FYI,

It seems jira.ovirt.org redirect doesn't work, since we don't own the jira
instance ( cloud provided by Attlasian ) it might be a change done on their
side.
We'll investigate and check possible solutions.

Until then, please use the full URL for the JIRA instance -

Also, the repos weren't down, its just the release rpms, so I don't see a
reason to communicate it more than it was already, but just in case any of
the users got affected, I'm adding this thread to the users list as well.

This might break the upgrade suite from 4.0->master ( upstream from
prev-release ), should we remove it from CI and not test upgrades from
4.0->master?
It will also break upgrade from 4.0->4.1 suite, should we remove it as

[ovirt-users] oVirt services outage last Friday [ 21/04/17 ]

2017-04-23 Thread Eyal Edri
FYI,

During last Friday the data center which oVirt services are hosted on had a
major outage which affected some of the oVirt services, like the CI, e-mail
and oVirt repositories.

All systems should be up by now, although, since one the services which
were affected was e-mail, it might be that your emails are still in the
queue waiting to be sent.

If you still experiencing any service downtime, please report to
infra-supp...@ovirt.org.
We are working with the IT team of the DC to get the full RCA will report
once we have more info.

Thanks for the understanding and sorry for the inconvenience,

[ovirt-users] The feature everyone was asking for is finally here...

2017-01-04 Thread Eyal Edri
FYI,

After many requests from multiple developers and testers, the oVirt CI
added a new simple job that lets you run the full fledged end-to-end oVirt
system tests with a click of a button.
You can read all the details and how-to in the new oVirt blog [1].

We wanted to allow running oVirt system tests on EVERY open patch from ANY
oVirt project, without relaying on complex building code inside the job.
Luckily we just added the 'build-on-demand' so together with it you can
build any rpms you'd like and use them to run the manual job.

So the 2 steps you'll need to do are:

   1. Write 'ci please build' inside a comment on an open oVirt patch (
make sure the feature is enabled for that project first, its already
   available for ovirt-engine,vdsm,dashboard and vdsm-jsonrpc-java)
   2. Run the manual OST job for the version you'd like to test with the
   URLs you got from #1

You'll get and email once the job is done and you can browse the results
and check for logs from engine and the hosts.

Please feel free to ask questions on in...@ovirt.org as usual.

[ovirt-users] ovirt.org is back online

2016-12-25 Thread Eyal Edri
The site is back online thanks for Duck in helping clearing the log files
which caused the gear to get stuck.

I understood that the site is planned to move to another location, with
more storage so hopefully these kind of outage will be rare soon after.

[ovirt-users] News from oVirt CI: Introducing 'build-on-demand'

2016-12-21 Thread Eyal Edri
FYI,

Following last announcement on the manual build from patch job [1], we got
some feedback and
requests from developers on ability to improve the flow of building
artifacts from a patch.

I'm happy to announce that after some coding, the infra team was able to
add a new feature
to the 'standard CI' framework, that will allow any oVirt project to build
rpms from any VERSION or OS DISTRO using a single comment in the patch.

Full details can be found on the new oVirt blog 'ci please build' [2], but
to give the TL;DR version here,
All you have to do is write '*ci please build*' on a comment and CI will
trigger a job for you with new RPMs (or tarballs).

The projects which already have this feature enabled are:

   - ovirt-engine
   - vdsm
   - vdsm-jsonrpc-java
   - ovirt-engine-dashboard

Adding new project is a single line of code in the project YAML file and
its fully described on the blog post [2], so feel free to add your project
as well.

So let the builds roll...

Happy Xmas!

You can try using the new 'experimental' repos which gives you verified

Hi Rene,

Adding the oVirt infra list.
It might be useful to use it to manage the jenkins slaves that are running
on oVirt right now.
Not sure if we are guest agent installed on them right now, but this can
come in handy since we use puppet
to maintain oVirt infra.

Re: [ovirt-users] oVirt 4.0 wishlist: oVirt Self Hosted Engine Setup

2015-11-29 Thread Eyal Edri
Hi Giuseppe!

I saw you mentioned you have sysadmin knowledge and some python too, would
you be interested in helping with devops tasks for the oVirt infra team [1]
?
The infra team is in charge of maintaining the entire devops infrastructure
with jenkins as the 'ci' server in the middle.
You can also checkout the monthly emails in the devops section. [2]

In addition, you can contribute python code to a recent independent project
which came out of oVirt called 'lago',
you can read about it here [4].

