[ovirt-users] [Discussion] Office Hours for oVirt Community
All: There has been some discussion lately of dropping the weekly status/sync meeting on Wednesdays in favor of a less formal set of IRC office hour sessions. The current suggestion is that these office hours will be held for set half-hour periods, moderated by a rotation of community members. Discussions should be open, answering all questions and discussing any cross-team/community-wide issues as needed. Tentatively, these would be held twice a week, Tuesdays and Thursdays. Probably one set for an optimal West Asia/Europe time slot, and another more suited for North and South America. Ideally, a potential third meeting time would help cover East Asia and Australia. Thoughts on this are welcome... we would like to move forward with the new format in May. Peace, Brian ___ Users mailing list Users@ovirt.org http://lists.ovirt.org/mailman/listinfo/users

Any medium we evaluate has to be publicly available, or it is of little use to the oVirt community. http://lists.ovirt.org/pipermail/users/2014-April/023399.html :-) Mailing lists can work, but we have to get around the problem of missed threads. The very fact that this thread went answered by just one person in the six days it has been live is evidence that threads on high-traffic mailing lists can get missed. Or consciously ignored. Encouraging people to attend a real-time synchronous meeting with a regular cadence can avoid that problem. Projects that get larger often split their mailing lists along the way. The real problem will be to split at the right place - to define the role of each list in a way that will make it very clear to people that want to post, what's the best list to use. This isn't easy at all. OTOH, if we have, say, discussion@, and keep the existing users@ and devel@, and someone posts to users@, and I think it should attract people on discussion@, it's much easier to move the discussion there, instead of starting to think who specifically I might want to Cc so that they notice. [snip] -- Didi Adding a new mailing list is possible, though I think that the parsing of which kind of discussion goes on what list might ultimately lead to confusion. Plus, there is a very real notion that the more channels people have to watch, the more chance there is that something will get missed. That's part of why we consolidated the various development-oriented mailing lists into [devel] last year in the first place. What do you think should be the goal of the weekly meeting? How can we improve it? Is a newsletter a good enough update? I think a newsletter can replace the current sync format. [snip] I have been thinking about this over the weekend, and I want to get my two cents in for a possible solution before the meeting tomorrow. Ironically, I will be unable to attend the weekly sync on April 15 due to a doctor's appointment for my daughter... but this in no way reflects that I am not taking the weekly meetings seriously. I agree that in their current format, the weekly meetings can best be served by a newsletter format. An Etherpad could work, too, though I am concerned that it may fall out of date, since such rolling documents can get stale and a weekly newsletter would be deadline-oriented and thus less likely to be missed or ignored by contributors. You will note that I stated in their current format. I still firmly believe that it is imperative we have some kind of real-time public meeting for any interested members of the oVirt community. We often lament that there is a lack of outside contributions into oVirt. Closing the door on one way for users and developers to reach the rest of the oVirt community is a step away from being open. Mailing lists are not always enough. But if the meeting has turned into a weekly status report, then perhaps that is not serving the broader community as well, either. What I suggest, then, is a series of office hours, where a rotating set of oVirt team members will commit to being on IRC to answer questions and be generally available. This could be done by one or two people, a few times a week/once a week, and not even a whole hour. Once a schedule is figured out, it would be posted and people would be openly encouraged to participate. This would be an open session on IRC... support questions, contributor inquiries, and just general commentary. It may be quiet sometimes, and sometimes it could be contentious, but the important thing would be that the community would know the office hours are there and they can use the time to address their questions directly to the oVirt team. This would reduce the requirement to attend a weekly IRC meeting by many people, but, if spread out a bit, will actually increase formal presence on the IRC channel. I hope this suggestion is something that can help. I recognize that we all can use an hour of our lives back from yet-another-meeting, but the importance of real-time availability cannot be understated. I am not set on what the format/structure of such a public meeting should be, but we need to think about: * What do we want to achieve? * What decisions are we going to make? * What is the role of the attendees? * Who gets what out of the meeting? One way to conduct such meetings could be the stakeholder/observer model from agile development meetings, otherwise known as the chicken and the pig model[1]. This would essentially be a variation of what we do know, with statuses given by stakeholders and questions reserved at the end for observers and participants. But people can at anytime ask to be upgraded to stakeholder status for that meeting. I think that curating weekly meetings and saying here are the issues that will be discussed and keeping those issues interesting could be a way to go. [ovirt-users] Want to Be Mentor?
