[ovirt-users] Re: Unable to migrate Engine to another HE Host

2021-05-05 Thread Strahil Nikolov via Users
In my opinion,
reinstalling the engine will never give an insight how the situation went so
bad.
Currently, at least the HE can live migrate between host1 & host3 and most
probably will power up properly in case of serious problems.
Yet, it's quite strange why the setup of host2 failsand on top of that the
symbolic links to the relevant storage are missing.
Marco,
let's have a separate thread for the host2 issue.

You can create the link if needed, but it won't solve the problem.

2021-05-01 Thread Strahil Nikolov via Users
As we have tested off the list, it seems that the symbolic link in
/var/lib/vdsm that ovirt-ha-agent/broker create was missing.Yet migration
succeeds, but the donor host looses score as the vm 'died unexpectedly'.
Try to cleanup the host2's metadata and try to provision it , so you can
proceed with the fix of host1 & host3.

I have no clue if engine-cleanup will affect the shared syorage, but it's
possible - so use as last resort.
If you fail to add host2 , you can always reinstall it as host4 and try to add
it fresh.

[ovirt-users] Re: HCI - oVirt for CEPH

2021-04-26 Thread Strahil Nikolov via Users
Due to POSIX compliance, oVirt needs 512 byte physical sector size. If your
SSD/NVME has the new standard (4096) you will need to use VDO with
'--emulate512' flag (or whatever it was named). Yet, if you already got 512
physical sector size - you can skip VDO totally.
About the mount options of the bricks, you can use noatime & inode64
Also if you use SELINUX use the 'context=' mount option to tell the kernel
"skip looking for SELINUX Label, it's always..."
Also, consider setting the SSD I/O scheduler to none (multique should be
enabled on EL8 Hypervisors by default) which will reduce reordering of your I/O
requests and speed up on fast storage. NVMEs by default use that.

Yes.. VDO removed was/ is next test.  But your note about 512 is yes.. Are
their tuning parameters for Gluster with this?

The response was that when I select the oVirt HCI storage volumes to deploy to

running.  The IPI OCP 4.7 deployment fails.  RH closed ticket because "gluster
volume is too slow".

I then tried to create with my other 1TB SSD in each server gluster volume
without VDO and see if that worked.. but though I matched all settings /
gluster options oVirt set, IPI OCP would not show disk as deployable option.  I
then figured I would use GUI to create bricks vs ansible means (trying to be
good and stop doing direct shell but build as ansible playbooks).. but that
test is on hold because servers for next two weeks are being re-tasked for
another POC.  So I figured I would do some rethinking if oVirt HCI on RHEV 4.5
with Gluster is a rat hole that will never work.

Below is the output from fio test OCP team asked me to run to show gluster was
too slow.

Usually the hostname is defined for each peer in the /var/lib/glusterd/peers.
Can you check the contents on all nodes ?

Hi David,

let's start with the DNS.Check that both nodes resolve each other (both A/
& PTR records).
If you set entries in /etc/hosts, check them out.
Also , check the output of 'hostname -s' & 'hostname -f' on both hosts.

>running on top?
It's dead simple -> replica 3 (and arbitraded replica 3) is the safest and the
most performant volume. Dispersed volumes are like erasure coding in CEPH. You
can save space, but performance will be mediocre.
Yet, oVirt UI prevents you to create and use such volume - but it doesn't
prevent you from using such.
In both cases (replicated and dispersed volumes) you cannot expand to an
arbitrary brick count.
What you are asking is a distributed volume in gluster, but in order to be safe
you need distributed-replicated one.

Imagine that you have 1 brick and you want to add 4 more , so 5 in total. You
got 2 options:A) use distributed volume , but when a node is rebooted you loose
access to it's data -> quite not good, right
B) you use distributed-replicated (replica 3 arbiter 1) volume to spread data
among 4 nodes and the 5th is your arbiter for both subvolumes
The second option protects you against failures during reboots, yet the upgrade
path (safe one) is limited (assuming that you want only 1 brick per host, as

I do these things, so I can revert with a click or three.

