Re: [Users] clone vm from snapshot problem in 3.2

2013-05-16 Thread Alexandru Vladulescu

Hi all,

I am facing the same problem regarding the VM clone viewing the
details from snapshot as Gianluca has described in this current thread.

The single problem I am facing now, is that your thread is from 3 months
old, I am using el6 stable repository on a CentOS 6.3 installation and
my rpm list below looks like:

ovirt-engine-sdk-3.2.0.10-1.el6.noarch
ovirt-engine-webadmin-portal-3.2.1-1.beta1.el6.noarch
ovirt-engine-setup-3.2.1-1.beta1.el6.noarch
ovirt-engine-userportal-3.2.1-1.beta1.el6.noarch
ovirt-engine-dbscripts-3.2.1-1.beta1.el6.noarch
ovirt-engine-3.2.1-1.beta1.el6.noarch
ovirt-engine-cli-3.2.0.11-1.el6.noarch
ovirt-engine-tools-3.2.1-1.beta1.el6.noarch
ovirt-engine-genericapi-3.2.1-1.beta1.el6.noarch
ovirt-engine-backend-3.2.1-1.beta1.el6.noarch
ovirt-engine-restapi-3.2.1-1.beta1.el6.noarch

As I can see, there were some revision set updates on the ovirt engine
core rpms, that I suppose, it should include this as well:
http://gerrit.ovirt.org/#/c/11254/

Can someone provide me some piece of advice on how to fix things ?

Thanks you.

Hello,
so I rebuilt with the patch.
I built as in this thread:
http://lists.ovirt.org/pipermail/users/2013-February/012702.html

directly on engine server and with engine stopped:

sudo rpm -Uvh --force $(ls -1|grep -v all)

with
$ ls -1|grep -v all
ovirt-engine-3.2.0-4.fc18.noarch.rpm
ovirt-engine-backend-3.2.0-4.fc18.noarch.rpm
ovirt-engine-config-3.2.0-4.fc18.noarch.rpm
ovirt-engine-dbscripts-3.2.0-4.fc18.noarch.rpm
ovirt-engine-genericapi-3.2.0-4.fc18.noarch.rpm
ovirt-engine-notification-service-3.2.0-4.fc18.noarch.rpm
ovirt-engine-restapi-3.2.0-4.fc18.noarch.rpm
ovirt-engine-setup-3.2.0-4.fc18.noarch.rpm
ovirt-engine-tools-common-3.2.0-4.fc18.noarch.rpm
ovirt-engine-userportal-3.2.0-4.fc18.noarch.rpm
ovirt-engine-webadmin-portal-3.2.0-4.fc18.noarch.rpm

and then reboot the engine

Results:

OK, for the snapshot details pane. It seem the patch fixes this too.
Until now I was never able to see snapshot details,
Instead now I can see disk and nic details. See:
https://docs.google.com/file/d/0BwoPbcrMv8mvQmlCZTZBYjBadmc/edit?usp=sharing

OK, if I clone a VM from a snapshot of a running VM (CentOS 5.6)
I start the clone and no problem at all.

well done!

Corner cases and problems

1)
OK, if I clone a powered on VM from a snapshot with two disks and here
you can find clone in action with webadmin gui and iotop on node that
shows they are cloning in parallel.. well!
https://docs.google.com/file/d/0BwoPbcrMv8mvZ3lzY0l1MDc5OVE/edit?usp=sharing

The VM is a slackware 14 32bit with virtio disk that I obtained from a
virt-v2v from CentOS 6.3+Qemu/KVM
The problem is that the cloned VM recognizes the disks in reversed order

See these images where sl1432 is master slcone is the clone

disk layout in details pane seems equal with boot disk the one that
appears as the second, but the master boots ok, the slave no.
Disks are swapped

Master VM disk details:
https://docs.google.com/file/d/0BwoPbcrMv8mvSWNVNFI4bHg4Umc/edit?usp=sharing

Clone VM disks details:
https://docs.google.com/file/d/0BwoPbcrMv8mvM1N0bVcyNlFPS1U/edit?usp=sharing

Page with the two consoles where you can see that vda of master
becomes vdb of clone and vice-versa:
https://docs.google.com/file/d/0BwoPbcrMv8mveFpESEs5V1dUTFE/edit?usp=sharing

Can I swap again in some way? In VMware for example you can see and
edit SCSI IDs of disks...