Let know if this is something you might be interested in, you can check
some of the tasks we're doing in [3].

 Hi,
This is a summary of the 85 response we got to the last month poll. Thanks
 everyone who answered!

Which distribution are you using for running ovirt-engine?
 Fedora 20 8 9%
 CentOS 6 52 61%
 CentOS 7 22 26%
 Other 3 4%

Which distribution are you using for your nodes?
 Fedora 20 6 7%
 CentOS 6 40 47%
 CentOS 7 31 36%
 oVirt Node6 7%
 Other 2 2%

In Other: RHEL 6.6, 7.0, 7.1 and a mixed environment of CentOS 6 and 7.

 Do you use Hosted Engine?
 Yes 42 49%
 No42 49%

Would you like to share more info on your datacenter, vms,...? Tell us about
 it

oVirt is so AWESOME! I luv it.

We currently run engine on CentOS 6 as CentOS 7 was not yet supported. We
plan on migrating it to a CentOS 7 machine.
Our nodes are currently CentOS 6 but are planning to migrate to CentOS 7.
(For the nodes a checkbox for each distribution would be better than the
radiobutton, as you can have multiple clusters with different
 distributions).

I'd like to use EL7 platform in the future, but I'm uncertain how to best
upgrade everything with a minimal downtime.
 we currently run ovirt-engine 3.3.3
we will stick with EL platform and not switch to fedora based, because
 we need the improved stability.
we also do not upgrade to dot zero releases as these introduced
some breakage in the past (regressions).
I hope this gets better with future releases.
 Keep up the good work!

1x engine (planning on changing to hosted)
 5x vms - 2x DNS/DHCP/Management, 1x webserver for intranet, 1x mailserver and
 1x Asterisk PBX

I think that we really need more troubleshooting tools and guides more than
anything. There are various logs, but there is no reason why we
shouldn't be publishing some of this information to the engine UI and even
 automating certain self-healing.
The absolute most important feature in my mind is getting the ability to auto
start (restart) VMs after certain failures and attempting to unlock
disks, etc.. VMware does a tremendous amount of that in order to provide
 better HA. We need this.

 Hi!

I'd like to make a request to all the ovirt developers ad contributors
regarding the CI and infra of the project.

As you know, the environment is not as stable as it should, and at the infra
team we don't have enough manpower to maintain it by ourselves [1], so I'm
asking you for help, the main ways that you can help us is:

 * Notifying us of any unattended errors in the tests if they look infra
 related
   - You can open tickets to trac here [2]
 * Helping troubleshoot non-working jobs
 * Helping migrate jobs to yaml [3]
 * Helping migrate jobs to the new automation structure [4]

[1] Doing a rough quick ugly math, yesterday we ran 3508 builds of around 459
different jobs, on 27 slaves, and we don't have anyone 100% dedicated to it
(I'm the infra member that can spend more time there, and it's not all of
 it).

[ovirt-users] [OUTAGE] ovirt.org wiki outage report [07/12/14]

2014-12-07 Thread Eyal Edri
fyi,

ovirt.org wiki page was down today from 01:33:07 IST till 10:22 IST.

REASON:
===
after logging into the openshift gear, seems like there was 99.9% space taken.

RESOLUTION:
===
deleted some logs from $OPENSHIFT_MYSQL_DB_LOG_DIR, and restarted mysql using
'ctl_app restart'.
space is still not great - at 84%, so we'll need to think soon how to resolve
this.

wiki is up now and seems to working well.
infra - we should look into migrating to a new gear maybe? or extend again the
existing one.

[ovirt-users] oVirt 3.5.0 Beta is now available for testing

2014-06-30 Thread Eyal Edri
The oVirt team is pleased to announce that the 3.5.0 Beta is now
available for testing.

Feel free to join us testing it!

You'll find all needed info for installing it on the release notes page,
already available on the wiki [1].

A new oVirt Live iso is already available for testing[2] including all
available updates from CentOS.
An oVirt Guest Tools iso is now available too[3].

A new oVirt Node build will be available soon as well.

Please note that mirrors will need a couple of days before being synchronized.
If you want to be sure to use latest rpms and don't want to wait for the
mirrors,
you can edit /etc/yum.repos.d/ovirt-3.5.repo commenting the mirror line and
removing the comment on baseurl line.

