Thanks, I have managed to get 2 systems to talk to each other, 1 laptop
providing the storage and one 'desktop' providing the horsepower/room,
in a HE NFS setup.
Will bring some cabling/switch and only need a (or 2) monitor with power.

See you all Saturday and maybe friday evening downtown??

All modern browsers work fine. It has todo with the fact that compiling
ovirt-engine for all browser versions is taking to much resources. It
has to do with how ovirt uses GWT if I'm correct.
Searching the mailinglist for this message + GWT will probably reveal a
message from a developer with a bit more info than I can remember.

As suggested amend your vdsm.conf to use replica 2. There should be a
vdsm.conf.rpmnew in /etc/vdsm which documents all parameters. Don't
forget that if you use replica 2 that you need to take care of
split-brain situations!

[ovirt-users] Disappearing vm.conf

2015-09-14 Thread noc
Hi All,

I'm reinstalling hosted-engine on my F22 laptop and I'm making progress.
With beta3 I couldn't get it installed, with beta5 it installed and I
could go into the webui but I had to shutdown my laptop and get some
sleep :-)
Next morning the hosted-engine didn't start. Running 'hosted-engine
--vm-status' tells me I need to deploy first. Looks like its a virgin
system. Looking at what hosted-engine does I found out that
/var/run/ovirt-hosted-engine-ha/vm.conf is missing. In another thread
its mentioned that it now lives on the storage domain but I couldn't
find it there, nothing resembles it.
Question is: how did engine get started and why is that vm.conf now missing.

Logs are available later today if needed.

If you don't use multipath then add a blacklist section to your
multipath.conf, something like this:
blacklist {
wwid *
}

Now, if you do use multipath you can whitelist the paths that you want.

Sorry, forgot to install vdsm-gluster. Starting the VM on an el6 host

OK, back to setting up a el6 host except when you generate a el7 version

 it to
  work. Systems used:
  - hosts Centos7 or Fedora20 (so upto date qemu/libvirt/oVirt(3.5))
  - glusterfs-3.6.1
  - vdsm-4.16.0-524.gitbc618a4.el7.x86_64 (snapshot master 14-nov)

Just adding the patch to vdsm-4.16.7-1.gitdb83943.el7.x86_64 doesn't

Q1: what is de exact status of libgf and oVirt.
Q2: how do I test that patch?

I experimented a little more and found that if I create a VM in oVirt on
a glusterfs storage domain and start it, it won't use libgfapi, BUT if I
use virsh on the host where the VM runs and then add a disk the libgfapi
way the VM will see the disk and can use it. So the underlying infra is
capable of using libgf but oVirt isn't using it. Thats where the patch
comes in I think but I can't get it to work.

Q: how do I test that patch

I'm able to get around gcc/patch/git etc so don't need a n00b step by
step but a little how to get started is very welcome.

Thanks in advance,

Re: [ovirt-users] API -- Do I need to use templates? Can I change network for the nic?

2014-10-03 Thread noc

I'm actually having issues across the board...maybe its because I'm
going against the design ideals but I was told that in order to use
the local storage on the box and sacrifice VM migration capabilities,
all machines had to be in their own datacenter. Pain point number one.

For reference: http://www.ovirt.org/OVirt_Administration_Guide

Second pain point is adding additional networks aside from the initial
management network doesn't seem to be very intuitive. I'm a network
 engineer for a living...and I can't figure it out.

See below
Third pain point is ovirt management UI requires a restart semi
 frequently due to crashing.

Don't know about your version and whether you have a dedicated or a
hosted-engine setup but in my case I have both types running and don't
experience any crashes, running a dedicated 3.4.3 engine(s)

I added the network under the networks tab, but I noticed it doesn't
ask any interface questions (ok, it could technically attempt arp on
all interfaces like a citrix netscaler). I notice theres no ifconfig
changes on the host. I also notice that the other interface has a
bridge named exactly as the management name in the UI; ovirtmgmt,
 which is bridged to eth0.
Sofar everything OK

OK, so I create a bridge called utility (my network name) and mapped
it to a vlan tagged interface I had setup on eth1.21. Everything looks
identical to how ovirt setup the initial network. The interface itself
works, I can see things on the network etc. Traffic passes.

