Just to clarify...

Site A has volume data2 which geo-replicates to Site B

Site B has volume data1 which geo-replicates to Site A

I will look at the engine upgrade and ansible today.

[ovirt-users] Re: Import Ge0-Replicated Storage Domain fails

2021-05-24 Thread simon
Thanks Strahil,

I was trying to do this manually first and was under the impression that Red
Hat Ansible Engine was fairly expensive, something that we are trying to avoid,
hence the oVirt environments.

I hadn't realised that our engine on the Site B had installed as 4.4.6
following a rebuild last week. The engine on SIte A is 4.4.5 - not sure if
that's an issue in this current failed import test?

Our 2 sites are both Primary and will have Production VMs. Both sites will be
geo-replicating to each other and therefore will both also be prospective DR
sites.

Any thoughts would be welcome.

[ovirt-users] Import Ge0-Replicated Storage Domain fails

2021-05-24 Thread simon
Hi All,

I have 2 independent Hyperconverged Sites/Data Centers.

Site A has a GlusterFS Replica 3 + Arbiter Volume that is Storage Domain data2
This Volume is Geo-Replicated to a Replica 3 + Arbiter Volume at Site B called
data2_bdt

I have simulated a DR event and now want to import the Ge0-Replicated volume
data2_bdt as a Storage Domain on Site B. Once imported I need to import the VMs
on this volume to run in Site B.

The Geo-Replication now works perfectly (thanks Strahil) but I haven't been
able to import the Storage Domain.

Please can someone point me in the right direction or documentation on how this
can be achieved.

If you are running on EL8 -> It's the SELINUX.
To verify that, stop the session and use 'setenforce 0' on both source and
destination.

To make it work with SELINUX , you will need to use 'sealert -a' extensively
(yum whatprovides '*/sealert').

[ovirt-users] Gluster Geo-Replication Fails

2021-05-17 Thread simon
Hi All,

I have to sites each with 2 x 3 Node clusters. oVirt 4.4.5 with GlusterFS 8.4.
On Site A I have a Replica 3 + Arbiter volume that I want to geo-replicate to
Site B.
I've setup a Replica 3 + Arbiter volume on Site B.
All password-less ssh requirements are in place and the Geo-Replication Session
has been created successfully.
I issue the 'Start' command successfully but the status switches between
'Initializing', 'Active' & 'Failed' within 20 seconds constantly.
Can anyone point me in the direction to get this up and running as it is our
proposed DR solution.

[ovirt-users] Re: [External] : OLVM: error deleting snapshot live

2021-05-04 Thread Simon Coter
Hi,

it’s a known regression due to updates on qemu/libvirt releases.
The easiest way to get it sorted out is to rollback to previous qemu-3.1.0-7
release on the KVM host.
Soon an update for qemu/libvirt will address the same.

Hi All,

I have a server with a RAID1 disk for sda and RAID 5 disk for sdb.

Following default install, prior to Cockpit Gluster and Engine wizards there is
only a single Volume Group which doesn’t allow me to continue.

If I manually configure the install and deselect sdb it gives other issues with
multipath but at least I can resolve those.

Is there a specific kickstart confuguration that should be used?

[ovirt-users] Reinstalled Host 4.4.4 bricks failing to start

2021-02-26 Thread simon
3 Node HCI - Local Storage Replica 2+1
After changing the Cluster 'Default Network Provider' from ovirt-provider-ovn
to 'No Default Provider' notification (as expected) to reinstall was flagged
against each host.
Host 3 (Arbiter) was reinstalled but failed to Activate due to Gluster Bricks
not starting. No GlusterFS process for the bricks is listed when checking
Status of glusterd.

Please can someone help to identify the issue and resolution.

Attempted further reinstallation of the Host fails.

[ovirt-users] oVirt Node install with Foreman VG issue

2021-02-22 Thread simon

Kind Regards

[ovirt-users] Re: [External] : Using VNC console on new cluster

2021-02-11 Thread Simon Coter
Hi Matthew,

this is a known issue for 4.3.6 release (OLVM or oVirt).
You should check if your KVM cluster has VNC Encryption enabled; if this is the
case you should:

  * disable VNC console for your Cluster (by OLVM/oVirt)
  * Comment out line "vnc_tls=1" in /etc/libvirt/qemu.conf on the KVM host.
  * Go to OLVM Web Console, Compute -> Hosts -> select ->
Management -> Maintenance, then Installation -> Reinstall, to apply above
change.
  * After above step reinstall KVM host, launch novnc VM console works fine.

