As said in previous reply, right now we're missing substantial features to
be planned to justify a new 4.5 version.
You're welcome to join and contribute to help shaping the project's roadmap.

I just want to point out that IBM has nothing to do with oVirt lifecycle.
IBM used to be in oVirt Board for several years but right now the oVirt
Board is composed by Red Hat and Caltech representatives.

[ovirt-users] Hello.which environment type I choose?

2021-01-25 Thread 欧文
Dear:
Hello. My name is Owen. First, I appreciate you spend time to check my
email. Recently I want to use oVirt to build a project. But after reading
the official document, I have some questions to ask. The project is
intended to set up a physical server that is used to implement
virtualization, Variable quantity of thin clients for users. But I don't
know which environment types I should use to deploy. The number two
question is why the system environment is different between each version of
o-virt?Because centos 7 is the major version. But so many versions of
o-virt is not centos 7 or centos 8.can you tell me the reason. Thank you.At
last, I have a question.I ever joined the IRC, but there is no response to
answer my question. Could you tell me where I can take part in the
community with developers who develope o-virt.Thanks

[ovirt-users] 'python-nftables' failed. There is a big problem with Firewalld and openvswitch on Centos 8.3

2021-01-25 Thread Сергей Шопин
I have deployed a new cluster on versions:
3 Hosts: Centos 8.3 and last update
Ovirt: 4.4.4.7-1.el8

Cluster properties: switch - OVS; Firewall - Firewalld

During the initial deployment of the host in such a cluster, everything is
successfully installed, all virtual networks and bridges are created, and the
host is activated.

But after that, Firewalld does not work correctly, for example, when executing
the command
firewall-cmd --reload
Issued by:
Error: COMMAND_FAILED: 'python-nftables' failed:
JSON blob:
{"nftables": [{"metainfo": {"json_schema_version": 1}}, {"add": {"table":

{"left": {"ct": {"key": "state"}}, "op": "in", "right": {"set": ["established",
"related"]}}}, {"accept": null}]}}}]}

Now all ansible-playbook ovirt starts to execute uncorrectly

For example this error is thrown every time I try to reinstall the host:

VDSM SMnode02 command CollectVdsNetworkDataAfterInstallationVDS failed:
Internal JSON-RPC error: {'reason': ’management’}

I understand that ovirt correctly executes scripts, and this problem is related
to the applications Firewalld, openvswitch, NetworkManager.

Is there some workaround so that at least ovirt can re-install hosts?

[ovirt-users] Unable to ping host from VM's or VM's from host

2021-01-25 Thread David Johnson
I have a brand new Ovirt 4.5 cluster on centos 8 and brand new hardware.

I have a set of VM's, some of whom I have been able to connect to in the
past, others that I have never been able to connect to other than with the
SPICE console ui.

Right now, I am unable to connect from outside my cluster to any of the
VPN's other than through the SPICE console.

Host IP: 192.168.2.188 Physical Address

Example VM IP: 10.21.10.101 with vLAN tag

Works:
* I can connect between vm's on the same subnet on the same VM.
When logged into 10.21.10.101 I can ping 10.21.10.100

Doesn't work:
* I cannot connect from VM's to the host.
* I cannot connect from the host to VM's
PING 10.21.10.100 (10.21.10.100) 56(84) bytes of data.
From <> icmp_seq=1 Destination Host Unreachable

* I cannot connect from the VM's to the internet gateway
* I cannot connect to the VM's from other systems on the physical network
"Destination Host Unreachable"

To me it looks like the virtual bridge is misconfigured, but I can't figure
out how to reconfigure it.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

David Johnson

In fact, our core production environment has been using redhat virtualization
since 2015, and upgrading from rhev 3.3 to rhv4.3 all the way, the platform is
getting better and better.

But the guys at Red Hat have been reluctant to tell us whether redhat
virtualization will continue. I have tried kubevirt on openshift, and it is
obviously far from an enterprise product.

So it is disappointed to hear that ovirt will stay at version 4.4, which means
it will gradually die.

[ovirt-users] Re: Geographically-distrbuted Ovirt Cluster?

2021-01-25 Thread Thomas Hoberg
A geographically distributed cluster is a very expensive random number
generator: any cluster crtically depends on the assumption that the
communication between nodes is at least an order of magnitude more reliable
than the node itself. Otherwise you just multiply the chance of failures.

That doesn't mean that you cannot replicate read-mostly content across data
centers or geographies, you'll just have to manage the conflicts that might
result e.g. via an eventual consistency approach, that is typically implemented
at the application level, sometimes in middle-ware or databases.

