As already mentioned in the thread, perhaps Boxes can do the job, at
least on Gnome.
See

and https://www.ovirt.org/images/6/6c/Fergeau-ovirt-boxes.pdf for

yes, it is a mobile client.
There is a way to run it as a google chrome app using arc

But this way it is more interesting than useful I'd say...

need to check per storage type (which we'll do). for now, if you can

With hostusb some more host-dev virtualization could be added. Top of my

these should be covered in 3.6, though have some caveats, please try and

These things could be handled on cluster level - hypervisors need to

Also, I think its time to add official support for OpenVswitch?

I had the same goal, but for multiple independent ovirt installs. My
work-around is to deal with it outside ovirt.

- create generic nfs export for my iso mirrors
- create iso export points for each install
- add iso mount to each install
- manually (or using puppet, etc) add mirror mount on each host node
- run a script that creates a symlink in each ovirt iso mirror for all the
   isos in the mirror export
   - 3.5 handles iso images in subdirectories, but 3.4 does not [1], so the
script creates symlinks for every iso image in the top level of the iso
export for 3.4, while only needing a symlnk to the distro directory fro
 3.5.

It's a hack, but it works.

This should work without any hacks. An ISO domain can be shared between
multiple DCs or Engines.

Tal?

Robert

[1] 3.4 will descend to subdirectories to display the list of iso images
when attaching them in the UI, but the host will fail to boot because it
can't find the image unless it's at the top level.

Some "little things":

nfsv4 support (http://www.ovirt.org/Features/NFSv4)

are there specific gaps here still?

libgfapi

did not make it iirc, though some progress was made.
allon - is that opt-in, or totally not in codebase?

drbd support (http://www.ovirt.org/Features/DRBD)

Some concepts from IBM PowerHA look interesting:

I don't know if the term is correct but we'd like to be able to
group vm's together and create dependency's between them.
Something like, first start the database vm then the
authentication vm and last the webserver vm.

not in 3.6. if still relevant, please ask again in next poll.

/A linked cluster is ideal for situations where each site is
located at a different geographical location. Typically, the
sites are far enough apart so that they cannot conveniently
share a common storage area network (SAN). Each site must have

Linked clusters always use unicast to communicate between sites.
Linked clusters are a useful part of high availability disaster

We are currently developing a benchmarking system for ovirt and

people a lot of time

and so forth./

custom tests that can be run from SMIT./

/It is recommended to run the tool after you initially
configurePowerHA SystemMirrorand before you put your
cluster into a production environment; after you make cluster
configuration changes while the cluster is out of service; or at
regular intervals even though the cluster appears to be
functioning well./

this could be an external utility, rather than core to ovirt?

I've always thought it would be a good idea to have a 'storage agent' to
run on storage domains, which could perform some operations more optimally
that the current system. For example, exporting/importing domains currently
reads the whole VM image over the network, then writes it back. In my case,
my storage is all located on the smae NFS server, which could simply do an
OS copy locally, instead of reading/writing gigabytes over the network. I
don't know if other storage type could perform similar optimizations

not in 3.6. doing native storage operations is for sure a top item in

notice you can do these operations today at disk level and register the

since 3.5 you can also detach and attach storage domains across DCs/Engines

Sure you will need more components, but we don't want to
 duplicate the effort,
implementing ceph support directly in ovirt. Using
Cinder we can
 reuse the
existing ceph support, and gain also support for other
Cinder
 drivers for
 free.

On the host side, we will have of course ceph specific
support,
 so you will
be able to create ceph volumes directly, and use vdsm
api to
 start vms using
these volumes, if you want more "direct" support.

I think this is the general long term approach; integrate
 openstack components
 instead of re-implementing the wheel.

For God's sake, please, prevent "secondary" storage domains (anything
other than the master, especially iso and export) to completely block
the whole thing when being unavailable.
To many users suffered from this in the last two years I participate at
this mailing list (including me).

removing the SPM (and the concept of master domain) made a lot of
progress, but was deemed not cooked/stable enough to be merged for 3.6,
so still in progress.

MooseFS is based on FUSE drivers so it doesn't support direct_io.