And what really irritates me is that even hosts that do not contribute bricks
to a volume show up when I do a volume status.

Mostly because I've had situations where I had the typical 3 node HCI with an
additional 5 compute-only nodes and when I was updating these with some degree
of overlap (several unloaded hosts at once), all of a sudden
vmstore/data/engine would go down for lack of quorum just because
non-participating hosts were not available!!

So again, if one of the oVirt developers could shine a light into this, it

I think that this is worth a RFE where you can select if you want that node to
be a gluster peer or not.I'm not sure if oVirt installs Gluster on compute-only
node, but I believe that at least you can workaround the problem by going over
the shall and remove that node from the Gluster TSP.

understanding is that in a HCI environment, the storage nodes should be rather
static, but that the pure compute nodes, can be much more dynamic or

The 'pure compute' nodes fall into two major categories, a) those who can run
the management engine, b) those who can't.

What I don't quite understand is why both types seem to be made 'gluster
peers', when they don't contribute storage bricks: shouldn't they just be able
to mount Gluster volumes?

The reason for my concern is that I actually want to manage these computing
hosts with much more freedom. I may have them join and take on workloads, or
not and I may want to shut them down.

To my irritation I sometimes even see these 'missing' hosts being considered
for quorum decisions or being listed e.g. when I do a 'gluster volume engine
status'. I find hosts there, that definitely are not contributing bricks to
'engine' (or any other volume).

Then I'm not even sure I have consistent behavior when I remove hosts from
oVirt: I'd swear that quite a few remain as Gluster peers, even if they are
completely invisible from the oVirt GUI (while hosted-engine --vm-status will
still list them).

So what's the theory here and would it be a bug if removed hosts remain gluster
members?

2021-04-19 Thread Strahil Nikolov via Users
Nah, no irony ment.Just use RedHat's documentation for 3.5 or
https://docs.gluster.org for the version in use.

I never use oVirt UI for managing gluster and obviously I never checked oVirt's
documentation on the topic.
Adding bricks is useful when:- using very fast storage like NVMe (please use
replica 3 volumes only)- Adding more servers with their own storage.
It's far simpler to create a volume of 3 new systems and add them to the oVirt
cluster. Shrinking will be far easier and the old nodes can still access the
new volume. Drawback of creating separate volumes is that VMs' disks cannot go
over the volume size.

when you said "The Gluster documentation on the topic is quite extensive", I
wasn't quite sure, if that was mean to be ironic: you typically are not.

At the moment the only documentation I can see navigating from the
documentation menu on ovirt.org is this:

11.6. Preparing and Adding Gluster Storage
11.6.1. Preparing Gluster Storage

For information on setting up and configuring Gluster Storage, see the Gluster
Storage Installation Guide.
11.6.2. Adding Gluster Storage

To use Gluster Storage with oVirt, see Configuring oVirt with Gluster Storage.

For the Gluster Storage versions that are supported with oVirt, see
https://access.redhat.com/articles/2356261.

11.6.1 has a dead link
11.6.2 points to a Redhat document describing Gluster 3.4

That document does nothing to describe the interplay between oVirt and Gluster
or the concepts involved.

In this case I wonder if there is any need or benefit in adding bricks, when
the underlying logical volumes and the file system on top can just be expanded,
typically even on-the-fly.

I have experimented a bit using three sets of 2+1 bricks in a rotating fashion
to get the maximum benefit from HCI nodes that have identical storage, and
while it seems to work, the increase in fragility (and recovery time) as you
reboot nodes on updates etc. is noticeable. I am pretty sure it's not party of
any automated testing.

We don't have any storage code supporting this device. If you can create
a file system and mount it, oVirt can use it as local storage.

If someone can provide a device for testing, or provide access to a system
with this device we can test this.

First of all you are not supposed to use distributed volumes for VM storage or
you will get into nasty situations during maintenance.
Most devs would say that it's fully unsupported , but oVirt is providing only
community support ...

