Hi,

right click the dead host and select "confirm host has been rebooted". this
clears
stale db entries and old vms from it. Then you can put this host into
maintenance
and force delete the dc/cluster/host.

Hi,

for what it's worth, here is a matrix like comparison (you can configure
the products and should select rhev for ovirt like features):

https://www.whatmatrix.com/comparison/Virtualization

some features of xen are not available in ovirt/rhev, e.g. live
migration with local storage.

As a side note:

What kind of data center do you run, that lacks any test environment?

If you don't have a testbed, than you have far worse problems than the
number of bugfixes and things which might (not) work in a new ovirt version.

Good question!

sadly there seems to be this bug (opened in May, 2015):

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1225425

The last statement there is:

"Moving this to 4.2 as libgfapi access is not available in 4.1"

I can't find the reason though, I remember vaguely that libvirt/qemu/kvm in
EL6 was not new enough to support libgfapi, but this should have changed
at least with centos 7.2 according to:
https://libvirt.org/storage.html

The tracking bug for ovirt seems to be this:

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1022961

It looks like it needs quite some work :(

I'm afraid there is nothing builtin atm, so you must script your own stuff.

AFAIK in order to use HA, you need to have configured power management
and another host in the same cluster (new versions also work with
another DC) which acts as a power gate.

ovirt ensures your vms run "HA" by being able to fence hosts when
they misbehave.

So if you got just one host, you can't fence, and you can't set vms as "HA".

This is really interesting.

But don't you need to remove the master storage domain concept for this,
plus spm?

The RFE for this was closed as "wontfix":

Am I mixing things up?

[ovirt-users] problem setting up bonding via rest in ovirt 3.6.6.2

2016-08-09 Thread Sven Kieske
Hi,

I'd like to setup host network in the following way:

I have 4 interfaces: eth0, eno1, eno2, eno3

ovirtmgmt network resides on eth0 and is working.

Now I want to setup a bonding with the slave interfaces
eno2 and eno3 via the hosts "setupnetworks" function:

URL:

https://engine-fqdn/api/hosts/9cdcc85b-dd87-4dcf-9275-b993ee5b5e9c/nics/setupnetworks

Request:

{
"modified_bonds": {
"host_nic": [{
"name": "bond0",
"bonding": {
"options": {
"option": [{
"name": "mode",
"value": "1"
}, {
"name": "miimon",
"value": "100"
}]
},
"slaves": {
"host_nic": [{
"name": "eno2"
}, {
"name": "eno3"
}]
}
}
}]
}
}

Response from ovirt-engine:

Incomplete parameters
Action [hostNics] required for setupNetworks

When I look at the rsdl docs this seems perfectly fine.

I tried google with this error condition but it didn't return anything
useful unfortunately.

Your help would be greatly appreciated.

The official RH docs also do not mention anything else:

https://access.redhat.com/documentation/en-US/Red_Hat_Enterprise_Virtualization/3.6/html-single/REST_API_Guide/index.html#Multiple_Network_Setup_Action

https://access.redhat.com/documentation/en-US/Red_Hat_Enterprise_Virtualization/3.6/html-single/REST_API_Guide/index.html#Bonded_Interfaces

Also this tool doesn't seem to mention anything else:

Hi,

I remember filing a BZ about this topic some years ago.

I will mail it tomorrow to this thread as I had this exact issue, as a
user of the rest api (without any persistent authentication).

the answer, as I recall (I haven't access to this BZ atm), was to simply
truncate the event log, which is far from a "solution" at all.

Hi,

this seems a little surprising.

At least RHEV states in the documentation you support up to 200 hosts
per cluster alone.

There are no documented maxima for clusters or datacenters though.

@awels: to add another layer of indirection via a dedicated
hosted-engine per outlet seems a little much. we are talking about 500 *
4GB RAM at least in this example, so 2 TB RAM just for management
purposes, if you follow engine hardware recommendations?

But I agree, ovirt does not handle unstable or remote connections that
well, so you might be better of with hundredths of remote engines, but
it seems to be a nightmare to manage, even if you automate everything.

My personal experience is, that ovirt does scale at least until about
30-50 DCs managed by a single engine, but that setup was also on a LAN
(but I would say it could scale well beyond these numbers, at least on a
LAN).

See this long standing bug:

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1166657

also searching this ML for "autostart" and "VM"

turns up this same discussion every few months.

sadly no dev seems to grasp the importance of this feature, so it's
always rationalsed that it's not needed or the HA feature is enough (it
isn't).

I don't know why the already implemented libvirt autostart feature
does not get simply passed through.

This feature was at least requested by 4 or 5 different people, to no avail.

you might CC yourself to the bugreport(RFE) and vote on it, maybe
this way it will get some traction.

Interesting,

I didn't know there where tweaks to the keyboard layout.

