[ovirt-users] Q: oVirt guest agent + spice-vdagent on Debian 11 Bullseye

2021-10-29 Thread Andrei Verovski
Hi,

Anyone have compiled these deb packages for Debian 11 Bullseye?
oVirt guest agent + spice-vdagent

Packages from Buster can’t be installed on Bullseye because of broken libnl
dependencies.

Thanks in advance.

[ovirt-users] Re: Q: Get Host Capabilities Failed after restart

2021-08-10 Thread Andrei Verovski
Hi,

For whatever weird reason "kill -3 ” produced NO output in
console.log.
After downgrading vdsm with backport fix and restart of oVier engine problem
fixed. I did restart of node several times - everything seem to be fine for now.

Current content of console.log.

[ovirt-users] Q: Strange ping timeouts/network issues when 1 node is down

2021-07-12 Thread Andrei Verovski
Hi,

I have observed strange ping timeouts/network issues when one of nodes is down,
for example, for RAM upgrade.
Powering up and connecting node back solves this.
Each node have 2 networks (connected to different Ethernet interfaces),
ovirtmgmt 192.168.0.xxx and DMZ 192.168.1.x.

Additionally, time consuming operations like VM cloning causes increase of ping
latency to ALL nodes from local workstations.
VM cloning should load only 1 node but it should not affect the whole ovirt
mgmt network on all nodes.

How to fix this issue?
Thanks in advance for any help.
Andrei

My nodes run on natively installed CentOS, not factory oVirt node images,
because of necessary RAID drivers and custom scripts (for example, in case of
power failure which is over 5 min they loop through all running VMS and
shutdown them gracefully, then shutdown node itself, + RAID monitoring script
which sends notifications on Telegram messenger).

This seem to be my case. Anyone from oVirt team can confirm? Thanks.

Hi,

OK, thanks for the tip.
I always upgraded nodes via oVirt web interface, which is now 4.4.7, and
I assume it can't update node 4.2 -> 4.3, because 4.3 is too old. Please
correct if I'm wrong here.

May I use these commands to safely upgrade nodes manually?

yum check-update
yum clean all
yum update
yum remove ovirt-release42
yum install

[ovirt-users] Q: Node host becomes non-operational after upgrade

2021-07-06 Thread Andrei Verovski

Hi,

Today I upgraded oVirt Engine to 4.4.7.6, and then one of the nodes
(running Centos Stream).

After upgrade node (node14) becomes non-operational. Same after “Reinstall”.

Additionally, there are MANY error messages:
Host node14 moved to Non-Operational state as host CPU type is not
supported in this cluster compatibility version or is not supported at all

Quite strange, before upgrade problem with CPU host type didn't exist.
vdsm-networking service is running fine on node14.
vdsmd running but have this error message:
Jul 06 21:19:23 node14.xxx sudo[3565]: pam_systemd(sudo:session): Failed
to create session: Start job for unit user-0.slice failed with 'canceled'

I suspect that there are unnecessary repos enabled in my CentOS stream
node, which leads to this kind of errors.

Please can anyone check? Thanks in advance.

[ovirt-users] /var/log has less then 500MB free space left on

2021-06-21 Thread Andrei Verovski
Hi,

I started to get messages that /var/log has less then 500MB free space left on
out of 8GB.
du -h —max-depthh=1
reveals that openswitch log dir consumes 3.6GB, there are files as old as 2018.
Node software was installed on fresh CentOS 7.xx from oVirt admin web console.

I cleaned this directory, yet question remain - why logrotate service is not
running by default on oVirt node?
Or this is not recommended?

Thanks in advance.

[ovirt-users] Re: Q: Sparsify/fstrim don't reduce actual disk image size

2021-04-08 Thread Andrei Verovski
Hi,

Many thanks, its worked ! Actual size shrunk from 584 to 9 GB, now I have space
to backup.

Is there any guidelines how to format QCOW2 images (for Linux) so they can be
shrunk in an efficient way?
With this NextCloud/Collabora LVM I did in the following order:
swap
ext2 boot
ext4 root
ext4 var (large, for data, all cloud data stored here)

Ext4 partitions on LVM.

Or this is not predictable how data will span QCOW2 space?

[ovirt-users] Q: Sparsify/fstrim don't reduce actual disk image size

2021-04-07 Thread Andrei Verovski
Hi !

I have VM (under oVirt) with single disk thin provision (~600 GB) running
NextCloud on Debian 9.
Right now VM HD is almost empty. Unfortunately, it occupies 584 GB (virtual
size = 600 GB)
All partition (except swap and boot) are EXT4 with discard option. in oVirt
“enable discard = on”.