oVirt is pleased to announce it will be participating in the May-August 2015 round of Outreachy, organized by the GNOME Foundation, Software Freedom Conservancy, and Red Hat. Outreachy helps women (cis and trans) and genderqueer get involved in free and open source software. The program provides a supportive community for beginning to contribute any time throughout the year and offers focused internship opportunities twice a year with a number of free software organizations. If anyone has a project they'd like to add to the list of ideas at[1], there is still time. Applications will open tomorrow. Right now we are confirmed for at least one intern, but there should be funding for at least one more. Thanks! [ovirt-users] [GSoC] Announcing the 2015 Google Summer of Code!
Hey, oVirt Community! Though there was some question regarding oVirt's eligibility in the 2015 Google Summer of Code, it turns out that we *are* eligible to apply for the program again. Applications for potential mentoring organizations are now open and are due at 1100 PST (1900 UTC) on Feb. 20, 2015. http://www.google-melange.com/gsoc/homepage/google/gsoc2015 As with last year, we would need to come up with projects for students to work on. The projects can be different skill levels, and they can be modular. They should also be doable within eight weeks in a summer with mentor help. If you are interested in mentoring such a project, visit http://google-opensource.blogspot.com/2015/02/mentoring-organization-applications-now.html for more information, then come to http://www.ovirt.org/Summer_of_Code so we can coordinate ideas prior to submitting to Google. Given the issues from last summer, it is very important that all mentors be very familiar with project deadlines. [ovirt-users] [Event] 2015 oVirt Asia Workshop
As oVirt strives to become the best open source and comprehensive data center virtualization management suite, and its community rapidly evolves and grows, one of the ways its vibrant community connects is through our Global Workshops. The events are conducted solely to introduce new users and veteran oVirt admins to new features and new techniques found in oVirt, as well as provide a forum for our users to connect directly with the development team behind oVirt. With that in mind, we are pleased to announce that registration is now open for the 2014 oVirt Workshop! The next 2015 oVirt workshop will be co-located with the FOSSAsia in Singapore on March 14, 2015. This workshop is designed to encourage collaboration in our community, lay the foundation for best practices in oVirt use, convey end-user stories, and help answer questions about the project from both a developer and user's perspective. For more information, and to register for the event, visit the Workshop page[1] today! Re: [ovirt-users] ovirt presentation template -- google docs format?
I was thinking that we could have a darker-themed template, possibly based on the background wallpaper for oVirt Live. Instead of dead center, the oVirt logo could be set in the upper-left or -right corner. Any PatternFly-influenced touches (fonts, colors, etc) would be nice as well. [ovirt-users] [New Documentation] oVirt User Guide (Please Review!)
I would like to announce the posting of a new page on the oVirt site: the oVirt User Guide[1]. I know what you're thinking: didn't we just release the oVirt Administration Guide? Why, indeed we did[2]! But this was a shorter document, and so did not take as long to convert. This guide, adapted to MediaWiki form with the help of Red Hat's Content Services team, should be up to date as of oVirt 3.4. But, it is a living document and, like the Administration Guide, it needs further review! I ask everyone to take start poking at this documentation once oVirt 3.5 is released and people get familiar with the new release, so as to identify procedures that have changed, and new features that must be added. Please use Bugzilla to assign bugs in these document to me, or, if you have wiki privileges, edit as needed. Up next: a revised Quick Start Guide to get people launched into oVirt as fast as possible. [ovirt-users] Registration Now Open for the oVirt Workshop, Oct. 16!