Don't mix bricks with volumes.
Volumes consist of bricks (which is actually server:/directory) tht are
aggregated based on the volume type. In replica volumes , the smallest brick
defines the volume size.

Also, if someone has put a quota on that gluster volume -> you will see only
the quota size and not the whole volume size.

Can you pgovide the output of gluster volume info and gluster volume status ?

Gluster in the VMs... I was thinking to propose it, but I wasn't sure what kind
of workload you got.

I think that with Redis and Gluster on VM - you will be quite fine.
For the Galera - it doesn't need shared storage at all, so you will be quite
fine.

Don't forget that lattency kills gluster, so keep it as tight as possible , but
in the same time keep them on separate hosts.

This is for a customer who wants as much high availability as possible for
their website, which relies on a basic LAMP or LNMP stack.

The plan is to create a MariaDB Galera cluster.

Each of the 3 VMs will run MariaDB, as well as Apache or Nginx (I haven't
decided which, yet), and will be able to accept web traffic.

So the website files will need to be the same across all 3 virtual servers.

My original intent was to setup a mount point on all 3 virtual servers that
mapped back to the same shared disk.

Strahil, 1 idea I had, which I don't think would be ideal at all, was to setup
a separate, new, gluster configuration on each of the 3 VMs. Gluster
virtualized on top of gluster! If that doesn't make your head spin, what will?
But I'm not seriously thinking about that. :)

It did occur to me that I could setup a 4th VM to host the NFS share.

But I'm trying to stay away from as many single points of failures as possible.

I know that clusterizing applications (for example corosync/pacemaker
Active-Passive or even GFS2) require simultaneous access to the data.

In your case you can create:
- 2 separate VMs replicating over DRBD and sharing the storage over NFS/iSCSI
- Using NFS Ganesha (this is just a theory but should work) to export your
Gluster volumes in a redundant and highly available way

[ovirt-users] Re: Expand gluster volumes

2021-04-15 Thread Strahil Nikolov via Users
Gluster allows converting from replicted to distributed-replicated (so called
expansion) of the volume.
Of course you need to add the same amount of bricks as the replica count (which
should be either 'replica 3' or 'replica 3 arbiter 1').

The Gluster documentation on the topic is quite extensive , but it's worth
mentioning that you need to 'rebalance' your cluster after the expansion or you
risk filling the old bricks - while having free space on the new bricks.

That is expected ,as each file/dir's name is hashed and each subvolume (new vs
old bricks) will have it's own range of hashes. When you expand the volume,
some of the files/dirs on the old bricks have hashes that match to the new
"triplet".
Also , if you do not rebalance - that will have some performance impact as
gluster will search the new bricks (for the files' whose hash matches the new
subvolume) before searching the old bricks.

P.S: I think that the Engine's web interface fully supports that operation,
although I'm used to the cli.

Is it possible to expand an existing gluster volume?

I have a hyperconverged environment, and have enough space right now, but I'm
going to have to significantly over-provision my environment. The vast majority
of our customers are using a small fraction of the amount of space that they
are technically allocated, but we still need to make that space available to
them.

As a result, I'd like to plan ahead, and go ahead and have a plan to add
storage later down the road.

I'd like to plan to shut down each server in the cluster (individually, not at
once), add storage, and then bring them back online. Once all 3 are back online
with the additional storage, I'd like to expand the gluster volume to use the
additional space. Is that possible? How?

Hi Thomas,
the difference between paid solutions and oVirt is that the latter is free and
"supported" by volunteers and people that believe in open source.
If you need documentation that is missing , you are always welcome to write it
and share it with the rest of us.
Of course , both Red Hat and Oracle provide a paid , subscription-based
solution that might suit your needs better.

IMHO that means the 3-node hyperconverged default oVirt setup (2 replicas and 1
arbiter) deserves special love in terms of documenting failure scenarios.

3-node HCI is supposed to defend you against long-term effects of any single
point of failure. There is no protection against the loss of dynamic
state/session data, but state-free services should recover or resume: that's
what it's all about.

