Hi Chris,

The fix didn't make it to 3.5, will be available in 3.5.1

Thanks,
Gilad.

- update engine configuration (use ovirt-config --set KEY_NAME=KEY_VALUE):
* ExternalSchedulerServiceURL=http://:18781/
* ExternalSchedulerEnabled=true
- restart ovirt-engine service.
- under configure->cluster_policy see that the balance function was added
(should be in manage policy units- you will see it in the main dialog as well).
- clone current cluster's used cluster policy (probably none - prefer it to
have no balancing modules to avoid conflicts), name it 'your_name' and set it
with the external function
- replace cluster's cluster policy with newly created one (in edit cluster
dialog).

Thanks,
Gilad.

you're right, I'm changing default value to interleave.
for now run the query: update vm_static set numatune_mode ='interleave';

Hi Andy,

According to engine logs, it seems that the VM cannot run on the desired host.

Can you please attach VDSM logs? (/var/log/vdsm/vdsm.log)

Thanks,

not sure I understand, let's take an example
2 hosts: spm: 8 #vms, hsm: 8 #vms.
SPMVMCountGrace = 2.
in this case the 'worst' host will be the SPM... shouldn't we deduct 2 from spm
and not add? we want less noise there.

minimal #vms on host to enable the module (i.e worst host should have more than
HighVMSCount vms).

> * MigrationThreshold - defines a buffer before we start migrating VMs
> from the host ( Not quite grasping. If my High limit is 5 does this mean

don't think that there's any relation with "HighLimit".
It means that migration will happen only if there is a difference of X vms or
more between worst host (source host) to destination host.

let say that you have 2 hosts. one has 10 vms and the second 8. if the
threshold is 3, no migration will happen (10-8 !> 3).

you're right, the SPM host will have current + grace VMs in terms of module
calculations.
I think that this is problematic, it is likely to be selected as worst host
candidate and that's not the wanted behavior iiuc
imo, we should subtract (-) in overloaded hosts and add (+) in underutilized.

Re: [ovirt-users] Is this kind of VM replication possible using oVirt Schedular

2014-06-26 Thread Gilad Chaplik
Hi Kausik,

If I understand correctly your question, we do support this flow.
In case of failure we migrate highly available VMs to other hosts, but note
that there could be a connectivity problem between engine an node, and node can
still communicate with the storage,
so to avoid that (split brain) you need to have PM configured for that node, or
manually confirm that the host has rebooted.

We even added a feature lately (3.4's HA reservation [1]) that indicates
whether your HA VMs have enough resources in cluster in case of a node failure.

Thanks,
Gilad.

Thanks Dave and Oved, that's exactly my thoughts :-)
Adding 2 more videos from that series:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jExFWEojF4c
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y8qUoRImimY

Quota feature didn't change much since 3.1, only got stable, so no worries
about version in the videos.

Andy, if you any questions/suggestions, feel free :-)

Since there are already 3 videos, and the fact we have a new l&f in 3.5,
thinking of doing a new series
(following 'Lord of the Rings' and 'The Hobbit' ;-) ).

Not that strong in luns, but I'd use the search, but I'm not sure isLun is
supported in search (by quick look at the code it isn't).

You can fetch the vm_names from the disk and proceed from there.

Hi Sokratis,

Great that you've managed to handle it, but if it took you time to realize
that, I think it's a bug.
Can you please open one?

AFAIK, the external vm comes from the host- i.e you have a running vm within
the host that wasn't initialized by your particular engine.
Try to destroy it using vdsClient iface in the host.

you config ovirt engine with the ip of the proxy, or I'm missing sth.
ovirt communicates with the proxy and not the other way around.

Hi Sandro,

oVirt RESTful API project's main maintainer is not available, and will be back
(I think) on Monday (6/2).
I personally have 2 pending long going major issues that awaits for him (ack &
merge) for coming feature freeze.

I want my features to slip in 3.5 without breaking any rules, ideas?

Thanks,
Gilad.

Re: [ovirt-users] SLA : RAM scheduling

2014-05-26 Thread Gilad Chaplik
Hi Nathanaël,

happy to assist :) hope it will work in first run:

1) install the proxy and ovirtsdk.
2) put attached file in the right place (according to docs: ".../plugins"),
make sure to edit the file with your ovirt's ip, user@domain and PW.
3) restart proxy service.
3) use config tool to configure ovirt-engine:
* "ExternalSchedulerServiceURL"="http://:18781/"
* "ExternalSchedulerEnabled"=true
4) restart ovirt-engine service.
5) under configure->cluster_policy see that weight function
memory_even_distribution was added (should be in manage policy units or /sth-
you will see it in the main dialog as well).
6) clone/copy currernt cluster's used cluster policy (probably none - prefer it
to have no balancing modules to avoid conflicts), name it 'your_name' and
attach memory_even_distribution weight (you can leave it as the only weight
module in weight section to avoid configuring factors).
7) replace cluster's cluster policy with newly created one.

try it out and let me know how goes :-)

Thanks,
Gilad.

by 3.4, I mean 3.4.x (= anyway for (2) you'll need to upgrade), but not sure it
will make it.

