Hi,

Thanks for the reply back. Unfortunately, I don’t have the logs anymore as
we’ve already pulled those servers out of the rack to be used for other
services.

I think oVirt should be a little less “picky” if you will, on storage
connections. For example, this specific issue prevented anything storage
related from being done. Because the “master” was locked you cannot:

Add other storage
Activate hosts
Start VM’s
Reinitialize the datacenter
Remove storage

These points above a huge – while oVirt is indeed open source, upstream of RHEV
and doesn’t cost anything, I feel that in scenarios like this it could be the
downfall of oVirt itself being too risky.

The logging with oVirt seems to be crazy though – we’ve been testing it now for
about 2.5 years, maybe 3 years? Once oVirt gets in a state where it cannot
connect to something, it just goes haywire – many likely don’t see this
however, every time these things happened it when we’re testing failover
scenarios to see how oVirt responds.

A few recommendations I would make are:

Thank you for your recommendations. I agree with some, wholly disagree with
others.
I'd still appreciate if you could send us the requested logs.

TIA,
Y.

Drop the whole “master” storage thing – it complicates setting storage up.
Either connect, or don’t connect. If there’s connectivity issues, oVirt gets
hung up on switching to this “master” storage. If you have a single storage
domain, you’ll likely have problems as we’ve experienced because once oVirt
cannot find the “master” it begins to go berserk, then spirals out of control
there. It might not on small setups with a few hypervisors, but on an install
with a few hundred VM’s, large number of hypervisors etc, it seems to get ugly
real quick.

Stop trying to reconnect things, I think that’s what I’m looking for. When
something fails, oVirt just goes in a loop over and over which eventually
causes dashboard issues, crazy amounts of logs etc. It would be better if oVirt
would just stop, make a log entry and then quit, maybe after a few times.

In my case, I could mount the storage manually to ALL hosts, I could even force
start the VM’s with virsh. The oVirt dashboard just kept saying it was locked,
and wouldn’t let you do anything at all with the entire datacenter.

At this time, we’ve pushed these servers back into production using our current
hypervisor software which is stable but does not have the benefits of oVirt.
It’ll be revisited later on and is still in use for non-production things.

It’s back now – the issue is we’ve been testing it for the past year to year
and a half to eventually move into production starting immediately with about
100 VM’s. My concern is if there’s a break in connectivity to storage, nic
failure, switch failure or some other issue, oVirt goes berserk and it feels
like hours just to get the VM’s started back up.

At first I had to force umount the stale connections, that’s fine with a few
hosts, but we’re planning to have a large number of hosts and storage domains
and doing that across 10, 20, 40, 50 or large number of hypervisors manually
would be an issue.

> If so you can switch tabs while its doing its thing.

Nope, the browser locks up (all browsers) – the cursor goes from the little
hand cursor to the default pointer from the OS – can’t click anything, tabs
aren’t responsive etc. I can refresh the browser and get back in however, once
I click something, it does the same thing.

> In /share/ovirt-engine/ui-plugins there should be a file called
> dashboard.json, rename it to something that doesn't end in json and reload the

webadmin, that should disable the dashboard.

Does this disable the whole dashboard completely? IE can’t shutdown/boot VM’s
etc or is the dashboard.json controlling something else?

All that said, I am testing at the moment with a single storage device – all
flash, CentOS7 plain NFS – a yum update is what caused the break in storage
resulting in everything going haywire. I was able to get the main storage (3
domains, mapped to the same server for testing) by deleting the checksum in the
meta file.

Ideally, my final tests would be with multiple storage devices however, I’m out
of rack space for a few more days so I can only finish testing with the single
nas at the moment. Perhaps the single nas could be the root of the problem as
oVirt seems to always want some domain up to make the master.

Define insanely slow, is it putting up the spinner for loading? If so you can
switch tabs while its doing its thing.