# fstrim -av runs successfully:
/var: 477.6 GiB (512851144704 bytes) trimmed on /dev/mapper/vg--system-lv4--data
/boot: 853.8 MiB (895229952 bytes) trimmed on /dev/mapper/vg--system-lv2--boot
/: 88.4 GiB (94888611840 bytes) trimmed on /dev/mapper/vg--system-lv3—sys

When fstrim runs again, it trims zero. I even run “Sparsify” in oVirt.
Unfortunately, actual size is still 584 GB.

Here is /etc/fstab
/dev/mapper/vg--system-lv3--sys / ext4
discard,noatime,nodiratime,errors=remount-ro 0 1
/dev/mapper/vg--system-lv2--boot /boot ext2defaults0
 2
/dev/mapper/vg--system-lv4--data /varext4
discard,noatime,nodiratime 0 2
/dev/mapper/vg--system-lv1--swap noneswapsw 0
 0

When disk was partitioned/formatted, swap and boot were created first and
positioned at the beginning.

What is wrong here? Is it possible to fix all this ?

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

Does all this mean oVirt will be sometime and somehow merged with

Its not that easy since OKD designed primarily for Kubernetes/Docker

Or oVirt may be considered just another abandonware within 2+ years?

What is the benefit to Red Hat / IBM of supporting this platform now that it is
no longer being commercialized as a Red Hat product? What is to prevent Red Hat

As a user of oVirt (4.5, installed on Red Hat 8.3), how can I and others help

From what I've seen, this is a great product, and I guess I can understand Red

Hi,

I’ve got around this.
Simply created new logical network, buggy should NOT be deleted, simply rename

[ovirt-users] Setup Hosts Network Disabled

2021-03-09 Thread Andrei Verovski
Hi !

I run into a problem which looks like a software bug.

Network -> Networks -> My_Net_Name -> Hosts
Setup Hosts Network button is disabled (greyed out). I deleted this network,
created again, restarted hosted engine - no changes.

Is it possible to fix this for example from command line ?

Thanks in advance.

If you mean Native Open vSwitch as described here we don’t use it.
https://www.ovirt.org/develop/release-management/features/network/openvswitch/native-openvswitch.html

Current setup is simple 2-node and unfortunately I'm not aware of all deep
details of oVirt networking.
Since oVirt uses KVM as underlying technology I assume it uses bridged
networking to connect VMs and physical interfaces.
Each our server uses 2 Ethernet connections, 1 for internal LAN 192.168.0.xxx
and 2nd for DMZ 192.168.1.xxx.
If so I assumed that it could not be a problem to bridge VM to external IP via
3rd Ethernet using oVirt networking.
May be its enough to turn on “isolated port” and VM Interface Profile to
“clean-traffic”?

Please correct if I'm wrong here

If you mean migration from oVirt local storage setup to full featured network

[ovirt-users] Strange Glitches with VM and Network (oVirt 4.4.4.7-1.el8)

2021-03-09 Thread Andrei Verovski
Hi,

I’m running oVirt 4.4.4.7-1.el8 and need to connect one of the VMs straight to
the ISP link via Ethernet cable.
oVirt already have 2 networks (ovirt mgmt local + DMZ).
Created new network provider and assigned to it available physical interface of
HP ProLiant, connected via cable to ISP switch with public IP.
Options of this network: (VM Network = on, Port Isolation = off, NIC Type =
VirtIO, the rest are defaults).
VM is Debian 10.

Link works but with strange artefacts. If VM left being idle for a while, it
cant be connected or pinged from outside, until I initiate pings from VM itself.
I have only 2 IPs from this ISP so I’m sure there are no IP address conflicts.
Another port and public IP go to our VyOS router handling internal and DMZ zone.

How to fix this problem ?
Thanks in advance.
Andrei

[ovirt-users] Q: oVirt 4.4.4.7 Node settings on CentOS Stream

2021-01-14 Thread Andrei Verovski
Hi !

I’m installing new oVirt 4.4.4 node on CentOS Stream and its seems there are
some changes since older node on CentOS 7.x.

1) NFS shares for storage domain.
In 7.x I used
chown -Rv nfsnobody:nfsnobody /vmraid/nfs; chmod -Rv 755 /vmraid/nfs
In Stream nfsnobody don’t exists, should I use:
chown -Rv nobody:nobody /vmraid/nfs; chmod -Rv 777 /vmraid/nfs

Is that correct settings?

2) SELinux seems to be more permissive now, looks like I don’t have to tweak it
to have my custom cron and SNMP scripts running.
Yes, SELinux is running, getenforce -> yields “Enforcing”.