Hope this helps.

Since I was forced to power off everything, (power outage), I’ve had no issue
with accessing the console on any host in the second cluster.

I have just created a third cluster. Same problem. No issues with hosts on
the first two clusters, but any host I’ve migrated to the third cluster, I
cannot access the console.

When I select a host, click on the button for ‘Console’ I get a download on my
browser, I tell the browser to open the download, and I get, what I think is
the Spice application starting and quitting in a second or two.

I’m not looking forward to telling my management that we need another power
outage.

Having installed oVirt 4.4.4 HCI 3 node cluster, the Grafana 'Monitoring

It appears that Grafana is installed but not configured.
I have checked a 4.4.3 environment and it is installed and running, so is this
a bug with 4.4.4.7-1.el8?
Any help would be appreciated.

we’re working on our own libvirt/qemu releases for OL8 (actually available
under dev channels) to then introduce OLVM 4.4.

We have errata-releases and bugs fixed into that.
BTW, yep we did some backport(s) and we also added one fix we pushed to oVirt
4.4 related to storage management (I do not remember now the details).

I do not expect particular issues; for OL we’re also working to the pure OL7 to
OL8 upgrade process.
BTW, I tested more times the moving from CentOS 7 to OL7 / oVirt to OLVM on 4.3
release.

We’re now on OLVM 4.3.6+
(https://blogs.oracle.com/virtualization/announcing-oracle-linux-virtualization-manager-43

and working on latest maintenance release (on 4.3.10+).
The plan is to then work on OLVM 4.4 with OL8.

based on the fact that CentOS7 is going to be maintained (and not closed in
December 2021) I would not force any moving to OLVM 4.3.10 (when
available)/OL7, unless you are interested on support.
Our plan, for sure, is to get OLVM 4.4 GA in the 2021 and, so, at that point
you could evaluate the moving.

yep, the script is on GitHub (if someone is interested to also leave feedback):
https://github.com/oracle/centos2ol <https://github.com/oracle/centos2ol>
for oVirt we’ve dedicated channels for OL7, you’re right.

This one could be for sure a valid plan.

I do not have a date that can be shared actually but I would suggest you to
start now with oVirt; a possible migration will be always possible if needed.

This issue has rendered mu upgrade to 4.4 useless. Does anyone have a patched

[ovirt-users] Re: Deploy oVirt Engine fail behind proxy

2020-11-10 Thread Simon Coter
Hi Matteo,

this one is the solution we’ve applied on OLVM that should also work for oVirt:

Before Deploying Self Hosted Engine(SHE) update the below lines in
/usr/share/ansible/roles/ovirt.hosted-engine-setup/hooks/enginevm_before_engine_setup/install_pre_setup_packages.yml

From

- name:Install oVirt Engine packages for restoring backup
package:
name: "ovirt-engine"
state: present
when: ovirt_engine_setup_product_type | lower == 'ovirt'
 To

-name: Install oVirt Engine packages for restoring backup
package:
 name: "ovirt-engine"
 state: present
environment:
 https_proxy:
 http_proxy:
when: ovirt_engine_setup_product_type | lower == 'ovirt'

In place of add your own proxy; example: http://myproxy:3128
<http://myproxy:3128/>

Hope this helps.

[ovirt-users] Re: HCI with 5 node quest

2020-11-01 Thread Simon Scott
Apologies Strahill,

I don’t think my question was very clear - my fault.

In all the documentation on HCI that I’ve read, it clearly states the the 3
node HCI model can only be expanded in multiples of 3 nodes, i.e. 3, 6, 9, 12.

I don’t know if I missed a basic explanation somewhere but is there any reason
I can’t have a 5 node cluster with multiple Gluster Replica 3 volumes utilising
any of the 5 nodes in the same Gluster Peer Group?

Kind Regards

Shimme

2020-11-01 Thread simon
I have a 3 node HCI setup with 2 Replica 3 volumes using nodes 1, 2 & 3 and
have added 2 additional Compute nodes to this Cluster.

