[ovirt-users] Hosted-Engine with only 1-IP
Hello, one question from a beginner. The case, i rent a server with 1 public IP-Address. Is it possible to setup oVirt as Hosted-Engine via ssh and vnc remote with only 1 public IP-Address, or need i a second public IP-Address for the engine? Perhaps its about an host entriy or something like this possible?! Thx ___ Users mailing list Users@ovirt.org http://lists.ovirt.org/mailman/listinfo/users
Re: [ovirt-users] Where to add NFS Data Storage
Hello Joop, ans sorry for my late reply. Indeed the docs of red hat are very good, if you found the right one. i worke a few weeks with oVirt and i can make all run, but for my personal needs, i will understand the system and what is made where and why. Thats why i asked a lot question about deeper sense...There are also lots of howtos in the net which didnt work any more or for diffent cases or systems. So as i first startet with all-in-one, someone say that this will not longer supported at 4.x ok, so i test now the hosted-engine, but its a bit tricky to setup if you new and some changes came with new releases. i actually do more than 10 installation, and learned each time i play with options in setup. I searched the docs too, but some things i didnt find. My problem is still the handling of nfs export paths and activate them in ovirt later. one of my experience is: 1 path for data, 1 path for iso and all as nfs export, which work well. if iam in ovirt i cant activate the data path, while the wizard says it is allready in use. so next installation i created same 2 paths plus one for engine which i take at installation for the engine. if i later in ovirt add the data nfs path, i suddenly see both data nfs domains, engine and data. and thats what i not understand? For understanding, the storage cames though the Cluster and will used by the hosts, right? Or have i add each storage over the system, which will used in each cluster by the hosts? Or depend its on the concept of using the storage, e.g. storage on host or extra storage in the net? Don't know if you just want to play around with it for personal use or if its going to be using in a production environment. Doesn't matter whether its just one host or more than one. If the first than try to read up on ovirt or use the redhat Rhev docs on the redhat site. They are quite nice in explaining the concepts behind oVirt. If its the latter than I have been using/installing oVirt for quite some time, since the 3.0 times, and offer support on it for those in need I have no problems trying to help off or on list and maybe its just seeing how all fits together that will make you understand how things work. Hosted-engine is a 'warped' concept but it really works although there are certain pitfalls to be aware of. What I did was the following (probably missing quite a few steps) - create (minimum) two folders, one for hosted-engine storage, one for data storage, iso and export optional - create exports in /etc/exports - start nfs server - make sure permissions are 36:36 on the exports - start the nfs server - check if the mounts work (problem areas are: iptables/selinux) - install ovirt repo - install hosted-engine - run 'hosted-engine --deploy' - I installed from centos-7 iso but appliance should work too, no experience with it - enter the correct path when asked for the hosted storage, nfs and fqdn:/path-to-nfs-he-share - follow the instruction, not much needs changing from the default - Networkmanager still seems a problem, use static ip, don't try to bridge wifi :-) - If the engine is started using the ha-agent/broker it can take a while before the webui is available - If everything goes OK engine will claim and insert the hosted storage domain in the database and make it visible in the webui - DONT use it for VMs - create a new data domain on fqdn:/nfs/ovirt/data (or whatever your path is) - wait until its up - start creating VMs My case is a laptop running F22 with hosted-engine on it using a nfs server provided by my F22 host, engine itself is Centos7. So all storage is on my host but if I want I can move it somewhere else, add storage from somewhere else because I'm nog using local storage domain. Only thing is the overhead of the network filesystem that being either NFS/GlusterFS/ISCSI. There are some guides on how to setup oVirt using hosted-engine but to be honest its hard to find on the current site and searching on old.ovirt-.org doesn't work :-( Let me know how far you get and maybe I can help you further if you get stuck. I want to use nic1 for my lan and nic2 for the wan route into the internet. in ovirt i want to install a firewall and configure both nics, nic for lan and nic2 for wan. in the other vm's i want to install only nic1 as bridge and configure the firwall as gateway which also service the dhcp. at all it must be safe that the vms cant break out of this and go around the firewall. so as i understand i would do this: - set in centos nic1 as default gatway wich has 192.168.0.1 as gateway - set in centos nic2 without default route - add in ovirt a new network / nic - create the vm for the firwall and assign nic1 and nic2 - in the other vms i would only assign nic1 is that the way to do or what do you think? thx Taste Am 2016-03-08 09:45, schrieb Yaniv Kaul: Most likely (we've had something like that in FOSDEM) issue with DNS resolving. Re: [ovirt-users] Update Self-Hosted-Engine - Right Way?