I'd suggest to ask this on the virt-sig of centOS (cc'ed).

Why is there no rbd support in el7 libvirt? I don't know, maybe the
virt repo guys from centos can rebuild it (they already do rebuild
libvirt afaik, another flag might not hurt them ).

 protection withing ovirt. Think of keeaplived vmac option, openvpn

 against spoofing attacks, you should use the hook or more powerful
 tools and in any case, you must be aware that you used this kind of
 protection. Regards,

I disagree:

This violates the secure by default design pattern.

The default should be secure, furthermore, it was so in every ovirt
release before, so it would be a sudden change.

if you need such advanced network setups in your guests you should be
able to search the documentation.

Shouldn't read access suffice for this purpose?

this should be possible with virsh -r dump for read only mode.

 If I install a guest from the CD image it all works fine and picks
 up an IP from the DHCP server. However if I switch the boot order
 to PXE first the gPXE DHCP request times out. Using tcpdump I can
 see the DHCP discovery packets get as far out as the physical trunk

 in active/passive mode? If that capability is provided, I'm sure a new demand
 will arise, asking for active/active engines, infinitely scalable, and so on.

of course you wan't active/active clusters for an enterprise product,
rather sooner than later

 The question really is, where the line is drawn. The engine downtime can be a
 few minutes, it's not that critical in setups of hundreds of hosts. oVirt's
 raison d'etre is to make VMs run, everything else is just plumbing around
 that.
I disagree:

ovirt is a provider of critical infrastructure
(vms and their management) for modern it business.

imagine a large organisation just using ovirt for their virtualization,
with lots of different departments which at will can spawn their own
vms, maybe even from different countrys with different time zones (just
like red hat ;) ).

of course, if just the engine service is down for some reason and you
can just restart it with an outage of some seconds, or maybe a minute -
fine.

but everything above a minute could become critical for large orgs
relying on the ability to spawn vms at any given time.

or imagine critical HA vms running on ovirt:
you can't migrate them, when the engine is not running.
you might not even want a downtime of a single second for them, that's
why you implemented things like live migration in the first place.

the bottom line is:
if you manage critical infrastructure, the tools to manage
this infrastructure have to be as reliable as the infrastructure itself.

That is a pretty narrow definition of HA, which is not shared by
most parts of the community (and the world), leading to much confusion
of users on this very ML.

HA in general means your service downtime gets minimized, today mostly
realized through load balancing and clustering software services.

just restarting a service (in this case ovirt-engine vm) on a different
host is not what todays user expect under the term HA imho.

in theory it should be possible as a design goal to make multiple
ovirt-engine share one remote data base (remote database support is
already there).

I think this would be a huge feature for ovirt, but also requires quite
some design and coding to be done.

thus adding the devel list.

 Discussions should be open, answering all questions and discussing any
 cross-team/community-wide issues as needed.

 Tentatively, these would be held twice a week, Tuesdays and Thursdays.
 Probably one set for an optimal West Asia/Europe time slot, and another
 more suited for North and South America. Ideally, a potential third
 meeting time would help cover East Asia and Australia.

 Thoughts on this are welcome... we would like to move forward with the
 new format in May.

I think this might actually improve the situation.

today I have the impression there are many times questions asked
via IRC when no one is really online and no one can answer them, but
even if you say: post this to the ML or to BZ, those questions/bugs to
tend to not show there up.

I just fear that half an hour might be a really short time if you have
a hard problem, but otoh you at least get the initial discussion kicked
of and can follow up on that via mail or bugzilla or further irc sessions.

I guess you are running into the ipxe boot loop problem:

this still seems to be a foreman problem to me, because it's the
dhcp/pxe server who handles what gets booted.

I know for sure cobbler can handle this, maybe it's a bug in
how foreman dhcp/pxe selects the local boot device in ovirt vms?

Please keep the topic on the list, so the whole community can benefit.
Well this could have been caused by multiple things:

First: I assume you also do the libvirt install via foreman.
if this is the case we have 2 possibilities here:
1. foreman does a different pxe boot for plain libvirt
than for ovirt.
2. the generated libvirt xml differs between ovirt
and plain libvirt.

You could try to check number 2. by doing:
virsh -r dumpxml $YOURVMNAME

and compare that

 Is it an expected behaviour?

Yes, because vdsm/libvirt can't detect that the vm rebootet
and the vm starts with the old xml file.

I filed an RFE for this ages ago, let me look..here:

But it might not match 100% your use case, so maybe
another RFE will push this further?

 I found the issue, all my el7 hosts were blocking in resolving ipv6
 fqdn. I deactivated ipv6 with sysctl -w net.ipv6.conf.all.disable_ipv6 =
 1 and all my troubles have gone away (sysctl -w
 net.ipv6.conf.all.disable_ipv6 = 1 in sysctl.conf for persistent effect)

 Thanks for the report!

