Re: [ovirt-users] Performance issue for GlusterFS as the block storage for VMs

2015-01-15 Thread Yue, Cong
I am using iometer (http://www.iometer.org/) to test the IOPS from one of the
vm.
As for IOPS is more trying to test the performance of block, rather than real
file transfer.

In my environment, I am using 10Gbe to make two gluster nodes be replicated.
And I mount it to vm as a volume. I tested the performance both for SAS and SSD.
This is my current result with iometer.

The issue for GlusterFS I found is

- It can not retain the nature of SSD and SAS, such as SAS is strong
for sequential access. SSD is strong for random access.

- In some case, especially for SSD, the performance is pretty bad.

Do you have any metrics to give an idea of the difference. I am using NFS right
now, and I am migrating to Gluster. I have the gluster system up, and I see
that it seems to provision disks faster than my NFS. I haven't used any real
measurement tools to get actual metrics, this is all perceived.

Do you have an operational gluster?
Do what are you using right now?

Hi

I have one question about whether GlusterFS is the suitable solution to be used
as the block storage for VMs.
The failure tolerant and scalability is good for GlusterFS, but in my test, it
seems the iops is pretty bad. In some blog, it said, it is even with worse
performance than normal NFS.
Should I use iscsi+drbd for the block storage for VMs.
Can somebody give some advice for this?

It is just the default configuration. What is your advice for the tuning of I/O
performance?

For Gluster FS, actually I used Xenserver currently. I justed mounted the
gluster as a NFS to XenHost to be used as a SR. Is there any way to use
GlusterFS as a iscsi target ?

I see.

So have you done any tuning for IO performance or are the configs straight out
of the box. You also said you mounted the volume to a vm. Did you mount it as
gluster or use the built in NFS??

- agent did everything correctly and as Artyom says, the migration is
aborted by vdsm:

The migration took 260 seconds which is exceeding the configured maximum
time for migrations of 256 seconds. The migration will be aborted.

- there is a configuration option in vdsm conf you can tweak to increase
the timeout:

snip
'migration_max_time_per_gib_mem', '64',
'The maximum time in seconds per GiB memory a migration may
take '
'before the migration will be aborted by the source host. '
'Setting this value to 0 will disable this feature.'
/snip

So as you can see in your case it's 4 * 64 seconds = 256seconds.

For

Is there any way to make the VM failover happen(move to another host in the

Also How I can test in my environment? Please kindly advise.

Thanks for the advice. I applied the patch for clientIF.py as
- port = config.getint('addresses', 'management_port')
+ port = config.get('addresses', 'management_port')

Now there is no fatal error in beam.log, also migration can start to happen
when I set the host where HE VM is to be local maintenance mode. But it finally
fail with the following log. Also HE VM can not be done with live migration in
my environment.

Besides, I had a try for other VMs instead of HE VM, but the failover( also no
start to try migrating) happen. I set HA for those VMs. Is there some log I can
check for this?

Please kindly advise.

Thanks,
Cong

HE vm migrated only by ovirt-ha-agent and not by engine, but FatalError it's
more interesting, can you provide vdsm.log for this one please.

I disabled local maintenance mode for all hosts, and then only set the host
where HE VM is there to local maintenance mode. The logs are as follows.
During the migration of HE VM , it shows some fatal error happen. By the
way, also HE VM can not work with live migration. Instead, other VMs can do
 live migration.

I found the workaround for this.

For some reason my Storage domain of data can not be mounted. I just mount it
manually, like

mount –t nfs nfs2-3:/data /rhev/data-center/mnt/nfs2-3:_data

Actually, the folder of “/rhev/data-center/mnt/nfs2-3:_data” has been
created. I think this may be some bug as for in my environment, I will
reproduce it always if I try to deploy the host from second time.

Thanks,

Cong

I think the problems for my issue are related with the NFS version.

From the second, if I change the value of Defaultver /etc/nfsmount.conf from
“Defaultvres=4” to “Defaulvers=3”, the mount can not be done. When I changed
it back to “Defaultvers=4”, it will work.

Also from /proc/mounts, it shows the nfs version is nfs4. But for my first
host, it is nfs3.

Do somebody have the similar issue about thi?

Thank in advance,

Cong

Hi

I successfully deployed the first ovirt host with hosted-engine –deploy.
Engine VM works well.

While, when I try to create the second host with the same way as the guide of

http://community.redhat.com/blog/2014/11/up-and-running-with-ovirt-3-5-part-two/

I am not using GlusterFS, and just use one external storage(nfs) in my
environment.