Sadly, what I find missing in the oVirt and Gluster documentation is an SOP
(standard operating procedure) that one should follow in case of a
late-night/early-morning on-call wakeup when one of those three HCI nodes
should have failed... dramatically or via a 'brown out' e.g. where only the
storage part was actually lost.

My impression is that the oVirt and Gluster teams are barely talking, but in
HCI that's fatal.

And I sure can't find those recovery procedures, not even in the commercial RH
documents.

So please, either add them or show me where I missed them.

[ovirt-users] Re: Is it possible to upgrade 3 node HCI from 4.3 to 4.4?

2021-03-25 Thread Strahil Nikolov via Users
Yes you can upgrade without a 4th host.
Actually, first update to latest 4.3.10 or your backup won't be valid for
update to 4.4
You will need to set one of the hosts into maintenance and then reinstall that
host with EL8 (CentOS or another).Once you install that node, you need to readd
it to the Gluster Cluster and then deploy from backup the new engine (use new
gluster volume) using that EL8 host.
Once it's successful, the rest of the hosts should be available and you will be
able to remove one of the other nodes, reduce gluster, reinstall , get gluster
running and add the host again in oVirt.

Is it possible for me to upgrade this environment to 4.4 while keeping some of

very clear to me how the engine is reinstalled on CentOS8. Do you need a 4th

ovirt node 4.4?

Would it be easier for me to just move all VMs to my NFS storage domain, wipe
all hosts and deploy a brand new 4.4 HCI cluster then import the NFS storage
domain? Will the 4.3 VMs on the NFS storage domain import/run properly into the
new 4.4 deployment or are there any other considerations?

[ovirt-users] Re: What do some of the terms mean in the documentation?

2021-03-23 Thread Strahil Nikolov via Users
Hi,

ovirt has 2 types of systems:- Hypervisor- Engine

The ovirt Node is a kind of appliance that works as a Hypervisor. You can also
use Linux host with the necessary repos and software.
The engine is a physical/virtual system that can contain the engine , which is
the brain of the solution, and several databases (which can be moved away).
The most used case is a Hyperconverged setup (hosts should be multiple by 3)
where :- Gluster (a network distributed ) is running locally and provides
shared storage- oVirt vdsm (host software receiving commands from the engine)
is taking care for engine- Hosted Engine - a VM that is running on one of the
hosts and will serve as an Engine

[ovirt-users] Re: Quick Question: Degraded Gluster

2021-03-18 Thread Strahil Nikolov via Users
Hi Christian,

yes you can online and use the 3rd host as long as you don't use
"cluster.choose-local on" as the local data is not ready yet and the FUSE
client will first query the local brick and later query another one (extra
lattency - less performance).
By default ovirt is disabling the choose-local, so you should be OK.

Actually, even if the gluster brick died on that host (for example the RAID is
broken), the ovirt node can still use other Gluster bricks - just like oVirt
compute-only nodes.

Hey folks,

quick question: I have a 3 node cluster (HC) in a production
environment. I recently swapped all the storage SSDs with bigger
enterprise grades SSDs. So I took a host down (migrating all VMs away,
maintenance, shutdown, fix raid, gluster repair, back online).

This worked well and all three nodes are now hardware-wise replaced. The
last one is still gluster-healing (roughly 20% done).  The other two
nodes are happily serving the vms while the third one is still in
maintenance.

my question is: Can I online the maintenance node while gluster is still
healing? Or will will open up a can of worms I would not like? It would
be cool having all three nodes back online soon while the gluster is
still repairing.

We have no urge tho. If there is a risk I would wait. If this is
somewhat risk-free and do-able why not :)

Hi Miguel,
are you also using Gluster ?
If yes, it makes the things more complicated. If you use iSCSI, NFS or SAN you
will be able to remove the host from engine  and then you can swap the OS
disks, reinstall and add it backBest Regards,Strahil Nikolov

2021-03-15 Thread Strahil Nikolov via Users
You have to verify the NFS share's ownership (user +group) and
permissions.Usually, alot of users set 'anonuid' & 'anongid' to 36 and then use
allsquash (check the man for exact spelling) to force all clients to be using
36:36 .

