[ovirt-users] Ovirt setup

2019-05-15 Thread Bryan Sockel
Hi,

I am getting an error attempting to install ovirt on a pair of bonded nics.
The error that we are getting is Cannot acquire nic/bridge address.

We typically run all our servers with an active/backup setup.

[ovirt-users] OVN Deployment

2019-03-06 Thread Bryan Sockel
Hi,

I am looking to implement OVN with in my setup, but could use some guidance
on the implementation. As part of the implementation i am planning on
moving from engine being installed on a physical server to running as a VM
with in my environment.

I do not need to retain any historical data. The plan would be to import
the vm's into a new deployment of oVirt after getting everything setup.
Currently i have a single host i plan on using for the initial deployment,
but as vm's are moved over, i will be adding additional hosts.

With the deployment of oVirt 4.3.x the ovn provider is installed correctly.
Is there a problem with installing the OVN Controller on the Hosted Engine?

Has any one found a good guide for setting up and deploying ovn in an oVirt
hosted-engine environment?

Thank You,

[ovirt-users] Network Performance Issues

2019-02-07 Thread Bryan Sockel
Hi,

I currently have a 4 node ovirt cluster running. Each node is configured with
an active passive network setup, with each link being 10 GB. After looking
over my performance metrics collected via observium. I am noticing the network
traffic rarely exceeds 100 MB. I am noticing this across all four of my
servers and my 2 storage arrays that are also connected via the same 10 GB
links.

What is the best way to trouble shoot this problem?

Thanks

Hi Bryan,

i expect a hardware problem.

Have all your servers ECC ram ?

In the past I had a PC (without ECC RAM) and without ovirt,
which regularly produced a defective data block when transferring
an 8GB gzip file with rsync. The error position in file was randomly, but
the defective stored block on disc has always only the first 128 bytes
scrambled.

You see, something like this can happen without any messages or anything
like that.
I didn't investigate further whether the cause was the network card, the RAM
or
the drive path or the switch port. But it was clearly reproducible!

Re: [ovirt-users] NIC Bonding

2017-11-16 Thread Bryan Sockel
Understood. Our typical server deployment is primary network link to one
switch and back up link to a second switch. This allows for my network
admin to do switch maintenance with out any down time. So in our ovirt
deployment we have bonded link for one server going to switch 1 and on
server 2 we have a bonded link going to switch 2. We have to manually put
the server in maintenance mode before he could do any switch maintenance.
If there was an actual switch outage, we would have to wait for the system
to restart the HA VM's on the other server.

I know there are ways on the switch side that we can make both switches
appear as a single switch and possibly create a bond across switches, but
that is not something we have implemented.

I would argue that such a setup is problematic. The bond link goes down only
when all its slaves are down, therefore, if you loose one slave, the BW is
decreased and the backup will not take over.
Using 3 or 4 slaves bond can allow you to get both increased BW and
redundancy.

In your output if you see the -drive file=gluster:///
this means that vm disk drives are being accessed using libgfapi.

If it is fuse then you would have seen something like

The only command I tried was engine-config -s LibgfApiSupported=true but the
result is what is shown in my output below, so it’s set to true for v4.2.
Is it enough?
I’ll try restarting the engine. Is it really needed to stop all the VMs
and restart them all? Of course this is a test setup and I can do it, but
for production clusters in the future it may be a problem.
Thanks,

   Alessandro

My test setup has an external glusterfs cluster v3.12, not managed by oVirt.

The compatibility flag is correctly showing gfapi should be enabled with
4.2:

# engine-config -g LibgfApiSupported
LibgfApiSupported: false version: 3.6
LibgfApiSupported: false version: 4.0
LibgfApiSupported: false version: 4.1
LibgfApiSupported: true version: 4.2

The data center and cluster have the 4.2 compatibility flags as well.

However, when starting a VM with a disk on gluster I can still see the disk
is mounted via fuse.

Any clue of what I'm still missing?

Thanks,

[ovirt-users] Issue migrating hard drive to new vm store

2017-11-14 Thread Bryan Sockel
Having an issue moving a hard disk from one vm data store new a newly
created gluster data store. I can shut down the machine and copy the hard
drive, detach the old hard drive and attach the new hard drive, but i would
prefer to keep the vm on line when moving the disk.

I have attached a portion of the vdsm.log file.