Will oVirt sw node installation change this behaviour?

Thanks in advance

Hi,

I’m currently adding new oVirt node to existing 4.4 setup.
Which underlying OS version would you recommend for long-term deployment -
CentOS 8 or Stream ?

I don’t use pre-built node ISO since I have a number of custom scripts running

Thanks in advance.

[ovirt-users] Upgrade Problem oVirt engine 4.4.1.8-1.el8 -> 4.4.3

2020-11-11 Thread Andrei Verovski
Hi !

I’m trying to upgrade oVirt engine 4.4.1.8-1.el8 to the latest 4.4.3, running
as KVM appliance (not hosted engine).

This sequence of commands

yum install https://resources.ovirt.org/pub/yum-repo/ovirt-release44.rpm
engine-upgrade-check
yum update ovirt\*setup\*

How to properly determine value “ run_on_vds” ? Is this node UUID?

Thanks.

[ovirt-users] VM Struck in Shutdown Mode

2020-11-03 Thread Andrei Verovski
Hi,

I have oVirt 4.4 engine and v4.2 nodes.

On one node newly created VM struck in shutdown mode (with green round recycle
icon) - I can’t anything, neither power off neither shutdown, both operation
fail (with no explanation). This VM have no value whatsoever, but I can’t
delete it either.

Restarted oVirt engine, all same.

Process list (on node) clearly shows absence of this VM as KVM process. VM is
down.

How to reset its status in oVirt?

Thanks in advance.

[ovirt-users] Q: Failed creating snapshot

2020-10-30 Thread Andrei Verovski
Hi,

I have oVirt 4.4 with nodes 4.2.8

Attempt to create snapshot failed with:
EventID 10802 VDSM node11 command SnapshotVDS failed: Message timeout can be
caused by communication issues.
Event ID 2022 Add-disk operation failed to complete.

However, snapshot is on disk since VM now takes 1200GB instead of 500.
Yes snapshot list in VM details is empty.

How to recover disk space occupied by unsuccessful snapshot ?
I looked at /vmraid/nfs/disks/--xxx/images

and there are no distinctive files which I can identify as snapshot.

Thanks in advance.

Yes, ovirt built-in backup/restore

engine-backup --mode=restore --log=restore1.log

Database local, not remote.
I had a prompt for postgresql password during install.

oVirt Engine 4.4 fresh install on CentOS 8.2 appliance, with these command,
instruction from official web site, then restore from backup (snippet above)

yum install https://resources.ovirt.org/pub/yum-repo/ovirt-release44.rpm
yum module -y enable javapackages-tools
yum module -y enable pki-deps
yum module -y enable postgresql:12
yum install postgresql-server postgresql-contrib
postgresql-setup --initdb
systemctl enable postgresql; systemctl start postgresql

su - postgres -c psql
create role engine with login encrypted password ‘my password';
create role ovirt_engine_history with login encrypted password 'my password';

create database engine owner engine template template0 encoding 'UTF8'
lc_collate 'en_US.UTF-8' lc_ctype 'en_US.UTF-8';
create database ovirt_engine_history owner ovirt_engine_history template

[ovirt-users] oVirt 4.4 Engine data migration & GUI notes

2020-07-22 Thread Andrei Verovski
Hi !

I have installed new oVirt 4.4 Engine (as separate entity, not hosted engine)
and migrated data from old 4.3 installation.
Everything went smooth.

Q: Which PostgreSQL password now active - new one I entered during install or
old which could migrate with old data?

I noticed GUI changes straight on dashboard.
Icons on top (data centres, clusters, hosts, etc) are simply put, too huge.
This serves no useful purpose whatsoever, and consumes screen real estate for
no reason.
Decreasing their size by 2/3 will help to make 1st page more informative at 1st
sight without extra scrolling.

with best regards
Andrei

Is it possible to check by list admins?

[ovirt-users] oVirt 4.3 -> 4.4 Upgrade Path Questions

2020-07-07 Thread Andrei Verovski
Hi !

I have 2-node oVirt 4.3 installation, with engine running as KVM guest on SuSE
file server (not hosted engine).
Nodes are manually installed on CentOS 7.x (further referred as old node #1 and
#2).

I’m going to add 1 additional node, and migrate system to CentOS 8.2 / oVirt
4.4.

Is this correct roadmap, or something can be done in a better way? Here is my
plan.

1) Upgrade oVirt Hosted Engine running under KVM / SuSE file server to CentOS
8.2 / oVirt 4.4.
Or its better to install from scratch new CentOS 8.2/oVirt 4.4 and migrate
database?