2)
KO, if I clone a windows 7 VM from a snapshot (time 17:09) I get this on gui
https://docs.google.com/file/d/0BwoPbcrMv8mvaW9OVW84WVI1dkU/edit?usp=sharing

You can find the engine.log from server restart (at 17:06) here:
https://docs.google.com/file/d/0BwoPbcrMv8mvTDQzRTFfbFgxX0E/edit?usp=sharing

Are there any restrictions?
The VM was powered off when taking the snapshot and making the clone.

Re: [Users] Lost our management server.. have DB backup but no /etc/pki/

2013-02-18 Thread Alexandru Vladulescu

Hi,

Because I have foreseen this situation on my side for future upgrades
and fail-over cases, I did a simpler .sh script with a crontab to run on
a nightly basis.

I have attached the script here for you and others to use it and don't
bump in the future in such problems with your sistem.

In a recovery case, you just need to stop ovirt-engine, jboss and insert
the saved db dump, and overwrite /etc/pki/ovirt-engine directory with
the certificates from the dump archive.

Of course the script could be developed even further to send email or
SMS text notifications in case of a trouble but this was written in less
then 10 minutes. Adapt it for you needs ! I use NFS share and paths.

Hope it helps !

Cheers,
Alex.

Re: [Users] oVirt + drbd

2013-02-15 Thread Alexandru Vladulescu

BTW, remembered to say that I have seen such a similar setup on 3.2 beta
for Ovirt node controller with DRBD + pacemaker and written a lsb for
ovirt and jboss service for the cluster.

The Ovirt WUI installation compasses on the Floating IP service from the
two instances, therefore it is possible if referring to this.

Hi,

I think it might be possible. I plan to do that myself, but don't
consider rising DRBD to Ovirt leve, such as configuring it in the

If you're using NFS domain, you might increase your redundancy level
by setting up on the storage nfs side a drbd + pacemaker cluster for
nfs export or, why not bump into geo resilience replication through
main DC and DR DC.

Using 3.1.0-3.19 from dreyou's repo on Centos 6.3 version, running

Looking through htop command could see that VM were still running and
responsive but any vdsclient command failed with the upper code paste I
have given. Solution here was to connect to each VM, shut it down and
restart vdsmd and power it up again. There's no problem with the storage
size as it has aprox 800GB free of space and running through NFS. All
nfs mount points were running okay at that time.

After the VM has been snapshoot-ed went into pause mode and had to
un-pause it from GUI, but the VM was still responsive through network
and operations.

Has anybody seen something related to this by now or it's just related
to 3.1 version ? Mentioning the fact that I did a research on the
similar mailing list topics and could not find something related to this
error. I would happily provide logs if needed.

Re: [Users] 3.1 to 3.2 migration

2013-01-24 Thread Alexandru Vladulescu

Dear Adrian,

By migration I mean to say migration of the products from 3.1 to 3.2 --
or upgrade of the Ovirt platform. The test upgrade was done, in my
case, on a machine that only acts as a node controller in the system,
therefore there is no ISO domains, local storage volumes or vdsm daemon
for hypervisior purpose running.

Using, dreyou's repo, I included the 3.2 alpha release, removed the 3.1
version clean from the system, install all the 3.2 ovirt packages
version and run engine-setup on the new installation.

I did not run engine-cleanup, therefore the DB was untouched and running
engine-setup, I saw that the DB initialization sequence was pushing new
table data updates on the running DB from postgres as the new size
went from 10MB to 15MB.