Not needed. If you have created your networks then goto to the hosts
tab, select your host, select the Network Interfaces tab and hit Setup
Host Networks.
You'll get a window where you can drag and drop your defined networks to
an interface and define properties for them.

Trying to run the VM results in errors because its failing network
filters, says it doesn't exist etc. All I want to do, is create a VM
with some memory, some disk, with a nic on a network, across
individual machines. My PXE provisioning will take over from there.
Whats the best way to do this? Sorry for all the questions -- your
guys' response is great, and I really appreciate the help thus far.

I use theForeman for that and it works perfectly.

No problem with the questions, oVirt tries to solve a complex problem
and sometimes its easy to forget that one had the same problems a whole
while back :-)

something to do with the setup of the diskstore I am supposed to use for

I use a Synology (DS211j and now DS214play) at home and have my storage

I think I modified /etc/exports after creating it so that it keeps the

3) restart proxy service.
3) use config tool to configure ovirt-engine:
* ExternalSchedulerServiceURL=http://ip:18781/

The scheduler proxy listens to localhost:18781, none of ips that can be
filled here will be reached on that port.

you config ovirt engine with the ip of the proxy, or I'm missing sth.
ovirt communicates with the proxy and not the other way around.

I'm following this and found out that ovirt-scheduler-proxy only listens
on localhost so you'll need to adjust accordingly.

will see it in the main dialog as well).
6) clone/copy currernt cluster's used cluster policy (probably none - prefer it
to have no balancing modules to avoid conflicts), name it 'your_name' and
attach memory_even_distribution weight (you can leave it as the only weight
module in weight section to avoid configuring factors).
7) replace cluster's cluster policy with newly created one.

try it out and let me know how goes :-)

Ok, progress of some sort :-)

I added the weight function to the cluster and when I replace my dns
name with localhost in ExternalSchedulerServiceURL then engine.log shows
that it can contact the scheduler. I expected a rebalance but nothing
happened. Stopping and starting a VM does provoke a reaction, an error :-(

From the scheduler.log I see that engine contacts it and pushes some
information, the log also shows that some information is returned and
then there is a big error message in the log of engine.

Having installed oVirt, probably dozens of times, I have some guidelines:
- temporarily disable firewalld/iptables (if all works, enable should
still work, scripts with rules are generated and location is given)
- make selinux permissive either via setenforce 0 (until next boot) or
via /etc/selinux/config ( survives reboots), dont disable it!
- make sure fqdn work in both directions between engine and host(s)

How can I specify an appropriate configuration to get this working?
I would prefer to keep using SSL if possible.
Just guessing but I don't think that your fqdn is localhost in
your certs. Use your fqdn for the url variable.

Good thought. But now I am getting:

error: [Errno 336265225] _ssl.c:341: error:140B0009:SSL

Some searching indicates that my keys and certs need to be in pem

how to do that?

What happens if you leave out the ca_file/key_file/cert_file
variables?
I just played around with ovirt-shell and made a .ovirtshellrc
file, on the engine, and don't remember setting these and I could
login and run scripts
Can't access my test environment right now so this is also a shot
in the dark.

That's what I tried first. I get:
error: server CA certificate file must be specified for SSL secured
connection.

And if I don't specify https I get:
error: No response returned from server. If you're using HTTP protocol
against a SSL secured server, then try using HTTPS instead.

OK. Here is what I did:
On ovirt-engine: wget https://engine_fqdn/ca.crt --no-check-certificate
and used the following .ovirtshellrc

[cli]
autoconnect = True
autopage = True
[ovirt-shell]
username = admin@internal
timeout = -1
extended_prompt = False
url = https://engine_fqdn/api
insecure = False
filter = False
session_timeout = -1
ca_file = /root/ca.crt
dont_validate_cert_chain = False
key_file = None
password = **
cert_file = None

Something must be different about our setups. This is where I started.