Known Issues
* if you're using f19 host, you'll need libvirt = 1.0.1 to use cluster level
3.5
(pkg will be provided from ovirt repo, but if it not there, you can update
from f20 repo: : yum update --releasever=20 libvirt\* )
* You can't refresh iso file list after adding a host, see
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1114499 for a workarond.

 Hi everyone!

From now on we want and to be able to give the best response possible to any
issue, we want to start using trac to manage any request we get, so from now
 on,
please open a ticket in the trac [1] whenever you need something to get done,
 of
course, if you ping us on irc we will still respond and if it's a critical
 issue
or a very trivial one we might solve it on the fly, but for any normal infra
issue please open a trac ticket.

The wiki page has been updated with that information too (thanks eyal) [2]

np, +1 for the initiative, i think infra team can provide much better support,
if all issues will be reported via the trac.

thanks,

Eyal.

Would it be an idea to keep a mirrorlist file? AFAIK it's as simple as
dropping a static file at a well known place with one URL per line. Yum
can do the heavy lifting of determining the fastest mirror.

Additionally I'd really like some clear instructions of how to set up a
mirror and get it published as public mirror.

We should ensure we have GPG-signed packages though. IIRC someone was

yes. afaik ovirt 3.4.1 was already released with signed pkg.

Subject: [Users] [GSOC][Gerrit] add potential reviewers - questions

 Hi

I'd like to contribute (within GSOC) in idea: Gerrit add potential reviewers.

Maybe at first I’ll introduce myself.
I'm Tomek, student from Poland. I study Computer Science at University of
Wroclaw. The next year will be last year of my first degree study, I hope.
As a python programmer I'm working since one year at Nokia Solutions and
Networks (don't worry I intend to change my job to another or to
participation at GSOC). Every day at work and school I'm using version
control system (Git and SVN). At work we were using to Gerrit as a review
system but currently we're using JIRA to report review statuses.
I love spend my free time in mountains (mainly polish - Tatras mountains).
 That's all about me.

I've got a few questions about project description.
Please tell me if my problem's understanding is good or not.
We need to add a few flags/methods to git review module. This flags should
allow to add potential reviewers in gerrit.
 So:
Let's assume that we've got special flags for this operations. What's next?
 1. In gerrit system we need to add special place for potential reviewers?
 2. Potential reviewers should agree that they want to review?
 3. We can have more than one accepted reviewer?

Hi Tomasz,
I'm not sure i understood exactly what you mean by 'potential reviewers'.
do want gerrit (hook?) to automatically add reviewers to a patch according to
the code sent?
so in fact you'll have a place somewhere for mapping code specific developers?

cause if you mean by adding reviewers to a patch, that's easily done by just
clicking the '+' sign on each patch.
those reviewers should have logged in at least once to gerrit.ovirt.org in
order to be in the list of potential viewers,
and they don't require any special permissions to review with +1/-1 any patch
sent.
you can add as many reviewers as you want to a patch.

does that answer your question?

Eyal.

I know above questions might seem chaotic but I think answers allow me to
 better understanding Yours needments

 Best regards
 Tomasz Kolek

I really like this idea. Gerrit currently requires new users to know who
to add as reviewers, IMHO impeding new contributors.

One relative simple solution would be to look at who recently touched
the files that are being modified and add them as reviewers. This can be
done by looking at the git log for a file. Some pseudo python code
  solution:

  reviewers = set()

  for modified_file in commit.files:
   reviewers += set(commit.author for commit in git.log(modified_file))

  return reviewers

This gives a system that those who touche a file, become the maintainer
for that file. A more complex solution could improve on that and limit
the reviewers added per patch. One can think of limiting to only
contributions in the last X months, weigh contributions so common
committers are prefered. It could also combine several methods.

For example to limit to the 5 authors who touched the most files:

  reviewers = collections.Counter()  # New in python 2.7

  for modified_file in commit.files:
reviewers += collections.Counter(commit.author for commit in
   git.log(modified_file))

return [author for author, count in reviewers.most_common(5)]

Since Counter also accepts a dictionary, one could also weigh the
touched lines per file. Downside there is big whitespace/formatting
patches can skew the line count.

In short, I think an entire thesis could be written on the optimal way
to determine reviewers but a simple algorithm could do to show the
  method works.

  Does this help?

I think if we do this, we want to make sure we cover per file who is

won't it require maintaining static lists of people per file/path/project?