My question now is - Can I disable require of direct_io in oVirt? If not
in any option, maybe by little changes in source code?
Why would I do that and why I'm not afraid about I/O performance?
Because I use MooseFS via NFS now and it works perfect, so that's why I
think that Direct I/O is not necessary!

the direct_io requirement is about robustness, not performance. it is

Hi,
Long time read-only user here :)
Unfortunately I need some info which I can't seem to find in the archives and
on Google.

In the past 5 months we’ve had two very rare occasions of power failures in my
hometown.
First one was a ms during spike or drop, just enough to cause a reboot, the
other was a 30min failure.

Problem
After the power failure my ovirt nodes boot into CentOS 6.6 and are running
fine.
In both cases my ovirt-engine-VM wouldn't start due to service Postgresql not
starting.
I tried some things before reverting back to an older DB snapshot that was on
the VM disk, but still not working.
Postgresql is not starting due to Duplicate UUID

My solution
Calm down girlfriend and don't sleep
Reinstall 1 node, create new ovirt-engine, recreate VM's and copy VM disk data
from old store to new store.
Add second node

Other solutions I can think of
1. Start cluster without reinstall ;)
2. Buy UPS (€150 one time, extra €60 yearly power usage = €450 in 5 years)

At this moment I’m 1 click away from buying the UPS, but I prefer a more
elegant solution.

After the last power failure I did NOT reinstall my second ovirt node and the
old engine is also on storage available.
Is there someone that wants some data to troubleshoot/analyse?

Or is this just one of those things? Buy the UPS and get on with your life?

Short HW overview
2x ovirt 3.5.x (i3/32GB ram,1Gb eth VM network, dual x520 NFS eth)
1x NFS (i3/4GB ram, 5TB SAS and 6TB SATA on Dell PERC,1Gb eth mgmt, dual x520
10Gb)

1Gb is used for VM networking, the 10Gb is connected via DAC cables and runs
NFS-storage.
This works great! Whole cluster runs below 120w and VM disk performance is
around 700MB/s :)
I bought all the HW with power usage in mind, PicoPSU's and 35w CPU's in all
nodes.
So adding 30w extra just for the UPS feels a bit like killing an elephant
with tissues...

kind regards
Raymond

if your DC is 3.5, you don't need to copy the vm disks, just install new
engine and import the data domain

Hello,

I've run into an odd problem with oVirt 3.5.1.

I've two sets of VMs:
A) some fairly critical VMs which need HA and have access to shared storage
B) some less important systems which can be reconstructed in the event
of a disaster

My plan was to use the slack disk on my oVirt nodes to host the 'B'
systems while still allowing the 'A' systems to run there. This seems
to not be allowed[1].

Is there a way I can utilize both the spare disk on my compute nodes and
have HA configured for some VMs with shared storage?

Currently indeed each datacenter must be configured as a shared or local
storage one, no mix for the same datacenter.

For the next release (ovirt 3.6) we are going to have oVirt and GlusterFS hyper
converged: you'll can use each host both for virtualization pourposes and for
storages ones sharing the local spare disks into a shared GlusterFS volume to
be used by oVirt hosts.
So you can also have HA capabilities and so on for the VM stored on the host
disks shared in a GlusterFS volume; at the same time you could still use you
state-of-the art SAN for critical VMs.

Here you can find some info an this architecture:
http://www.ovirt.org/images/6/6c/2015-ovirt-glusterfs-hyperconvergence.pdf

Than we are also going to have self-hosted engine over GlusterFS.

Pat

[1] http://www.ovirt.org/OVirt_Administration_Guide#Preparing_Local_Storage

also in 3.6 we are working on removing the hopefully last obstacle to
allow mixed local/shared (which will require work to allow that, post 3.6)

if this option is not exposed in ui you can use vdsm-hooks[1] to modify the

Subject: [ovirt-users] USB Modem in a VM

Hi,

Can you tell me if I can use an USB modem through one of the
hypervisor hosts to a Windows VM ?

I’d like to install a Windows Fax Server.