What is stopping me from adding nodes 4 & 5 as Gluster Peers and creating a
glusterfs Replica 3 Volume using nodes 3, 4 & 5?

[ovirt-users] Re: Hosted Engine install via cockpit - proxy issue

2020-10-29 Thread Simon Scott
Thanks for your response Marcel.

The issue was never a problem on 4.3.

I should clarify that the Hosts are built using the oVirt node ISO and
Gluster/Hosted Engine are deployed using CockPit.

When initiating the Hosted Engine install using cockpit, the install is
automated.

This issue appears to be very specific to 4.4 using cockpit.

Hi Simon,

Usually it is the network, but you need real-world data. I would open screen

while true; do echo -n "$(date) "; timeout -s 9 1 ping -c 1 ovirt2 | grep
icmp_seq; sleep 1; done | tee -a /tmp/icmp_log

Are all systems in the same network ?
What about dns resolution - do you have entries in /etc/hosts ?

Based on this one I make the following conclusions:
1. Issue is reoccuring
2. You most probably have a network issue

Have you checked the following:
- are there any ping timeouts between fuse clients and gluster nodes
- Have you tried to disable fencing and check the logs after the issue reoccurs
- Are you sharing Blackup and Prod networks ? Is it possible some backup/other
production load in your environment to "black-out" your oVirt ?
- Have you check the gluster cluster's logs for anything meaningful ?

[ovirt-users] Gluster volume not responding

2020-10-08 Thread simon
Hi,

Every Monday and Wednesday morning there are gluster connectivity timeouts but
all checks of the network and network configs are ok.

Description of problem:

The following entries were found in the engine.log following VMs becoming
unresponsive and hosts fencing. This issue has been causing issues since the
beginning of September and no amount of reading logs is helping. This issue
occurs every Wednesday morning at exactly the same time.

2020-04-17 Thread Simon Nylund
The only way for me to choose another storage domain for the HE, was when i did
a /usr/sbin/ovirt-hosted-engine-cleanup on one of the nodes, and then
hosted-engine --deploy --restore-from-file=backup/file_name.

After that I ended up with HE running on the new storage domain, and the data
still remained on the old storage domain.

But how do I connect the other node to this environment after that?

Thanks for the answer,

The goal is to move our current HE storage domain on an external gluster, to a
gluster storage on our nodes instead.

So move HE from one gluster to another gluster.

[ovirt-users] Migrate engine to another storage domain without losing engine settings?

2020-04-15 Thread Simon Nylund
Have been trying to figure out a simple way of migrating our hosted-engine to
another storage domain, while keeping the data on the same domain.

Is there any safe way of doing this? Fortunately I've only tested this in a dev
environment, where I ended up with not being to able to restore the backup I
did.

The only way I got it to work was to deploy a fresh engine attached to the new
storage domain, and then import the data storage domain containing the vms.
The problem with that is that I lose all the settings I had in my hosted
engine, and the hosts.

[ovirt-users] Migrate engine to another storage domain?

2020-04-15 Thread Simon Nylund
Is there a successful way of migrating an up and running engine to another
storage domain?

I've been reading through the archive and tested a few various ways without any
success. The only way i found working without errors was deploying a new engine
attached to the new storage domain, and import the old data domain for the vms,
but then you lose all the settings for the previous engine (ofc). And have to
redo all of that.

[ovirt-users] Re: Debian guest Agent

2020-03-26 Thread Mathieu Simon
Hi

At least in oVirt 4.3 I've made the experience that you still need the
ovirt-guest-agent and that qemu-guest-agent alone was not sufficient.
Additionally the agent in Debian 9 is to old and does not start on
oVirt 4.2 or newer if I remember correctly.

I've often taken the newer package from Debian 10 which works, but
others have also worked out workarounds.

This blog linked below looks ok, to me, at least this author is
correct about the device change from
/dev/virtio-ports/com.redhat.rhevm.vdsm
/dev/virtio-ports/ovirt-guest-agent.0 which the ovirt-guest-agent in
Debian 9 and older doesn't recognize out of the box:

Yes, that does indeed. Last time I checked the Lifecycle Page of RHV*
I remembered that no EUS was planned.
Maybe that's the somewhat confusing part where it still says that no
EUS support is given for 4.3, however support ends April 2021,
which gives some time for the transition, which is the important part
to me due to the migration to an EL8 base - to which I'm otherwise
looking forward to.