Geographic distribution in Gluster is a continuous back facility designed to
support a warm standby (AFAIK without guarantee on storage consistency). You
can use the oVirt REST API to turn that into an automated warm-standby
activation duplicating in a way what oVirt does internally with VMs. But if
you're not careful, this can go wrong far too many ways for mere mortals: The
CAP theorem is as easy to cheat as the laws of physics and that's why oVirt
doesn't deal with disaster scenarios.

[ovirt-users] Re: vGPU on ovirt 4.3

2021-01-25 Thread Alex McWhirter
IIRC oVirt 4.3 should have the basic hooks in place for mdev
passthrough. For nvidia this mean you need the vgpu drivers and a
license server. These licenses have a recurring cost.

AMD's solution uses SR-IOV, and requires a custom kernel module that is
not well tested YMMV.

You can also passthrough entire cards in ovirt without any drivers,
granted since the amount of GPU's you can stuff into a server is limited
this is probably not ideal. Nvidia blocks this on consumer level cards.

Intel also has a mdev solution that is built into mesa / the kernel
already, we have used it with VCA cards in the past, but perhaps the new
Intel GPU's support it as well? Intel is the only option that will allow
you to feed the framebuffer data back into spice so you can use the
ovirt console. All other options require you to create a remote session
to the guest directly.

[ovirt-users] Re: Is there a plan for ovirt 4.5 and furture versions?

2021-01-25 Thread Thomas Hoberg
To your question "Is it worth building a new virtualization platform based on
ovirt?" Sandro answered "currently there's no change in the Red Hat's support
of the oVirt project".

That may technically be true, but it doesn't really answer your question, I'd
believe.

oVirt is a management layer which has carried the motto "oVirt is a free
open-source virtualization solution for your entire enterprise" on its head
page for years.

In my experience oVirt hasn't been nearly ready and stable enough to run an
enterprise workload, unless you are ready to maintain a fully redundant team of
engineers to do QA on all your use cases.

The CentOS base, however, has been enterprise quality, just as good as RHEL
without the extra hassle of registration servers: I don't think we ever rolled
back an update in over 10 years because it broke any of our workloads. And that
was including OpenVZ on dozens of machines and thousands of containers.

With oVirt 4.3 and CentOS 7 you knew which part you could trust and where to
look for errors (I found more than I believed possible).

With the de-facto elimination of CentOS as a functional RHEL clone, oVirt 4.4
becomes upstream-on-upstream and you know how fault probabilities don't add but
*multiply* when you combine them.

With that you now need three QA teams, one for CentOS-Stream, one for oVirt and
another for the integration.

Not even oVirt 4.4 on RHEL 8 will be a proper choice, because that combination
is also no longer a part of what little test automation oVirt receives.

Only RHV on RHEL will be properly tested and CentOS/oVirt as a
dev/QA/home/hobby ramp to RHV/RHEL is lost.

And CentOS 8 seems to decay before they even switch to upstream. I've just done
an update on my single-node HCI oVirt 4.4 infrastructure the other day, which
installed a new kernel on the host (4.18.0-240.10.1.el8_3 vs.
4.18.0-193.19.1.el8_2). It turns out that kernel broke VDO because of
kernel/library mismatch caused by repository issues you'd need to manually
resolve, while VDO is a key ingredient to the HCI stack (error #1). VDO is
still treated as an "external" contribution I don't know how many years after
the aquisition. So on top of the mismatching userland and kernel versions, the
VDO module isn't signed (error #2), which can throw a wrench in your system if
e.g. after a BIOS update your system is reset to secure boot.

Error #1 should show on RHEL, too, unless CentOS is no longer downstream of
RHEL already, while error #2 indicates that the CentOS process is broken
because VDO is only signed for RHEL.

In other words, the "enterprise quality" of CentOS is already going up in
smoke, while CentOS8 isn't yet officially dead.

I might count myself lucky, that I haven't done the oVirt 4.4 migration of my
HCI clusters yet, mostly beacuse it's far from seamless, extremely risky and
very disruptive.

Now I just won't do that because oVirt 4.4/CentOS 8 is EOL this year, while
CentOS 7 still has a couple of years left. By then, I'll hopefully have found a
new home for the non-production workloads I manage.

My hope of replacing the VMware production environment with a combination of
oVirt and RHV has been erased: My confidence that IBM will let oVirt will
survive another ten years is practically zero.

Redhat should know that nothing is as important as the size of the user base
for software to survive. oVirt/RHV's biggest chance would lie in everybody
building their home clusters using 3-node HCI running on Raspberry PI 4 nodes
or Atoms... with seamless K8 integration.

Had a problem with the engine server, the clock changed to 2026 and now I don't
have any report on the dashboard.
The version is 4.2.3.8-1.el7

Any idea?

[ovirt-users] Re: vGPU on ovirt 4.3

2021-01-25 Thread Thomas Hoberg
The main issue isn't oVirt, but Nvidia's drivers inside a virtual machine: You
use 'unapproved' GPUs in what Nvidia drivers recognise as a VM, they'll refuse
to load.