The issue I have is in the engine administration menu, it says “can not
connect to storage domain data”

In the second host, I checked with nfs-check.py for both storage and data
domain. It shows the status is ok.

http://www.ovirt.org/Troubleshooting_NFS_Storage_Issues

During deployment of the second host, how the data domain is trying to be
mounted?

Re: [ovirt-users] console viewer for ovrit engine

2014-12-19 Thread Yue, Cong
So. It means the web-proxy should be installed into the engine inside the virt
nodes where host the VM.
The ovirt engine is with centos 6.6.

I will have a try for this later.

Thanks,
Cong

 Thanks for the reply.
Yes, I am using centos for host. What engine host in your definition?
Is the host PC where engine VM is running on the top?

The physical host or VM witch runs the engine.

I am doing the walkthrough as

I am glad to test your new 3.5.1 in my environment.

I checked but also it saids there is no such package. It works now
  with my native client.

  Some strange..

The oVirt websocket proxy is part of the engine and it's by default
installed on the engine host when you install the engine; engine-setup
asks if you want to configure it or not.
Than, if you really need for your network design, you can also install
and configure the websocket proxy on a different host.
  http://www.ovirt.org/Features/WebSocketProxy_on_a_separate_host
but this is already a special case.

I read in this thread that you are using centos7 (also for the engine host?).
We didn't release oVirt 3.5.0 for el7 but we'll do since 3.5.1 which
is targeted just after Christmas vacation (you are welcome to help us
testing it on centos7!) so now you still cannot find
 ovirt-websocket-proxy rpm for
 el7 on the stable branch.
If you really need to install it right now on el7 you can try from
 nightly snapshot.

  Thanks,

  Cong

Re: [ovirt-users] VM failover with ovirt3.5

2014-12-19 Thread Yue, Cong
In the documentation of
http://www.ovirt.org/OVirt_Administration_Guide#.E2.81.A0Improving_Uptime_with_Virtual_Machine_High_Availability
 it says
To enable the migration of highly available virtual machines:
Power management must be configured for the hosts running the highly available
virtual machines.

Does this mean I need to confirgure all poer management for all ovirt nodes?

Thanks,
Cong

Thanks for the information. This is the log for my three ovirt nodes.
From the output of hosted-engine --vm-status, it shows the engine state for my
2nd and 3rd ovirt node is DOWN.
Is this the reason why VM failover not work in my environment? How can I make
also engine works for my 2nd and 3rd ovit nodes?

I checked but also it saids there is no such package. It works now
 with my native client.

 Some strange..

The oVirt websocket proxy is part of the engine and it's by default installed
on the engine host when you install the engine; engine-setup asks if you want
to configure it or not.
Than, if you really need for your network design, you can also install and
configure the websocket proxy on a different host.
 http://www.ovirt.org/Features/WebSocketProxy_on_a_separate_host
but this is already a special case.

I read in this thread that you are using centos7 (also for the engine host?).
We didn't release oVirt 3.5.0 for el7 but we'll do since 3.5.1 which is
targeted just after Christmas vacation (you are welcome to help us testing it
on centos7!) so now you still cannot find ovirt-websocket-proxy rpm for el7 on
the stable branch.
If you really need to install it right now on el7 you can try from nightly
snapshot.

 Thanks,

 Cong

[ovirt-users] architecture of ovirt in case of using hosted-engine

2014-12-18 Thread Yue, Cong
I understand ovirt have ovirt engine and ovirt nodes. For ovirt engine, it can
be hosted on the top of ovirt nodes as one VM.

I am using hosted-engine to try to do this.
When I try to deploy the second ovirt node.
I did
Hosted-engine -deploy

And is asks me when I want to create a VM where you have to install oVirt
Engine afterwards. I am some confused whether this means another new engine VM
will be created into the second ovirt nodes?

Also I met a problem for the second ovirt node deployment. In the event, it
saids Failed to connect to Host hosted_engine_2 to Storage domain data.
As for I met the same problem for /engine, and I just used nfs4 and it works.
Is there some way I can redeploy it? Do I need do hosted-engine -destroy-VM?

Thanks,
Cong

[ovirt-users] Can not connect to Storage domain data

2014-12-18 Thread Yue, Cong
Hi

I successfully deployed the first ovirt host with hosted-engine -deploy. Engine
VM works well.
While, when I try to create the second host with the same way as the guide of
http://community.redhat.com/blog/2014/11/up-and-running-with-ovirt-3-5-part-two/

I am not using GlusterFS, and just use one external storage(nfs) in my

The issue I have is in the engine administration menu, it says can not connect
to storage domain data
In the second host, I checked with nfs-check.py for both storage and data
domain. It shows the status is ok.
http://www.ovirt.org/Troubleshooting_NFS_Storage_Issues

During deployment of the second host, how the data domain is trying to be
mounted?