Speaking in terms of RHV (explicitely not oVirt) this means that since 4.3
has no EUS support (only 4.2) all systems on 4.3 will have to upgrade to
4.4 pretty much instantly after RHV 4.4 becomes available in order to
receive further security updates if I understand this correctly.
(I guess that those with hosted engine will be in an easier position.)

Thanks for the clarification.

Hmm, though I don't think Red Hat will particularly like it, but when
it comes to just the drivers, not the full ISO with the RHV/oVirt
guest agents there might be a way.
You can get a free developer subscription of RHEL (8) and then
download the virtio-win package. These contain WHQL drivers with a
valid signature.

I haven't had the ability to test it but I've checked the signature. I
hope that this helps you a bit.

Hi Roy

Exactly, you can only reliably change the CPU type for a cluster once
the last Westmere-based host is gone.

That's what I had to do when I when we upgraded CPU microcode on
clusters to enable the various CPU mitigations within the guests.
After changing the CPU type at the cluster level, you should see an
orange triangle shown with each VM in the Web UI indicating what
VM needs a restart in order to pick up the change.

Because of those various updates to CPU microcodes, check your current
BIOS/UEFI (though microcode is part of CentOS/RHEL) then check the
CPU Type in the tab of each Broadwell-based host. As of writing,
ideally set "Intel Broadwell IBRS SSBD MDS" (or the -noTSX) variant.

Maybe I wasn't clear: You first need to check whether your Hyper-V VM
in question is a Gen 2 UEFI-based VM or a legacy BIOS-based
Gen 1 VM. (It's quite likely Gen 2 since this has been the default
since Hyper-V on Server 2012 R2)
This defines the way on how the destination VM on the oVirt side needs
to be configured.

Once that is identified, try the according machine type on the oVirt
side there that converted disk is attached to:
- Hyper-V Gen 1 => oVirt 440FX + SeaBIOS (default in oVirt as of writing)
- Hyper-V Gen 2 => oVirt Q35 + OVMF

As written previously: There are still plenty of limitations in the
UEFI guest support and they sometimes
need workarounds until hopefully oVirt 4.4 closes most of these gaps.

[ovirt-users] Re: Hyper-V to KVM | v2v

2019-12-07 Thread Mathieu Simon
Hi Vijay

Based on your initial post about using virt-v2v I don't know how
intelligent virt-v2v is in knowing and converting the VM machine type.

However the boot issue could be related to Hyper-V defaulting to "Gen 2"
VMs which are all UEFI based. Hence your current VMs
should have a FAT32 partition with an EFI loader. oVirt by default emulates
440FX Chipset and a legacy SeaBIOS.
Only so-called Gen 1 VMs were emulating a legacy BIOS on the Hyper-V side.

You should be able to check VM generation on Hyper-V using this PowerShell
command:
Get-VM | Format-List Name,Generation

If it is a Gen 2 VM, starting with oVirt 4.3 you could try booting a
converted disk on a VM with Q35 and OVMF (UEFI).
Keep in mind that 4.3 still has some rough edges in that area. For example
all settings written to the UEFI NVRAM get lost when turning off
and on the VM in oVirt. This affects the bootloader entries in OVMF that an
OS installer eventually created during setup.
Thus the OVMF only ever looks for an EFI loader bootloader in the path
boot/efi/bootx64.efi in that FAT32 partition.

However if that path is not present, OVMF should open the "BIOS settings"
and you should be able to "boot from file" and then
select the .efi file if the given operating system and make an attempt at
booting the guest OS.

The current workaround that seems to work now is to copy the OS's .efi
loader to the default location OVMF is looking for a bootloader
as described here: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1727987

While you can and SPICE does a reasonable job at being quite
well-suited, please be aware that it does reach its limits
when you do media intensive work.

There is a reason why my workplace has dropped virtual desktops as a

It didn't scale very well in terms of latency and had issues with

I could imagine that it could work reasonably well in an office

[ovirt-users] Re: oVirt/RHV 4.3.6: How to boot a Q35/UEFI VM from CD?

