlier and RAID 'wastes'
additional space. The reason may be because you don't want the node to go
down in case of a single disk malfunction. Fair - but is that the case?
2. I think HW RAID should be higher performing, but that's about it.
Y.

2018-01-10 Thread FERNANDO FREDIANI
I really don't see much need of using hardware raid if you have a
SSD-only environment. You will get little benefit from hardware cache
memory and to guarantee the writes you may having the filesystem doing
always sync operations, similar to what ZFS does. You just need to use a
HBA to controll all disks ou even software RAID will do the job.

[ovirt-users] Hosted Engine and network isolation

2018-01-10 Thread Luca 'remix_tj' Lorenzetto
Hello,

i just completed the setup of my 4.1 new cluster and i'm validating
against a set of certification tests i did in the earlier version.

One of the test was consisting on isolating the host where
hosted-engine vm is running, setting ports on the switch down. Storage
domain hosting the engine is FC.

Up to 4.0.4, that was the version we was using during that tests,
isolating the host was causing a restart of the engine vm on another
available host with the fence of the isolated host.

Now, with 4.1.8, isolating the host doesn't restart the engine on the
other host, only moves the status of the host2 to
EngineUnexpectedlyDown, while host1 is isolated, with the engine vm
still running on it.

Is this due to storage leases? What should be the right action to take
in case of isolated host for moving engine away?

Thank you,

Luca

Wasn't there a Ridning Hood not long ago that said they'd change it
down to 1 with 4.2, just to have something to get you started? To lower the
bar for POC systems, like all-in-one?

Here’s the RHHI guide, it’s pretty much the same for oVirt:

Re: [ovirt-users] ovirt-live 4.2 - missing stable ISO? + Networking question - when to setup host & in NM or ifcfg?

Excellent responses, I think you really covered everything quite well there.

I’d heard some contradictory information from various sources so wasn’t quite
sure what to believe.

I’ve already contributed one (tiny) documentation patch that was merged in
yesterday - if we go ahead with ovirt from XenServer - I’ll definitely be
contributing more, you have my word on that.

Thanks again for your time.

I'm hoping we have deprecated it. For demo purposes, you could set up
ovirt-system-tests[1]. For an all-in-one you could either install the
Engine and the hypervisor on the same physical host, or a
self-hosted-engine with a single physical node.

Either is fine.

It is, though if not needed, I think it's easier to do it later via oVirt.

It is, though it might be easier to do it later via oVirt (unless you need
it to access the storage Hosted-Engine is using!)

Our documentation, like the code, is open source. Patches are always
welcome.

With iSCSI, I prefer multipathing, but I see why you'd want bond, if it's
used for other traffic as well.