RTX series cards should be ok, I've tried K40 and P100 and they are just as
fine with oVirt pass-through.
V100 tests are still outstanding, but I am glad Matthias is reporting success.

I've been able to trick consumer GPUs into working with KVM on machines that I
also use for oVirt, but oVirt itself is constructing the XML files for KVM
on-the-fly, so you'd have to fiddle with the code that builds them: I haven't
even found that yet.

In terms of video rendering I've found the VirtualGL project
(https://virtualgl.org/) rather fascinating, which allowed me to run the
unengine singularity benchmark and "game" on a V100 GPU projected to a notebook
hundreds of kilometers away...

The RTX series is supposed to enable partitioning of the GPUs, so several
students can get a slice each: Never tried, don't know if that requries extra
drivers etc. The target here is evidently remote CAD for aviation and defense,
where money belts are quite a bit wider than in education.

2021-01-25 Thread Thomas Hoberg
I would agree, if CentOS 8 could still be considered a proper base to build on.
But since that is now EOL at the end of this year, oVirt is no longer viable,
because it's beta-on-beta.

I can only hope that IBM will read the writing on the wall before you guys will
be out of a job.

[ovirt-users] Re: New setup - Failing to Activate storage domain on NFS shared storage

2021-01-25 Thread Matt Snow
I can confirm that removing "--manage-gids" flag from RPCMOUNTDOPTS in
/etc/default/nfs-kernel-server now allows me to add the ZFS backed NFS
share.

>From the man page :

-g or --manage-gids
Accept requests from the kernel to map user id numbers into lists of group
id numbers for use in access control. An NFS request will normally (except
when using Kerberos or other cryptographic authentication) contains a
user-id and a list of group-ids. Due to a limitation in the NFS protocol,
at most 16 groups ids can be listed. If you use the -g flag, then the list
of group ids received from the client will be replaced by a list of group
ids determined by an appropriate lookup on the server. Note that the
'primary' group id is not affected so a newgroup command on the client will
still be effective. This function requires a Linux Kernel with version at
least 2.6.21.

I speculate that if I had directory services setup and the NFS server
directed there, this would be a non-issue.

Thank you so much for your help on this, Nir & Team!

Please note oVirt 4.3 is no longer maintained, I would recommend planning
an upgrade to 4.4.

First of all ,

verify the gluster volume options (gluster volume info ; gluster
volume status ).When you use HCI, ovirt sets up a lot of optimized
options in order to gain the maximum of the Gluster storage.

[ovirt-users] Re: HCI Deployment via Ansible

2021-01-25 Thread penguin pages
HCI creates three volumes

engine
data
vmstore

engine is dedicated for just hosted engine and its database... this one I think
will be a control plane that I hope with tasks like snapshots.. upgrades and
patches could be deployed with some aspect of recovery.. but if that fails..
redeployment would be isolated.

data and vmstore .. I think this is for hosting the Database for oVirt iso
storage, but if the engine is down.. and its database.. no way to stich the VMs
back together. Some VMs I just need streamline way to ingest back into new
deployed engine. Maybe someone has script to parse those volumes and offer
"would you like to import these VMs"

The article you cited,
https://www.openshift.com/blog/blog-openshift-virtualization-whats-new-with-virtualization-from-red-hat

describes the plans for Red Hat Virtualization product and its path going
forward toward OpenShift Virtualization product.
As a product, Red Hat Virtualization has a different lifecycle than oVirt
which is a community project.

Regarding the oVirt project, back on the beginning of oVirt 4.4 we switched
the development model by introducing new non-substantial features directly
within 4.4 maintenance releases.
So, right now we're missing substantial features to be planned to justify a
new 4.5 version.
You're welcome to join and contribute to help shaping the project's roadmap.

About your second question, it depends on what your use case is. oVirt is
still providing the enterprise scale virtualization platform solution it is
known for and currently there's no change in the Red Hat's support of the
oVirt project.

Having installed oVirt 4.4.4 HCI 3 node cluster, the Grafana 'Monitoring

It appears that Grafana is installed but not configured.
I have checked a 4.4.3 environment and it is installed and running, so is this
a bug with 4.4.4.7-1.el8?

[ovirt-users] Performance issue to retrieve VM's after upgrading engine from 4.2 to 4.3

2021-01-25 Thread Jonas Lindholm
This is a weird issue.
Before upgrading it took 8-9 seconds to retrieve all VM's, 1230, using
/ovirt-engine/api/vms URI. After the upgrade it now takes over 2 minutes.
Query other items such as hosts, clusters, data centers etc is fast and the
same speed as prior the upgrade from 4.2 to 4.3
I don't know if this is DB related or jboss related but any clue where to start
to dig deeper is welcome.
I also built a new VM and restored the DB's and ran engine-setup, but that new
engine also gets more or less exactly the same response times for the VM's
using the restAPI.

