Re: [ovirt-users] Cannot delete auto-generated snapshot

2018-02-21 Thread Langley, Robert
I have the server down (the one that was used as the hyperviser when the live
migration was done). I’ll get the logs in about an hour and a half.
I’ll check them first with Log Reaper.

Hi Robert,

The Auto-generated snapshot created while performing live storage migration of
disks
(moving disks from one storage domain to another while the VM is up), the
Auto-generated snapshot should be removed
automatically by the engine when the live migration ends.

The log you sent me doesn't contain the disk migration that you described.
Please send me some older log so I will be able to investigate if there was a
problem.

Can you please attach the VDSM and Engine log?

Also, please write the version of the engine you are working with.

Right. I know about understand those features. The problem is that whenever I
try them, they fail. Constant complaints about the snapshot. Which I am unable
to delete.
How else can I work with the disk files?

Hi Robert,

If I understand correctly you are trying to share disks between two VMs,
In Ovirt you can set a disk as sharable by editing the disk properties.
A shareable disk can be attached to multiple VMs.

If you wish to detach a disk from one VM and attach it to another VM it is
simple too,
select the VM that hold the relevant disk and detach the disk from it, you will
find the detached disk under the 'disks' tab.
To attach the floating disk to another VM, select the desired VM, go to the
disks tab and press 'attach'.
You will see all the floating disks that exist in the data-center.

I hope it helped, please ask if you have more questions.

without the snapshots, and use them with another VM. But, that does not appear
possible from what I can tell in oVirt.

I desperately need to get one specific VM going. The other two, no worries. I
was able to restore from backup, one of the effected VMs. The third is not

Is anyone experienced with taking VM disks from one and using them (without

Thanks if anyone can come up with a good answer that would help.

I have good news. With the IOProcess connection, I was suspecting maybe it
would be something with the system (BIOS related).
The Dell PE R730 was at BIOS version 2.2.5 and there was an update in April to
version 2.4.3 (with another inbetween these two). There were a couple of fixes
between the version the server had and the latest, which had me wondering if
they may be related to the IOProcess issue I was experiencing.
After applying this update the Hosted Engine deployment went further.
It could explain why I could not add this host in a previous installation.

I’ll start another thread for this next bump I’m running into, unless I can
figure it out. Has to do with the VDSM host. Engine says it cannot communicate
with this host its running on. So, the setup timed out waiting for the VDSM
host to start.

Not sure if you received my SOSReport (mail system told me the file is too

So, if you go to the end of the file, that is where the error is. “[Errno 2] No
such file or directory' - code 100” and it is happening on several files.
Something is apparently missing.

Thank you,
Robert

Re: [ovirt-users] Trouble Adding Gluster Host in oVirt Manager

2017-05-02 Thread Langley, Robert
No, the Engine does not currently have communication directly to the storage
network where GSA-Stor1 (aka GSA-Stor1e.engine.local) and GSA-Stor2 reside. The
host it is running on does have access.
Where am I supposed to go from here?

Is the gsa-stor1e.engine.local accessible to the the engine VM? If so, you
should be adding the hosts to engine using this address.
Once the host is added, create a Logical network in the cluster (non-VM
network) and assigne this a role of "Gluster" network in the cluster. You can
then assign this network to the gsa-stor1s.local using the host's "Setup
Networks" option. This will ensure that gluster is aware of this network to be
used while creating bricks from the UI.

Re: [ovirt-users] Trouble Adding Gluster Host in oVirt Manager

2017-05-02 Thread Langley, Robert
I remember why I couldn't add the network interface using the Manager.
It is requiring me to make the storage network a VM network. But, besides the
Engine using it to be able to communicate with the storage servers, it is not a
VM network. So, that it where I question what I should do. Just make the
storage network a VM network for the sake of the Engine VM?

[ovirt-users] Trouble Adding Gluster Host in oVirt Manager

2017-04-28 Thread Langley, Robert
Hello oVirt Community,

This may be my first time writing in. Although, I've been reviewing and playing
with oVirt for the past 3 years. My name is Robert Langley and I work for a
local Government in Southern California. My agency (with me as the primary/lead
IT person) has been using VMWare vSphere to host our server environment for 6
years. I have a few different reasons I want to jump the VMWare ship and I've
been pleased with the progression oVirt has been making. I do not care to jump
from VMWare to Microsoft's Hyper-V, so this had lead me to look into Xen for a
while, then dropped anchor with oVirt. I'm determined to see this
implementation through.

