Ok, thanks for confirmation.
Indeed in case of ovirt-node-ng (or RHV-H for RHV) the update is only one
1Gb sized package containing the new image, but for plain CentOS Stream /
CentOS (or RH EL 8 hosts for RHV) it can contain a hundred of packages and
so a hundred of transactions vs one.

By the way, it does look like downgrading libvirt version will solve the
problem, as discussed on the bug:

I don´t think so, as it is not a problem with our packages. Unfortunately
this is something that is expected right? As far as I remember this is one
of the major complaints with the CentOS Stream model, breakage can happen
every now and then. There is no way to ensure stability of the packages
there. For the tested and stable versions, we have the CentOS Virt SIG.

You are correct. It was implemented this way taking in consideration the
output when checking for updates on RHVH hosts.
This implementation is indeed going to be changed, so that upgrade will
become faster

For sure. This is always true. In my case part of the update is updating
the host from 8.3 to 8.4, so many packages involved.
And my observation is that it seems as if the process updates all the
packages one by one as subsequent commands, with an unneeded long time in
my opinion.
Each time it seems it goes through transaction test and so on...
Very very suboptimal if it is true and confirmed.

>From an ansible point of view it seems that it happens something like this

- name: ensure a list of packages installed
  yum:
name: "{{ item }}"
   state: latest
  loop: "{{ packages }}"

instead of

- name: ensure a list of packages installed
  yum:
name: "{{ packages }}"
state: latest

Where {{ packages }} is a pre-computed (probably in a previous step) list
of packages to be updated.

I've run into a similar problem when using VDO + LVM + XFS stacks, also with
ZFS.

If you're trying to use ZFS on 4.4, my recommendation is don't. You have to run
the testing branch at minimum, and quiet a few things just don't work.

As for VDO, i ran into this issue when using VDO and a NVME for LVM caching of
the thin pool, VDO would throw a fit and under high load scenario, VM's would
regularly pause.

VDO with no cache was fine however, seems to be related to mixing device types
/ block sizes (even if you override block sizes).

Not sure if that helps.

With older versions of gluster and ovirt the same happens. If I use a NFS

Qemu-ga does not report containers. This feature was only present in
ovirt-guest-agent (i.e. it is unavailable on RHEL 8 guest) and it worked
only for docker (i.e. no podman containers).

[ovirt-users] Re: Update of plain CentOS hosts very slow

2021-06-09 Thread Dana Elfassy
Hi Gianluca,
Upgrade host time depends on the upgrading that needs to be done
As for your second question, we updated ansible only if there was another
package which required a new version of it, and we have used a different
(temporarily created) yum.conf file which had the setting best=False, so
yes, this behavior is currently expected, (and will be changed as we're
going to allow updating ansible package for el8 hosts too)
Hope this helps,
Dana

[ovirt-users] Re: libvirt 7.4 update breaking ovirt 4.4.6 on centos 8 stream

2021-06-09 Thread Sandro Bonazzola
thanks for the report, looping in +Eduardo Lima
and +Danilo
Cesar Lemes de Paula .
Eduardo, Danilo, can you get selinux policy quickly fixed? If not it's
probably better to retire the libvirt build to avoid further breakages.

Eduardo, next time please wait to get test results before tagging to
release:
Tue Jun 8 14:47:42 2021 libvirt-7.4.0-1.el8s tagged into
virt8s-advancedvirt-common-candidate by etrunko [still active]
Tue Jun 8 16:21:14 2021 libvirt-7.4.0-1.el8s tagged into
virt8s-advancedvirt-common-testing by etrunko [still active]
Tue Jun 8 16:21:17 2021 libvirt-7.4.0-1.el8s tagged into
virt8s-advancedvirt-common-release by etrunko [still active]

we can get you feedback in few hours from oVirt CI consuming the test builds

I think you should be able to do this using 'engine-setup' (perhaps
with '--offline' if you want to prevent upgrades).

Please note that 4.3 is EOL.