You need to share more details.Have you checked 'journalctl' for any hints
?Also, check the vdsm log.
The NIC is just a NIC... could affect vdsm's network service , but nothing more.

2021-03-11 Thread Strahil Nikolov via Users
It seems that the affected file can be moved away on ov-no1.ariadne-t.local, as
the other 2 bricks "blame" the entry on ov-no1.ariadne-t.local .
After that , you will need to "gluster volume heal full" to
trigger the heal.

[ovirt-users] Re: Gluster volume engine stuck in healing with 1 unsynched entry & HostedEngine paused

2021-03-10 Thread Strahil Nikolov via Users
It seems to me that ov-no1 didn't update the file properly.
What was the output of the gluster volume heal command ?
Best Regards,Strahil Nikolov

The output of the getfattr command on the nodes was the following:

Also check the status of the file on each brick with the getfattr command ( see

provide the output.

I was always running gluster ahead of ovirt's version. Just ensure that there
are no pending heals and you always check release notes before upgrading
gluster.

I have noticed gluster is often updated to new major versions on oVirt
point release upgrades.  We have some compute+storage hosts on 4.3.6 which
can't be upgraded easily at the moment, but we are having some gluster
issues that appear to be due to bugs that I wonder if upgrading might
help.  Would an in-place upgrade of gluster be a bad idea without also
updating oVirt?

[ovirt-users] Re: Removed FC LUN causes multipath to spam syslog

2021-03-06 Thread Strahil Nikolov via Users
It would make sense if you restore your backup directly on the new LUN, as this
is usually the safest way to change storage domain for the HE.

I agree, that in VmWare you shouldn't go to cli , but you can't be sure if
there are no such warnings :D . Actually cleaning up could be done by just
setting into maintenance and detaching the storage domain and then remove the
LUN from SAN side and reboot the host ;)

This really might be the best way to go. But it's a bit counter
intuitive that you can easily add stuff and even remove it from the UI
but there is still cleaning up left. But I'm not complaining that
much. You get what you pay for. Sometimes oVirt requires a bit of
extra work and that's the bargain you make. Maybe warning somewhere
could help. And it's not like you don't have to go to CLI when working
with VMWare.

I probably have to go through this again after 4.4 upgrade as SHE is
currently on a 3PAR LUN but won't be after the upgrade.

Thanks,
Juhani

Removal of LUN is pure linux task.I would go like this:1. Set the storage
domain in maintenance2. Detach the storage domain3. I'm not sure if any LVM
tasks should be done manually or are done by the Engine4. Add the wwid into
multipath blacklist 5. Remove all paths (sdXYZ)6. Unzone the LUN

claimed success put multipathd was still checking for paths. I tried
to do 'systemctl reload multipathd' but instead did restart (too quick
fingers). Anyway it worked. There was some kind of hiccup because of
that as the engine seemed to re-activate the node. No hosts went down
so in the end it worked.

[ovirt-users] Re: snapshot solution: Existing snapshots that were taken after this one will be erased.

2021-03-05 Thread Strahil Nikolov via Users
Commiting a snapshot means that you want to revert to that state, which means
that all data afterwards is lost.Even if you keep the latest snapshot, it won't
be usefull. For example you got the following:
Install -> snap1 -> some data -> snap2 -> some data -> snap3 -> some data ->
Current State
If you revert to snap2 you will have the following:Install -> snap1 -> some
data -> snap2 -> some data -> Current State
(you always have some extra data generated - for example system logs)
As you can see, you can't use snap3 as you got some data after powering up the
VM after the restore to snap2 and you will loose that.

I knew cloning and template export options are there to secure that latest
snapshot data but these are will consume additional space in storage and take
time.