Its not a known issue, but if you need to get at the VMs right now and the
dashboard is in your way, you can always disable the UI plugin that adds it.
But I suspect there is some other issue that is causing the problem.

In /share/ovirt-engine/ui-plugins there should be a file called
dashboard.json, rename it to something that doesn't end in json and reload the
webadmin, that should disable the dashboard.

Re: [ovirt-users] ovirtmgmt network change

2016-12-21 Thread Bill Bill
Hello,

I was able to get this sorted out by editing the IP’s in the database. After I
edited them so the engine could reconnect to the servers, I simply removed them
one by one and re-added them to the engine dashboard. So far, they are working
as expected.

psql engine -c "update vds_static update host_name = 'newIP' where gateway =
'oldIP';"

After, it complains about the networks being out of sync which is OK. Simply
reinstall the host – I had to remove them one by one first, add them back, then
I was able to resync the networks without issue.

Should this be used, always make a backup of the engine first.

Yes, but then that DNS becomes a very bad SPOF for your system, so not
a good idea for a production systems...

2016-12-18 Thread Bill Bill
Hi Dan,

Thanks for getting back to me & for your help. The script is 755 permissions
and oVirt sees it under the host hooks as well. The dump is below:

(I replaced our node IP with “mynodeIP” for privacy) I don’t see the IP’s from
the custom property listed in the dump and I also don’t see any errors in the

It should have been enough, but apparently something's missing.

Is the multiip script readable and executable?

Do you see any errors in vdsm.log when you start the VM?

Do you see the requested ips in the output of

Re: [ovirt-users] unexpected comma found at the end of DN string

2016-12-13 Thread Bill Bill
I was actually able to resolve this by renaming the corresponding files in the
/etc/pki/ovirt-engine/aaa directory and the extentions.d directory. Then, I
simply ran the ovirt-engine-extension-aaa-ldap-setup command and re-added the
AD back. The users were not affected since they were already in oVirt.

I have found that in the properties file, it stores the login information I
used to set the connection up. If I remove those, the error is generated. It
seems as though unless there’s a username/password stored in plain text in that
file, the AD connection will not work. Is this correct or are there some
variables that can be entered to use the info from the login fields?

could you please execute following command to get full logs from login flow and
share those logs?

  ovirt-engine-extensions-tool --log-level=FINEST aaa login-user
--profile= --user-name=

Please replace and according to your setup.

[ovirt-users] Add OS to Drop Down List

2016-12-11 Thread Bill Bill
Is it possible to add an item to the drop down list? We have a custom module
that integrates into our billing system via the API – it is pulling various
info from oVirt; fqdn, comments, name, IP, ram, architecture and OS. I’d like
to add if possible, a “friendly” name such as CentOS 7 vs having to set RHEL 7
as the API outputs rhel_7x64 and isn’t very visually appealing to our customers.

There seems to be an issue with assigning permissions. When creating a user, if
the user has “create” functionality for a VM, they can also delete the VM even
if “delete” is not checked. Is this by design or perhaps something that was
overlooked? Essentially, I want a user that can add/modify but not delete.

[ovirt-users] Windows Server 2008 & 2016 Drivers

Also, this is when “installing” Windows, going through the setup unless you
have an IDE disk, it will not see any other disks such as virtio or
virtio-scisi – so you cannot install it to get to the guest-tools unless you
set it up with IDE.

Re: [ovirt-users] xml config file being used in ovirt different from virsh?

It seems like when starting the VM through the oVirt dashboard, it’s either
overwriting or removing those values.

Subject: xml config file being used in ovirt different from virsh?

I have a VM with network filtering enabled, specifically the clean-traffic
filter.

Through virsh, I modify the configuration to reflect changes like this:

This only allows those two specified IP’s to communicate on the VM. I’ve
defined the xml through virsh.

Now, if I start the VM directly through virsh, those rules apply and work
correctly. I can add any other random IP from the same subnet and it does not
work, as expected. Only the two Ip’s specified above will respond.

