AFAIK in order to use HA, you need to have configured power management and another host in the same cluster (new versions also work with another DC) which acts as a power gate. ovirt ensures your vms run "HA" by being able to fence hosts when they misbehave. So if you got just one host, you can't fence, and you can't set vms as "HA". HTH -- Mit freundlichen Grüßen / Regards Sven Kieske Systemadministrator Mittwald CM Service GmbH & Co. Hi, this seems a little surprising. At least RHEV states in the documentation you support up to 200 hosts per cluster alone. There are no documented maxima for clusters or datacenters though. @awels: to add another layer of indirection via a dedicated hosted-engine per outlet seems a little much. we are talking about 500 * 4GB RAM at least in this example, so 2 TB RAM just for management purposes, if you follow engine hardware recommendations? But I agree, ovirt does not handle unstable or remote connections that well, so you might be better of with hundredths of remote engines, but it seems to be a nightmare to manage, even if you automate everything. My personal experience is, that ovirt does scale at least until about 30-50 DCs managed by a single engine, but that setup was also on a LAN (but I would say it could scale well beyond these numbers, at least on a LAN). If you need to protect against spoofing attacks, you should use the hook or more powerful tools and in any case, you must be aware that you used this kind of protection. Regards, I disagree: This violates the secure by default design pattern. The default should be secure, furthermore, it was so in every ovirt release before, so it would be a sudden change. if you need such advanced network setups in your guests you should be able to search the documentation. - -- Mit freundlichen Grüßen / Regards Sven Kieske Systemadministrator Mittwald CM Service GmbH Co. Re: [ovirt-users] oVirt HA.
On 29/04/15 21:53, Dan Yasny wrote: There is always room for improvement, but think about it: ever since SolidICE, there has been a demand to minimize the amount of hardware used in a minimalistic setup, thus the hosted engine project. And now that we have it, all of a sudden, we need to provide a way to make multiple engines work in active/passive mode? If that capability is provided, I'm sure a new demand will arise, asking for active/active engines, infinitely scalable, and so on. of course you wan't active/active clusters for an enterprise product, rather sooner than later The question really is, where the line is drawn. The engine downtime can be a few minutes, it's not that critical in setups of hundreds of hosts. oVirt's raison d'etre is to make VMs run, everything else is just plumbing around that. I disagree: ovirt is a provider of critical infrastructure (vms and their management) for modern it business. imagine a large organisation just using ovirt for their virtualization, with lots of different departments which at will can spawn their own vms, maybe even from different countrys with different time zones (just like red hat ;) ). of course, if just the engine service is down for some reason and you can just restart it with an outage of some seconds, or maybe a minute - fine. but everything above a minute could become critical for large orgs relying on the ability to spawn vms at any given time. or imagine critical HA vms running on ovirt: you can't migrate them, when the engine is not running. you might not even want a downtime of a single second for them, that's why you implemented things like live migration in the first place. the bottom line is: if you manage critical infrastructure, the tools to manage this infrastructure have to be as reliable as the infrastructure itself. -- Mit freundlichen Grüßen / Regards Sven Kieske Systemadministrator Mittwald CM Service GmbH Co. That is a pretty narrow definition of HA, which is not shared by most parts of the community (and the world), leading to much confusion of users on this very ML. HA in general means your service downtime gets minimized, today mostly realized through load balancing and clustering software services. just restarting a service (in this case ovirt-engine vm) on a different host is not what todays user expect under the term HA imho. in theory it should be possible as a design goal to make multiple ovirt-engine share one remote data base (remote database support is already there). I think this would be a huge feature for ovirt, but also requires quite some design and coding to be done. thus adding the devel list. -- Mit freundlichen Grüßen / Regards Sven Kieske Systemadministrator Mittwald CM Service GmbH Co. On 29/04/15 15:49, Brian Proffitt wrote: All: There has been some discussion lately of dropping the weekly status/sync meeting on Wednesdays in favor of a less formal set of IRC office hour sessions. The current suggestion is that these office hours will be held for set half-hour periods, moderated by a rotation of community members. Discussions should be open, answering all questions and discussing any cross-team/community-wide issues as needed. Tentatively, these would be held twice a week, Tuesdays and Thursdays. Probably one set for an optimal West Asia/Europe time slot, and another more suited for North and South America. Ideally, a potential third meeting time would help cover East Asia and Australia. Thoughts on this are welcome... we would like to move forward with the new format in May. I think this might actually improve the situation. today I have the impression there are many times questions asked via IRC when no one is really online and no one can answer them, but even if you say: post this to the ML or to BZ, those questions/bugs to tend to not show there up. I just fear that half an hour might be a really short time if you have a hard problem, but otoh you at least get the initial discussion kicked of and can follow up on that via mail or bugzilla or further irc sessions. -- Mit freundlichen Grüßen / Regards Sven Kieske Systemadministrator Mittwald CM Service GmbH Co. This is however not the main difference between pools and single vms, because you can also create thin single vms without a pool. pools are for mass-starting vms all dependent on the same template. for example in a virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) this makes sense. Well I would like to not call it ovirt-agent because there already is the ovirt-guest_agent, so they could get confused by new users. I really don't know if a new name is necessary at all. What do you think are advantages? Disadvantages are: 1. waste of time for searching a new name (already happens in this discussion). 