Hello Gianluca, yes i installed the All-in-One Solution. I know the fact, that it will deprecated in Version 4.0, but my company is so small that it actually would not be profitable to use min 3 Server (2 ovirt and 1 for storage). i also have to migrate from another solution which doesnt support the free version realy good. So oVirt all-in-one seems to me a good option, actually, and i hope while lots of people use that, that the developer will have over version 4.0 a similar solution. as far as i know the support until 4.0 is still there for all-in-one and the date for release not public. so it could be at end of the year or later ... maybe ... Ok back to the topic. No i want to migrate, i simply want to Update from 3.6.2 to 3.6.3. Actually i do these: - in WebGUI Admin Portal i set the Host to Maintenance Mode - # yum check-update - # yum update - # engine-setup - run through config Options - in WebGUI run Upgrade for the Host - after successfull Upgrade i set the Host back to active These Steps seems in my test to work, but is that the right way for All-in-One ? So you previously installed an All-in-One setup following something like these instructions: http://www.ovirt.org/develop/release-management/features/integration/allinone/ [2] But this feature is deprecated in 3.6 and it should be dropped in 4.0 And you want to migrate this single host installation to an hosted-engine one, that for a clean new install should be done with something like this: http://www.ovirt.org/documentation/how-to/hosted-engine/ [3] In your case you have to migrate and follow something similar to this: http://www.ovirt.org/develop/developer-guide/engine/migrate-to-hosted-engine/ [4] but I think it is not so simple if you have at the end only one host to use You could export your VMs and the re-import them after migration and scratch of your hypevisor. What Joop suggested is the rpm command (adding a final "m" to rp) But I think that actually you are on All-in-one where the engine mgmt part is installed on the same machine that acts as the hypervisor. Try to read the migration doc I pointed out and see if you can adapt it to your environment (I don't know which 3.x version it is...) Or do you mean the hostsystem with installed ovirt engine? thx Not sure I follow. The engine runs on some machine, let's call it "the engine machine". If it's a self-hosted-engine, it's running inside a VM managed by itself. Otherwise it's running elsewhere (on some physical machine, or some other VM). A "Host", in ovirt terminology, is where VMs run. Now please describe what you did, what you now try to do that doesn't work, and what you can find in logs that might be related. If you can't access the web admin ui, that's a completely different problem than if you can't add a host to the engine. Best, Hi Didi, as far i understand there are to ways to setup ovirt. One as self-hosted enginge for ha and with ovirt host in vm on storage That's called "self-hosted-engine" and hosted engine where all runs on the same host. This is called all-in-one [1]. [1] http://www.ovirt.org/Feature/AllInOne So i setup hosted engine on same machine and in installation process i setup iso_domain via nfs too. i have done nothing more yet. so as i can see and read from the manual i now have to setup the host, No. You are not supposed to setup the host from the web interface. I didn't try that recently, but in the past there were issues similar to what you wrote below. Please follow the instructions in that page. Also please note that in 4.0, allinone will be dropped. Systems that wish to have everything on a single host will need to use hosted-engine. Also note that people reported locking issues with local nfs mounts, so it seems like the safest bet for now is to use nested kvm - run a VM to play the "Host" role, and another VM as an nfs server (or iscsi), and then either a third VM for the engine, or hosted-engine (meaning, engine runs inside a VM running inside the first VM). than network and than data domain and so on. now i setup the host and say new, put a name inside and the fqdn of the initial host of host engine like myserver.com. after that i saw the progress which says "installing.." i wait several minutes and after that i got network time out and cant enter the webgui. hope that helps Good luck, Hi, that sounds not good. As i understand the only way with ovirt from Version 4 will self-hosted-engine and i have to setup all in nested-vms if i want or only can use one machine, right? Not sure I completely followed. allinone will not be supported in 4. hosted-engine will be the only way to install an entire ovirt system on a single machine, _supported_ by ovirt. And as I said, even this one will require an external storage machine. Of course you can use virsh/kvm or whatever other means for creating VMs and use them to setup ovirt. Ok i will have to reinstall my testsystem. Is that the way todo: http://www.ovirt.org/Features/Self_Hosted_Engine? Yes, but you can use the howto [1], which is perhaps more comfortable. [1] http://www.ovirt.org/Hosted_Engine_Howto So i have to install ovirt on centos7, than create a kvm with centos for the engine than for the host and last a kvm for the nfs and data domain with centos, or better to use iscsi du to performance? after that i can install the first virtuall machine, right? Depends on what you want to do. BTW, I didn't mention glusterfs, mainly because I do not know it well, but that's also something to consider. sounds strange and complicated... ovirt is not designed to manage a single m