2019-11-04 Thread Mathieu Simon
Hi

The first issue of booting UEFI guests at all is resolved, honestly I
don't know what I messed up the first time with Windows guests.
TL;DR: Q35 and UEFI (with or without SecureBoot) should do the job in
many cases.

> Can you give a try of the workaround in
> https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1727987#c0 ?
>
> At least it works for RHEL 8 (and most probably CentOS 8).
Thanks for pointing to this Bugzilla. But no, I'm pretty certain it's
only partially related in the case for Debian.
I've tried to replicate your findings with both RHEL and CentOS 8.0
ISOs but failed to get the guests booted into the installed
(Stops at "pciehp... Failed to check link status") nonetheless I'll
share my findings with Debian on that bug if possible.

TL;DR: The issue affecting Debian and openSuse however ends up being the same:
Lack of a persistent NVRAM in oVirt guests as Michael Skrivanek as
outlined there.

While openSuse has its own signing keys but in the "default
right"place for OVMF (boot/bootx64.efi), Debian has obtained a
Microsoft-signed shim loader like RHEL but doesn't put in the place
where the non-persisted OVMF is looking for (debian/shimx64.efi).
("mokutil --db" from a UEFI guest shows the 2 main Microsoft UEFI CAs
included in the OVMF image of oVirt guests.)

Ubuntu - confirmed with 18.04 - seems to do something clever: They
seem to put an extra copy of ubuntu/shimx64.efi into the
default location boot/boox64.efi where even the most broken UEFI
implementations (read: often old physical ones in my experience) look
for a loader.
RHEL8 seems to do a similar thing on other UEFI platforms, but I've
only been able to get RHEL8 booted/installed in UEFI mode on (FreeBSD)
bhyve
as of writing.

Debian doesn't do that sort of thing (yet) so you need to copy
debian/shimx64.efi to BOOT/BOOTX64.EFI then booting works.
You need to manually update that copy on Debian whenever they ship a
new version of that binary but at least it does work.

Mathieu

Hi

Am Sa., 2. Nov. 2019 um 08:51 Uhr schrieb Strahil Nikolov

> Have you tried with another ISO ?
This is quite weird, still better than my initial testing but here it
goes. I've slimmed down my attempts to Q35 and UEFI (both on and off):

- Server 2019 ISO boots into installer with or without SecureBoot
enabled (I clearly remember it didn't work in any combination I've
tried, but now it did, anyhow). The OS installes and boots with
SecureBoot enabled
- Server 2016 ISO fails to boot right at the windows bootloader*,
however I don't care for Server 2016 that much anymore at that point
in time, and it could well be that the ISO image could be of an older
revision
(MS does release updated images from time to time)
- Debian 10 boots of the CD, however it doesn't seem like NVRAM
changes are saved in oVirt / RHV guests yet. So at boot the OS doesn't
start and you have to once boot from file (EFI disk -> EFI -> debian
-> shimx64.efi)
After the boot you you have to copy all (or only shimx64.efi?) to
/boot/efi/EFI/BOOT as BOOTX64.EFI like Windows. Debian 10 has a
Microsoft-signed shim loader so SecureBoot actually works.
- Ubuntu 18.04 boots of the disc, installs and boots since their
installer puts a copy of shimx64.efi into /boot/efi/EFI/BOOT which is
where OVMF looks for a loader

I'm I correctly guessing based on looking at the "VM devices" list per
VM that oVirt/RHV doesn't yet provide a way to provide a persistent
NVRAM image to guests?
Sso for the time being we're actually stuck on Linux systems to have a
EFI/BOOT/BOOTX64.EFI present? Is this the issue you wrote about?
(I've encountered this very same issue on plain KVM and Proxmox, in
both cases a small disk image is required per VM to make the content
of the NVRAM persistent across VM reboots)

[ovirt-users] oVirt/RHV 4.3.6: How to boot a Q35/UEFI VM from CD?