After completing the setup, I was only able to login into the http
section configured to port 80, but going to admin portal on 443 proved
to be impossible as the page could not be displayed was listed.

In 3.1 I am using port 8080 for http and 8443 for https, but in the 3.2
version, trying to configure in the engine-setup to run same or other
ports different from 80 and 443, proved to make the (jboss server) not
listening on https connections when tried to log in.

As a remark, I saw a different integration mechanism between 3.1 and 3.2
versions, on how jboss interacts with ovirt-engine process. In 3.1 the
jboss was running (if configured) on -server daemon process (in
netstat); and if not configured as java; and in 3.2 the jboss process I
guess it's started withing the engine-service process (seen that in
netstat -tupan).

I might add, that I don't want to strictly run the jboss with https
adding in apache files in conf.d the ovirt-engine.conf (where the
ProxyPass is added).

Reading the list, I could not find any threads open so far for the 3.1
to 3.2 migration (upgrade/update platform), therefore I had open this in
hope that someone else has tested this so far.I'm guessing the 3.2 as we
know it, it not a stable release yet, so, some bugs or incompatibility
issues might arise during the upgrade/swap versions process.

Any thoughts on this ?

My regards to you all,
Alex.

Hi everybody,

This might seem to be a stupid question but I might just give it a
shot
and ask you if has anybody tried so far to migrate a 3.1 stable to
a 3.2
alpha release ? On my side I have no luck.

What do you mean by migrating? Updating packages on the same machine?
Migrating from one machine to another one?
You mean you want to update/migrate ovirt-engine, isn't it ?

Might have found a bug as well, but that is what you need to
confirm to
me. I had the jboss setup running on port http 8080 and for https
8443.
After the upgrade, everything I try besides the port 80 and 443
doesn't
work. If I try to reconfigure the previous used ports, I find java
listening on port 8080 for http, but when I try to log in and
switch to
https on admin portal there is nothing listening out there and I get
Page cannot be displayed.

How do you try to reconfigure it? What commands do you run? Or what
files do you edit?

If we cannot consider migration, would it be sufficient to insert the
dump from the 3.1 into 3.2 current alpha release ?

As I said above we don't know what you mean by migration.

I remember asking the same thing a couple of weeks ago. Itamar answered
to be the same, should check the vdsm.conf file for nfs mount options.
Because I did not had the time to do test this until now, I return with

Well Alex it seems to be right, on the 3.1 version, if you go and edit
the /etc/vdsm/vdsm.conf file, on line 146, I uncommented the
nfs_mount_options parameter and changed it to :

nfs_mount_options = soft,nosharecache,noatime,rsize=8192,wsize=8192

Went in Ovirt interface, put the node from Hosts tab into Maintenance,
so that the ISO domain and Master Domain will get unmounted
automatically; restarted the vdsm service on the hypervisior server and
activate the node back from GUI. Upon mount command, there is no change

automatically before.

 type nfs
(rw,soft,nosharecache,timeo=10,retrans=6,vers=4,addr=x.x.x.x,clientaddr=x.x.x.x)

Might this be a bug on vdsm to be fixed ?

another question would be if nolock would be a good idea as it
seems that nfs ops are sometimes being blocked by a lock ? at

are you trying to set nfs options from both engine and vdsm.conf?
Basically, I had 2 questions, one was like Alex asked and it is in the

Above is after I restarted HV03 so it really should have mounted
HV03:/vmfs/data with the new options

another question would be if nolock would be a good idea as it
seems that nfs ops are sometimes being blocked by a lock ? at
least, it behaves as if .. i havent further investigated yet.

you can also set them via a posixfs storage domain, but for

Hi,

As you you're using CentOS I suppose you don't need to upgrade
your CentOS but I'm not sure at all.

This is not the case, it goes right if installed 3.2 from scratch
on a new machine. Don't think CentOS has a problem here.