In both cases, either insecure = True or when I specify the ca_file
only, I get:

error: [401] - Unauthorized, HTTP Status 401

The one difference is that you are using ca_file = /root/ca.crt
whereas I am using ca_file = ca.pem.

I can't seem to find any .crt files in the /etc/pki/ovirt-engine area
(or, for that matter, in the /etc/pki/vdsm area on the node).

You have missed the step where I downloaded ca.crt with wget :-)

I am trying to set up a testing network using o-virt, but the

two different production setups.

My previous experience has been with VMWare. I have always set up a
single bridged network on each host. All my hosts, VMs, and non-VM
computers were peers on the LAN. They could all talk to each other,
and things worked very well. There was a firewall/gateway that
provided access to the Internet, and hosts, VMs, and could all
communicate with the Internet as needed.

o-virt seems to be compartmentalizing things beyond all reason.
That is a way to use oVirt, but the following simple setup should work
and give you a way to check against your setup.

I have two setups, one at home and one at work. The one at home is a
setup of 2 hosts and one of those is a hacked up host/engine.
engine/host1: standard fedora19 kde install, static ip (192.168.1.11)
configured with my NAS (192.168.1.16) as dhcp/dns server and my internet
router (192.168.1.254) as gateway
Just make sure that NetworkManager is off and that your interfaces are
not NM managed, network on.
This was a allinone setup but I got a NAS with NFS so I turned my aio
setup into a engine/host system. It has problems with that but nothing
network related.

Host2: same as above but without the engine install, ip:192.168.1.22, gw
192.168.1.254 DNS:192.168.1.16.

How does it all come together?
Well in your case, and mine if I were to start over, start with a static
network which is NOT managed by NetworkManager. Use either Fedora or
Centos which ever you more comfortable with and it also depends on
whether you want to test/use all the features in oVirt. Currently, there
are a few features not available in Centos because the versions of
libvirt/kvm/qemu/gluster are too old in Centos.
Install ovirt-engine on your first 'server', probably choose NFS as your
storage domain, either on your engine server or from somewhere else on
your network. Make sure its nfs-v3 and not v4!, local default is v4!
Make sure that ip addresses on you network are resolvable, either
through /etc/hosts or through DNS! Engine-setup will complain if this
doesn't work, using localhost will not work either!
On the engine server there will be no bridge and nothing will change the
network config.

Next the first host.
Prepare the host in a similar way you did the engine server. You can
choose a minimal install of either Centos or Fedora or install a full
desktop but make sure that ips are static and NOT managed by
NetworkManager, hostname resolvable, ovirt repo available.

From the webui add your prepared host and if everything went OK you'll
see that on that host you will now have a bridge, ovirtmgmt, which acts
as the primary interface.
Create a VMs and choose ovirtmgmt as a network for its nics, can't
choose anything else. Either give the VMs a static address or use a dhcp
server but the VMs should be able to talk to each other, to the host(s),
the engine and to the internet.

Every host that you add after the first will also has its network turned
into a bridge, ovirtmgmt, and communication/migration/display/etc will
take place over this network. One caveat, storage domain mapping is from
the host to the storage, the engine, if it is NOT the NFS server,
doesn't have to have access to the storage.

If you have servers with more that 1 nic then you can create additional
networks using the webui of oVirt and assign these to clusters and to VMs.

If you need vlans to coexist with ovirtmgmt on the same physical nic, I
think that is possible but haven't tried it myself. In theory you need
to setup the network first outside of oVirt, including you vlan
structure and then install ovirt.

Some concepts:
oVirt engine: is just the manager, does 'nothing' related to running VMs
itself. You can turn it off and all hosts with their VMs will keep
running. You just can't start new ones, in short manage them.
oVirt host: is the real workhorse and is managed using oVirt-engine.
Runs VDSM which communicates with engine and starts/manages the VMs on
the host on behalf of engine.
oVirt node: is a special slimmed down Fedora distro that includes VDSM
and a small setup so that it can be used as a oVirt host

People tend to mix and match ovirt-host and ovirt-node which makes for
nice communication problems :-)

If you haven't done so, there is an irc channel, ovirt, on irc.oftc.net
with helpful people, if they are awake.