[ovirt-users] Re: Is there a way to find the creation date of a Virtual Machines from Ovirt Manager

2021-06-09 Thread Ritesh Chikatwar
I think you can get the creation date from one more way.
Compute -> Virtual machine -> click on Vm -> go to Disks tab -> see the
boot disk name then
Go to Storage -> Disks -> search for the disk name -> click on disk -> go
to permission tab you can see the disk creation date. You can refer to the
creation date of the Disk Operator role.

Note:
This date will be the date of disk creation of the boot disk. If you
created vm and added disk on the same day then this is true.

Creation date of vm is not shown in the Ui. There is one option: you can

This is indeed off-topic, but I do not think we have to hide anything
- everyone knows that almost all of oVirt's development is done by Red
Hat people.

For many years, the oVirt project struggled with our scheduling and
release cycles - we wanted to be able to use and rely on newer
features of RHEL, when available, but also to do a decent job for
oVirt users, who do not have access to RHEL the moment it's GA. As
developers, and also as Red Hatters, we already had access to internal
development versions of RHEL, so could QA on them prior to releases
(of both RHEL and oVirt/RHV). But what to do with oVirt users? It was
always hard. We often ended up rebuilding RHEL SRPMs right after their
release, in copr, before CentOS included them, for oVirt - including
adding these to ovirt-release* rpms, and including having to later
remove them from there once CentOS did include them - just so that
oVirt users can use them before they are available in CentOS Linux.

With the move to CentOS Stream, all of this is gone. oVirt is only
building upon Stream, always has the latest bits, and everyone is
happy!
Well, at least in theory. In practice, everything is still new to all
of us, but I think that generally speaking, things are working well.

To answer your direct question: RHV 4.4.6 is based on RHEL+AV 8.4, and
the release dates of each part were coordinated internally for this.

Best regards,

When i performe a restore of Zimbra Collaboration Email with features.shard on,
the VM pauses with an unknown storage error.
When I performe a restore of Zimbra Collaboration Email with features.shard
off, it fills all the gluster storage domain disks.

With older versions of gluster and ovirt the same happens. If I use a NFS
storage domain it runs OK.

[ovirt-users] Re: Booting VMs from RHEL ISOs fail

2021-06-08 Thread David White via Users
Correct, I didn't see any errors.
I seem to recall this happening to me a couple months ago or so when I was
first setting up the environment as well.

I'll spend some time (it may not be until this weekend) trying to reproduce the
error, and collecting some logs.

No, I do not use an external certificate.
(And I did / do use the "Test Connection" button)

Which logs would be helpful?

Sent with ProtonMail Secure Email.

[ovirt-users] Re: oVirt + Gluster issues

2021-06-08 Thread Alex McWhirter

I've run into a similar problem when using VDO + LVM + XFS stacks, also
with ZFS.

If you're trying to use ZFS on 4.4, my recommendation is don't. You have
to run the testing branch at minimum, and quiet a few things just don't
work.

As for VDO, i ran into this issue when using VDO and a NVME for LVM
caching of the thin pool, VDO would throw a fit and under high load
scenario, VM's would regularly pause.

VDO with no cache was fine however, seems to be related to mixing device
types / block sizes (even if you override block sizes).

Not sure if that helps.

enough), uou can check vdsm's log on all hosts and identify when the VM was

I was referring to the downstream product with RHV-H 4.4.6... it is because
of this that I used the [OT]
I'm not sure if this 4.6 level is ready only upstream right now and needs
further improvements to go downstream to RHV, or if it is already there
production ready.

[ovirt-users] Re: Requirements to put to cluster version 4.6

2021-06-08 Thread Martin Perina
Hi Gianluca,

As mentioned in below RFE, EL 8.4 is not enough, you also need Advanced
Virtualization 8.4 (libvirt >= 7.0.0) and AFAIK this has not been released
upstream:

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1933974

So right now you can use 4.6 cluster level only on hosts running on CentOS
Stream.

Also the error message tells you that all your Up hosts need to provide EL
+ AV 8.4 features before you upgrade cluster level. But of course you can
upgrade them one by one, it's not required to put all hosts into
Maintenance before upgrade.