2) Install CentOS 8.2 and oVirt node 4.4 on new server (let’s name it node #3).
3) Migrate virtual machines from old node #1 to the new (#3).
4) Upgrade CentOS on old node #1 to v8.2, and oVirt from web interface. Will
that work, or upgrade CentOS 7 -> 8 will render this process unmanageable due
to removal of many components?
5) Migrate back virtual machines from node #3 to newly upgraded node #1.
6) Repeat step 4 and 5 for old node #2.

I have set of custom shell and python scripts running on engine and nodes, so
manual installation was a way to go.

Thanks in advance for any suggestion(s)

with best regards
Andrei

[ovirt-users] Re: Q: Fixing SELinux Permissions on oVirt node

2020-05-29 Thread Andrei Verovski
Hi,

SELinux is quite cumbersome for someone which not used it before.

stat /var/log/anvraidcheck.log
# File: ‘/var/log/anvraidcheck.log’
# Size: 75 Blocks: 8 IO Block: 4096 regular file
# Device: fd08h/64776dInode: 138 Links: 1
# Access: (0666/-rw-rw-rw-) Uid: (0/root) Gid: (0/root)
# Context: system_u:object_r:cron_log_t:s0

ps -eZ | grep snmpd
# system_u:system_r:snmpd_t:s0 1835 ?00:02:00 snmpd

How to enforce this policy (if its correct of course)?

allow snmpd_t cron_log_t:file { read };

[ovirt-users] Q: Fixing SELinux Permissions on oVirt node

2020-05-29 Thread Andrei Verovski
Hi !

I’m struggling with SELinux blocking SNMP script from reading log file (oVirt
node manually installed on CentOS 7).
Log file is readable by all (chmod ugo+r).

Scripts working fine when executed from terminal.

I did not dig deep into CentOS internals, I’m mostly use Debian and SuSE. As
far as I know, SELinux can’t be turned off on oVirt node.

Thanks in advance for any suggestion(s).

[ovirt-users] oVirt engine / node & snmp

2020-05-11 Thread Andrei Verovski
Hi,

oVirt node seems to run snmp by defeult, “service snmpd status” returns some
data.
I’m going to connect all servers to LibreNMS, and it requires custom snmp
options.
What options I should keep in oVirt node default nsmp.conf? Or I may just fully
overwrite this file with my own?

Please note my oVirt node installed manually on CentOS, I don’t use node DVD
image from oVirt project.

with best regards
Thanks in advance.

Are all log files located on hosted engine ?
Or something needs to be taken from node PC ?

[ovirt-users] Create New VM from Template Glitch

2019-06-05 Thread Andrei Verovski
Hi !

Looks like there is some strange glitch creating new VM from template on oVirt
4.2.8.2.

Basically I’m need to convert disk image from QCOW2 thin allocated to raw
format in an existing VM.
These are steps performed:
1) Create snapshot of an existing VM.
2) Make template from snapshot.
3) Create new VM using template, in Resource Allocation -> Storage Allocation
-> Clone  -> Format -> Raw.

Unfortunately, newly created VM still have QCOW2 thin allocated disk.
Did this operation twice to be sure, and both times things went wrong.

What is done wrong, and how to solve this problem?
Thanks in advance.

[ovirt-users] Q: Is it safe to execute on node "saslpasswd2 -a libvirt username" ?

2019-01-23 Thread Andrei Verovski

Hi !

Is it safe to execute on oVirt node this command ?
saslpasswd2 -a libvirt username

Its a production environment, screwing up anything is not an option.
I have no idea how VDSM interacts with libvirt, so not sure about this.

Thanks in advance

[ovirt-users] Q: "virsh list" on oVirt node

2019-01-23 Thread Andrei Verovski
Hi !

“virsh” can’t be executed on oVirt node directly due to authentication problem.
Only "virsh —readonly” are working.

Someone have recommended adding new password with this:
saslpasswd2 -a libvirt username

I know this is somewhat depreciated to hacking directly into oVirt node yet I’m
still need this.

What is correct, non-destructive to accomplish this?
Thanks in advance.

Its not a single quirk with a Mac - spice console also don't work.

Apologies if this has been asked before, but Google came up empty for me.

Recently converted to a Macbook, I've noticed an issue with the oVirt

multiple machines at the same time. CNTL+click in macOS sends a right
click to the interface, and no combination of OPTION/CONTROL/CMD
works. Tried on Chrome, Firefox and Safari.

SHIFT+click works on selecting multiple hosts when they are all in a
row, but random select via CMD+click doesn't.