I don't quite see the point, unless you have mirrored ssd's. Data

But why use swap at all? I'm assuming you dimension a node to its

finished. I don't see much need for swap there.

Perhaps my view is different than usual, I see swap as the gravelly

just reduces the damage in case of unexpected failures. Swap isn't
something to use on a regular basis as cheep memory, as RAM is not that

I think Joop means to be able to add hosts (nodes) to a cluster by
adding their MAC address to the dhcp list for PXE boot into ovirt-node
and thus join the cluster. This would make it easy to add new physical
nodes without any spinning disks or other local storage requirements.

we started adding foreman integration in 3.3:

adding ohad and oved for their thoughts on this.

I suppose this may not be easy with complex network connections (bonds
on mgmt network, mgmt network on a tagged vlan, etc), but it should be
possible if the management network interface is plain and physical.

This isn't about provisioning with Foreman. Its about having the compute
nodes NOT having any spinning disks. So the only way to start a node is
to pxeboot it and then let it (re)connect with the engine. Then it will
be identified by engine as either a new node or a reconnecting node and
it will get its configuration from the engine. For reference: thats how
VirtualIron works. It has a managment network, just like ovirt, and on
that it runs a tftp and dhcp server. Nodes are plugged into the
managment network, without disk, and then pxe booted after which they
appear in the webui as new unconfigured nodes. You then can set various
settings and upon rebooting the nodes will recieve these settings
because it is recognised by its mac address. The advantage of this
construct is that you can place a new server into a rack, cable it,
power on and go back to you office where you'll find the new node
waiting to be configured. No messing around with CDs to install an OS,
not being in the datacenter for hours on end, just in and out.

Yes, disks are cheap but they brake down, need maintenance, means
downtime and in general more admin time then when you don't have them. (
its a shame to have a raid1 of 2 1Tb disk just to install an OS of less
then 10G)

just wondering, how do they prevent a rogue node/guest from
masquerading as such a host, getting access/secrets/VMs to be launched
on such an untrusted node (they could easily report a different mac
address if the layer 2 isn't hardened against that)?

They would need physical access to your rack which ofcourse is locked,
you would need to powerdown/up which would trigger an alert, switch port
down/up would trigger an alert, so probably you're notified that
something not quite right is happening. I haven't gone through the
source to see if there is more then just the mac address check.

other than that, yes. we actually used to have this via the
AutoApprovePatterns config option, which would have the engine approve
a pending node as it registers (I admit i don't think anyone used this
last several years, and it may be totally broken by now).

please note this doesn't solve the need for a disk, just the
auto-registration part (if it still works)
What I would like is to have the ovirt Node pxe booting and getting its
config from engine or autoregister. I know there is a script which
converts the iso into a huge pxeboot kernel but don't know how to solve
or if its solved the config part.

@karli:
If you run your cluster in Memory Optimization=None then you won't need
swap. Have been doing that for years and haven't had a single problem
attributed to that. I just would like to have the choice, pxe boot the
node and know that you don't have swap. Run with disks if you really
need overprovisioning.

I updated one of my hosts and after that that host couldn't start VMs

I'd like to see some way to ensure redundant groups of VMs are running

E.g. if I have 2 or 3 dns servers running in a VM, I'd like to have them
running on different hosts if they are available.

I'd like these VMs to repel each other w.r.t. the physical running

VM's that depend on each other over the network are running as close
together as possible... (i.e. attract each other)

[Users] Engine-config -s small problem

2013-05-17 Thread noc

Hi All,

Don't know if this is documented somewhere but I ran into an interesting
problem yesterday. First we had intermittent problems with ssh
connecting to VMs which we traced to having two oVirt installation being
active in one subnet. Found the post from January where it is explained
how engine allocates its mac address pool and how to set it with
engine-config -s MacPoolRanges. Today I remembered that I had done that
when I was about to start a VM and removed the nic from the VM and added
it back. To my surprise it got the same macaddress as it had (from the
old range). On a hunch I restarted ovirt-engine and redid the remove/add
operation and now it got a new mac address from the range specified.
Shouldn't the engine be aware that the config is changed if you use
engine-config and reload its cached values from the database?