Well, I remember having asked about Fedora and CentOS oVirt support
differences in the irc and I think I was answered that for some
features you needed extra repositories for new kernel + kvm and / or
gluster and /or libvirt. Not sure about what were exactly the features
you missed and the repos you need to enable manually.

But just for upgrading to oVirt 3.2 I think you won't have any problem.

Anyways what I've read in the mailing list about 3.1 to 3.2
update is the following one:

  * Update packages
  * Run: engine-upgrade command

I don't know how easy it is to update packages in your case
(stable to beta) so you might do it in your way like this:
  * Remove 3.1 packages
  * Install 3.2 beta packages
  * Run: engine-upgrade command

I have removed 3.1 using yum, installed 3.2 using yum and run the
engine-setup and not upgrade command. As seen engine-upgrade,
tries first to locate a mirror through yum.

Hummm. Maybe I was mistaken and what you have to do is to add a yum
repository and then run engine-upgrade. What I remember without any
doubt is that you had to run engine-upgrade no matter what.

Hope someone can clarify it.

I will check that and get back to you.

[Users] 3.1 to 3.2 migration

2013-01-22 Thread Alexandru Vladulescu

Hi everybody,

This might seem to be a stupid question but I might just give it a shot
and ask you if has anybody tried so far to migrate a 3.1 stable to a 3.2
alpha release ? On my side I have no luck.

Might have found a bug as well, but that is what you need to confirm to
me. I had the jboss setup running on port http 8080 and for https 8443.
After the upgrade, everything I try besides the port 80 and 443 doesn't
work. If I try to reconfigure the previous used ports, I find java
listening on port 8080 for http, but when I try to log in and switch to
https on admin portal there is nothing listening out there and I get
Page cannot be displayed.

If we cannot consider migration, would it be sufficient to insert the
dump from the 3.1 into 3.2 current alpha release ?

Re: [Users] Testing High Availability and Power outages

2013-01-13 Thread Alexandru Vladulescu
Dear Doron,

I haven't collected the logs from the tests, but I would gladly re-do the case
and get back to you asap.

This feature is the main reason of which I have chosen to go with Ovirt in the
first place, besides other virt environments.

Could you please inform me what logs should I be focusing on, besides the
engine log; vdsm maybe or other relevant logs?

Regards,
Alex

Subject: [Users] Testing High Availability and Power outages

 Hi,

Today, I started testing on my Ovirt 3.1 installation (from dreyou repos)
running on 3 x Centos 6.3 hypervisors the High Availability features and the
 fence mechanism.

As yesterday, I have reported in a previous email thread, that the migration
priority queue cannot be increased (bug) in this current version, I decided
to test what the official documentation says about the High Availability
 cases.

This will be a disaster case scenarios to suffer from if one hypervisor has a
power outage/hardware problem and the VMs running on it are not migrating on
 other spare resources.

In the official documenation from ovirt.org it is quoted the following:
 High availability

Allows critical VMs to be restarted on another host in the event of hardware
failure with three levels of priority, taking into account resiliency policy.

Resiliency policy to control high availability VMs at the cluster level.
Supports application-level high availability with supported fencing agents.

As well as in the Architecture description:

High Availability - restart guest VMs from failed hosts automatically on
 other hosts

So the testing went like this -- One VM running a linux box, having the check
box High Available and Priority for Run/Migration queue: set to Low. On
Host we have the check box to Any Host in Cluster, without Allow VM
migration only upon Admin specific request checked.

 My environment:

 Configuration : 2 x Hypervisors (same cluster/hardware configuration) ; 1 x
Hypervisor + acting as a NAS (NFS) server (different cluster/hardware
 configuration)

Actions: Went and cut-off the power from one of the hypervisors from the 2
node clusters, while the VM was running on. This would translate to a power
 outage.

Results: The hypervisor node that suffered from the outage is showing in
Hosts tab as Non Responsive on Status, and the VM has a question mark and
cannot be powered off or nothing (therefore it's stuck).

