[ovirt-users] change disk size using a thin provision based template

2014-05-08 Thread Tamer Lima
Hello,

I am making some tests and this time I want to reduce the disk size before
create a new vm (in the new vm window )

test:
1) click on new VM
2) select template (centos6.5 , 6GB, 500GB HD , 2 cores)
3) resource allocation : select preallocated disk
4) change disk size it is not possible !

Why I can not change disk size ?

I know it is based on template who had already defined (500GB), but this
template in fact has only 4GB of actual size in thin provisioning
allocation policy .

thanks

[ovirt-users] how to remove VM and Hosts ?

2014-05-06 Thread Tamer Lima
hello

what is the correct procedure to remove VMs and Hosts?
I know the right way is to remove VMs first then remove your Host,
but I generate 20 VMs, just for testing, and I want to remove either the
host who hosts this VMs

Environment:
3 servers:
srv-01 = engine , vdsm
srv-02 = vdsm , spm, lots of VMs
srv-03 = vdsm , lots of VMs

I removed 2 hosts of my ovirt-engine
steps:
1) select host and put on maintenance
2) stop all VMs
3) remove host

But in VM tab I can see all VMs and can not remove .

steps

1) select VM and click on remove
Are you sure you want to remove the following items?
- pvm0203-2
Remove Disk(s)

2) click ok
Operation Canceled
Error while executing action:
pvm0203-2:
Cannot remove VM. VM is attached to a VM-Pool.

What really happens here? Where is this files located to remove manually?

thanks

Re: [ovirt-users] how to remove VM and Hosts ?

2014-05-06 Thread Tamer Lima
I reinstalled the hosts

step:
1) create new host I selected srv-02
2) host created

1) create new host I selected srv-03
2) host created

and noticed two things :

1) I tried now, to remove the remaining VMs , but the error was the same :
Cannot remove VM. VM is attached to a VM-Pool.

2) I can run theses VMs . That is, I can remove the host and reinsert again
without VM problems.
2.1) And another detail: these VMs are thin/dependent.

All others VMs that I was able to remove was the type clone/independent.

What happens with this thin type provisioning?

Re: [ovirt-users] how to remove VM and Hosts ?

2014-05-06 Thread Tamer Lima
Problem solved:

The VMs are related to POOL

To remove these VMs
1) on tab POOLS : detach each VM from pool
2) remove pool (when I choose to detach all VMs from the pool this will
remove the pool itself)

When I do this , on the VM tab the icons of VMs changes from Pool Icon to
Server Icon
Then, on VM tab I select desired VM and click on remove. Now it works.

finally:

all VMs removed.
now I can remove the Hosts

Subject: [ovirt-users] does SPM can run over ovirt-engine host ?

  Hello,

  When I create virtual machine from a template (centos6.5, 2 cores, 8GB
 mem,
500GB hd) this process takes almost 2 hours. I click on New VM button
 and
just select the template and click ok.

engine.log show me high network consumption (98%) between engine-server
 host
  and SPM host.

Could you share that piece of log which indicates the 98% consumption is
 beween
the engine server to the SPM host (vs the SPM node to the storage server) ?

I tried to make my engine-server host a spm host too, but without sucess.

Does SPM can run over on the same ovirt-engine machine ?

Am I make something wrong? Or create VM from template is really slow ?

  my servers :
  srv-0202 = ovirt-engine , vdsm
  srv-0203 = spm , vdsm
  srv-0204 = vdsm
These servers are dell blades connected on a 100GB switch.

  thanks

This is what I know about SPM:
  http://www.ovirt.org/Storage_-_oVirt_workshop_November_2011

= Storage Pool Manager (SPM) A role assigned to one host in a data center
  granting it sole authority over:

  * Creation, deletion, an dmanipulation of virtula disk images,
 snapshots
  and templates
  * Templates: you can create on VM as a golden image and
 provision to
  multiple VMs (QCOW layers)
  * Allocation of storage for sparse block devices (on SAN)
  * Thin provisinoing (see below)
  * Single metadata writer:
  * SPM lease mechanism (Chockler and Malkhi 2004, Light-Weight
 Leases
  for Storage-Cnntric Coordination)
  * Storage-centric mailbox
  * This role can be migrated to any host in data center

one more information from engine.log

it is an another thing that confused me about the strange traffic during VM
creation:

the virtual machine was created using :
volumeFormat = RAW,
preallocate = Sparse.

On table 4.1 , chapter 4 of red hat enterprise , admin guide documentation
this combination has a file whose initial size is close to zero and has no
formatting (NFS format RAW and Type Sparse)

yes, I dont want to re-install ovirt

I'm not sure if allInone could be fix this problem.

allinone install vdsm on the same ovirt-engine host. Well, I already have
this : ovirt-engine, vdsm on the same host: srv-0202

My storage domains(data and iso) are hosted on srv-0202

I believe my solution is create one engine per server. Three independent
engines managing only local virtual machines.

ok, Itamar, thanks.

now I can understand how the things work.

but I have a question based on the fact that I have ovirt-engine on
version 3.4 and DC and Cluster both are configured on version 3.3 :

- This means that I have available features on version 3.4 , but these
features just will work when I update DC and Cluster to version 3.4 ?
(this is what I understand, following Dafna Ron response)

so, to really obtain the benefits of the new version (3.4) I need to run
the commands (yum update ovirt-engine-setup, engine-setup) and also
increase the version of compatibility within the datacenter, cluster and
host to the version 3.4

- and what I have if only update ovirt-engine to version 3.4 and not
update dc, cluster neither hosts.
I realized changes on ovirt web admin interface, improvements on icons and
maybe new fields.

Gianluca replied with links for specific features.
I'll reply on the general concept:
 - a host can be upgraded to a specific 3.x version. it can be in any
   3.y cluster which is = 3.x
once the host is upgraded, 3.x host-level features can be used
 - a cluster can be upgraded to 3.x once all active hosts in it are at

once the cluster is upgraded, 3.x cluster-level features can be used
 - a data cetner can be upgaeded to 3.x once all clusters in it are at
   least with 3.x
once the DC is upgraded, 3.x DC-level features can be used

i don't think we have it clearly documented per feture if it is host

[ovirt-users] off topic = newbie with bugzilla, gerrit and ovirt VDSM 4.14

Hi,

I have a problem with an automatic yum vdsm upgrade (4.13 to 4.14) on
ovirt 3.3 : Host x.x.x.x is installed with VDSM version (4.14) and cannot
join cluster Default which is compatible with VDSM versions
[4.13,4.9,4.11,4.12,4.10].

I am searching the solution and one of them (from bz Bug 1083008 ) points
to gerrit site(http://gerrit.ovirt.org/#/c/23456/)

I do not have any experience in solving bugs, neither bz, gerrit,
github
How to initialize in this world and solve the ovirt problem ?

another thing : does downgrade or remove vdms package excludes the
installed virtual machines ?

I know about ovirt 3.4 is the new release, but I want to learn how to solve
some bugs when new releases is not launched;

(off course I am afraid to upgrade to ovirt 3.4 too :) )