2. breakage if you search for the old/new name : you might end up with just half the relevant results because you used the old/new name. I'm not 100% sure if I understand your definitions: On 26/11/14 10:26, Sandro Bonazzola wrote: The alpha phase usually ends with a feature freeze, indicating that no more features will be added to the software. At this time, the software is said to be **feature complete**. So if you mean alpha release requirements are: substantially complete and in a testable state enabled by default -- if so specified by the change ??? I define an alpha release as the following: features may get added or removed during alpha cycle, of course you can add your own policy about which features you accept. And for feature freeze you mean: no more changes in the feature because the feature is complete I agree with you, feature freeze must be after alpha. no. feature freeze means exactly that: no more new features are accepted, after feature freeze. after feature freeze the accepted features stabilize in the beta phase, you just fix bugs. what I was trying to describe with having feature freeze before alpha is that we must not have features included in the alpha release which are: - not substantially complete - not in a testable state you should not call this feature freeze as this is not what is commonly understood (imho) when you talk about feature freeze (see my explanation above). You might want to call this feature acceptance criteria or something like that, at least it would be more clear (to me) what you mean. My impression is, that most users don't use ovirt-node, because this project has not enough dev power and lacks certain stuff 5) Why bother with engine support, a virtual appliance or a docker image could be used? docker is inherently insecure (a famous red hatter said: it's like download random code from the internet and run it as root), so docker is no option today, imho. 6) if we do it, should we focus on Ubuntu or Debian distro first? well, the general rule of thumb is: if it runs on debian it runs on ubuntu. Not just debian and ubuntu, but you have to start somewhere. you can attract many devs, which just don't use el/fedora. furthermore, the basic technology runs on any linux distribution: java and python so these are just integration issues (path to configfiles, different init systems, packaging not in rpm, but deb, etc.) This is still a huge effort, but I guess canonical and various debian developers would maybe join the effort to make ovirt work on their platform. my 2 cent -- Mit freundlichen Grüßen / Regards Sven Kieske Systemadministrator Mittwald CM Service GmbH Co. On 13/11/14 20:57, Christopher Young wrote: 3) Is there any functionality that one would be losing out on by deploying oVirt via oVirt-node vs. using full-OS installation? Which is the more recommended? Can't answer the others but here is my try on number three: You lose the functionality of customizing your node in an easy way, in a full os install you don't need many packages as well: minimal EL6/7 and the added ovirt stuff (vdsm/mom). also installation is easy, setup your host the way you like it, add ovirt repo, let engine install, finished. I'm still observing node, but imho it's kind of it's own distro, you have many limitations, e.g. it's designed to be read only for most files (making it more secure) which creates more trouble to persist changes. I honestly don't think there is enough dev power (in terms of manpower) for node, too. As I said, it's like a fork of el6/fedora, but with just about 5-10 devs. I'm running very well with el6 hosts atm, I would discourage the use of fedora nodes as well, because there where multiple reports of broken hosts after package upgrades in fedora (imho that's a no brainer, as fedora is bleeding edge and thus more breakage does occur). Gianluca This is a known gmail/ mailman (mailing list management software) issue. google for gmail mailman dkim give you a good explanation. here's the short version: gmail does use/respect DKIM (anti spam technique) mailman mangles DKIM headers (a patched version is available, but not in EL6) and so some mails from DKIM enabled domains get mangled by mailman, so google thinks those mails are spam, because the DKIM header is not correct anymore. there is no escape from this problem, except the mailinglist provider does upgrade it's mailman version. Workaround: Install the package yum-plugin-priorities and set priority=1 in the /etc/yum.repos.d/ovirt-3.4-dependencies.repo, section glusterfs-epel. 2 - If you reboot the host, the service glusterd doesn't start at init, and host becomes non operational. For real HA you inevitable need a shared storage solution. You could try to utilize local disks by using gluster ceph or any other software defined storage system. Gluster is the most integrated withing ovirt, but here are some caveats: It's not encouraged to run vms on the hosts which are part of the gluster cluster (but it works, at least this is what you can read on this very ML). It's not supported to run hosted-engine on top of gluster, at least not without a replica count of at least 3.