I think there has been an initial work on this done by lukas [1] and by lazlo

And there was also initiative by myself to start a jenkins plugin for foreman

so you can create any type of cloud from foreman itself and get much more

unfortunately i don't think any of these project is still under active

But it might be worth to join effort and kickstart these again..

I believe that ovirt-3.4 must support it, and that ovirt-3.3.2 would

Toni has fixed two issues regarding Vdsm-networking, and they are going
into ovirt-3.3.2 beta. However, we must perform much more comprehensive

We'd need to have f20 Jenkins slave(s), and someone in each team

[Users] [ANN] new fedora20 nightlies rpms for oVirt are available for download

2013-11-30 Thread Eyal Edri
fyi,

oVirt infra has added support for nighlies rpms for various oVirt projects for
fedora 20.
the following has be done:

- All ovirt projects were added f20 nightlies on jenkins.ovirt.org. (replaced
f18, which is NOT built nightly anymore).
- One jenkins f19 slave (vm02) was upgraded to f20, and we also have a bare
metal host running f20 as well.
- Nightlies rpms can be downloaded on the repos [1]
- Nightlies publish cleanup scripts were updated on the resources.ovirt.org
to support f20.

I didn't update any ovirt-node* job, since i'm not familiar with them.
if you would like to build f20 builds, just add the 'fedora20' label to the
relevant jobs.

Thanks for ranting. Community testing and ranting are to be cherished.
We must improve in the points you have raised.

I now tried several times to test the beta 3.3.1 rpms, but they can't
even be installed in the most times.

I'm glad to read you're testing 3.3.1. May I ask you to add yourself to
  http://www.ovirt.org/Testing/Ovirt_3.3.1_testing ?

One time it required a future
selinux-policy, although the needed selinux fix was delivered in a much
lower version. Now the rpms have broken requirements. It requires
hostname instead of /bin/hostname. This broken requirement is not
included in the vdsm 3.3 branch, so I wonder where it comes from?
Anyway. So I proceeded and tried to build vdsm myself once again.
Currently the build fails with (but worked fine some days ago):

   /usr/bin/pep8 --exclude=config.py,constants.py --filename
   '*.py,*.py.in' \
 client lib/cpopen/*.py lib/vdsm/*.py lib/vdsm/*.py.in tests

   - How can the quality of the vdsm builds be increased? It is frustrating
to spend time on testing and then the hosts cannot even be installed to
   broken vdsm rpms.

I suspect you are not interested in excuses for each of the failures,
let us look forwards. My conclusions are:
 - Do not require non-yet-existing rpms. If we require a feature that is
not yet in Fedora/Centos, we must wait. This is already in effect, see
   for example http://gerrit.ovirt.org/#/c/20248/ and
   http://gerrit.ovirt.org/19545

 - There's a Jenkins job to enforce the former requirement of spec
requirement. David, Sandro, any idea why it is not running these days?

it does run, but we can't enable it since it's still failing:
http://jenkins.ovirt.org/job/vdsm_3.3_install_rpm_sanity_gerrit/label=fedora19/282/console

once that's fixed, the job will be enabled and run per patch.

 - Keep the docs updated. Our Jenkins slaves have pep8-1.4.6, so we
   should update
   http://www.ovirt.org/Vdsm_Developers#Installing_required_packages
accordingly - and more importantly, make that version available.

Sandro, who built the python-pep8-1.4.6 that sits on the el6 Jenkins
slave? Could you make it publicly available? (I can volunteer
   http://danken.fedorapeople.org again)

i tend to agree here with patrick on using non released pep8 packages, that are
not available
via rpms, but only via python-pip.
the jenkins slaves were updated via pyhon-pip and not via yum upgrade.

   - How are the builds prepared? Is there a Jenkins job that prepares
stable rpms in addition to the nightly job? Or is this totally
   handcrafted?

no jenkins job for stable builds.
just nightly builds published from this job which build only rpms from master.

http://jenkins.ovirt.org/view/Packaging/job/vdsm_create_rpms/

   - How can it be that the rpm spec differs between the 3.3 branch and
released rpms? What is the source/branch for el6 vdsm rpms? Maybe I'm
just tracking on the wrong source tree...

Based on your reports, you are tracking the correct tree; but please
describe which differences do you see (and between what releases
 exactly).

 Regards,
 Dan.