[ovirt-users] Re: oVirt Node install with Foreman VG issue

2021-02-28 Thread Strahil Nikolov via Users
Most probably there is an LVM filter. As stated in the /etc/multipath.conf , use
a special file to blacklist the local disks without modifying
/etc/multipath.conf
Best Regards,Strahil Nikolov

Hi All,

I have a server with a RAID1 disk for sda and RAID 5 disk for sdb.

Following default install, prior to Cockpit Gluster and Engine wizards there is
only a single Volume Group which doesn’t allow me to continue.

If I manually configure the install and deselect sdb it gives other issues with
multipath but at least I can resolve those.

Is there a specific kickstart confuguration that should be used?

Kind Regards

Shimme

[ovirt-users] Re: Add single node to running gluster cluster

2021-02-28 Thread Strahil Nikolov via Users
Gluster doesn't work with servers but bricks.
Brick is a term for a server + mountpoint combination.
If you wish to expand your gluster volume -> you have to do it via replica
sets.replica 3 volume -> 3 bricks
So, yes you can have 4 servers and all be part of gluster, but you need extra
bricks.
Best Regards,Strahil Nikolov

Thanks for this information. I guess I follow the same way of the first
three nodes to add the next three one.

But, sorry if I say something stupid, but why 3 by 3 ?
My replication (default btw) is to keep 3 copies. If I add a node, he can keep
3 copies over 4 nodes no ? And same when there are 5 and more nodes.

I don't understand this point, if you have a explanation or a documentation
about it, I'm more than interrested

Thanks

So, now I have the urgency to do the following activities:

1) Migrate the hosted engine storage from nfs to fc (I have now an fc storage
on this host).

2) Upgrade the ovirt to 4.3 release.

So, I would like to have your help to understand how to implement the above two
steps in this particular case ( one host and the self-hosted engine ).

Hi

I have problems after upgrading my 2-node cluster from 4.4.3 to 4.4.4.

Initially, I performed the upgrade of the oVirt hosts using the oVirt GUI (I
wasn't planning any changes).

It appears that the upgrade broke the system.

On host1, the ovirt-engine was configured to run on the oVirt host itself (not
self-hosted engine).

After the upgrade, the oVirt GUI didn't load in the Browser anymore.

I tried to fix the issue by migrating to self-hosted engine, which did not
work, so I ran engine restore and engine-setup in order to get back to the
initial state.

I am now able to login to the oVirt GUI again, but I am having the following
problems:

   - host1 is in status "Unassigned", and it has the SPM role. It cannot be set
to maintenance mode, nor re-installed from GUI, but I am able to reboot the
host from oVirt.
   - All Storage Domains are inactive. (all NFS)
   - In the /var/log/messages log, I can see the following message appearing
frequently: "vdsm[5935]: ERROR ssl handshake: socket error, address:
:::192.168.100.61"

The cluster is down and no VM's can be run. I don't know how to fix either of
the issues.

Does anyone have an idea?

I am appending a tar file containing log files to this email.

To make it a bit more curious - this is a bare-metal system

multiple ifaces as oppose to single iface in KVM.

For any thoughts you care to share I'll be grateful.

What is the output of 'gluster volume info ' ?
Also, keep in mind that if you didn't use Cockpit to deploy the gluster, you
will need to apply the 'virt' group of options on that volume.
P.S.:  I hope you know that the engine volume should host only the HostedEngine
VM.

Also check the status of the following services:- sanlock- vdsmd- supervdsm

What is the output of 'lsblk -t' ?
Best Regards,Strahil Nikolov

Ovirt newbie here - using v 4.4.4

Have been trying for days to get this installed on my HP DL380p G6. I have 2
disk 170GB Raid 0 for OS and 6 x 330GB disk Raid 5 for Gluster. DNS all set up
(that took some working out), but I just can't fathom out whats (not) happening
here. Block size is returned as 512.

I've had some help on Reddit where I've been told that Ovirt is seeing my
single local disk ass an multipath device, which it is not/??!  I think I
removed the flag, but it still fails here.