This unfortunately, makes the VM appear to be down from with the ovirt
dashboard if it’s started manually through virsh.

If I edit the machine through virsh but do not start it and then go onto oVirt
to start the VM, it seems the configuration is not loaded – does oVirt load a
different configuration file other than /etc/libvirt/qemu/machine.xml?

Re: [ovirt-users] IP Address Stealing

2016-08-12 Thread Bill Bill
Cool. It looks like that works. Perhaps it would be good for oVirt to have a
few text fields in the nic properties to enter IP addresses into which can
match the rules being used. For example, when enabling the clean-traffic filter
it appears the VM can only have 1 IP address, even if another IP is added
legitimately, it still only works with the original IP address.

Something like this: http://i.imgur.com/9BUZRCN.jpg

So essentially, traffic would be blocked on that VM for any other IP space
other than the IP’s entered into the text fields, which then edit/work with the
netfilter rules. The idea would be to click “click to add more” would add
another text field.

Hello,

It is possible to prevent a VM from adding an IP? For example, if we provision
a VM with one IP, if the user has root access they can simply add random IP’s
from within the same range as sub interfaces: eth0:0 eth0:1 eth0:2 so on and so
forth.

Subnetting is not ideal in this situation because it’s a huge waste of IP space.

In oVirt 4.0, you can choose a vnic libvirt filter from a list (at the vnic
profile settings).
You can check the clean-traffic filter which uses multiple other more specific
filters.

[ovirt-users] vm pauses with "vm has paused due to unknown storage error

2016-06-23 Thread Bill Bill
Hello,

Have 3 nodes running both oVirt and Gluster on 4 SSD’s each. At the moment,
there are two physical nics, one has public internet access and the other is a
non-routable network used for ovirtmgmt & gluster.

In the logical networks, I have selected gluster for the nonroutable network
running ovirtmgmt and gluster however, two VM’s randomly pause for what seems
like no reason. They can both be resumed without issue.

One test VM has 4GB of memory and a small disk – no problems with this one. Two
others have 800GB disks and 32GB of RAM – both vm’s exhibit the same issue.

I also see these in the oVirt dashboard:

[ovirt-users] OpenStack Horizon provision to oVirt / front end

2016-06-02 Thread Bill Bill
Is it possible for OpenStack Horizon to be used as a front end for oVirt to
view, manage and/or provision VM’s?

[ovirt-users] Neutron appliance & Cloud-init - no bootable device

2016-05-29 Thread Bill Bill
Hello,

Trying to configure the Neutron appliance however, when running cloud-init to
attempt to set a root password or another user password, the VM simply boots to
a “no bootable device” state. Without cloud-init, the VM boots however, have no
idea what the default root login is.

I’ve also tried booting into single user mode which also fails – has this
Neutron appliance and cloud-init been tested for v 3.6?

[ovirt-users] Hosted engine setup fails - system unreliable

2016-05-20 Thread Bill Bill
I’ve tried over & over on fresh installs to setup the hosted engine VM however,
each time, it fails. No clue as to what the problem is as it just says “this
system is unreliable”.

[ovirt-users] oVirt & gluster - which copy is written to?

2016-05-16 Thread Bill Bill
Hello,

Let’s say I have a 5 node converged cluster of oVirt & glusterFS with a replica
count of “3”.

Host1 - replica
Host2 - replica
Host3 - replica
Host4
Host5

If I spin a VM up on Host1 – does the first replica get created local to that
server?

In the event I move the VM to another host, does the replica of the disk follow
the VM so essentially it’s writing to a local copy first or does it “always”
write across the network.

For example, with VMware, the disk will follow the VM to the hypervisor you
move it to so that the writes are essentially “local”.

I have not been able to find anything on the internet or in the documentation
that specifies how this process works. Ideally, you wouldn’t want a VM residing
on Host1 that accesses its disk on Host3. Multiple that by hundreds of VM’s and
it would create a ton of unnecessary network congestion.