Regards,
Martin

[ovirt-users] Re: Hosted-Engine import

2021-06-08 Thread Harry O
I think there is not hosted-engine configuration on the node, but I have backup
of hosted-engine config files from node only, not a real hosted-engine backup,
I also have access to the engine gluster vol it ran on. Can I combine
hosted-engine config files from node and the engine vm gluster data to get the
hostedengine up and running?

[ovirt-users] Re: Ovirt node 4.4.5 failure to upgrade to 4.4.6

2021-06-08 Thread Guillaume Pavese
Thank you, I'll try on the 3rd host if the same problem happens (likely)
In the meantime I managed to advance a bit on my 2nd host (but I did not
get the chance to try your suggestion of '--rpmverbosity')

The failure to install ovirt-node-ng-image-update seems to be linked with
the errors messages that I reported previously regarding the impossibility
to stop vdsmd.
On the hosts that were refusing to update or install the rpm, I was also
unable to stop vdsmd or supervdsmd :

[root@ps-inf-prd-kvm-fr-511 ~]# systemctl stop vdsmd
Job for vdsmd.service canceled.

[root@ps-inf-prd-kvm-fr-511 ~]# systemctl stop supervdsmd
Job for supervdsmd.service canceled.

I managed to stop them only after stopping ovirt-ha-broker & ovirt-ha-agent
Once these services down, the manual install of ovirt-node-ng-image-update
succeeded.

iSCSI multipath was not working after reboot, I had to manually rediscover
the targets
After all that, I could finally do a successful Host Reinstall from oVirt.

With the latest version of gluster, when geo-replication is in setup, the
slave volume will be set to read-only.
Before you could import that storage domain, make sure to disable read-only
on the slave volume.
# gluster volume set features.read-only off

I do not think the documentation details available upstream.
@Ritesh Chikatwar Could you check, whether the
documentation is available upstream.

Thanks,

Looks similar to the other thread "[ovirt-users] Booting VMs from RHEL

about your setup - perhaps open a bug and attach all relevant logs.
Thanks.

[ovirt-users] Re: Ovirt node 4.4.5 failure to upgrade to 4.4.6

2021-06-07 Thread Guillaume Pavese
Hello,

I used the cluster upgrade feature that moves hosts in maintenance one by
one.
This is not a HCI cluster, my storage is on iSCSI multipath

I managed to fully upgrade the 1st hosts after rebooting and fixing some
network/iSCSI errors.
However, now the second one is stuck at upgrading the ovirt-node layers too
but I can not succeed in upgrading that one.
On this 2nd host, the workaround of removing and reinstalling
ovirt-node-ng-image-update doesn't work. I only get the following error :

Also please note that 4.3.10 was released at CentOS 7.8 time and it went
EOL before being tested on CentOS 7.9.
I would recommend moving to oVirt 4.4.6 instead if this is a new
installation.
If this is not possible, I would suggest installing on CentOS 7.8.

Hi, there was an attempt to make oVirt Node using Fedora CoreOS as base,
you can see what was done here: https://github.com/oVirt/ovirt-node-coreos
and DevConf presentation about it here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bRytJ_GRu3o
The project has been discontinued when we stopped trying to keep oVirt
compatible with Fedora: https://blogs.ovirt.org/2020/05/ovirt-and-fedora/
There is no plan to resume this work.

yes, definitely a bug. If you managed to reproduce and file a bug for it,
besides standard logs (engine and vdsm logs), please provide also ovirt-
imageio log (from engine as well as from host), which can be found in /var/

log_outputs="3:syslog:libvirtd"
and started libvirtd again. Result was the same as previous, but in messages

The "non-offline-mode" is also for updating packages, not only for
appliance installation.

This is especially important because we not always release a new
appliance on new releases, so "non-offline-mode" makes sure you update
to the latest engine prior to engine-setup - and this is especially
important on restore-from-file.

If you share vm xml for the ha vms and the regular vms it will be easier to
understand your system.

The best way is to use:

sudo virsh -r dumpxml {vm-name}

Yes.

You can run the backup in many ways, for example you can run it via ssh
from another host, finding where vms are running, and connecting to
the host to perform a backup. This is outside of ovirt, since ovirt does not
have built-in a backup feature. We have backup API and example code using it
which can be used to build a backup solution.