Thank you for your answers.

should be possible using qemu args: -usbdevice host:vendor_id:product_id

in libvirt replace @VENDOR@ and @DEVICE@ to device specific properties:

domain type='kvm'
   name.../name
   …
   devices
 …
 hostdev mode='subsystem' type='usb'
   source
 vendor id='0x@VENDOR@'/
 product id='0x@DEVICE@'/
   /source
 /hostdev
   /devices
/domain

if this option is not exposed in ui you can use vdsm-hooks[1] to modify the
libvirt configuration and inject such device.

Alon

you can set the VM to use the host cpu (it won't be migratable, but you

each VM so I can import them into a new setup individually.

different to the new qemu 2.1/seabios 1.7.5. So the OS is no longer
activated.

We already activated the VMs twice. During first install on VMware
and then afterwards after the migration to OVirt. I have no problem
to reactivate them a third time. I have more fears that I must
reactivate them with each new hypervisor generation. That can
be quite a lot of phone calls.

An interesting article from the Proxmox guys can be read here:
http://forum.proxmox.com/archive/index.php/t-19743.html
Conclusion of the discussion: After you go from qemu 1.7 to 2.1
you can force the old hardware layout using -M pc-i440fx-1.7

Looking at the qemu command line in OVirt I can see our VMs
are fired up with pc-1.0,accel=kvm,usb=off - regardless of an
old (FC20) or a new hypervisor (FC20+virt-preview). So I would
guess that everything should work without a new reactivation.

Any ideas?

Thanks Itamar.I heard the other day that NFS v4.2 is supposed to contain
server side copy, so it's possible that we might see this kind of
support in one of more storage domain available to ovirt at some stage
perhaps next year (in Fedora at least). Is this something that Gluster
will also likely provide in a subsequent release once we have proper
gfapi support?
I'd be interested to hear if others on the list are clamouring for
server side offload support in some form.

Just to note you can do this today by either:
- vdsm custom hook
- change of engine config if you know your hosts are only 7.0
- iirc, also possible by editing the specific osinfo config file to add the
flags there

Without these flags, my testing shows a completely idle 4 vcpu win slave
uses ~15% of a host core, which limits overcommit ability. With them it
goes down to 3.6% in my testing. hv_relaxed on its own shows no
   improvement over idle time.

Unfortunately there is a KVM kernel bug that leads to win hangs with
these flags, and so until RHEL gets 3.16, which looks like 7.1, only Fedora
 works:

   https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1091818

+ Ability to add local storage without putting the host in maintenance mode

This should work today. Only the wizard to 'configure local storage' requires
this at it performs create DC, create cluster, move host to new cluster, add
storage domain.
The 'move host to new cluster' requires host to be in maint. Adding another
local domain. Should not require this.

+ Some out-of-the-box option for self-hosted engine without shared storage
(e.g. gluser, ceph, drdb, application directed replication, etc)

Focus here will be gluster for 3.6

Thanks,

An official supported way to import existing raw disk images would be nice.

 please review:
 http://www.ovirt.org/Features/virt-v2v_Integration

I dont think thats what we are looking for. With this process, if I have an X size virtual disk, I have to come up with X+2X more storage to go through this silly import process. With ESXi, I just right click, add to inventory and Im off.

Right now, Im looking at moving my AIO configuration to a new host. Ill have to create the new AIO host, create a new storage domain on the old disks, create new VMs that look like the old ones, create new virtual disks, then go rummage around the storage, figure out whats what in these user unfriendly UUID names, then move the old images onto the new ones.

With ESXi, I just reinstall the hypervisor, create the new VM, then right click, add to inventory on the old disk image, and Im done.

 https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1049604

The concept of storage domains seems rather clumsy and limited to me.

If your existing raw images are from an ovirt storage domain you can keep it as is and import the entire storage domain or specific vms from it.
That's a new 3.5 feature. Mind you yii must first upgrade the storage domain to 3.5 before reinstalling

Following Maor’s suggestion I was able to add a local domain, but that required

I like the appliance solution a little better, although I think it’s best if I
were to run it under its own private KVM process unmanaged by ovirt, so that
its possible to edit and cycle the host. Unfortunately it’s still a bit
cumbersome as you need to have an engine appliance per system or shuffle around
the image with some sort of disaster recovery plan.