A nudge in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

[ovirt-users] RAID L1/L5/L10 + NFS Loopback Benchmarks

2018-11-18 Thread Andrei Verovski

Hi !

I run a series of benchmarks with IOZONE testing performance of
different RAID configurations on HP ProLiant DL380 + impact of NFS loopback.

NFS loopback is necessary even for very small systems (e.g. just 2
nodes), since oVirt local storage setup is limited to single (only one)
node per data center and this is quite useless from the point of view of
functionality.

[ovirt-users] Q: Guest shutdown from UPS power off signal with "virsh"

2018-11-08 Thread Andrei Verovski
Hi !

I have a shell script running on all servers which intercepts power off signal
(in case of power failure).

Is it safe to use direct KVM “virsh” commands to force guest shutdown on oVirt
nodes, bypassing oVirt engine ?

“shutdown now” directly on oVirt nodes v4.2.6 takes an enormous amount of time
because for whatever reason guests can’t be suspended. My nodes installed on
CentOS 7.5, I’m not using pre-packaged version because each consecutive upgrade
simply wipes out all my mods.

Thanks in advance.

[ovirt-users] Tutorial for beginners: oVirt - moving away from local storage setup to NFS/GlusterFS

2018-10-23 Thread Andrei Verovski
Hi,

I made short video tutorial (slide show with screenshots and instruction) for
beginners:
oVirt - moving away from local storage setup to shared/networked one (main
currently uses NFS loopback).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ebhZ5U6x_Y

Hopefully someone may avoid common mistakes, and if not, remedy situation with
minimal time and effort.

Feedback and comments are welcome.

with best regards
Andrei

Use CentOS 7.5 for node installation, and upgrade kernel to 4.xx from EPEL
repository.
Should work if kernel driver is there.
Stock oVirt node install wipes out all changes upon upgrade.

[ovirt-users] Re: ovirt - in docker

2018-10-10 Thread Andrei Verovski

Hi,

I'm running Ovirt Engine under CentOS KVM guest installed on qcow2 image
on SuSE Linux host (actually corporate file server), VMs managed by
Virtual Machine Manager GUI (virt-manager).

On Debian, Ubuntu or CentOS  you can use Cockpit web GUI for same purpose

Disk image backed up weekly to another hard drive, and if necessary,
moved to any other Linux distro with minimal effort.

Not exactly what you are looking for, but quite close.
Same can be done with Virtual Box.

Hi,

Try to upload qcow into import domain via SSH, may be it will work, but I’m not

Another way is to hack oVirt - create VM with qcow2 image, rename yours,
replace via ssh, fix permissions.

Hi,

Try this:

1) Storage -> Disks -> Upload -> Start
select your existing qcow image

2) Create new VM, and then General -> Instance Images, clock "+" and
"Attach", select imported disk image.

I think it should work.

PS Someone from oVirt dev team please confirm, I didn't tried import
existing qcow2.

[ovirt-users] Q: Power failure - proper data center shutdown procedure

2018-07-26 Thread Andrei Verovski
Hi,

I have the following simple setup:

oVirt engine - 4.2.3 (running as KVM appliance on SuSE Linux)
node1.1 - 4.2.1 (installed with clean CentOS and newer elrepo 4.15.4-1el1
kernel)
node1.2 - 4.2.3 (installed with clean CentOS and newer elrepo 4.16.2-1el7
kernel)

VMs - Debian, CentOS, and Windows guests, with ovirt-agent installed (except
one with Linux telephony software).

What is the proper shutdown procedure in case of power failure?
I have simple scripts which simply run “shutdown now” on each host after 10 min.

However, oVirt nodes fail to shutdown properly, process take about 25 minutes.

node1.2
libvirt-guests.sh[10696]: Waiting for guest GUEST_VM_NAME to shut down

node1.1 - these processes took VERY LONG time:
Unmounting /rhev/data-center/mnt/node11.mydomain.com:_vm_raid_nfs_export…
Unmounting /rhev/data-center/mnt/node12.mydomain.com:_vm_raid_nfs_disks…
Unmounting /rhev/data-center/mnt/node11.mydomain.com:_vm_raid_nfs_disks…
Unmounting /rhev/data-center/mnt/node11.mydomain.com:_vm_raid_nfs_iso…

on both nodes:
[] Forcibly powering off: job timed out

as result, OS is down, server is not, still drawing power from UPS battery.

Powering on was problematic, I had to restart node11 2nd time before it becomes
“green” in oVirt engine.
One VM failed to start with error message “Can’t acquire ticket” and struck
with grey arrows (with no possibilty to make anything) - unfortunately, I
forgot to take screenshot or record exact message. Restarting node1.1 cured
that problem.