[ovirt-users] Re: Hosted-Engine import

2021-06-06 Thread Strahil Nikolov via Users
If you have the engine volume content's intact, you can 'tune'
ovirt-ha-broker/ovirt-ha-agent to start the HE in that specific Gluster
TSP/volume.
Yet, It's far simpler and reliable to just restore from backup.

As far as I remember a feature was introduced that allows the end-user to
verify the disk checksum after an upload.
Most probably it's not integrated in the WEB UI, but the API should have it.

I reported a similar (identical?) failure at [1]. Please check that thread.

It seems like the recommended workaround is to remove (or not install)

Hi Didi,
can't we just make ansible check via ansible  package facts the status of the
appliance and if it's available set to offline mode.I can take a look in the
Ansible code for that purpose.Otherwise , the cockpit installer can have a tick
for offline mode.

If it still fails, please open a bug and attach all relevant logs. Thanks!

That's correct.Ovirt knows and ensures that this NFS is available at all time
and will take any actions to recover the situation. When you use autofs outside
the oVirt, you still have that backup location and also it will umount when not
in use.

But you got no actual error anywhere? I'd consider this a bug. Would you
like to report one in bugzilla? Thanks!

Some points to test/include in your report:

Do you use an external certificate for https?

If so, did you follow the documented procedure to do this? Perhaps you can
tell the exact steps you took?

I'd still expect some error - so there are perhaps (at least) two separate
issues here.

Adding Vojtech.

Please try with:

- appliance installed

- '--ansible-extra-vars=he_offline_deployment=true'

- latest released code (with your custom patch removed)

If it still fails, please open a bug and attach all relevant logs. Thanks!

Hello Strahil,

Thank you for your suggestion. Yes, I downloaded ovirt-engine-appliance rpm and
installed manually, but it seems that it still tries to access to internet

I think you can download and install the ovirt-engine-appliance rpm (the big
one) from https://resources.ovirt.org/pub/ovirt-4.4/rpm/el8/x86_64/

in advance.

I have added the following line at the end of the file

https_proxy:

http_proxy:

But it gives error in the process of “hosted-engine --deploy”. I am not sure if

any offline installation method (without accessing internet repository).

I have also tried to use “hosted-engine --deploy

[ovirt-users] Re: How to handle broken NFS storage?

2021-06-05 Thread Edward Berger
I could be mistaken, but I think the issue is that ovirt engine believes
the NFS domain is mandatory for all hypervisor hosts unless you put the
storage domain into 'maintenance' mode.
It will notice its down and start trying to fence the offending hypervisors
which in turn tries to migrate VMs to other hypervisors that also are
marked bad because they can't reach the storage domain either. That's what
I recall once seeing when I thought it was safe to temporarily take down an
ISO NFS domain a few years ago.

[ovirt-users] Re: what is the best practice for the new install CentOS 8.4 or stream?

2021-06-05 Thread Strahil Nikolov via Users
If you use CentOS 8.4, you will be able to switch to stream but also you have
the possibility to switch to any other EL8 clone at the end of the
year.Drawback with non-Stream is that oVirt is tested against Stream and some
features won't be available immediately (as Stream packages are a little bit
ahead).

[ovirt-users] Re: How to handle broken NFS storage?

2021-06-05 Thread Strahil Nikolov via Users
Exactly. Ovirt will monitor storage only if it knows about it.I would use
autofs or systemd's '.mount' + '.automount' unit files to automatically mount
and umount the NFS.
In worst case scenario, you will have only several stale NFS mount points (if
using the hard option) and those most of the time can be recovered without
reboot.
Best Regards,Strahil Nikolov

If I'm understanding you correctly, it sounds like you're suggesting that I
just connect 1 (or multiple) hosts to the NFS mount manually, and don't use the
oVirt manager to build the backup domain. Then just run this script on a cron
or something - is that correct?

thank you David, installing 8.4 doesn't make things easier,
will give a try stream 8.
just saw that stream 8 is eol 2024, but didn't find the roadmap on upgrades

[ovirt-users] Re: Booting VMs from RHEL ISOs fail

2021-06-05 Thread David White via Users
I finally got this to work.
I believe that my issue was that when I thought I had uploaded the ISO, the ISO
wasn't actually being uploaded successfully.