In the Log console in GUI, I get:

 Host Hyper01 is non-responsive.
VM Web-Frontend01 was set to the Unknown status.

There is nothing I could I could do besides clicking on the Hyper01 Confirm
Host as been rebooted, afterwards the VM starts on the Hyper02 with a cold
 reboot of the VM.

 The Log console changes to:

Vm Web-Frontend01 was shut down due to Hyper01 host reboot or manual fence
All VMs' status on Non-Responsive Host Hyper01 were changed to 'Down' by
 admin@internal
Manual fencing for host Hyper01 was started.
VM Web-Frontend01 was restarted on Host Hyper02

I would like you approach on this problem, reading the documentation
features pages on the official website, I suppose that this would have been
an automatically mechanism working on some sort of a vdsm engine fencing
action. Am I missing something regarding it ?

Thank you for your patience reading this.

 Regards,
 Alex.

[Users] VM Priority for Run/Migration queue set failed

2013-01-10 Thread Alexandru Vladulescu

Hi All,

I have the following problem:

When I try to edit the configuration of a VM, VM being shut down, I go
to High Availability section, select the check box for Highly Available,
and try to increase afterwards the queue priority from Low to Medium or
High.

Despite the fact that I check the box for the Medium or High, after I
hit OK, and return to general information about VM, I see that Priority
remains unchanged to Low.

This is not what happens with the Highly Available check box, as
changing this value updates the general info tab when the VM is being
clicked.

Might this be a bug ?

I am using CentOS 6.3 with dreyou's repo, and the rpm packs I have
installed on the node controller are:

Re: [Users] Ovirt Node install to USB stick - required 70GB disk space?

2013-01-08 Thread Alexandru Vladulescu

Hi,

I have 2 hypervisors running on 2 usb 3.0 sticks and the a swap daemon running
on a NFS share export.

The daemon only creates swap space when needed, so I have not used the swap
partition during the os install on the usbs.

Each physical server has 32gb of ram.

So far i did not experienced any performance degradation.

Sorry for not asnwering to the list, here are my previous post:

How much memory do you have? It seems that it's calculating how much
swap it will need and turns that needs at least 70 GB disk space.

There is a thread in this forum that has the calculations that ovirt
does for it. You can change this values on the boot options.

 Alex
Those values are also shown on the installer screen right before entering
the password and can be changed

As sometimes searching the list can be a pain, I'll just repost it:

You can do this with 2 different methods, both of which are on the kernel
command line during boot. Simply hit TAB when you're selecting the install
option and add one of the options below to the command line.

 1. You can set storage_vol=:XXX where XXX is the desired size of
the SWAP partition in MB. It has a minimum size of 5MB.
This lets you set a static size for swap.

 2. You can set mem_overcommit=0. This will change our calculation to not
add any swap for overcommit. It will still calculate a value based on the
amount of RAM, but not as large as with the overcommit.

The swap size is calculated at mem_overcommit*RAM + BASE_SWAP

BASE_SWAP is calculated using this formula:

 if MEM_SIZE 4GB:
 BASE_SWAP = 2GB
 elif MEM_SIZE 16GB:
 BASE_SWAP = 4GB
 elif MEM_SIZE 64GB:
 BASE_SWAP = 8GB
 else:
 BASE_SWAP = 16GB

We are planning to expose these option in the TUI installer, just not there
 yet.

[Users] Storage domain mount options

2013-01-08 Thread Alexandru Vladulescu

Hello Guys,

I would like to ask you help for the following problem I am facing right
now.

As we know, on the Storage tab we can configure storage domains in many
types. I am using NFS, and when configuring a such export on the
Advanced Parameters section we can only adjust the NFS version, Retrans
and Timeout.

After a successful configuration setup, on all hypervisors I have the
mount share declared attached. The result of mount for the share
datastore looks like below:

nas01.net:/datastore01/nas01.ISO on
/rhev/data-center/mnt/nas01.net:_datastore01_nas01.ISO type nfs
(rw,soft,nosharecache,timeo=10,retrans=6,vers=4,addr=10.20.30.10,clientaddr=10.20.30.102)

All good and sound but how can I tune the NFS mounting command, for
example let's say adding noatime value to the mount option list ?