Q: what is proper oVirt data center automatic shutdown procedure?

Thanks in advance
Andrei

Run continues (2+ hours, random + sequential read/write) iozone tests (in a
loop) before launching system on these SSD RAID.
You may be lucky or may be not.

You can also set shared volume on (at least) 2 x external SAN, NAS, NFS server,
whatever.

Don’t think there are gluster-optimized settings.
Run iozone tests to find optimal settings depending on your workload.

[ovirt-users] Re: Raid configuration for single instance

2018-07-16 Thread Andrei Verovski
Hi, Leo,

I would recommend the following configuration:
RAID1 120GB for the OS and oVirt software
RAID10 (GB whatever you need) for VM data
I tested RAID5 it appears slower then RAID10.

Please note consumer SSD may appear to work with SAS RAID controller yet
actually they DO NOT !
Load them with IOZONE stress test, and you will see complete freeze, and in
case of OS install on these SSD, unbootable dead system.

I tested consumer WD and KingFast SATA SSD, with both HP and 3Ware/Broadcom SAS
RAID cards, all of them failed IOZONE stress test.
BTW, you can buy 120GB used SAS server disks on ebay for something close to
nothing.
Conventional (mechanical) SATA hard drives work fine with SAS RAID cards (at
least in my case).

For single server you don’t need glusterfs, nfs is enough.

[ovirt-users] Add new node failure - 2nd network (DMZ)

2018-04-16 Thread Andrei Verovski
Hi,

I have simple cluster with node11 having 2nd network for DMZ zone (for internet
servers). This network attached to node11 2nd ethernet adapter called
‘DMZ_node11’.

Now I’m trying to add 2nd host to the cluster (node12).
Attempt to activate newly added node12 results in this error.
Host node12 does not comply with the cluster ClusterRiga11 networks, the
following networks are missing on host: ‘DMZ_node11'

However, I found no way to add new host to the oVirt network ‘DMZ_node11’.
Network -> Networks -> DMZ_Node11 -> Setup Host Network lists only Ethernet
interfaces on node11, not on new node12.

Cluster is running, screwing something up is not an option.

How I can fix this problem ?

Thanks in advance.
Andrei

Can't tell fo sure about other installations, yet IMHO problem is with
networking schema.

One need to set bridge to real ethernet interface and add it to KVM VM
definition.

For example, my SuSE box have 2 ethernet cards, 192.168.0.aa for SMB fle
server and another bridged with IP 192.168.0.bb defined within KVM guest
(CentOS 7.4 with oVirt host engine). See configs below.

Another SuSE box have 10 Ethernet interfaces, one for for its own needs,
and 4 + 3 for VyOS routers running as KVM guests.

Re: [ovirt-users] Which hardware are you using for oVirt

2018-03-24 Thread Andrei Verovski
Hi,

HL ProLiant DL380, dual Xeon
120 GB RAID L1 for system
2 TB RAID L10 for VM disks
5 VMs, 3 Linux, 2 Windows
Total CPU load most of the time is  low, high level of activity related
to disk.
Host engine under KVM appliance on SuSE, can be easily moved, backed up,
copied, experimented with, etc.

You'll have to use servers with more RAM and storage than main.
More then one NIC required if some of your VMs are on different subnets,
e.g. 1 in internal zone and 2nd on DMZ.
For your setup 10 GB NICs + L3 Switch for ovirtmgmt.

BTW, I would suggest to have several separate hardware RAIDs unless you
have SSD, otherwise limit of the disk system I/O will be a bottleneck.
Consider SSD L1 RAID for heavy-loaded databases.

*Please note many cheap SSDs do NOT work reliably with SAS controllers
even in SATA mode*.

For example, I supposed to use 2 x WD Green SSD configures as RAID L1
for OS.
It was possible to install system, yet under heavy load simulated with
iozone disk system freeze, rendering OS unbootable.
Same crash was experienced with 512GB KingFast SSD connected to
broadcom/AMCC SAS RAID Card.

OK, now I’ve got it. Thanks for so clear and short explanation. It should go
straight into the oVirt manual and QA.

One Data Center can have only one Export storage domain, right ?

So 1 (single) export domain used as some kind of shared exchange buffer (VM
“clipboard” in desktop metaphor) in whole oVirt setup, per 1 host engine.

OK, that works, yet it really not intuitive.

Extra button in the top bar, something like “more options…”, or extra menu item
in popup at top right corner would be really helpful.

I can’t navigate to this point, in Storage -> Storage Domains there is a list
of domains as on your screenshot, which are double-clickable items.