I expected this but it seems not to be the case, bug or by design.

Now I am confused
Do you or don't you need vdsm-gluster on your system?
If the gluster checkbox is set on the cluster then you'll need the
gluster packages. If you don't use gluster but said so
(both=virt+gluster) during engine-setup then the checkbox will be
checked and you'll need the packages.
The bigger problem ofcourse is that oVirt-3.2.1 requires gluster-3.4.0

[Users] VM Export and import problem

2013-02-21 Thread noc
I have exported a couple of VMs to an export domain and did a new setup
of ovirt-engine. Importing is no problem as long as I import all
machines first and then create new VMs. If I first create a couple of
VM's and then try to import I get the error that the mac address is
already in use. No problem, but I don't see an option to change the mac
address of the to be imported machine so can't import it. Finding the
active VM with the offending mac address is possible but not really the
way to go IMHO.

Is there an other route to get those VM's imported?

Thanks,

Hello,
updated my oVirt 3.2 beta all-in-one to 3.2 final.

CC Yaniv Dary who maintains the reports

I just installed the reports parts and also have trouble getting at the
reports link using Firefox-18.02 on Windows. From the portal page I can
click on the Reports link and it will briefly show that I need to click
on 'something' and then the page refreshes back to the portal page.
Using IE9 I can goto the reports pages and paste it into FF and then
login and run reports.
Both IE and FF have problems with the layout of the site, lots of
overlapping text and icons, for example the login button is displayed
over the User ID: text, Need help is displayed over the Password:
text, after logging in more overlaps are visible.
Somehow I can't select anything from today until 2-feb. There is only
data from 1-feb going backwards ???

This is the way the monitoring works, shows two months back for the latest
aggregation date.
I will take 3 hours for the initial data to aggregate.

Ah, will recheck and see if it will show more data right now.

How??

I tried adding this repo but but yum says that there are no updates

My yumfoo isn't that good so I don't know how to force it. Besides I
tried through yum localinstall but it will revert when yum update is
run. It looks like it thinks that 3.3.1 is newer than 3.4

Re: [Users] Installing a lab setup from scratch using F18

2013-01-24 Thread noc

Sorry for the late reply, see comments inline.

2013-1-22 2:11, Joop:
As promised on IRC (jvandewege) I'll post my findings of setting up
an ovirt lab environment from scratch using F18.

First some background:
- 2 hosts for testing storage cluster with replicated gluster data
and iso domains (HP ML110 G5)

gluster data or cluster data?

Gluster

- 2 hosts for VMs (HP DL360 G5?)
- 1 managment server (HP ML110 G5)
All physical servers have atleast 1Gb connection and they also have 2
10Gb ethernet ports connected to two Arista switches.
Complete setup (except for the managment srv) is redundant. Using
F18-x64 DVD and using minimal server with extra tools, after install
the ovirt.repo and the beta gluster repo is activated.

This serves as a proof of concept for a bigger setup.

Problems sofar:
- looks like F18 uses a different path to access video since using
the defaults leads to garbled video, need to use nomodeset as a
kernel option
Do you mean the VDSM host installed with F18 or the guest in the host
with FC 18 here? I suppose you don't have much chance to access the
graphics screen of the VDSM host.

Talking about the hosts.

- upgrading the minimal install (yum upgrade) gives me
kernel-3.7.2-204 and the boot process halts with soft locks on
different cpus, reverting to 3.6.10-4.fc18.x86_64 fixes that.
Managment is using 3.7.2 kernel without problems BUT it doesn't use
libvirt/qemu-kvm/vdsm, my guess its related.
- need to disable NetworkManager and enable network (and ifcfg-xxx)
to get network going
- adding the storage hosts from de webui works but after reboot vdsm
is not starting, reason seems to be that network isn't initialised
until after all interfaces are done with their dhcp requests. There
are 4 interfaces which use dhcp, setting those to bootprotocol=none
seems the help.
Usually, I use the static IP for each server because the engine add
the VDSM host by IPs.
I set a static address too but still NetworkManager runs and tries to do
its best.
The DL360 machines run 3.7.2 without problems BUT they don't run the
latest gluster-3.4, that might be the difference or else they are immune
for this specific problem between 3.7.2 and ML110 hardware.