So, Gluster install fails quite early through, though it carries on creating
all the volumes (with default settings) but then gives me the 'Deployment
Failed' message :( Here is where it fails

Any help gratefully received!

My guess: if this happens then probably because OVirt/RHEV wasn't
successful enough in attracting paying customers. From time to time I
tried to find reference customers but I never found a real success
story. At least here in Western Europe I've never heard of a company
that uses OVirt instead of vSphere/Hyper-V/whatever with the exception
of a rumor about a British airline.

And now with IBM as new owner, commercial success might even become more
important.

just my 2 cents.

Uwe

With the release of RHV 4.4 Red Hat continues to invest in and support
customers with a production-ready virtualization portfolio. The latest addition
to this portfolio is OpenShift with OpenShift Virtualization, which provides
continuity and roadmap delivery for the KVM-based virtualization stack

converged with OpenShift and OpenShift Virtualization providing customers with
requirements for containers and VMs a migration path and a common platform for

Help, banging my head against a wall.
Ovirt Engine Software Version:4.4.4.7-1.el8
RHEL 8.3

I have set up my cluster going to a TrueNAS storage. Everything is going great
and works well from Admin or any user with SuperUser. I would like to set it up
so that students can create their own machines.
Great, plowing through the documentation it looks like after creating a user,
it works well by giving them at the Data Center object the user roles of:
PowerUserRole
VmCreator

At that level, according to my reading of the documentation, it is also
supposed to grant DiskCreator automatically.

Well, when I do that it creates the VM but the creation of the disk does not
work. Looking in the log I find:
Validation of action 'AddImageFromScratch' failed for user will@internal-authz.
Reasons:
VAR__TYPE__STORAGE__DOMAIN,NON_ADMIN_USER_NOT_AUTHORIZED_TO_PERFORM_ACTION_ON_HE

Could anyone please let me know what this is referring to? I have tried many
roll combinations, and have even made my own user roll with full privileges to
no avail. I looked for issues and the closest I could find is:
Bug 1511697 - [RFE] Unable to set permission on all but Hosted-Engine VM and
Storage Domain
Which showed as resolved in 4.3

Could someone be kind enough to maybe tell me where I am missing it? I'll be
the first to admit I can be a little slow at times.
Thanks.

I would recommend you to put your customizations at
'/etc/multipath/conf.d/.conf' (you have to create the dir),
so vdsm can keep multipath.conf up to date.
For details check the header of multipath.conf

Here is mine:
# The recommended way to add configuration for your storage is to add
a# drop-in configuration file in
"/etc/multipath/conf.d/.conf".# Settings in drop-in
configuration files override settings in this# file.
Of course you need to rebuild dracut.

I don't know about such feature, but I guess you can:- remove host from engine-
remove and install Network Manager (yum remove and then yum install)
The safest approach would be to:- remove host from engine- reinstall the system

It is highly recommended (well actually all devs will say required)
that you have a separate datastore for the HostedEngine and no VMs
should be hosted there.
That's why the cockpit deployment is creating a dedicated volume.

verify the gluster volume options (gluster volume info  ;

Ovirt can import VMs and templates from any storage it has previously
created. The only hicup is when you have your VM split between storage
domains (for example disk1 - storage1, disk2 - storage2) , but there
are workarounds for that too.
Stream is still buggy and I'm considering using RHEL 8 with the new DEV
subscription.

It should, but it it might have issues like we got with ovirt 4.4

I would rather pick RHEL 8 than Stream. It has so much troubles right
now and I doubt that it will be as stable as I wish. I just want to
update, reboot and forget about the nodes.

Most probably. But I think upgrading from RHEL 8 to CentOS Stream 8
will be easy in case something goes bad.

I think it's easier to get the Vmware's CA certificate and import it on
all hosts + engine and trust it.By default you should put it at
/etc/pki/ca-trust/source/anchors/ and then use "update-ca-trust" to
make all certs signed by the Vmware vCenter's CA trusted.