Re: [ovirt-users] Can not connect to Storage domain data

I think the problems for my issue are related with the NFS version.
From the second, if I change the value of Defaultver /etc/nfsmount.conf from
Defaultvres=4 to Defaulvers=3, the mount can not be done. When I changed
it back to Defaultvers=4, it will work.
Also from /proc/mounts, it shows the nfs version is nfs4. But for my first
host, it is nfs3.

Do somebody have the similar issue about thi?

Re: [ovirt-users] Can not connect to Storage domain data

2014-12-18 Thread Yue, Cong
I found the workaround for this.

For some reason my Storage domain of data can not be mounted. I just mount it
manually, like

mount -t nfs nfs2-3:/data /rhev/data-center/mnt/nfs2-3:_data

Actually, the folder of /rhev/data-center/mnt/nfs2-3:_data has been created.
I think this may be some bug as for in my environment, I will reproduce it
always if I try to deploy the host from second time.

Thanks,
Cong

[ovirt-users] VM failover with ovirt3.5

2014-12-18 Thread Yue, Cong
Hi

In my environment, I have 3 ovirt nodes as one cluster. And on top of host-1,
there is one vm to host ovirt engine.
Also I have one external storage for the cluster to use as data domain of
engine and data.
I confirmed live migration works well in my environment.
But it seems very buggy for VM failover if I try to force to shut down one
ovirt node. Sometimes the VM in the node which is shutdown can migrate to other
host, but it take more than several minutes.
Sometimes, it can not migrate at all. Sometimes, only when the host is back,
the VM is beginning to move.

Is there some documentation to explain how VM failover is working? And is there
some bugs reported related with this?

Thanks in advance,
Cong

Re: [ovirt-users] FQDN for vm creating with hosted-engine

2014-12-17 Thread Yue, Cong
---
FQDN or fully qualified domain name means that you have to reserve in your DNS
a name corresponding to IP received by HE VM from DHCP.
IP address should be reserved for the VM at DHCP.

I advise not to use manual IP to FQDN at your host, as this will lead to many
confusions, especially when you'll have more than a single host machine, but
you always can configure at your /etc/hosts file the FQDN corresponding to IP
address given to HE VM.
---
Thanks for the explanation. Now I understand what FQDN is for Ovirt. Is there
any problem if I do not use the naming convention like aaa.bbb.ccc, but only
aaa?
Also I am some confused for the above explanation. Here it said the IP for VM
is better to be got from DHCP rather than manual IP. If so, do this mean I need
to change all /etc/hosts file of all virt nodes to update the IP for the FQDN
for engine VM?
What is the confusions if I use manual IP rather than DHCP for engine VM?

Thanks,
Cong

Hi

Now I am trying to confirm KVM's HA with ovirt, and doing the walk through as
the following guide.

http://community.redhat.com/blog/2014/10/up-and-running-with-ovirt-3-5/

During the VM setting, FQDN is asked, what FQDN means about? Does it mean the
hostname of VM host? In my case, it is compute2-2.

The following is my hosts file, my VM host and storage is 10.0.0.92.

And I am trying to assign 10.0.0.95 to the hosted VM.

---

[root@compute2-2 ~]# cat /etc/hosts

10.0.0.93 compute2-2 nfs2-2

10.0.0.95 ovrit-test

127.0.0.1 localhost localhost.localdomain localhost4 localhost4.localdomain4

::1 localhost localhost.localdomain localhost6 localhost6.localdomain6

Also how I can remove the VM I installed, as for when I try to do hosted-engine
--deploy, it shows

---

[root@compute2-2 ~]# hosted-engine --deploy [ INFO ] Stage: Initializing

Continuing will configure this host for serving

[ovirt-users] NFS can not be mounted after the installation of ovirt-hosted-engine

2014-12-17 Thread Yue, Cong
Hi

I walked through the installation of ovirt-hosted-engine as
http://community.redhat.com/blog/2014/10/up-and-running-with-ovirt-3-5/

And I met a problem in the step of Configure storage

In my ovirt host, I am using nfs v3 for the test. I created two exports points,
and just after that I confirmed with other client that I can mount these two
points.
My /etc/exports is as

---
/engine 10.0.0.0/24(rw,sync,no_root_squash,no_all_squash)
/data 10.0.0.0/24(rw,sync,no_root_squash,no_all_squash)
---

While after I completed the engine VM install, I found these two points can not
be mounted again with the same command
as
mount -t nfs 10.0.0.94:/engine /engine

Is ovirt changed something for nfs server configuration or something wrong with
my setting?