3) In the export domain - navigate to 'VM Import’ tab

Double click on list item opens “Manage Domain” dialog.
Control-Click opens popup menu: “New Domain”, “Import Domain”, “Manage Domain”.

“Manage Domain” allows only edit of basic parameters.
Or I must add new domain by means of running “Import Domain”, and then go to
the points you have described ?

Running FireFox on Mac and Linux. Is it possible it doesn’t display something
correctly.
What browser you use ?

[ovirt-users] Q: Copying VMs between Export domains of different data centres

2018-03-20 Thread Andrei Verovski
Hi,

I have 2 data centers (with 1 node each because 1 have local data domain)

Copied exported from DC #1, exports -> 1d7208ce-d3a1-4406-9638-fe7051562994 ->
images -> 12f48f07-7e93-4c66-b0e9-00efc1fec418, with 2 files inside
fc469474-94fd-416b-b921-58604f46411c - 171 GB (seems like disk image)
fc469474-94fd-416b-b921-58604f46411c.meta

to DC #2, export -> 36bc8d5d-30e9-4df5-94cd-c837483c5e41 -> images ->
12f48f07-7e93-4c66-b0e9-00efc1fec418, with these above listed files inside.
(screenshot attached)

However, in “Import Virtual machine(s)” dialog this VM is not visible even
after running “Load” command inside import dialog.
Looks like for whatever reason oVirt don’t refresh content of this directory.

How to instruct oVirt to refresh and index these files?

Or this method won’t work at all, and one have to import/export OVA images, or
use lengthy procedure described by Fred Roland here ?

in 4.2

Storage -> Disks - exported image is not visible here
Storage -> Storage Domains -> Manage Domains - nothing that allows to see
content of domain

I can see content of Export domain only in “Import Virtual Machine(s)” dialog,
but can’t alter it in any way.

What I’m missing here ?

[ovirt-users] Q: Removing stuff from EXPORT domain

2018-03-20 Thread Andrei Verovski
Hi !

What is the proper oVirt way to remove unused stuff from EXPORT domain ?
Simply "rm -Rv xxx" and "rm -Rv xxx.meta"
via SSH inside export -> 1d7208ce-d3a1-4406-9638-fe7051562994 -> images ?

Thanks
Andrei

Sorry, didn't notice this problem solved only in pre-release 4.2.2
Then this:

1) upgrade engine as described here
https://www.ovirt.org/release/4.2.2/

2) login into ovirt engine, stop all VMs, choose host -> maintenance,
then upgrade node software.

[ovirt-users] Warning: CentOS Upgrade with Host Engine - 503 Service Temporarily Unavailable

2018-03-15 Thread Andrei Verovski
Hi !

I have upgraded CentOS 7.4 with oVirt 4.2.1 host engine (with yum upgrade), and
its resulted in broken system - "503 Service Temporarily Unavailable" when
connecting to the host engine via web.
Service ovirt-engine failed to starts (logs attached at the bottom of this
email), other ovirt services seem to run fine.

yum update "ovirt-*-setup*” (upgrade 4.2 -> 4.2.1)
engine-setup
yum upgrade (OS upgrade)

Is this issue somehow related to JDK as described here?
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1217023

New packages:
java-1.8.0-openjdk x86_64 1:1.8.0.161-0.b14.el7_4
java-1.8.0-openjdk-develx86_64 1:1.8.0.161-0.b14.el7_4
java-1.8.0-openjdk-headless x86_64 1:1.8.0.161-0.b14.el7_4

installed packages (seem to be also 1.8x):
[root@node00 ~]# rpm -qa | grep jdk
java-1.8.0-openjdk-1.8.0.151-5.b12.el7_4.x86_64
java-1.8.0-openjdk-devel-1.8.0.151-5.b12.el7_4.x86_64
java-1.8.0-openjdk-headless-1.8.0.151-5.b12.el7_4.x86_64
copy-jdk-configs-2.2-5.el7_4.noarch

Since my host engine is actually a KVM appliance under another SuSE server, I
simply discarded it and reverted back old qcow2 image.

So this is a warning to anyone - don’t upgrade CentOS, or at least keep a copy
of disk image before ANY upgrade !

2018-03-14 Thread Andrei Verovski
Hi !