Thanks

Re: [ovirt-users] Enabling libgfapi disk access with oVirt 4.2

2017-11-14 Thread Bryan Sockel
Hrm, not sure what i am doing wrong then, does not seem to be working for
me. I am not using the hosted engine, but a direct install on a physical
server. I thought i have enabled support for libgfapi with this command:

# engine-config -g LibgfApiSupported
LibgfApiSupported: false version: 3.6
LibgfApiSupported: false version: 4.0
LibgfApiSupported: true version: 4.1

restarted the engine, shutdown the vm completely and started it back up a
short time later.

I am using this command to check:
ps ax | grep qemu | grep 'file=gluster\|file=/rhev'

Output is
 file=gluster://10.20.102.181/gl-vm12/

Thanks

When I tried restarting the VMs they are still not using gfapi, so it does
not seem to help.
Cheers,

Hello!
I'm new(-ish) to oVirt and have a question regarding network.

I currently use vmware, the hosts have 4 nic each and connected to two
switches in stack(extreme), i have two vSwitch with two nic each setup in
active/standby, with this i don't have to do anything with the physical
switch.

So how do i do this setup on oVirt so i don't need to configure the
switches?
I know how to bond the cards, but i am afraid of a switchloop, so i just
want to make sure that does not happen.

[ovirt-users] Storage Performance

2017-10-25 Thread Bryan Sockel
Have a question in regards to storage performance. I have a gluster replica
3 volume that we are testing for performance. In my current configuration
is 1 server has 16X1.2TB( 10K 2.5 Inch) drives configured in Raid 10 with a
256k stripe. My 2nd server is configured with 4X6TB (3.5 Inch Drives)
configured Raid 10 with a 256k stripe. Each server is configured with 802.3
Bond (4X1GB) network links. Each server is configured with write-back on
the raid controller.

I am seeing a lot of network usage (solid 3 Gbps) when i perform file copies
on the vm attached to that gluster volume, But i see spikes on the disk io
when watching the dashboard through the cockpit interface. I spikes are up
to 1.5 Gbps, but i would say the average through put is maybe 256 Mbps.

Is this to be expected, or should it be a solid activity in the graphs for
disk IO. Is it better to use a 256K stripe or a 512 strip on the hardware
raid configuration?

Eventually i plan on having the hardware match up for better performance.

Thanks

Re: [ovirt-users] VM/Template copy issue

2017-06-02 Thread Bryan Sockel
This happening to a number of vm's. All vm's are running and can be
stopped and re started. We can read and write data within the vm.

All vms are currently running on a single node gluster file system. I
am attempting to migrate to a replica 3 gluster file system when i
exprience these issues. The problem always seems to happen when
finalizing the move or copy.

If it makes a difference the gluster storage we are coping to and from
are dedicated storage servers.

Can you verify those disks are indeed valid? Can you IO to them while

Hey,

I am having an issue moving/copying vm's and templates around in my ovirt
environment. I am getting the following error in my VDSM Logs:

"2017-06-01 01:01:54,425-0500 ERROR (jsonrpc/5) [storage.Dispatcher]
{'status': {'message': "Storage domain does not exist:
(u'97258ca6-5acd-40c7-a812-b8cac02a9621',)", 'code': 358}} (dispatcher:77)"

I believe this started when i destroyed a data domain instead of removing
the domain correctly. I have since then rebuilt my ovirt environment,
importing my gluster domains back into my new setup.

I believe the issue is related to some stale metadata on my gluster storage
servers somewhere but do not know how to remove it or where it exists.

I found these two posts that seem to deal with the same problem i am seeing.

https://access.redhat.com/solutions/180623
and
https://access.redhat.com/solutions/2355061

Currently running 2 dedicated gluster servers and 2 Ovirt VM hosts servers,
one is acting as an arbiter for my replica 3 gluster file system.

All hosts are running CentOS Linux release 7.3.1611 (Core)

ok, so those numbers are not bad. just to check, can you please verify same
test from x server to vm? (server different than host vm please ).

Hi Juan,

Currently we are seeing the lag/delay in the VM's. The slowness comes from
when we access applications from the network vs. locally. For instance
Putty opens quickly when run locally, but when run from the network it may
take a minute or so to launch.

I am watching the Nload graph on the physical server and not seeing
any/minimal traffic go out on the vlan the vm is running on.

I am attempting to create a template on a storage domain that does currently
exist in my environment. How would i remove the reference to this storage
domain so it is not used?