Many thanks,
Alex.

Re: [Users] Storage domain mount options

2013-01-08 Thread Alexandru Vladulescu

Dear Shu,

Exactly what I was saying, in that section we can only change in the
Advanced Parameters the NFS version, the Retransmissions and the Timeout.

Therefore I see exactly no field for additional mount options.

As I know there is a thread on the mailing list about the new features
that should be included in the 3.2 version release. I think would be
useful to include this one too to the GUI, but again my question, how
could this be modified in the stable 3.1 release ?

Hello Guys,

I would like to ask you help for the following problem I am facing
right now.

As we know, on the Storage tab we can configure storage domains in
many types. I am using NFS, and when configuring a such export on the
Advanced Parameters section we can only adjust the NFS version,
Retrans and Timeout.

After a successful configuration setup, on all hypervisors I have the
mount share declared attached. The result of mount for the share
datastore looks like below:

nas01.net:/datastore01/nas01.ISO on
/rhev/data-center/mnt/nas01.net:_datastore01_nas01.ISO type nfs
(rw,soft,nosharecache,timeo=10,retrans=6,vers=4,addr=10.20.30.10,clientaddr=10.20.30.102)

New domain --- Advanced Parameters.

Many thanks,
Alex.

Re: [Users] What do you want to see in oVirt next?

2013-01-03 Thread Alexandru Vladulescu

Dear Itamar,

I would like to add a request for the new upper coming version 3.2 if
possible:

Although some of you use spice instead of VNC, as I am an Ubuntu user on
my desktop and laptop, spice protocol is not working withing my OS; even
if I tried to build it from source, search unofficial deb packs or
convert if from rpm packages. I know spice is strongly supported on the
Fedora community, but I, myself on the server side work on RH Enterprise
and Centos, but as for desktop use, I have a very hard time make the
spice plugin for firefox to work.

Therefore for my solution I had setup a VNC reflector + some shell
automation to make it work between 2 different subnets (one inside and
one outside) -- this, somehow, adding to the initial scope.

This would have been much more easier to have a VNC proxy inside the
ovirt engine function, from where to make the necessary setups and
assignments of the console to each VM, or even though I might sound
funny to make a solution as vrde on Vbox, because works damn great and
it's easy to setup or change.

Last question, If I might ask, when is the 3.2 planned to be released
(aprox)?

Cordially,
Alex.

Hi Everyone,

as we wrap oVirt 3.2, I wanted to check with oVirt users on what they

[Users] ovirt 3.1 vnc passwordless setup

2012-12-19 Thread Alexandru Vladulescu

Hi guys,

I am running Ovirt 3.1 (fresh install -- no upgrade) on some Centos 6.3
servers; and I did a small setup regarding 2 hypervisors, 1 node
controller and 1 NAS server providing NFS export, storage ISO domains
for the appliances.

All this solution has one server more that's acting as a firewall and
traffic policy shaping in front of the network setup.

The problem that I am facing right now, is that I am trying to setup
Ovirt on VNC remote connection in the manner that does not require
password login with 120 seconds expiration timeout. Somehow I would like
to map VNC ports on the 2 hypervisor nodes to bond with a vnc reflector
installed on the node controller, which also acts as a VPN server on the
setup for out-band connections.

Therefore, users connecting over VPN could get access to the VNC of the
VMs without entering the web portal and requiring an active VNC password
with 120 seconds expiration time.

I tried digging through the libvirtd.conf and qemu.conf configuration
files, found some VNC parameters but none seemed to do the job for my
purpose. I must mention that I have been looking for a similar setup on
the Ovirt documentation page as well as googlin' it.

You help will be much appreciated.

My regards,
Alex Vladulescu