After oVirt Engine 4.2 -> 4.2.1 Upgrade do I need to run these commands as
described in this article
https://www.ovirt.org/release/4.2.1/

su - postgres -c "scl enable rh-postgresql95 – psql -d engine"
postgres=# DROP FUNCTION IF EXISTS uuid_generate_v1();
postgres=# CREATE EXTENSION "uuid-ossp”;

BTW, this yelds error:
[root@node00 ~]# su - postgres -c "scl enable rh-postgresql95 – psql -d engine"
Unable to open /etc/scl/conf/–!

node00 is a dedicated PC with CentOS and oVirt Host Engine.

Thanks.

Hi !

Is this daemon (qemu-guest-agent) required on oVirt/KVM guest?
Or ovirt-guest-agent is enough ?

Thanks.

I'm using virtio-SCSI, Ubuntu thin provision disk formatted as ext4 boot
+ ext4 root + swap.
Disk image on ext4 RAID 1.

[ovirt-users] Weekly fstrim & Ubuntu 16.04 LTS guest freeze

2018-03-12 Thread Andrei Verovski
Hi !

I have stubborn VM (Ubuntu 16.04 LTS) which randomly freezes about each 2 - 3
weeks at weekends (when load is close to zero).
No updates or kernel upgrades help.
Freeze is not detected by oVirt watchdog and VM is not automatically restarted.

Since it happens only on weekends, I suspect some weekly cron job may cause
this.
Ubuntu 16.04 LTS is installed on qcow2 disk image (thin provision).
is it possible that fstrim (which discards / trims unused blocks) is a source
of this problem ?

Thanks in advance
Andrei

[ovirt-users] Auto-restart VM from Linux Shell

2018-03-11 Thread Andrei Verovski
Hi !

I have stubborn VM which time to time freezes, and watchdog for whatever
reason don't restart it.

Basically I would like to combine these 3 command into one script.

ovirt-shell -l https://node00.mydomain.com.lv/ovirt-engine/api
--ca-file="/etc/pki/ovirt-engine/ca.pem" -u "admin@internal" --password
"secret"

action vm MyVM stop
action vm MyVM start

Now I have problems.
1) Option --password "secret" is not recognized anymore in oVirt Shell 4.2.
2) What is the proper syntax to connect & run certain command in oVirt
Shell 4.2? Something like:

ovirt-shell -l https://node00.mydomain.com.lv/ovirt-engine/api
--ca-file="/etc/pki/ovirt-engine/ca.pem" -u "admin@internal" --password
"secret" && action vm MyVM stop

Thanks in advance

Re: [ovirt-users] Q: Can't connect to oVirt shell / SSL cert issue

2018-03-05 Thread Andrei Verovski
Hi,

Thanks,  corrected URL accepted.

However, I've run into SSL certificate issue:
ovirt-shell -l https://node00.mydomain.com/ovirt-engine/api --cert-file
/etc/pki/ovirt-engine/certs/engine.cer -u "admin@internal"

 ERROR
server CA certificate file must be specified for SSL secured connection.

certificate file exists, verified
/etc/pki/ovirt-engine/certs/engine.cer

without specifying SSL cert file its not possible to connect at all
 ERROR
No response returned from server. If you're using HTTP protocol
against a SSL secured server, then try using HTTPS instead.

Or I should use another certificate from same directory ?

Thanks.

2018-03-04 Thread Andrei Verovski
Hi !

I'm trying to connect via Bash from same machine where oVirt engine
installed
ovirt-shell --url=http://node00.mydomain.com/api -u admin
After entering password I've got:
=== ERROR ===
[404] - Not Found

What is wrong here?
Thanks in advance.

Re: [ovirt-users] Can't move/copy VM disks between Data Centers

2018-02-26 Thread Andrei Verovski
Hi,

Thanks for clarification. I’m using 4.2.
Anyway, I have to define another data center with shared storage domain (since
data center with local storage domain can have only 1 host), and the do what
you have described.

Is it possible to copy VM disks from 1 data center #1 local storage domain to
another data center #2 NFS storage domain, or need to use export storage domain
?

[ovirt-users] Q: VM disk speed penalty NFS vs Local data center storage

2018-02-26 Thread Andrei Verovski
Hi,

Since oVirt doesn’t support more then 1 host in data center with local storage
domain as described here:
http://lists.ovirt.org/pipermail/users/2018-January/086118.html
<http://lists.ovirt.org/pipermail/users/2018-January/086118.html>

I have to setup NFS server on node with VMs (on same node) access via NFS.
10 GB shared storage is in the future plans yet right now have only 2 nodes
with local RAID on each.

Q: What is VM disk speed penalty (approx %) NFS vs Local RAID in oVirt data
center storage?
Currently I have 2 VMs running our accounting/inventory control system which
are critical to storage performance limits.
2 other VMs have very low disk activity.

Thanks in advance
Andrei Verovski