 I have a question reslating to this : why does el7 hosts deal with ipv6
 in ovirt? otopi should deactivate it at the installation step, shouldn't it?

 Why?

 I didn't try ipv6 with ovirt but a quick search shows it seems to be at least
 partially working.

 If the above-mentioned blocking was due to default conf/setup, it's probably
 a bug.

 Is this operation supposed to be long before being able to detach the

This is however not the main difference between pools and single

pools are for mass-starting vms all dependent on the same template.
for example in a virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) this makes sense.

Well I would like to not call it ovirt-agent because there already
is the ovirt-guest_agent, so they could get confused by new users.

I really don't know if a new name is necessary at all.
What do you think are advantages?
Disadvantages are:
1. waste of time for searching a new name (already happens in this

2. breakage if you search for the old/new name : you might
end up with just half the relevant results because you used the
old/new name.

I have other vms in other virtual DCs running
fine with half this amount of ram, and more.

the vm got created via REST.

mom seems to work just fine.

any help would be appreciated.

sure:

with the vm being launched with 28 GB max ram it is:
Max free Memory for scheduling new VMs:
35617 MB

Before it was way beyond that (I can't shutdown the vm now), obviously
because of the 200% overcommitment on the cluster.

So imho it should be fine running a vm with 32768 MB RAM defined.

Thanks!

Yes, in the gui it's available via run-once

specify new ssh-keys etc.

you need cloud-init or your own wrapper

this also works via rest api or sdk.

 support for RHEL7.1 and later and built-in support for Fedora

 At http://www.ovirt.org/OVirt_3.5_Release_Notes#Live_Merge  ones
 reads:

  Live Merge If an image has one or more snapshots, oVirt 3.5's
 merge command will combine the data of one volume into another.
 Live merges can be performed with data is pulled from one snapshot
 into another snapshot. The engine can merge multiple disks at the
 same time and each merge can independently fail or succeed in each
 operation.

 I think you have to mention that it is a restricted use case for
 now... and specify that it works only for Fedora 20 and in that
 case you have to manually modify the repo definition to install the
 qemu packages from virt-preview to get the feature.

This still is not fixed!

I can already see the bugreports coming in, claiming live merge does
not work, because the release notes are very misleading!

Did nobody got the time to fix this?

this should take not that much time :)

This is a network connectivity error, or a yum problem.

Please make sure your network works (you can access the internet).
This error has nothing to do with ovirt.

Furthermore, why do you want to install vdsm inside a vm?
For most purposes it won't work anyway or you get bad performance
because nested virtualization (virtualization in virtualization)
is very slow.

It is just sufficient for demo purposes (in this case you
would want ovirt all in one installation).

I really like this terminology and think it is commonly known

Re: [ovirt-users] [QE][ACTION REQUIRED] oVirt 3.6.0 status

2014-11-26 Thread Sven Kieske
I'm not 100% sure if I understand your definitions:

On 26/11/14 10:26, Sandro Bonazzola wrote:
 The alpha phase usually ends with a feature freeze, indicating that no more
 features will be added to the software. At this time, the software is
 said to be **feature complete**.

 So if you mean alpha release requirements are:

 substantially complete and in a testable state
 enabled by default -- if so specified by the change

???

I define an alpha release as the following:
features may get added or removed during alpha cycle, of course you can
add your own policy about which features you accept.

 And for feature freeze you mean: no more changes in the feature because the
 feature is complete I agree with you, feature freeze must be after alpha.

no. feature freeze means exactly that:

no more new features are accepted, after feature freeze.
after feature freeze the accepted features stabilize in the beta phase,
you just fix bugs.

 what I was trying to describe with having feature freeze before alpha is that
 we must not have features included in the alpha release which are:
 - not substantially complete
 - not in a testable state

you should not call this feature freeze as this is not what is
commonly understood (imho) when you talk about feature freeze
(see my explanation above).

You might want to call this feature acceptance criteria or something
like that, at least it would be more clear (to me) what you mean.

 1) Is this still an issue?
Yes of course, or is it implemented yet?