I have moved over from the test (workstation class) environment, where I was
really just getting familiar with the commands and UI, and now I am working on
implementation with server class hardware.
I have the engine up and running. I'll get into more specifics below.
I'm running into an issue where I have not been able to add my Gluster hosts or
add the Storage Domain (I had tried adding the storage domain first).
For my new oVirt and GlusterFS hosts I have the following:
* I want to first mention that I do have a DNS server for the
separated/private networks and those are configured and working properly
(forward & reverse).
Dell PE R830 and I would like this to be a failover server housed in a separate
building where we have an Emergency Operations Center and Datacenter (server
room).
- Has bonded gigabit (2 port) network that is connected to our main
network & internet, configured to be used for ovirtmgnt. Name = gsaov08.ent...
o As far as all the various names, oVirt Hosted Engine Deployment
complained that the Main network name was seen on more than one interface, or
something to that effect.
o I did originally have DNS for the separated/private networks configured
for forwarding DNS from our main network DNS servers. Which has been removed
and the Hosted Engine Deployment stopped complaining at that point. I was going
to use the forwarding DNS for another private network I use for some management
traffic, but that is not as important or an absolute need either.
- Has 2nd bonded gigabit (4 port) network (separate/private) for engine
storage. Name = gsaov08e.engine.local
- Has 3rd bonded 10G (2 port) network (separate/private) for VM Guest
storage. Name = gsaov08s.stor.local
- Will have a 4th network (separate/private) configured for security
related devices that are managed by a couple of our VM guests.
As far as storage in this same server.
- I have split up the local storage to be hosted by GlusterFS and this
host is a peer with the other two dedicated GlusterFS storage servers. That is
for the failover piece.
o Engine volume (currently being used for the Hosted Engine) and setup as
a replica 3 with the two dedicated GlusterFS storage servers.
o VM Guest "Data" volume. The volume is created, configured and started.
Setup as a replica 3 with the two dedicated GlusterFS storage servers.
So far, this is the only host I have hosting the engine. Now, onto the other
host I am about to run Hosted-Engine -Deploy on.
Dell PE R730 - It has the same network setup as the R830. Storage is a bit
different. I would like to run another VM Guest GlusterFS volume from here,
along with 2 other hosts I have. They are currently serving as the vSphere ESX
hosts and have the same total size of storage to create another replica 3.

The Dedicated GlusterFS Hosts are custom AMD Opteron G2 builds with ASUS server
motherboards. Strictly designed to be dedicated storage servers.
- I'm using the onboard NICs to connect to my management network only for
the purpose of getting updates. So, internet is served to these hosts via a NAT
router. Since I figured they don't otherwise need access to our main network.
The primary names = gsa-stor1 & gsa-stor2
- They both have a bonded (4 port) gigabit network for the Engine storage
network. Names = gsa-stor1e.engine.local & gsa-stor2e.engine.local
- They both have a bonded (2 port) 10G network for the VM Guest storage
network. Names = gsa-stor2s.stor.local & gsa-stor2s.stor.local
As far as storage in these servers.
- It is the same as the R830, as these servers are the peers to the R830.

First, I added an ISO Storage Domain (NFS). That was successful. Next, I was
trying to add the GlusterFS VM Guest Data Storage Domain. I receive an
Operation Canceled: Error while executing action AddGlusterFsStorageDomain:
Error creating a storage domain.
When I try to add the Gluster hosts as hosts in the oVirt Manager, I get a
message stating that SSH has failed, verify that the host is reachable (IP
address, routable address etc.) You may refer to the engine.log file for
further details.
I can otherwise communicate with the hosts and the engine.log does not appear
to have specifics to this particular failure.

[ovirt-users] During Hosted Engine Deployment. CPU Type not listed as compatible. No selection to choose from.