Re: [ovirt-users] SLA : RAM scheduling

2014-05-24 Thread Gilad Chaplik
Hi Nathanaël,

You have 2 ways to get what you're after (quick/slow):
1) install 'oVirt's external scheduling proxy', and write an extremely simple
weight function that orders hosts by used memory, then add that to your cluster
policy.
2) open an RFE for oVirt 3.4 to have that in
(https://bugzilla.redhat.com/enter_bug.cgi?product=oVirt).

let me know if you consider (1), and I'll assist.

anyway I suggest you'll open an RFE for 3.5.

Thanks,
Gilad.

Great!

Notes:
* You need to fill-in whiteboard with 'sla' keyword for any NUMA related bug.
* Once you upload a fix/es, change bug status to POST, and once bug fix/es are
merged in right _product_ and _target release_ change status to MODIFIED.

Please update your colleagues regarding these notes.

If you need anymore clarification, please contact me.

no, they are complementary fixes.

Yair,

You're are raising some good points, but imo the entire host monitoring (inc
getVdsStats, etc.) should be externalized.
There are 2 major issues that we still don't cover:
- No HA for monitoring, who checks the hosts when the engine is down.
- No scale - the engine is a bottle-neck in network and compute.
Although the above is a huge arch change, we need to start somewhere, this
feature sounds like a candidate to introduce it.

About the examples:
http://sixrevisions.com/tools/10-free-server-network-monitoring-tools-that-kick-ass/
The main goal of the feature if my suggestion is taken, is to select to most
appropriate one.

Thanks,
Gilad.

Re: [ovirt-users] oVirt 3.5 : "Power Management Health Check" - feature pages

2014-05-04 Thread Gilad Chaplik
Hi Eli,

Here is my comment :)
Why engine needs to send the status health check, isn't there any 3rd parties
that does it, that we can integrate with?
If found, it probably has /less (known) bugs/more features/ and it's already
written, tested, documented, allows further integration and probably deals with
scale.

btw, fixed some typos in your pages :-)

Thanks,
Gilad.

Re: [Users] ovirt 3.3 vnic profile with bonding & vlans problem

Hi Sven,

disclaimer, not familiar with this feature that much (although I should), looks
like the problem is in libvirt (according to your story).
googling 'outbound libvirt not working' shows that you're not the only one :)

Re: [Users] Affinity Groups

2014-03-31 Thread Gilad Chaplik
Hi Maurice,

We have a bug on it:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/1080515

I'm going to fail the creation of an affinity group if it's violating the
constraints.
will that solve your problem?

Thanks,
Gilad.

Re: [Users] Force certain VMs to be on different hosts

2014-03-31 Thread Gilad Chaplik
Hi Joop,

You've created a positive enforcing affinity group -> means that VMs should
stay on the same host, no migration allowed while more than one VM is up.
What you're requesting is a useful RFE, some-kind of a 'follow me' positive
affinity group.
I'm +1 on that :-) can you please open a formal request/RFE for it?
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/enter_bug.cgi?product=oVirt

Thanks,
Gilad.

Re: [Users] Cant assign Quotas to groups anymore?

2014-03-26 Thread Gilad Chaplik

a proper setup (with domains :)) and reproduce.
cc'ing the current feature owner, Kobi, and I guess that tomorrow we'll be
smarter.

Thanks,
Gilad.

Re: [Users] Cant assign Quotas to groups anymore?

2014-03-26 Thread Gilad Chaplik
Hi Maurice,

I have a question that can speed up things,
can you add any permission in the UI to an external group, i.e. any permission

Thanks,
Gilad.

As far as I know this feature is fully tested and verified for version 3.4.
I'd love for feedback! and would like to assist in anything :)

Hi Scott,

Don't want to get in deep into the thread...
Does Affinity Groups feature what you're after (sounds like negative affinity) ?

Re: [Users] Supported Billing Software for oVirt

2014-03-03 Thread Gilad Chaplik
I'm not aware of this kind of feature...

You can open a RFE, and I hope we'll have the time to add it the upcoming
versions:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/enter_bug.cgi?product=oVirt

There could have been a possibly to write a cron job/similar that manage quotas
externally using oVirt public API, but unfortunately, quotas aren't exposed
there yet (on our TODO list).

BUT (there's always one :-)), you can use quotas^^ for capping, and use
external plugin (external scheduler/ vdsm hook) that responsible for
subscription duration (integrate with 3rd party or write one your self, names
and dates- shouldn't be that hard).

keep me posted :-)

Thanks,
Gilad.