- during deploy their is a warning about 'cannot set tuned profile',
seems harmless but hadn't seen that one until now.
- the deployment script discovers during deployment that the ID of
the second storage server is identical to the first one and abort the
deployment (Blame HP!) shouldn't it generate a unique one using
uuidgen??

Host deployment went OK but for one thing and that the storage domain
wouldn't attach. Putting the host in maintenance mode and activating did
not help. It turnes out there are two problem of which one is already
solved:

- ntpd/chronyc SOLVED thanks to Gianluca
- host needs to have SELinux set to Permissive and then attach storage
domain works.
- on the managment host I still need NFSv3 settings in/etc/nfsmount.conf
or else iso-upload doesn't work

Things that are OK sofar:
- ovirt-engine setup (no problems with postgresql)
- creating/activating gluster volumes (no more deadlocks)

Adding virt hosts has to wait til tomorrow, got problems getting the
dvd iso onto an usb stick, will probably burn a DVD to keep going.
Migration works OK, powermanagment through ipmilan/ilo2 works,
export/import VMs, v2v test from esxi to ovirt, all OK ;-)

Setting up a storage network still needs to be tested

[Users] Different Clusters for virt-hosts and storage-hosts

2013-01-09 Thread noc

Hi All,

I'm trying out ovirt-nightly and would like to split my virtualisation
hosts from my storage hosts. So I setup a second cluster (Storage) which
will only do gluster storage, added two hosts to it, added two volumes
to it (gluster-data, gluster-iso) and added a master Data domain
(GlusterData) and an iso domain (GlusterIso). The storagetype is posixFS
and creating a disk is no problem but for one thing. When it has
finished I can't see it in the interface but it exists on disk and can
be selected when a VM is created.

Now for the real test ;-)
If I add a host to the default cluster it will display an error and end
up Non Operational because it can't connect to the storage (Failed to
connect Host host01 to the Storage Domains GlusterData). From vdsm.log I
see that it tries to mount but it fails:
Thread-20::DEBUG::2013-01-09
14:19:01,792::misc::84::Storage.Misc.excCmd::(lambda) '/bin/sudo -n
/bin/mount -t glusterfs st01.nieuwland.nl:/gluster-data
/rhev/data-center/mnt/st01.nieuwland.nl:_gluster-data' (cwd None)
Thread-20::ERROR::2013-01-09
14:19:01,933::hsm::2212::Storage.HSM::(connectStorageServer) Could not
connect to storageServer

Running the mount command by hand and mounting it to /mnt works OK.
Problem seems to be that ../mnt/st01.nieuwland.nl:_gluster-data doesn't
exist.

I'm doing something wrong and can't this not work because I'm not
understanding how clusters are supposed to work or should this work?

I switched to posixfs because I have similar problems when using NFS but
then between the two storage host when they are also virtualistation hosts.

This is test install so I can rebuild anything you want/need, I have the
logs from a clean install until now.

But when trying it out I found a little snag. I installed two hosts
with a minimal fed17 install, added a couple of repos to enable
installing the latest nightlies (it needed a later then 0.9 libvirt

gluster which outputs in xml (gluster-3.4..)

Steps:
- start with a clean engine-setup
- in the webui, set the cluster to 3.2 and virt+gluster, set the DC
to 3.2/NFS

- add the two hosts, went OK.
- add a Volume, gluster-data, gets created OK, BUT the Create Volume
'popup window' never stops spinning its busy cursor :-(
Looking at the logs I see that the volume is created, st01 is used,
st02 gets the message, creation is returning Succes but it looks like
the global lock is never released.
We have an issue with locking while creating a volume, fix for this is
currently under review.

I still might have the vdsm logs or else I can replay it to generate
them, but if it really is this issue then it they might not be needed.

Is the workaround I used a viable one? (restarting ovirt-engine)