For what it's worth I set up my bond0 manually on CentOS before
installing
ovirt hosted engine and the ovirtmgmt bridge "took over" from bond0..
But
it appears to still be working. At least I've not noticed links being
down, and "ifconfig" shows decent amount of traffic on both eno1 and
eno2.

Maybe wipe, re-install, configure it manually, and then install ovirt?

Re: [ovirt-users] LACP Bonding issue

2017-04-20 Thread Bryan Sockel
We checked the port groups, and servers are cabled correctly.

After server is rebooted, em1 is the only interface passing traffic.
Other 3 nics sitting idle. We can down each port on the switch and
confirm it is down on the server.

I am pretty sure it is related to the bridge that was created to pass
vm-host-altn traffic when the appliance was first installed.

Are you sure the switch side is all the same LACP group? Sounds like
one port may accidentally be in a separate group, and that happens to be
em1.

You might try swapping wires between em1 and another port and reboot and
see which ports come up - if all but the port with the wire formerly in
em1 come up, it points to the switch config.

Re: [ovirt-users] LACP Bonding issue

2017-04-20 Thread Bryan Sockel

After further testing we can either get EM1 running on the bond or EM2 - EM4
running in the bond, but not EM1-EM4. We are running the Hosted Engine
Appliance in our setup. In order to install the appliance, i have to point
it to a physical nic during the install process. The install process
creates the network bridge ovirtmgmt which is tied to interface EM1 on both
servers. After i finished setting up the appliance, and both of my hosts, i
went in and created my bond so i could configure LACP.

It seems that is some disconnect between my network bridge, the bond and my
interfaces. I would like to some how get my bond to use all 4 interfaces.
On reboot, it always seems to reset consistently to EM1.

You should configure your LAG with this options (custom mode on oVirt):

mode=4 miimon=100 xmit_hash_policy=2 lacp_rate=1

An tell to your network admin configure switch:
"Give me lacp timeout short with channel-group mode active. Also set
port-channel load-balance src-dst-mac-ip (or src-dst-ip\src-dst-mac)".

You also need to understand that LACP balancing works 'per flow'. You can
take 2 hosts and run "iperf -c xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx -i 0.1 -d",
and on one phy interface you should see 1Gb RX, and on another phy interface
1Gb TX.

Hi,

I discovered an issue with my LACP configuration and i am having trouble
figuring it out. I am running 2 Dell Powered 610's with 4 broadcomm nics.
I am trying to bond them together, however only one of the nics goes active
no mater how much traffic i push across the links.

I have spoken to my network admin, and says that the switch ports are
configured and can only see one active link on the switch.

Thanks

Re: [ovirt-users] Best Storage Option: iSCSI/NFS/GlusterFS?

2017-04-19 Thread Bryan Sockel
Thank you for the information, i did check my servers this morning, in total
i have 4 servers configured as part of my ovirt deployment, two
virtualization servers and 2 gluster servers, with one of the virtualization
being the arbiter for my gluster replicated storage.

>From what i can see on my 2 dedicated gluster boxes i see traffic going out
over multiple links. On both of my virtualization hosts i am seeing all
traffic go out via em1, and no traffic going out over the other interfaces.
All four interfaces are configured in a single bond as 802.3ad on both hosts
with my logical networks attached to the bond.

I'd expect Gluster to take advantage of LACP, as it has replication to
multiple peers (as opposed to NFS). See[1].

NFS 4.2 is better than NFS 3 in the sense that you'll get DISCARD support,

Gluster probably requires 3 servers.
In most cases, I don't think people see the difference in performance

practice, most don't get to those limits where it matters really.

Our servers will be using a 1G network backbone for regular traffic and a
dedicated 10G backbone with LACP for redundancy and extra bandwidth for
storage traffic if that makes a difference.

LCAP many times (especially on NFS) does not provide extra bandwidth, as the
(single) NFS connection tends to be sticky to a single physical link.
It's one of the reasons I personally prefer iSCSI with multipathing.

I'll probably try to do some performance benchmarks with 2-3 options, but
the reliability issue is a little harder to test for. Has anyone had any
particularly bad experiences with a particular storage option? We have been
using iSCSI with a Dell MD3x00 SAN and have run into a bunch of issues with
the multipath setup, but that won't be a problem with the new SAN since it's
only got a single controller interface.

A single controller is not very reliable. If reliability is your primary
concern, I suggest ensuring there is no single point of failure - or at
least you are aware of all of them (does the storage server have redundant
power supply? to two power sources? Of course in some scenarios it's an
overkill and perhaps not practical, but you should be aware of your weak
spots).