I have another engine with same version 4.3.10.4-1, That only have 261 VMs but
those are retrieved within 1-2 seconds only so I don't understand how that
engine is so much faster than the one I upgraded.
The UI also has the same long response times to show VM's from Compute ->
Virtual Machines

Any idea what could cause this?

It is highly recommended (well actually all devs will say required)
that you have a separate datastore for the HostedEngine and no VMs
should be hosted there.
That's why the cockpit deployment is creating a dedicated volume.

verify the gluster volume options (gluster volume info  ;

Ovirt can import VMs and templates from any storage it has previously
created. The only hicup is when you have your VM split between storage
domains (for example disk1 - storage1, disk2 - storage2) , but there
are workarounds for that too.
Stream is still buggy and I'm considering using RHEL 8 with the new DEV
subscription.

[ovirt-users] HCI Deployment via Ansible

2021-01-25 Thread penguin pages

I am trying to teach myself new and better means to deploy and control oVirt
and HCI deployment.

Does anyone have notes, experience and or examples.. website etc.. where
someone managed deployment and admin of HCI deployment (CentOS + Cockpit +
gluster + oVirt) and instead of using shell and manaual / gui deployment, did
this "Infrastructure as code"

Ex Step 1:
1) Foundation with kickstart. three nodes with "minimal install" all with ssh
keyless password login for user "ansible"
2) Keys exchanged between nodes for keyless login for root and ansible user
3) Using ansible publish HCI deployment playbook.
-> Define drive for each host to use
-> Define name and host / ip of engine
-> install HCI engine with gluster
-> Add SSH keys for ansible and access so future oVirt interaction can be
done via ansible

I am just starting to research this.. but hoping others have blazed this path
and I can leverage their process.

Concerns:
1) How to get HCI to deploy only engine layer on (in my case... 512GB SSD ..
with VDO and avoid destroying VMS not related to engine).. aka if I have to
repair engine again will it keep nuking the volumes "data" and "vmstore"
volumes which I think the HCI deployment wants to do if it has to redeploy
fresh.
2) If above is always to be an issue .. can I make default VM deployment be a
dedicated gluster volume (my case is 1TB SSD with VDO in each server) such that
rebuild of engine layer can just slurp back in the VMs from that volume.

[ovirt-users] Geographically-distrbuted Ovirt Cluster?

2021-01-25 Thread Derek Atkins
Hi,

Right now I run a 1-server hyperconverged hosted-engine deployment. Other
than requiring systemwide downtime to perform host maintenance, it has
worked fairly well for me over the past few years. However, after a
couple power and upstream-network outages, there have been questions about
the ability to "distribute the load", so to speak. Considering what our
workload is (main git repo, wiki, email list + archives, etc), it can't
easily be distributed by a periodic resync and DNS round robin like a
static web site.

To solve this distribution problem I was wondering if there might be some
way to deploy a handful of physical servers in different geographic
locations that work together to create an HE environment for guest VMs?

My initial fear would be that it would require dedicated 1Gb (or higher)
between the sites to move data? Let's say we do NOT have that level of
connectivity.

I saw something about geographic replication in Gluster? But that would
seem to be more about replicating a local cluster to a remote cluster?

I suspect the answer is: no, a cluster must all be physically co-located.
But I figured I would ask the experts.

Thanks all for your insights.

-derek

[ovirt-users] Is there a plan for ovirt 4.5 and furture versions?

2021-01-25 Thread Flashbang
We know that at this time of the past years, the beta version of the new ovirt
version has been released, but this year there is still no news about ovirt
4.5. Red Hat has announced last year that ovirt and openstack will be
integrated with openshift in the future. So, will there be ovirt 4.5 or ovirt
4.6? Is it worth building a new virtualization platform based on ovirt?

[ovirt-users] Re: New setup - Failing to Activate storage domain on NFS shared storage

2021-01-25 Thread Nir Soffer
On Mon, Jan 25, 2021 at 12:33 AM Matt Snow wrote:

I reproduced the issue with ubuntu server 20.04 nfs server.

The root cause is this setting in /etc/default/nfs-kernel-server:
RPCMOUNTDOPTS="--manage-gids"

Looking at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nfs-utils/+bug/1454112
it seems that the purpose of this option is to ignore client groups, which
breaks ovirt.

After removing this option:
RPCMOUNTDOPTS=""

And restarting nfs-kernel-server service, creating storage domain works.

You can check with Ubuntu folks why they are enabling this configuration
by default, and if disabling it has any unwanted side effects.