Thanks in advance,
Cong

Yes, it's a know issue [1]. Please check iptables rules and re-open
 NFS required ports.
 [1] https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1109326

We already had a patch for it, it will be included next month in oVirt
 3.5.1

Oh, it's note really the same: this it's related to hosted-engine but is not
that different.
Please check iptables rules.

  or something wrong
  with my setting?

[ovirt-users] console viewer for ovrit engine

2014-12-17 Thread Yue, Cong
Hi

I finally created VM and it seems work well. But for the administrator menu, but
I can not show the browser-embeded console, noVNC and Spice HTML5 browser
client.
I am using firefox and chrome in Ubuntu 14.04 desktop OS.
Is there any setting or requirements for the browser-embeded console viewer?
Also if I select other console options as native client, one .w file will be
downloaded, what is the recommendation to open these .w files with some native
viewer for Ubuntu 14.04 desktop?

Thanks,
Cong

No, it was not realted with selinux. It is the same issue as Simone advised.

Yes, it's a know issue [1]. Please check iptables rules and re-open

What I did is to add the lost iptables rules into /etc/sysconfig/iptables and
restarted iptables service.

You need to import the certificate as an Authority, not as a regular
certificate. Also check that it can sign other certificate, there should be
3 checkboxes if you import it in the right location.

[ovirt-users] nfs shared storage can not be mounted in second host during hosted-engine --deploy

2014-12-17 Thread Yue, Cong
I am trying to install the second host to test the HA for hypervisor . I am

I configured the first node with that shared storage as nfs2-3:/engine. And now
everything works well except for browser embedded console. :)

But when I did hosted-engine -deploy for the second host, there is some error
which shows
--
Error while mounting specified storage path: mount.nfs: Connection timed out.
Cannot unmounts /tmp/tmpLALdB1

I checked from the second with mount -t nfs nfs2-3:/engine /test_mount, and it
works well.

Do I need unblock something or is there some log I can dig further to find the
problem?

[ovirt-users] FQDN for vm creating with hosted-engine

2014-12-16 Thread Yue, Cong
Hi

Now I am trying to confirm KVM's HA with ovirt, and doing the walk through as
the following guide.

http://community.redhat.com/blog/2014/10/up-and-running-with-ovirt-3-5/

During the VM setting, FQDN is asked, what FQDN means about? Does it mean the
hostname of VM host? In my case, it is compute2-2.

The following is my hosts file, my VM host and storage is 10.0.0.92.

And I am trying to assign 10.0.0.95 to the hosted VM.

---

[root@compute2-2 ~]# cat /etc/hosts

10.0.0.93 compute2-2 nfs2-2

10.0.0.95 ovrit-test

127.0.0.1 localhost localhost.localdomain localhost4 localhost4.localdomain4

::1 localhost localhost.localdomain localhost6 localhost6.localdomain6

Also how I can remove the VM I installed, as for when I try to do hosted-engine
--deploy, it shows

---

[root@compute2-2 ~]# hosted-engine --deploy [ INFO ] Stage: Initializing

Continuing will configure this host for serving as hypervisor and
create a VM where you have to install oVirt Engine afterwards.

Are you sure you want to continue? (Yes, No)[Yes]: Yes [ INFO ]

2014-12-15 Thread Yue, Cong
It is centos 6.6 with the update from centos 6.5. What I did for OS
installation is to install centos 6.5 minimum and did yum update from that
version.
In my server, it shows it is CentOS 6.6 now.

Thanks,
Cong

Re: [ovirt-users] Installtion fail for Ovirt engine in CentOS 6.5

2014-12-15 Thread Yue, Cong
Thanks for the comment. I found the reason now, and installed ovirt engine
successfully.

In my /etc/hosts, I comment out 127.0.0.1 localhost. While, for Ovirt, it
seems it need localhost for db access.

Thanks,
Cong

You chose automatic database configuration, setup fails trying to stop
postgresql service.

2014-12-15 11:41:17 DEBUG otopi.plugins.otopi.services.rhel plugin.execute:861
execute-output: ('/sbin/service', 'postgresql', 'stop') stdout:
Stopping postgresql service: [FAILED]

I do not see why in the log.

Can you please checkout /var/log/messages or /var/lib/pgsql/data/pg_log

If you do not need anything of postgresql you can revert to initial state and
retry.
1. service stop postgresql
2. rm -fr /var/lib/pgsql/data
3. engine-setup