Hi,

Don't know about 3rd parties, but you can use quotas to limit user activities
(storage/memory/cpu consumption).

Check out these clips, and see if it suits you:

Re: [Users] Quotas

2014-02-05 Thread Gilad Chaplik
Hi Maurice,

With quota you can set a hard limit for the number of CPU consumed by the user,
and
by that limit the num of vms, other quota parameters (memory and storage) can
be unlimited.

Although these videos are for version 3.1 they are pretty useful,
since there weren't any drastic change since then:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zazJ_fW05Qk
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y8qUoRImimY

you are more than welcome to send your progress/use-case/any other question :-)

Thanks,
Gilad.

Re: [Users] CustomProperties not being passed when using Run Once

2014-02-01 Thread Gilad Chaplik
tested it out, run once flow doesn't pass any custom property to the hypervisor.
simple workaround:
edit vm -> show advanced options (button) -> custom properties (section)
these properties stick.

anyway as Sven said you can report a bug (good for tracking).

Thanks,
Gilad.

Re: [Users] Cannot add Host. Host with the same address already exists.

2014-01-05 Thread Gilad Chaplik
Hi Matt,

connect to DB and run:
select vds_id from vds_static where host_name = 'HOST_NAME';
I guess these 3 delete queries will cover it:
delete from vds_statistics where vds_id = 'id';
delete from vds_dynamic where vds_id = 'id';
delete from from vds_static where vds_id = 'id';

Can you please provide the engine logs that we'll find out what went wrong?

Thanks,
Gilad.

Hi Karli,

looks like there is already a fix to it for ovirt-3.3
http://gerrit.ovirt.org/#/c/20327 (logging instead of failing).
not sure but you can try and change
osinfo-defaults.properties#os.XXX.resources.minimum.ram.value to 512
and restart engine.

Thanks,

Hi Gianluca,

In oVirt 3.3, the scheduler had some transformation of how we compare hosts for
VM scheduling.
In previous versions the comparisons used to be on real numbers and now we use
weight functions that generates
integers, so somewhere in the rounding up of that numbers, we miss some crucial
fractions that used to compare the hosts better.

opened a bug for it:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/1040460

Thanks for your feedback!

Re: [Users] VM with stateless snapshot won't start

2013-12-05 Thread Gilad Chaplik
hi Martijn,

Indeed we have a bug there, and we've already solved it [1].
As long as you're not using quota, your workaround is great.
If you'll decide to use quota you can contact me and we will see how to proceed.

Thanks, Gilad.

Hi,

we've already solve this issue and it probably be included in the next release.

a simple workaround:

either disable ballooning in the cluster (edit cluster -> Optimization ->
uncheck Enable balloon)
or enable ballooning for the vm (edit vm -> Resource Allocation -> check Memory
Balloon Device Enabled)

Thanks, Gilad.

Hi Gianluca,

When there is no policy selected, we try to sort the VMs according to host CPU
load.
Probably the host data (CPU load) wasn't fetched, and then it selects the
non-spm host (because both of them had zero cpu load).

I we do some testing and get back to you.

Thanks, Gilad.

Re: [Users] Quota for VMs created from templates

2013-10-08 Thread Gilad Chaplik
Hi all,

After investigating it a bit, I've found several bugs in that area :-P
the most significant one is not checking whether the assigned quota can be
consumed by the user,
as you mentioned.

I've proposed a fix for it: http://gerrit.ovirt.org/19994

@Mitja, I really appreciate your effort and time :-)

Thanks,
Gilad.

now it seems like a bug :-) let me just confirm and get back to you.

Thanks Einav.

Mitja,

Compute resources (CPU, RAM) are being consumed when the VM is running.
So yes, you can create how many VMs you'd like as long as you don't exceed
storage limit,
but run VMs only as many as your quota permit (cpu and memory limitations).

The difference between storage to compute resources is that storage is being
consumed when the disks are copied
while memory and cpu consumed when the VM is running.

Thanks,
Gilad.

as a last resort, you can run the following sql statements
1) select vm_guid from vm_static where vm_name = '???'
2) delete from snapshots where vm_id = 'vm_guid' -- vm_guid from 1
3) select DeleteVmStatic('vm_guid') -- vm_guid from 1

A swapping host in most cases have a major impact on VM behavior.
So by default oVirt will not run a VM on a swapping host. this is highly
unrecommended.

Re: [Users] start vm error, because HOST swap is illegal?

2013-03-14 Thread Gilad Chaplik
Hi,

you can avoid this check in the engine by running this db script:
update vdc_options set option_value = false where option_name =
'EnableSwapCheck';
don't forget to restart your jboss.

Thanks,
Gilad.