2019-10-29 Thread mathieu . simon
Hi

I've been experimenting with UEFI on RHV 4.3.6 using Windows Server 2019 but I
guess posting on the oVirt list might reach a wider audience.
I've used UEFI guests on other KVM-based virtualizations, but I have been
unable to detect a UEFI-bootable CD using Q35 VMs with or without SecureBoot in
RHV 4.3.6 since it doesn't even propose to load the UEFI loader from within
OVMF. It seems to show the CD-ROM drive, but I cannot boot from file the disc
from OVMF:

Are there any hints? (I've tried finding something more detailed in the Docs
though) I'd like investigate UEFI and SecureBoot on oVirt/RHV even if it's
still considered a tech preview. (I've been using KVM-based UEFI VM for years
already on other platforms and distributions with no particular issues, rather
advantages overall).

So in the case here, the work was already started outside of the ovirt engine
UI.

I inherited the problem, so far I've made sure to point the em1,3 to the bond0,
confirmed it was working (in mode 4, lacp), pointed the bond0 to the ovirtmgmt
bridge. Now the current setup uses dhcp and the IP address is successfully
assigned.

One of the issue I'm seeing right now is that the hosted engine VM will not
start. So I started looking a bit further and I can see that route has some
issues:

192.168.20.0/24 dev em1 proto kernel scope link src 192.168.20.108
192.168.20.0/24 dev ovirtmgmt proto kernel scope link src 192.168.20.108

The first line prevents the host from talking to it's default gateway (20.1)
because it's using em1 which has no IP (part of bond0) If I remove the line
from the routing table, I can successfully ping the default gateway through the
ovirtmgmt interface.

I can't figure out how to prevent the system from recreating the first line
during a reboot.

I don’t know if this is one of the reason why the engine fails or not, but
since the ovirt startup process seems to validate ping, when the services are
starting during boot time, they'll fail because that route is re-added.

Thanks again

Simon

All modifications should be done via oVirt Engine, e.g. in Administration
Portal via Compute > Hosts > hostname > Network Interfaces > Setup Host
Networks because this way the change will be rolled back automatically on
failures.

Because this change modifies many aspects of the management network, I would
recommend to add a temporary second host, migrate the hosted Engine on this
second host, and put the first host in maintenance and migrate back to the
first host after the change succeeded.

[ovirt-users] 4.3 hosted-engine setup & yum-utils RPM installation

2019-05-30 Thread Simon Coter
Hi,

is there any particular reason to get “yum-utils” (and its dependency) RPM
installed during the hosted-engine deployment ?
I mean, why don’t we get yum-utils RPM part of the hosted-engine image ?
This “yum” process, executed during the deployment, could fail (or wait
forever) if the host/engine is behind a proxy — while trying to install the
RPMs.
I see two options:

get all the required RPMs part of the hosted-engine image
add the option to supply a proxy for yum during the hosted-engine setup

Could this be a request for enhancement ?
Thanks

[ovirt-users] Re: oVirtNode 4.3.3 - Missing os-brick

2019-04-16 Thread Simon Coter
Hi,

had the same issue and fixed it by installing:

Name: python2-os-brick
Arch: noarch
Version : 2.5.6
Release : 1.el7
Size: 3.5 M
Repo: installed
From repo : openstack-rocky
Summary : OpenStack Cinder brick library for managing local volume attaches
URL : http://www.openstack.org/
License : ASL 2.0
Description :
: OpenStack Cinder brick library for managing local volume attaches

Not so elegant because this RPM is not part of oVirt channels.

Agree, but the messaging could be improved.
Perception is that something is “really” missing and the same could compromise
the normal functionality.

[ovirt-users] Re: Are people still experiencing issues with GlusterFS on 4.3x?

2019-03-15 Thread Simon Coter
Hi,

something that I’m seeing in the vdsm.log, that I think is gluster related is
the following message:

2019-03-15 05:58:28,980-0700 INFO (jsonrpc/6) [root] managedvolume not
supported: Managed Volume Not Supported. Missing package os-brick.: ('Cannot
import os_brick',) (caps:148)

os_brick seems something available by openstack channels but I didn’t verify.

[ovirt-users] Re: 4.2.7 & centos 7.6 dependency problems

2018-12-06 Thread Simon Coter
Hi Tibor,

the update is trying to install:

nbdkit(x86-64) = 1.2.7-2.el7

while you only have:

nbdkit(x86-64) = 1.2.6-1.el7_6.2

1.2.7 release is available on ovirt-4.2-epel repository while 1.2.6 is part of
CentOS “Base” and “Updates”.
The problem is that "nbdkit-plugin-vddk” has only 1.2.6 release and this
depends on “ndbkit”.
Possible workaround that should work:

Edit the .repo containing “ovirt-4.2-epel” and add the following line to
the “ovirt-4.2-epel” entry:

exclude=ndbkit*

then, rerun the update.