With that in mind, we are pleased to announce that registration is now open for the 2014 oVirt Workshop[1]! The 2014 oVirt workshop will be co-located with the KVM Forum[2] in Düsseldorf, Germany[3]on October 16, 2014. This workshop is designed to encourage collaboration in our community, lay the foundation for best practices in oVirt use, convey end-user stories, and help answer questions about the project from both a developer and user's perspective. [ovirt-users] [Speaking Opportunity] Central PA Open Source Conference 2014
If anyone in the eastern Pennsylvania/New Jersey area is interested, the oVirt community has been personally invited to have a speaker attend CPOSC on Nov. 1 in Lancaster, PA. Unfortunately I cannot attend, as I will be traveling that day. But this is a great opportunity to speak to a green-field audience about oVirt and what it can do. If you would like to give a talk about your favorite datacenter management platform, visit the CFP page at http://www.cposc.org/ and post a proposal. (Ignore the Sept. 10 deadline; oVirt is assured a slot.) If you do want to present, we can send you presentation materials to use for an overview talk, so let me know! Re: [ovirt-users] Why Ovirt do not have - User community Forum
Chandrahasa: (Apologies for the delayed reply, I was on vacation.) This is an ongoing debate in the oVirt community. On the one hand, a forum would lend itself well to the benefits you describe, but on the other hand, the community has grown comfortable with the mailing list format. We have considered both, but separate channels could divert attention away from either channel. Currently, we are exploring an upcoming Mailman 3 tool, known as hyperkitty, which should enable using the mailing list content much more like a forum. This *should* give us the kind of access you are describing. [ovirt-users] [Documentation] Assistance Needed with User-Facing Documentation
All: The Red Hat ECS team has made a great effort to convert some of the more important downstream documentation to a MediaWiki format that we can post on oVirt.org as an official set of user- and admin-facing documentation. This is being done as a bootstrapping effort to get our upstream documentation up to date and take a big step towards making the upstream documentation the canonical source for documentation in the near future. Before that can happen, we need to get this RHEV-oriented information ported over to oVirt nomenclature and screenshots taken for oVirt and added to the documents as well. I have placed the three guides * Administration Guide[1] * User's Guide[2] * Installation Guide[3] on the oVirt site as unlinked pages. General wording has been changed from RHEV to oVirt, but not always. Each of these documents must be reviewed and completely adapted to oVirt 3.4 before they can be posted as official documentation. Specifically: * Review all text to ensure proper steps and descriptions for oVirt features and procedures * Review all text to remove downstream-specific text * Review all code for changes in package names on on-screen displays * Replace all downstream RHEV screenshots with upstream oVirt 3.4 screenshots (Max width: 1024px) I will be stepping through these documents to edit them in more detail under these guidelines, but help is most assuredly needed, in order to get this done in a timely manner. oVirt.org wiki users can visit these pages, review them, and add their changes. MediaWiki has limited version control, so it would be best to edit sections instead of entire documents, to minimize stepping on others' changes. Editing by section will also help us track the sections that have been edited, using the pages' histories. Thank you in advance for all of your help on this project... when finished, this will represent a significant improvement to oVirt's documentation, and make oVirt that much easier to use. If there is any part of this methodology that is in error, feedback is very much appreciated. You should know that since we now have a mirrorlist (which in terms of hit count is already in the top 3) the number could be much lower than the actual RPM downloads. I'd be interested how much traffic is served by mirrors. ___ Users mailing list Users@ovirt.org http://lists.ovirt.org/mailman/listinfo/users

[ovirt-users] Stats for oVirt Downloads: Jan-May 2014
All: For some time, traffic statistics for the sites in the ovirt.org domain (lists, resources, gerrit, and linode01) have been collected and organized using awstats[1] at stats.ovirt.org[2]. From the data provided for resources, I have been able to put together what should be a fairly definitive set of statistics for software downloads within the oVirt Project. Methodology The statistics that were analyzed were for five parts of the project: * Engine * Live * Node * Engine Reports * Engine dwh Downloads of the Engine RPM file, it was determined, would be indicative of actual oVirt installs. The allinone RPMs were not analyzed at this time, since installing this RPM is a choice made during the installation process itself. Tracking the Engine Reports and dwh RPMs was done to determine the popularity of these two tools and to ensure their numbers were comparable. To count downloads, data was gathered each month that listed the total downloads of every file, a number derived from the total hits each file had, minus any 206 hits, which indicated incomplete downloads. Key files for Engine, Engine Reports, and Engine dwh were identified and the data filtered to include counts for each one of the files, in whatever version released. Tracking of Live and Node RPMs was already set up within the awstats reporting, and was taken directly from awstats in each month. If there is any part of this methodology that is in error, feedback is very much appreciated. Presentation of Data Data was aggregated using Pivot Tables in Google Docs, and the application of SUMIFS functions in the same spreadsheet document. This document is still being formatted into a more presentable form, but until then, I wanted to deliver some preliminary results to the community for the first five months of the year. It will be noted that in general, download numbers are on the rise, particularly around the time oVirt 3.4 was released. There are significant gaps in downloads of Engine Reports and Engine dwh. I am still investigating the cause of this lack of data. Engine Jan 5815 Feb 4251 Mar 1980 Apr 10509 May 12043 Engine Reports Jan 0 Feb 1209 Mar 0 Apr 10282 May 9647 Engine dwh Jan 0 Feb 603 Mar 0 Apr 9974 May 10311 Live Jan 845 Feb 757 Mar 739 Apr 1981 May 1187 Node Jan 95 Feb 757 Mar 739 Apr 1981 May 1187 Thanks for Alon Bar-Lev and Michael Scherer for their invaluable assistance with this data gathering and reporting. Not really hardware, but a software solution that would be a little more robust than the current LiveUSB version. But what's key to this discussion is, what features of oVirt should be highlighted for a self-guided demo? Joop, you've done demos in the past, what features did you highlight? [ovirt-users] Vote for oVirt ad on Stack Overflow!