I also looked into using gluster or cephfs as a way to share state, but noticed
the BZs about the lack of complete atomicity leading to duplicate engines.

This is probably not the right place for dev musings, but IMO it would be great
if in a future release there could be a solution that doesn’t require shared
storage, which for smaller use-cases is often too pricey of a requirement.
Ideally, under such a “horizontal” setup, each host could govern its own
management data, and the engine could act more as an authoritative aggregator,
thereby reducing the need for ha (if it fails just reinstall a clean one and
let it reimport everything). It seems like most of the pieces are already
there, with the per host-vdsm instance already containing much of the data. I’m
guessing the missing element is having the engine support pulling that
information as opposed to just pushing it. This is sort of like a capability
that an unnamed proprietary competitor has, so it might have some sort of
appeal. Of course such setups do have limitations, like you still need shared
storage for live migrations and so on. So I certainly understand!

 the ratio
nal behind the existing design. Anyway it’s just some food for thought.

before we go so far out... gluster should work with 3 hosts, we are
working on improving the flow for this for 3.6. today it requires quite
a few manual steps to do so.

Is there any way to use local storage with self-hosted mode for VMs other
than the engine? The interface does not seem to allow it. I can hack in
local storage on vdsm, but its not discovered/used by the engine (so i
assume this is because it keeps its own metadata). I tried using a posix
domain but there seems to be an expectation that the posix domain is
accessible to all other hosts.

My use case is 2 physical servers with no shared storage options, and we
need
fast I/O since the VMs are used for CI, so local storage is the ideal
setup.

there a way to use the first engine as a master (or central) and the
second or many other ones as poller/satellite which are supposed to
deal locally with hosts?
This architecture is interesting because the workload is reparted
between several engines and once link is needed between poller and
central. More, all my vms are shown in the same ui.

Can someone give me his point of view about this?

no nesting of engines. you can manage a remote cluster from a single
engine, or deploy 2 engines.
take a look at ManageIQ for orchestrating/monitoring across multiple
engines.

This is a nice feature, but as detaching (then removing) is needed, my
question still remains.

master storage domains is a normal storage domain. it only happens to be
using its special metadata part as the master. so all storage domains
have it. if its down, engine will automatically select another one.

Itamar, and others,

Just a little word to explain that I've just finished to test the
feature you described above (automatic master storage domain switching)

This is very cool and useful.

Trying something very similar, but on a production setup, so I don't
want to mess everything : Can I put a master storage domain into
maintenance mode, when it contains some running VMs?
Is yes, what will be the effect?
Will it only transfer the master metadata parts to another storage
domain, or will it also put it into read-only mode or other actions?

Thank you.

if the running VMs are from that storage domain, it shouldn't allow you
to move it to maintenance (I hope)

[ovirt-users] Ubuntu/Debian support?

2014-11-17 Thread Itamar Heim

So, a quick non-scientific poll...

Motivation: It has been suggested that adding ubuntu or debian distro
support could broaden the reach of the oVirt community.
To date, there has been some work towards this goal, but it is not
coming to a conclusion.

Questions that comes to mind:

1) Is this still an issue?
2) Can we afford to dilute the focus we have as it is hard enough to
stabilize the currently supported distro's? is it worth the
   potential impact?
3) Would it have maintainers catering to it so it won't be left behind
   / delay development?
4) Why bother with host support, ovirt-node can be used?
5) Why bother with engine support, a virtual appliance or a docker
   image could be used?
6) if we do it, should we focus on Ubuntu or Debian distro first?
7) if we do it, should we focus on host or engine first?

Thoughts?

Thanks,

oVirt seems to want to install a very old version of qemu, version 0.12.1 in
fact. Version 2.1.2 is now available. Is there any way to make oVirt use a
newer version or use/leave what’s already installed?