[ovirt-users] Re: [OT] Xen/Oracle VM under Qemu-kvm/oVirt

2018-12-04 Thread Simon Coter
Hi Gianluca,

what is your target for OVM 3.4.4 ? Migrate from OVM to oVirt/KVM ?
If this is the target you do not require the OVM Pool-Filesystem.
Can you please share further details ?

I’ve an OVM 3.4 server running as nested VM on KVM/oVirt. Did you try an
updated OVM 3.4.5 (or 3.4.6) ?

Right, but you also have Xen.

[ovirt-users] Re: non-ovirt node as gluster node

2018-11-06 Thread Simon Coter
Quick question on this:

is there a solution/procedure to get from a standard installation to a hyper
converged one ?
Like if I have 3 servers with local-storage and one external engine managing
all of them; is there a step-by-step procedure to move to hyper converged ?

To avoid duplication I have already attached them to the bug report here:

I have successfully moved all my other VMs disks, it is just this one VM
that has a disk that always fails to move.

[ovirt-users] Adding arbiter to hyperconverged setup

2018-09-26 Thread Simon Nussbaum
Dear all

We are very happily running a hyperconverged gluster ovirt setup since
beginning of 2016. Because we couldn't afford 3 well-equipped servers, we've
set-up replica 3 with one arbiter gluster cluster. Back then the gluster
integration in oVirt wasn't where it is today. We did not add the arbiter node
to oVirt. Since then a lot changed and we suspect that from time to time we run
into problems because we haven't added the arbiter node as a host to oVirt. We
also think that we may profit from features and higher visibility in oVirt when
it is aware of all gluster nodes. Now, we are thinking of adding the third, the
arbiter host. Today we are using oVirt 4.2.0.2 and GlusterFS 3.12 on CentOS
7.4. We see two ways to accomplish this:
1) Add it as a new host
2) Import it as the discovered host in Compute >> Clusters >> OurCluster

The questions we have:
* First of all, is this a good idea anyway?
* Do we need to install vdsmd on the arbiter node?
* What is or is there difference between the two ways? Will it discover the
gluster configuration or break it?

Before we break it we would love to hear what you guys think.

Thanks a lot
Simon

[ovirt-users] Moving all disks to new storage domain

2018-09-10 Thread Simon Vincent
I need to decommission an old SAN so I have connected a new one into ovirt
as a new storage domain. I would like to use a python script to move all
disks/snapshots/everything over to the new storage domain but I am having
some problems.

I am trying to search for all VMs using a particular storage domain but
this is not working how I would like. The code I am using is:
vms = vms_service.list(search='Storage=team-data')
However this is returning VMs which are using storage domains 'team-data'
and 'team-data2'. Is this a bug or is there another way to return vms from
just 'team-data'?

My script so far is:

connection = sdk.Connection(
  url=ovaddress,
  username=username,
  password=password,
  insecure=True
)

system_service = connection.system_service()
vms_service = system_service.vms_service()
disks_service = connection.system_service().disks_service()

vms = vms_service.list(search='Storage=team-data')
sds_service = connection.system_service().storage_domains_service()

dest_sd = sds_service.list(search='name=team-data2')
if len(dest_sd)!=1:
exit()
dest_sd=dest_sd[0]

for vm in vms:
   print (vm.name)
   vm_service = vms_service.vm_service(vm.id)
   disk_attachments = vm_service.disk_attachments_service().list()
   for disk_attachment in disk_attachments:
   disk = connection.follow_link(disk_attachment.disk)
   print (" disk: " + disk.name)
   disk_service = disks_service.disk_service(disk.id)
   disk_service.move(storage_domain=dest_sd)
   while True:
print("Waiting for movement to complete ...")
   time.sleep(10)
   disk = disk_service.get()
   if disk.status == types.DiskStatus.OK:
   break

connection.close()

I do not strictly care about the number of LUNs; I care of possible “max”
limits around the solution, to better understand how an architecture should be
created/designed while using oVirt.

but OVA is a clear open format where more companies in the past agreed to work
on.
So, the compliancy on the format is pretty clear and the target, at the end, is
to move to/from one hypervisor to an other by using this “standard” format
(where each hypervisor has its own - vmdk for VMware / vdi for VBox and so on).