Subject: [Users] oVirt quality team proposal

 Hi,
I would like to propose to the community to join creating a group for testing
 oVirt
releases and oVirt bug fixes. I suggest to create a ovirt-qe mailing list and
 set
that as default QE assignee for oVirt bugs.
The list may be used for coordinating testing efforts, to be notified about
 new ovirt bugs,
to plan test days, propose test cases, discussing about jenkins jobs
 implementation and so on.
Forming just a small group of people testing milestones release will also
help in having better release testing.
What do you think about this?

Thanks for the response. Is the master release accessible via a repo.?

from your question I understand that you are currently using ovirt 3.2.1
  rather
than master [to answer Itamar's question from the previous e-mail], and
  that explains
the slowness of the portals on IE8 that you are experiencing.

Please note that on oVirt master, the performance improvement patches for
  IE8 affect
only the user portal; unfortunately, the admin portal still suffers from
  performance
  problems on IE8.

with regards to the master release accessibility: I am not sure if we have
  a master
release; you can build oVirt-engine directly from the code-repo by
  following the
  instructions in the following wiki-page:
  http://www.ovirt.org/Build_and_Install_Engine_RPM

@Itamar/others: do we have some kind of a nightly/weekly/occasionally
  repository of
ovirt builds/rpms? the IE8 performance patches were introduced to oVirt
  master on March 1
(almost 2 months ago), so anything rebased from ovirt master at that point
  in time or
  afterwards would be helpful.

yes, there is a nightly build (it changes every night...)
 http://www.ovirt.org/Yum_repo_file

set nightly to enabled (maybe need to disable the others).
that's for fedora - I think we have one for .el6 now with 3.2.1
 supporting it.
 eyal/moran?

for master branch yes:

current nightly builds are done for fedora 17/18:
http://resources.ovirt.org/releases/nightly/rpm/Fedora/{17|18}
and for EL6: http://resources.ovirt.org/releases/nightly/rpm/EL/6/

for 3.2.1, we don't have nightly builds, just stable release:

http://resources.ovirt.org/releases/stable/rpm/EL/6/noarch/

I've been using Fedora 18. Is usb pass-through not supported for Windows
  clients?

as Itamar mentioned below, spice-devel mailing-list members (CC'd) should
  be able to answer
  this question.

 Hello,

I'm very slowly working to make ovirt-engine running on a BSD system.
My problem is that I do it for fun and as my time resources are not
 big
I could not choose building ovirt-engine from sources as it would
 push
me to port (make packages) for all java dependencies. Yes, during
build maven cannot download Internet and build dependencies (for
 security reasons).

Would be possible to have (another) distribution archive of
ovirt-engine which would be OS/distro-independent, so I could just
extract and copy it to filesystem for local jboss? (RPM packages can
 be
extracted with 'rpm2cpio' but their owners decided to make life very
 complicated [many symlinks etc.]).

OS/distro-independent distribution archive (.zip, .tgz) would make
 life
much easiers for people wanting to have ovirt-engine running on a
non-RPM based Linux distro or on a BSD/Solaris system.

 Hi everyone,

The new oVirt website is now live!

http://www.ovirt.org

We have made some changes to the infrastructure (the website is now
running on MediaWiki: http://www.mediawiki.org on Red Hat's Platform
 as
a Service offering OpenShift: https://openshift.redhat.com) and also
 to
the look and feel. There is a new theme, designed and laid out by
Garrett Lesage, some new content to discover, and best of all, since
 the
entire website is now a wiki, it will be much easier to maintain over
 time.

We have been careful to ensure that all of the old website links
redirect to appropriate pages on the new site. If you find any dead
links, or redirects which do not make sense, please let us know! And
 as
the site has had limited exposure up to this point, we are happy to
 hear
your feedback on things you like, and things we can improve.

Thank you all for your support, assistance and understanding
 throughout
 this process!

 Dave.

   * All mails to the mailing list failed to show up on the lists,

   Cause:

This was caused by an Out of Space error on the host running

   both

Maven must be installed, otherwise builds would never work on it, but

How is maven installed on the jenkins host? Can we get it installed

Jenkins doesn't install the maven package, but uses a mvn bin under
$JENKINS_HOME/tools/$mvn_ver/bin/mvn.

I'm not sure that requiring the 'maven' rpm in the make is wise, than rather
checking if 'mvn' can be run instead,
since this a standalone pkg that can be on os even without an rpm installed.

but for now, i can make sure all jenkins slaves have the 'maven' rpm installed