For those of you with memberships to Stack Overflow, the site is hosting free vote-based advertisements for getting contributors for open source projects. The program will feed live remnant ads on Stack Overflow if an ad gets enough votes. oVirt has had an ad created [1] (thanks to Tuomas Kuosmanen!) that can be voted on by Stack Overflow members. For fairness' sake, feel free to vote for any of the other projects you like [2]. I would also like to thank Allon Mureinik for pointing out this opportunity and using his Stack Overflow credentials to get the ad posted! [ovirt-users] Fwd: Say Hello to the oVirt Engine Virtual Appliance
Big news from the Node crew! BKP - Forwarded Message - From: Fabian Deutsch fdeut...@redhat.com To: de...@ovirt.org Sent: Monday, June 16, 2014 7:00:26 AM Subject: Say Hello to the oVirt Engine Virtual Appliance Hey, one of the things on the list for oVirt 3.5 was the oVirt Virtual Appliance. Huh, what’s that? You might ask. Well, imagine a cloud image with oVirt Engine 3.5 and it’s dependencies pre-installed, and a sane default answer file for ovirt-engine-setup. All of this delivered in an OVA file. The intention is to get you a running oVirt Engine without much hassle. Furthermore this appliance can be used in conjunction with - and is actually intended for - the Self Hosted Engine feature, and the upcoming oVirt Node Hosted Engine plugin. More informations and links about the appliance and how to build it can be found here: http://dummdida.tumblr.com/post/88944206100/say-hello-to-the-ovirt-engine-virtual-appliance Testing it with hosted engine is the next step. Re: [ovirt-users] oVirt All-In-One instructions for presentation?
Not at this time, but I will want to draw some up. A brief outline that I have in mind is: 1) Introduction to oVirt GUI 2) Setting up a VM 3) Managing Multiple VMs 4) Enable user procurement of VMs Since it's the all in one LiveUSB version, we can't show the live migration feature, which is too bad. Are there other features we should add? Not to harp, but setting up a demo will be easier if we know what we are working with. Hi Brian, It would be fantastic if you could rework this topic into a lab. You do not need to be present. Just put together a one or two page 'worksheet' that walks Lab attendees through oVirt. If you like, you could also sign up for an 'office hours' timeslot, where you could discuss oVirt with Lab attendees and assist them with the worksheet. So it sounds like it can be any length. This is something attendees will come into the lab and try on their own time. Hi, I submitted a tutorial proposal to LISA '14 called Hands-on with oVirt, but it was rejected. However, we can still get oVirt in front of people if we rework it as a lab. Basically a lab is just a one or two sheet set of instructions that would describe to someone how to test out oVirt All-In-One in the LISA lab. I know there have been demos of oVirt all-in-one at other conferences. Does anyone have a list of presentation-friendly instructions that he/she could share? Thanks! Greg PS -- Actually -- the 'demo' doesn't have to be all-in-one, but I was thinking that would be easiest given the unknown lab hardware at LISA. If the lab is very powerful, I suppose attendees could try to setup separate nodes. I'll try to find out lab details. Greg Sheremeta Red Hat, Inc. Sr. Software Engineer, RHEV Cell: 919-807-1086 gsher...@redhat.com Greg: We still may be able to help. How long of a lab would this need to be? I agree the all-in-one might be the best option; we could also use the LiveUSB version to let oVirt run without a hard install. BKP