I tried to upload various ISOs to different Storage Domains, and eventually
noticed that in a couple of cases, I would see a status bar that slowly
incremented over time indicating the percentage of the upload complete -
whereas before, there would be no status bar, and the oVirt Manager would
indicate that the ISO had just been uploaded completely.

I was able to "replicate" this status bar with the RHEL ISO, and now my VM is
booting to that ISO fine.

Problem resolved.

If you plan on using CentOS going forward, I would recommend using (starting
with) stream, as CentOS 8 will be completely EOL at the end of this year.

That said, you can easily convert a CentOS 8 server to CentOS Stream by running
these commands:

dnf swap centos-linux-repos centos-stream-repos
dnf distro-sync

More details here:

I just tested this (new) VM now on a CentOS 7 ISO.
That worked perfectly fine.

But as soon as I tried to attach the RHEL 8 Boot ISO, it did not work.
The specific error I'm seeing is:

Boot failed: Could not read from CDROM (code 0095).

I uploaded the RHEL ISOs the same way I uploaded the Ubuntu ISOs:

Once the ISOs are in place, I've attached them to VMs the same way I've

Options, click the checkbox beside "Attach CD" and change the First Device to
CD-ROM.

The oVirt Manager is 4.4.6, but the cluster compatibility is stuck at 4.4.5
right now.
This particular problem has been ongoing, though, since before I attempted to
upgrade everything to 4.4.6.

[ovirt-users] Re: How to handle broken NFS storage?

2021-06-04 Thread David White via Users
When I stopped the NFS service, I was connect to a VM over ssh.
I was also connected to one of the physical hosts over ssh, and was running top.

I observed that server load continued to increase over time on the physical
host.
Several of the VMs (perhaps all?), including the one I was connected to, went
down due to an underlying storage issue.
It appears to me that HA VMs were restarted automatically. For example, I see
the following in the oVirt Manager Event Log (domain names changed / redacted):

Jun 4, 2021, 4:25:42 AM
Highly Available VM server2.example.com failed. It will be restarted
automatically.

Jun 4, 2021, 4:25:42 AM
Highly Available VM mail.example.com failed. It will be restarted automatically.

Jun 4, 2021, 4:25:42 AM
Highly Available VM core1.mgt.example.com failed. It will be restarted
automatically.

Jun 4, 2021, 4:25:42 AM
VM cha1-shared.example.com has been paused due to unknown storage error.

Jun 4, 2021, 4:25:42 AM
VM server.example.org has been paused due to storage I/O problem.

Jun 4, 2021, 4:25:42 AM

Jun 4, 2021, 4:25:42 AM
VM server.example.org has been paused.

Jun 4, 2021, 4:25:41 AM
VM server.example.org has been paused due to unknown storage error.

Jun 4, 2021, 4:25:41 AM
VM HostedEngine has been paused due to storage I/O problem.

During this outage, I also noticed that customer websites were not working.
So I clearly took an outage.

I don't have a separate lab environment, but if I'm able to reproduce the issue
off hours, I may try to do so.
What logs would be helpful?

If I'm understanding you correctly, it sounds like you're suggesting that I
just connect 1 (or multiple) hosts to the NFS mount manually, and don't use the
oVirt manager to build the backup domain. Then just run this script on a cron
or something - is that correct?

If it is, then I think it's either a bug in the firewalld module or in
firewalld itself.

In https://github.com/gluster/gluster-ansible-infra there is an example with :
vars:
     # Firewall setup
     gluster_infra_fw_ports:

Maybe that's causing the problem ?

We need to identify the var value.
Can you add something like this before the problematic task:- name: DEBUG
debug:    var: server_cpu_list
In cockpit, before running it, there is an option to edit the playbook.

Please explain in more detail "went belly up".

In general vms not using he nfs storage domain should not be affected, but
due to unfortunate design of vdsm, all storage domain share the same global lock
and when one storage domain has trouble, it can cause delays in
operations on other
domains. This may lead to timeouts and vms reported as non-responsive,
but the actual
vms, should not be affected.