Hi John,
oVirt does not choose the qemu version. It uses the one available
in centos[1] or the other relevant distro repo.
Having that said, you need to bare in mind there's a whole stack build on top
of qemu (libvirt, vdsm, etc) and jumping forward may destabilize the setup
you're using.

you should also remember while the version did not change since the last
distro rebase for .el6, it contains any feature ovirt/rhev is using via
feature backports, so while its 0.12.1, it has way more advanced
features in it.

its the other way around - the cli/shell commands are using the engine

if your solution is html/javascript based, i think using ovirt.js (which

This what I have done; remember you need to add the 3.5 repos otherwise
VDSM will be (re)installed from the latest 3.4 repos and not upgraded to
the '3.5' version. Also, this process went like a charm without any
issues (let alone loosing guest)

One question related to host reinstall vs yum update vdsm* comes into
my mind now..

On one of my all-in-one environments, which started from 3.0 days and
now is at 3.5 through progressive updates, I recently noticed some
*.rpmnew packages related to both engine and vdsm components.
I always updated the host part through yum update on this all-in-one
server.
This situation forced me to compare running .conf file vs .rpmnew ones
and to clean then the situation.

The question is: in general when you run reinstall host from engine
gui, does this process run a yum update and so you should care about
possible change in .conf files format, or does it go through
uninstall/install?

Re: [ovirt-users] Understanding Cluster / Datacenter upgrades

2014-10-30 Thread Itamar Heim

On 10/29/2014 01:00 PM, Daniel Helgenberger wrote:

Hello,

I seem to have some issues understating what and when something happens
if I change a cluster or datacenter to a higher version after upgrading
engine.
Maybe somebody could help me understand how this works in general and
when features will get enabled? If possible, pinpoint it to concrete
features added in 3.5.

My assumptions learned form experience so far, upgrading oVirt 3.4 to
3.5; please correct if wrong:
- New features are enabled if I set the cluster compat version to a
newer version after upgrade

unless the features don't need a host change, so engine may just support
them on your previous cluster level as well.

(or some even at host level upgrade)

- Prior to upgrading a datacenter all cluster need to run the higher
version (seems logical).

yes.

- This involves Engine database updates (?) and, more crucial, it will
change settings and data on the storage domains.

storage domains are only changed on DC upgrade, not cluster upgrade.

- Because of that, downgrade is not possible any more
- Also, its usually safer to keep the old cluster version while using a
newer engine version; because it is more likely to run into regressions
with an upgraded datacenter (see regression blockers for oVirt 3.5.1).

My questions so far:
- What happens if I only upgrade the cluster and *not* yet the datacenter?

you can use new features at host/cluster level (if any), but not DC
level (storage usually, sometimes network) yet.

- In case of 3.5; exactly when could I have used the new NUMA
management? I assume after upgrading the cluster?

because its unrelated to storage, so its host or cluster level.

- In case of 3.5; exactly when could I have used the new QoS settings
(like disk profiles) - here I assume after upgrading the datacenter?

I think while these are storage, they only relate to VM behavior, not
to storage domains, so cluster level sounds like the right level.

doron/allon?

If the the case of NUMA policy is not true but happens only after
upgrading the datacenter, what is the purpose of the cluster compat
version setting? I can think of making sure a certain minimum VDSM
version is running?

simply put:
host level (automatic) - engine may base some features on making sure
host has the right version

cluster level - features which require all hosts to have the new version
to simplify things (we don't want to not be able to schedule a VM using
a new feature only on some hosts, so we only allow them after cluster
level upgrade.

dc level - since storage domains (mostly), and some network definitions,
span multiple clusters, and for storage, all hosts in the DC may be
asked to perform the new storage operations, hence DC level makes sure
all hosts at DC level can do these actions.

and no, I don't have a mapping of which features require which...

non-destructively do that? Sorry, kind of a steep learing curve I've been on
for the last couple of weeks.