Different thing is the possible issue while trying to boot the VM on the target
hypervisor, issue usually due to the missing storage/network drivers while
booting (initrd/initramfs and/or win-kernel).
I’m used to get everything easily created on VirtualBox (with Vagrant) and then
get the same VM available on the “server” hypervisor by OVA export/import.

At the same time, as a developer, I want to play with a VM on my own laptop (by
using VBox, VMware), a VM that is a clone of what is running on oVirt/KVM
production; and here why the OVA compliancy should be respected.

Hi Gonzalo,

thanks for your help!
Actually I'm not interested to test the LDAP integration.
I've just read the links you've shared but I haven't been able to correctly
understand how-to create roles associated to specific object.
For example, I would like to create a role of "DataCenterAdmin" only for a
specific datacenter (not all of them); from the documentation it's not
clear to me how-to accomplish this target.
Am I loosing something ?
Thanks

Hi Nicola,

CPU pinning granted by oVirt is not a supported method to apply
hardware-partitioning for Oracle products on top of VMs.
The only supported method/solution is available on Oracle VM Server. You
can see further details at:

I have created a python script using the oVirt SDK but I can't find an API

using the API as if you shutdown the hosted engine the API will stop
working.
I guess the only way to stop the hosted engine and shutdown hosts is via
SSH or some kind of agent?

[ovirt-users] Emergency shutdown script

Does anyone have a way of shutting down oVirt automatically in the case of
a power outage?

Ideally I would like a script that can be automatically run when the UPS
reaches a certain level. I had a look at the python SDK but I could only
find functions for shutting down VMs and not hosts. Also I suspect this
wont let me shutdown the hosted engine VM.

Any ideas?

[ovirt-users] Upgrading libguestfs to import debian VM

2017-04-06 Thread Simon Vincent
I find that running oVirt 4.1.1 I can not import any debian based VMs as
virt-v2v/libguestfs is too old.
This bug report https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1362497
indicates that newer versions of libguestfs support importing debian and
Ubuntu VMs.

Are there any plans to include a newer version of libguestfs in oVirt soon?
If I built a newer version of libguestfs on my ovirt-node would it break
everything?

[ovirt-users] Passing VLAN trunk to VM

2017-03-09 Thread Simon Vincent
Is it possible to pass multiple VLANs to a VM (pfSense) using a single
virtual NIC? All my existing oVirt networks are setup as a single tagged
VLAN. I know this didn't used to be supported but wondered if this has
changed. My other option is to pass each VLAN as a separate NIC to the VM
however if I needed to add a new VLAN I would have to add a new interface
and reboot the VM as hot-add of NICs is not supported by pfSense.

[ovirt-users] Problems adding iSCSI storage domain

2017-03-07 Thread Simon Vincent
I have setup a small cluster running a hosted engine using iSCSI. I tried
to add a new iSCSI storage domain but this failed as not all hosts could
access the storage server. I fixed this problem but it now does not let me
add the new storage domain as it shows "lun is already part of storage
domain". The engine does not show any storage domains but if I look in the
database it shows up there.
How do I remove this broken storage domain and then re-add it?

I'm curious how we can change the email addresses that the hosted-engine-ha

I see the same issue if I clone a preallocated VM. The size on disk ends up

Re: [ovirt-users] vhostmd vdsm-hook

2016-04-19 Thread Simon Barrett
Thanks again but how does that work when a VM is configured to have more than
one disk?

If I have a VM with a /dev/vda disk and a /dev/vdb disk, when I turn the
vhostmd hook on the vm metric device gets created as /dev/vdb and the original
/dev/vdb disk gets bumped to /dev/vdc.

Is that expected behavior? Will that not cause problems?

Thanks,

Simon

The metric information are available on this additional disk /dev/vdb. You may
install the package vm-dump-metrics and use the command vm-dump-metrics which
will display all metrics in an xml format.