 2) Can we afford to dilute the focus we have as it is hard enough to
stabilize the currently supported distro's? is it worth the
potential impact?
In general: Software which supports multiple operating systems/distros
tends to be more stable, because some bugs just get found on specific
platforms.
the general ovirt technology is available everywhere (TM): java python
 3) Would it have maintainers catering to it so it won't be left behind
/ delay development?
this is a question for de...@ovirt.org (CC'ed ;) )
 4) Why bother with host support, ovirt-node can be used?
My impression is, that most users don't use ovirt-node, because
this project has not enough dev power and lacks certain stuff
 5) Why bother with engine support, a virtual appliance or a docker
image could be used?
docker is inherently insecure (a famous red hatter said: it's like
download random code from the internet and run it as root), so docker
is no option today, imho.
 6) if we do it, should we focus on Ubuntu or Debian distro first?
well, the general rule of thumb is: if it runs on debian it runs on
ubuntu. I see way more debian than ubuntu servers, but for modern
deployments this changes. my personal opinion is, that ubuntu sucks
as a server os.
 7) if we do it, should we focus on host or engine first?
atm you are focusing host, there are some bugs open for that
and it's planned for 3.6. (that's what I read at least)

General note:

Imho ovirt would greatly benefit from more supported distros.
Not just debian and ubuntu, but you have to start somewhere.
you can attract many devs, which just don't use el/fedora.

furthermore, the basic technology runs on any linux distribution:
java and python

so these are just integration issues (path to configfiles,
different init systems, packaging not in rpm, but deb, etc.)

This is still a huge effort, but I guess canonical and various
debian developers would maybe join the effort to make ovirt
work on their platform.

 3) Is there any functionality that one would be losing out on by deploying

Can't answer the others but here is my try on number three:

You lose the functionality of customizing your node in an easy
way, in a full os install you don't need many packages as well:
minimal EL6/7 and the added ovirt stuff (vdsm/mom).
also installation is easy, setup your host the way you like
it, add ovirt repo, let engine install, finished.

I'm still observing node, but imho it's kind of it's own
distro, you have many limitations, e.g. it's designed
to be read only for most files (making it more secure)
which creates more trouble to persist changes.

I honestly don't think there is enough dev power (in terms
of manpower) for node, too. As I said, it's like a fork
of el6/fedora, but with just about 5-10 devs.

I'm running very well with el6 hosts atm, I would
discourage the use of fedora nodes as well, because
there where multiple reports of broken hosts after package
upgrades in fedora (imho that's a no brainer, as fedora
is bleeding edge and thus more breakage does occur).

This is a known gmail/ mailman (mailing list management software) issue.

google for gmail mailman dkim give you a good explanation. here's the
short version:

gmail does use/respect DKIM (anti spam technique)

mailman mangles DKIM headers (a patched version is available, but not in
EL6) and so some mails from DKIM enabled domains get mangled by mailman,
so google thinks those mails are spam, because the DKIM
header is not correct anymore.

there is no escape from this problem, except the mailinglist provider
does upgrade it's mailman version.

 3.5-rc3 now it actually seems that it is indeed a regression from 3.4
 to 3.5.
 So I propose to consider something managing this for 3.5.1 so that a user
 upgrading from 3.4.x to 3.5.1 will not get this kind of nasty problem.

this is already targeted for 3.5.1 and marked as a blocker:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1157149

But it's still not backported to 3.5 branch

 Or are you only doing backups, no restore? :-P

gladly I just had to test disaster recovery and not actually

To be honest: I never have restored ovirt-engine with running vdsm
hosts connected to it, sounds like a lot of fun, I see if I can
grab some time and try this out myself :)

By your description I guess you have nfs/iso domain on your engine host?
why don't you just seperate it, so no need for remounts
if your engine is destroyed.

 Well, at first I thought this should be done by browsing the permissions

 the events
 for example -

 YOUR_URL:/api/events

 then you will see something like -

 Vm my-vm-13 was created by a...@acme.com

imho this is not sufficient, because the events are just stored for the
last 30 days by default. If you want to collect this information for
a 31 days old vm, afaik you will get no information via this method.

Re: [ovirt-users] Issues with oVirt 3.4, centos 6.6 and Gluster

 I have found some issues while trying to install two nodes with centos
 6.6, oVirt 3.4 and cluster functionality.

 1 - If you enable the gluster service in a cluster, when you install the
 hosts, the installation fails because it tries to install the gluster
 packages from Centos repository and a dependency problem is reported.

 Workaround: Install the package yum-plugin-priorities and set priority=1
 in the /etc/yum.repos.d/ovirt-3.4-dependencies.repo, section
 glusterfs-epel.

 2 - If you reboot the host, the service glusterd doesn't start at init,
 and host becomes non operational.

 Workaround: Manually set glusterd to start at boot, using for example
 ntsysv.

Did you file bugzillas for these issues? They won't get fixed otherwise.

Well yes there is local storage in production at various sites.
For real HA you inevitable need a shared storage solution.

You could try to utilize local disks by using gluster ceph
or any other software defined storage system.

Gluster is the most integrated withing ovirt, but here are some
caveats:

It's not encouraged to run vms on the hosts which are part of the
gluster cluster (but it works, at least this is what you can read on
this very ML).

It's not supported to run hosted-engine on top of gluster, at least
not without a replica count of at least 3.