You should keep the users list cc'ed so everybody with the same
questions can find the answers too :)

Well I never have seen lost vms in ovirt, but if you want to move
vms between storage domains afaik the only way to currently do so
is to export a vm from a data domain to an export domain and than
import from this export domain to another data domain.

export domains are basically nfs storage systems, so you want to make
sure your firewall and selinux settings are correct.

it's also possible to detach export domains, tar them
and then untar them in another ovirt einvironment and import
this whole export domain (use the -S flag if you have sparse vms!).

this should also be possible for data domains somehow:

http://www.ovirt.org/Features/ImportStorageDomain

but I didn't try this myself yet, so I don't know if this really
works yet (new features tend to need a point release until they
are matured enough ;) )

HTH

3.5 adds ability to see VMs on the domain not in the engine and add them
(part of import domain).
not intended for lost vm's, except maybe after recovery of engine from
old backup.

or for vms injected to data store by various tools

So it would be much appreciated if this questions could get answered.

we are looking at integration in places we think they make sense and

neutron - for opening the ecosystem of SDN network solutions

I don't think currently the other services in openstack are relevant to

Hi,

I have some custom OS templates...how i can use my those OS template on my
another Ovirt Datacenter ??

I tried with export the template on another location and then try to add the
same NFS to another datacenter ...but can not add because of the data domain
already existsso i rename the nfs folder and create it and then move the
data under images from previous folder to new folderbut it didn't
workis there any way to copy or move the Templates and can use later on
the same datacenter or another datacenter ???

Thanks,
Punit

export the template to the export domain,
then move the export domain to maintenance and detach it from the current
data-center.

now attach (import existing domain) the export domain to the new data-center,
and activate (not sure if this happens automatically or not).
now you can import the template to the new data-center,
if its the same ovirt setup, i assume you will need to select the 'clone'
option and give it a new name

let me know if it helps

Looks like we have a documentation gap here.
I tried to search the oVirt site for pointing you to a section

I think that we need to finish

You'll need to install the ovirt-release35 rpm on your hosts
since the engine is not able to add the new repository (yet?
maybe an RFE on this should
be filled for easing the upgrade process of the hosts).

Re: [ovirt-users] ovirt-engine 3.5 rpm missing for el7

2014-09-29 Thread Itamar Heim

Hi,

The below response from Sandro on 12/08 in appears to answer the first
question:

Is there any roadmap for supporting ovirt-engine on centos 7 ?

It's not in 3.5 features so it will probably land in 3.6.

You can install oVirt Hosted Engine on centos 7 host and use centos
6.5 for the engine VM only.

As to the second question – the above response implies that mixing el6
engine with el7 hosts with ovirt 3.5 is ok. However just to confirm, is
anyone running this combination and if so did you experience any major
issues or missing/broken functionality?

Cheers,

Hi,

I’m testing hosted-engine v3.5.0 on el7 and it’s mostly progressing ok,
however when I go to install ovirt-engine 3.5 on the hosted engine VM
(also running el7) the rpm is missing. I’ve checked the repo locations
on resources.ovirt.org and it appears that ovirt-engine is not being
built for el7, whereas it exists for el6/f19/f20.

Are there plans to build ovirt-engine 3.5 for el7 or are there blockers
specific to that OS version? Alternatively, can I mix and el6 engine
with el7 hosts all running ovirt 3.5?

yes, an .el6 engine can manage .el7 hosts with 3.5

Re: [ovirt-users] [ovirt-devel] Building vdsm within Fedora

2014-09-26 Thread Itamar Heim

On 09/25/2014 04:06 PM, Dan Kenigsberg wrote:

I don't belive Vdsm is soon to be used by anything outside oVirt. But if
software purists win, oVirt would publish only tarballs.
Fedora/Debian/whatever would build, package, and deploy them all, and
the ovirt repo would become redundant.

I did not expect to hear much support for keeping Vdsm in Fedora. Given
what I've heard, how about taking the in-between road?

- Keep Vdsm in Fedora, abiding to Fedora rules.
- Hope that Engine and qemu-kvm-rhev join, too.

we did the work to add engine, but it was useless without its gui, and
was impossible to add gwt to fedora.
qemu-kvm-rhev is not needed in fedora as fedora has a full blown
qemu-kvm with all features enabled.

you only need qemu-kvm-rhev on .el6 hosts.

- Until they do, build vdsm.rpm with non-Fedora quirks (such as the
   qemu-kvm-rhev requirement)