If you have a good way to reproduce the issue please file a bug with
all the logs, we try
to improve this situation.

You need to understand the actual effect on the vms before you reject NFS.

NFS is useful for this purpose. You don't need synchronous replication, and
you want the backups outside of your cluster so in case of disaster you can
restore the backups on another system.

Snapshots are always on the same storage so it will not help.

> Is there any way to setup NFS storage for a Backup Domain - as well as a Data
> domain (for lesser important VMs) - such that, if the NFS server crashed, all

NFS storage domain will always affect other storage domains, but if you mount
your NFS storage outside of ovirt, the mount will not affect the system.

Then you can backup to this mount, for example using backup_vm.py:
https://github.com/oVirt/ovirt-engine-sdk/blob/master/sdk/examples/backup_vm.py

Or one of the backup solutions, all of them are not using a storage domain for
keeping the backups so the mount should not affect the system.

Can anyone think of any reason why other ISOs would work, when RHEL ISOs do not

Hi Guillaume,

Have you moved the host to the maintenance before the upgrade (making sure
that Gluster related options are unchecked)?

Or you started the upgrade directly?

Thank you!
I decided to go with a RHEL 8 host, which worked perfectly fine. But that
brings me to a new question, for which I'll start a new thread.

one) from https://resources.ovirt.org/pub/ovirt-4.4/rpm/el8/x86_64/
in advance.

Indeed snapshot is ready only - until you start to delete it. This is
why we mark the
snapshot as illegal once delete snapshot was started.

It works like this:

1. Before snapshot

Snapshots: (none)
Volumes: A (active)

A is read-write volume, changing while the vm is running.

2. After snapshot

Snapshot: snap1 (disk snapshot A)
Volumes: A <- B (active)

A is now read only image, will never change
B is read-write, modified by the vm
B backing file is A

2. Start delete snapshot 1

Snapshot: snap1 (disk snapshot A, illegal)
Volumes: A <- B (active)

On the host running the vm, we perform block commit job,
copying data from B into A.

When the job completes, A contains all data in B, and any new
data written to the B is mirrored to A.

3. Pivoting to volume A

When the block commit has completed, we switch to vm to use volume A
instead of volume B.

At this point the VM is writing again to volume A, and volume B is unused.

Snapshot: snap1 (disk snapshot A, illegal)
Volumes: A (active) <- B

4. Cleanup

On engine side, snapshot 1 is deleted
On the host, volume B is deactivated
On the SPM host, volume B is deleted

Snapshot: (none)
Volumes: A (active)

I hope this is more clear now.

The engine ILLEGAL state means that you started a delete snapshot operation,
and the data in this snapshot has changed. This snapshot cannot be used for
restoring the vm state to the state as it was when the snapshot was created.

In this situation you can retry the delete snapshot operation again. If the
first
delete failed because of a temporary error the operation should succeed and
the snapshot will be deleted.

2021-06-03 Thread wodel youchi
Hi,

Is this an hci deployment?

If yes :

- try to boot using the old version 4.4.5
- verify that your network configuration is still intact
- verify that the gluster part is working properly
# gluster peer status
# gluster volume status

- verify the your engine and your host can resolve each other hostname

If all is ok try to bring the host at available state

Ok, ./unlock_entity.sh -t all worked. Thanks again!

Can you try to restart the engine via :

systemctl restart ovirt-engine

Thank you for the hint!

I did, and now I can create a snapshot. But the old locked snapshot disks I
still can not delete.

Sadly this not helped.

This:

# ./unlock_entity.sh -t all -q

shows also no Locked results.

[ovirt-users] Re: deployment fails - debug: var=server_cpu_dict

As per
https://github.com/oVirt/ovirt-ansible-collection/commit/b506a125efc1901e7f15fbfcfe53b2c7352316b8
it was removed from the code.
Can you remove all 'debug' tasks and try again ?

In https://github.com/gluster/gluster-ansible-infra there is an example with
:vars:     # Firewall setup     gluster_infra_fw_ports:           -
5900-6923/tcp
Maybe that's causing the problem ?