2016-05-16 Thread Langley, Robert
Host is a Dell PowerEdge 2950 with an Intel Xeon 5160 (Woodcrest) processor.
I'm stuck at the prompt, "Please specify the CPU type to be used by the VM []"
during the deployment.
There is nothing to select. No compatible CPU type is shown.
The server is from 2008 and I'm needing to use these older servers to get
started, before I can bring in the newer ones that are busy hosting VMs.
The other Dell PE 2950 is from 2007 and I was able to bring up the engine on
that one. It is a Conroe CPU. I won't get into my mistake with that deployment.
I'm working on recovering from that one.
I wanted to post about this, because I was trying to add this one (2008) as an
additional host and it wouldn't add, due to the processor.
So, one question (in addition to the problem above) is whether or not I can use
two hosts with two different processors for the hosted engine?
Thanks

Re: [ovirt-users] Hosted Engine Appliance hostname causing issues in production environment

2016-05-13 Thread Langley, Robert
I’m not quite sure about configuring the appliance with cloud-init. I think I
might know what you mean. Maybe that is the part of the setup that did not
happen for me.
I ended up creating my own hosted engine with a CDROM ISO to get me going today.
Thank you.

Did you try configuring the appliance with cloud-init?
Can you please attach hosted-engine-setup logs?

[ovirt-users] Hosted Engine Appliance hostname causing issues in production environment

2016-05-12 Thread Langley, Robert
Hello;

I discovered, the hard way, that the appliance is configured with the hostname
of localhost.localdomain.localdomain
It seems that something did not go well with the hosted-engine -deploy
I can go into the engine VM and edit the hostname, but if for any reason I need
to poweroff the engine VM, I get in trouble. Because, then the hostname goes
back to localhost.localdomain.localdomain and both DHCP & DNS within our
enterprise/production environment ends up assuming that for the hostname to IP
address reference or record. And it seems that other linux systems (not the
ones I administer; none of my almost 50 systems are effected. Of those, I have
about 5 linux/UNIX based systems attached to the production network) are going
offline because of this.
I assume they do not have their HOSTS file configured correctly, but they (the
other administrators) are not listening to me. I have already told them what to
look for, in order to fix the issue on their own systems, but they've ended up
with this now for the third time.
This is because I work for a local government and we have various
administrators for the various agencies within our County government.
I have unplugged my initial physical host from our County network and I think
I'm going to end up bringing up a physical engine host, then work on converting
that to a VM for a hosted engine. I hope that is going to work. I tried
bringing up the OVA of the appliance within VirtualBox, but that doesn't work.
Is there another virtual software I can bring up within a Windows PC to simply
edit the hostname, then export the appliance again?
I think the appliance for download needs to be changed to have something other
than "localhost.localdomain.localdomain" as the hostname in the hosted-engine
appliance. I downloaded the OVA file from the Jenkins.ovirt.org site.

Sincerely,
-Robert

Re: [ovirt-users] hosted-engine setup Gluster fails to execute

2016-05-03 Thread Langley, Robert
Outstanding! Thank you Sahina! Your assistance is much appreciated.
When I saw your email it reminded me that the versions were different and I was
having an issue with reaching the internet from the engine storage servers. A
DNS issue between my private DNS server and my organization's DNS server. I
figured out a workaround and found that I had to install the ovirt release36
rpm repository also. Since my host server had 3.7 (since it had the oVirt
release36 rpm repository) and my engine storage would only upgrade to the
latest 3.6 GlusterFS version. All are now at Glusterfs 3.7.11 and working. I
got past the storage configuration.

Command that failed to execute from your hosted-engine node - "gluster volume
info engine-vol --remote-host gsave0.engine.local"

Can you check the glusterfs versions on the hosted-engine node and
gsave0.engine.local node - are they the same?

It's just an implementation detail of hosted-engine-setup:
iSCSI an FC commands are define in blockd.py while commands for file based
storage domains (NFS and gluster) are defined in nfs.py.

Correction; I verified and on the Gluster Volume "engine-vol" nfs.disable is
off. Not sure if that is significant or not.

[ovirt-users] hosted-engine setup Gluster fails to execute

2016-04-30 Thread Langley, Robert
I'm attempting to host the engine within a GlusterFS Replica 3 storage volume.
During setup, after entering the server and volume, I'm receiving the message
that '/sbin/gluster' failed to execute.
Reviewing the gluster cmd log, it looks as though /sbin/gluster does execute.
I can successfully mount the volume on the host outside of the hosted-engine
setup.
Any assistance would be appreciated.