I'd stick with what you are most comfortable managing - creating, backing
up, extending, verifying health, etc.

Re: [ovirt-users] Setting up hosted engine appliance on a bonded interface

I was able to get around this by dropping one of the nics out of the bond,
and have the switch port reconfigured for a standard vlan, ran the setup and
reconfigured network and re establish the bond.

Is it possible to deploy an appliance to a network bond? My Network guy has
configured my ports in the switch so i can connect via bonded links.
however, if the interfaces are not bonded, it will suspend the links.

With LACP & bonding mode 4 (the type of bonding you configure with a
switch), you *can* configure the link to be suspended if one of the member
ports are down, however that would only be desired in very specific edge
cases. I see no reason why you should be using such a configuration.
LACP is usually used to provide both aggregated bandwidth & port redundancy.
If one of the member ports fail, then the link is maintained with the
aggregated bandwidth of the remaining links. You don't even need the bond
configured on both sides, if you only configure it on one side, then the
ports fall back to individual/non-aggregated mode (although some
manufacturers only permit that in passive mode, not active mode).

If your bond is configured as you say, then I suggest you ask your network
guy to reconfigure the bond - you lose link redundancy at absolutely no
benefit.

[ovirt-users] Network issues

2017-02-10 Thread Bryan Sockel
Need some help. I was doing some work on one of my ovirt hosts, removed it
from cluster, and re-added it to the cluster to bring it back into my
working cluster. I got a messege that my network's where out of sync. I
accidentally sync'd up my working network, now neither of my hosts will
bring launch my hosted engine appliance. While machines aren't currently
mission critical, i do need to get these machines backup up and running.

The network configuration is supposed to be 6 nics forming a bond network,
my vlan's hanging off that bond, including my ovirtmgmt network.

[ovirt-users] Host Issue

2017-02-02 Thread Bryan Sockel
Hi,

Came into the office with an issue with my ovirt setup this morning. On one
of my hosts the / partition was completely full causing the host to go into
an unknown state. I was able to clear out some space for the time being and
attempting to recover my that host. VM's are still running and responding
on the host.

I am using Gluster volumes in my configuration, and had to restart gluster
service on that host. I also restarted the ovirt-ha-agent service.

I am seeing this entry in my agent.log every two seconds:

Is the host device you're trying to pass through on the PCI bus? Is
IOMMU enabled in your bios and kernel? Host requirements section in
[1] could help.

Re: [ovirt-users] Importing VM's from VMware

2016-10-26 Thread Bryan Sockel
The process finished successfully, took about 4 hours per vm, not sure if
this is typical or not, but this being our first test run i was afraid that
it may have stopped and was unsure. I will check the VDSM.log file on the
next test migration i do.

Hi,

during the import process engine shows status like "Initializing",
"Copying disk x/y" and "Finishing" next to the VM.

Could you check in the engine status of the import task? Did it finish
successfully or with an error? You can also check the vdsm.log for any
errors.

Best regards,

Tomas

If you have the need to save in power and in hardware than by all means go
for it and do what fits you...
Compute nodes should be treated as a disposable node, One goes out and you
shouldn't have to worry much about it. The more you "hyperconverge" the
more you are exposing your self to self-inflicted chaos (Complexity). I am
the keep it simple and standard guy... Let the next guy be able to figure
things out without having to pull hairs...

Yes is the new thing, the new "Just DO IT!" In my peace of mind, Storage
stays where it needs to be... On its own world of IOPS and Drives.
I know what it is and where is going. Its just not my cup of tea (For now)

My 2 Centavos.

What is the reason for ? A lot of stuff is moving into Hyperconvergence and

The only thing I would look with more caution is the amount of memory
Gluster itself consumes, but if there are enough resources in each host for
Distributed Storage + Compute stuff I see no problems with that, unless
someone has some strong technical reason for not.

That approach is called hyper-converged.
With 4.0 is still somehow bleeding edge and not recommended for a production
env; a stable solution will come quite early.
If you want start playing with it you can take a look at this article which
exactly covers what you want to do:

[ovirt-users] Networking issues on Hosted Engine Appliance

2016-09-01 Thread Bryan Sockel
Having some issues with my Hosted Engine Appliance, I am able to get it up

internet.

This is a nested setup i am using for testing and poc and is running on a
